“THE PLACE OF REASON IS DEFINED BY ONE’S FIRST APPROACH WITH THE SITE, THE FOUND OBJECT, THE FURTHER ARCHITECTURAL INTENTIONS, AND THE CREATED INTERACTIONS.” SITE PLAN

RECREATING THE ISLAND ASSURING THE CONTINUITY OF UNGERS ARCHIPELAGO CITY-BERLIN 1960’S BERLIN ARCHITECT O.M. UNGERS DEFINES THE CITY AS A “GREEN ARCHIPELAGO” IN WHICH SEVERAL ISLANDS NEEDED TO BE PRESERVED IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE ESSENCE OF THE ALREADY DESTROYED POST-WAR CITY. UNGER’S THEORY IS STILL ALIVE AND PERCEIVABLE IN SEVERAL PLACES IN BERLIN. CONCEPT

THE PLACE IS ONE OF THE SEMI-ABANDONED SITES, AN INTERIOR ISLAND WITHOUT A CERTAIN ACTIVITY, A MODERN RUIN. “THE CITY WITHIN THE CITY”, BERLIN, 1978, BY O. M. UNGERS

NO RESTORATION. NO ADDITION. NO NOSTALGIC APPROACH. THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO PRESERVE THE AREA’S “SOUL”.

GENERATION PROCESS THE SITE WORKS NOW AS A WHOLE COMPLEX IN WHICH AN ARCHIPELAGO OF PIECES ARE SURROUNDING AND PROTECTING THE INNER VOID. THE MASS PIECES ARE THE PLACE TO LIVE AND CREATE, WHILE THE VOIDS BETWEEN THEM BECOME PLACES OF EXHIBITION AND INTERCONNECTION. THROUGH THE CHOSEN DESIGN SOLUTIONS THE WHOLE PROJECT REPRESENTS AN INVITATION TO DISCOVER “THE PLACE OF REASON” H. KOLLHOFF WAS TALKING ABOUT.

ANY GRID OR STANDARDISATION IS REJECTED. INDIVIDUAL PIECES ARE PLACED ALL OVER THE SITE. THE FORM IS REJECTED AS A STARTING POINT, AS A DEFINED BOUNDARY, AND IS UNDERSTOOD AS SOMETHING THAT IS ALWAYS UNFINISHED, IN A PERMANENT EXPLORATION, IN A PROCESS OF MOVEMENT AND FRAGMENTATION.T

THE PROJECT

THE DIAGRAM DEFINES THE TOPOGRAPHY WHERE THE CUBES WILL BE PLACED. THE GENERATION PROCESS STARTS FROM ONE PHYSICAL BOUNDARY, A WALL. EVERY NODE GENERATES 2 NODES AT THE SAME DISTANCE AND UNDER A RANDOM ANGLE. IN EVERY NODE A 10X10M SQUARE IS PLACED. THE SQUARE BECOMES A CUBE, A PURE FORM IN A COMPLEX SYSTEM.

THE CUBES CONTAIN ATELIERS AND HOUSING, WHILE THE CENTRAL SPACES ARE RESERVED, BOTH THE GROUND AND THE UNDERGROUND FLOOR, FOR THE TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT EXHIBTIONS. RESIDENTS OR ARTISTS ACCESS TO THEIR PRIVATE SPACES THROUGH INDEPENDENT ENTRANCES. THE VISITOR OF THE MUSEUM CAN EITHER ENTER THROUGH THE MAIN ENTRANCE NEXT TO THE STREET OR FIND HIS OWN WAY TO THE CENTRAL VOID BY

SHOPS/ WORKSHOPS/ EXHIBITION SPACES

PASSING THROUGH THE OUTER RING. THIS WORKS AS A TRESHOLD BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE MUSEUM AND GENERATES A DIFFERENT LANDSCAPE BETWEEN THE DYNAMIC, UNDEFINED SPACES ON THE OUTSIDE AND THE RECTANGULAR, UNDERSTANDABLE SPACE ON THE INSIDE OF THE KEPT WALLS. THE PUBLIC AND THE PRIVATE COEXIST. THE DWELLINGS PRESENT A LARGE NUMBER OF SOLUTIONS, BEING ABLE TO HOST VARIOUS TYPES OF RESIDENTS.

THE OLD WALL ENCLOSES THE TWO CENTRAL SPACES THAT WILL HOST THE EXHIBITIONS. THE ACCESS TO THE UNDERGROUND FLOOR IS MADE THROUGH INDEPENDENT BLOCKS THAT WERE CUT BY THE OLD WALLS, LEAVING THE TRACES OF THE CUTTING AS A VISUAL CONNECTOR BETWEEN BOTH LEVELS.

SITE PLAN BUCHAREST/THE HOUSE OF PEOPLE

THE PROJECT WAS AN EXERCISE WHICH REQUIRED A DESIGN FOR A PUBLIC, OPEN SPACE AND WHICH HAD TO BE MADE OUT OF A LIGHT, TEMPORARY STRUCTURE.

THE PROPOSED OBJECT HAS MULTIPLE USES: CINEMA, THEATRE, IMPROVISED PUBLIC SHOWS. THE METHAPHORE OF THE EYE DEFINES THE SHAPE OF THE OBJECT BUT

ESPECIALLY ITS PURPOSE. THE CONSTRUCTION IS MADE OF WOOD AND LIGHT PANELS, THIS ONES BEING USED AS PROJECTION AREA INSIDE THE OBJECT.

DUE TO THE SITE’S LOCATION NEAR THE RESIDENTIAL AREA AND THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, THE SPORTS HALL PROJECT AIMES TO CREATE SPACES THAT WOULD NOT ONLY SERVE ITS MAIN PURPOSE BUT ALSO OTHER USES THAT WOULD ASSURE REGULAR ACTIVITIES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE BUILDING.

THE IDEA IS TO MERGE SPORT FACILITIES WITH PUBLIC FUNCTIONS IN A WAY THAT MAKES BOTH PARTS WORK TOGETHER, OR THE USE OF THE PUBLIC PART INDEPENDENT FROM THE OTHER, WHENEVER THE CASE BEING . THE PARTS ARE EXPRESSED IN TWO VOLUMES LINKED BY THE MAIN VERTICAL ACCESSES INSIDE A BUILDING THAT INTEGRATES IN THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE

THE PUBLIC AREA IS MORE OPEN TOWARDS THE PARK AND THE LAKE, COMPARING TO THE ACTUAL SPORTS HALL. THE MAIN ACCESS IS MADE THROUGH THE PUBLIC PART, WHICH CONTAINS NOT ONLY THE TICKET & INFO POINTS, BUT ALSO SHOPS, A CAFETERIA AND A RESTAURANT. THE SPORT COURT IS SURROUNDED BY LOCKER ROOMS, A FITNESS ROOM, A MEDICAL POINT, CONFERENCE ROOMS, AND A VIP LOUNGE AREA.

THE SITE IS A FORMER SHOE FACTORY LOCATED IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE CENTRAL AREA OF BUCHAREST. THERE ARE CLEAR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH OF THE CITY CENTER, ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SHORT WALKING DISTANCES INSIDE THE PERIMETER OF THIS AREA. MOST ACTIVITIES WHICH INVOLVE CULTURE, COMMERCE AND SERVICES TAKE PLACE IN THE NORTHERN PART, ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RIVER DAMBOVITA, WHILE THE SOUTH IS MAINLY RESIDENTIAL. THIS STRIKING CONTRAST WAS CAUSED BY THE MASSIVE AND CHAOTIC DESTRUCTION OF THE TRADITIONAL URBAN TISSUE DURING THE COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP BACK IN THE ‘80S, WHICH HAD TO MAKE PLACE TO THE NEWER CONSTRUCTIONS. THE TRACES OF THIS DESTRUCTION ARE MORE VISIBLE IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE CITY CENTER, WHERE SOCIALIST BLOCKS CREATE THE CONTEMPORARY URBAN LANDSCAPE. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO HELP GENERATE SEVERAL CULTURAL, COMMERCIAL HUBS, STARTING FROM THE FORMER SHOE FACTORY. THESE NEW POINTS OF INTEREST ARE MEANT TO IMPROVE THE CHARACTER OF THIS PART OF DOWNTOWN BUCHAREST AND TO CREATE COHESION BETWEEN THE SMALLER AND GREATER PARTS.

THE GOAL IS ALSO TO DECONGEST THE NORTHERN AREA OF THE CITY CENTER, WHICH TENDS TO GET OVERCROWDED WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME.

THE SITE IS LOCATED AT THE LIMIT BETWEEN TWO TYPES OF URBAN TISSUE: THE TRADITIONAL, CHAOTIC ONE-STOREY HOUSES AND THE NEWER, STRICTLY DISPOSED ROWS OF BLOCKS.

THE PASSAGE FROM ONE TYPE OF SPACE, THE INFORMAL ONE, TO THE ACTUAL THEATER IS DONE GRADUALLY AND BY DIFFERENT USE OF MATERIAL ON THE FACADES.

THE IDEA OF THE PROJECT IS TO KEEP THE ONE HISTORICAL BUILDING OF THE OLD FACTORY AND TO DESIGN AROUND IT IN A WAY THAT COMPLETES THE TRANSITION FROM ONE URBAN FORM TO THE OTHER. THE KEPT BUILDING REPRESENTS A LANDMARK FOR THE AREA AND WILL BE SURROUNDED BY SEVERAL NEW DESIGNS, ALL TOGETHER SERVING THE SAME PURPOSE. THESE BUILDINGS WILL HOST CULTURAL, COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES. THE DETAILED BUILDING IS A THEATER WHOSE SPECIAL FEATURE IS THE COVERED BUT OPEN PUBLIC SPACE. THIS PLACE CAN BE USED FOR IMPROVISED, SPONTANEOUS SHOWS, OR FOR OTHER CULTURAL MANIFESTATIONS THAT DON’T REQUIRE A FORMAL SPACE.

THE IDEA OF THE PROJECT WAS INSPIRED BY THE KLEANTHIS & SCHAUBERT MASTERPLAN FOR ATHENS, THE NEW CAPITAL OF GREECE IN 1834. THE ARCHITECTS PROPOSED A TRIANGULAR SYSTEM OF SQUARES WITH DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS, FROM WHICH ONLY ONE DIDN’T GET TO BE BUILT- THE SQUARE IN THE KERAMEIKOS AREA, THOUGHT TO BE THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE CITY. THE PROJECT WAS PARTICULAR BECAUSE OF ITS AIM TO IMPLEMENT AN OCCIDENTAL MODEL ON A FULLY ORIENTAL STRUCTURE.

KERAMEIKOS NEIGHBOURHOOD

KERAMEIKOS REPRESENTS A KEY-POINT FOR ATHENS SINCE IT IS SITUATED AT THE CROSSROAD OF THE TWO MAJOR CIRCULATION AXES, ONE OF THEM LINKING CENTRAL ATHENS WITH THE PIRAEUS PORT. BECAUSE OF BEING CLOSE TO THE ACROPOLIS AND TO THE ANCIENT CEMETERY, THE AREA HAS A MIXED AND COMPLEX BUILT ENVIRONMENT. WHILE THIS CAN INCREASE THE VALUE OF THE AREA, THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS THAT DEFINE THE SPACE: THE FRAGMENTED ASPECT OF THE BUILT, THE SOCIAL SEGREGATION, THE LACK OF CERTAIN ACTIVITIES WHICH COULD ATTRACT THE POPULATION. THERE ARE SOME ONGOING PROGRAMS THAT WANT TO CHANGE THE CHARACTER OF KERAMEIKOS: REMAP KERAMEIKOS, A PROJECT THAT AIMS TO CREATE A CULTURAL CENTER IN THE AREA, AND PROJECT BACKGROUND WHICH TRIES TO UNIFY THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF ATHENS, AMONG THEM ALSO THE KERAMEIKOS CEMETERY.

THERE IS AN ALREADY EMERGING CUTURAL CENTER IN THE OLD GAS PLANT LOCATED IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE SITE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE EXISTING PEDESTRIAN STREET THAT LINKS THIS PART WITH THE FAMOUS ERMOU STREET AND THE MONASTIRAKI BAZAAR, PASSES THROUGH A FRAGMENTED, CHARACTERLESS AREA: THE ANCIENT CEMETERY HAS BEEN DIVIDED BY THE TRAIN TACKS OF THE METRO LINE, THUS CREATING THIS AMBIGUOUS SPACE. THE CUT ALSO LIMITS THE ACCESS BETWEEN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE AREA.


IDEA OF RESTRUCTURING THE SITE- FORM GENERATING ELEMENTS

IDEA OF RESTRUCTURING THE SITE- CONTEXT GENERATING PROGRAM

THE MAIN IDEA FOR THE PROJECT IS TO CREATE COHESION USING THE EXISTING ADVANTAGES OF THE SITE. THE AIM IS TO ARTICULATE THE POLES OF INTEREST, LIKE THE OLD GAS PLANT, THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KERAMEIKOS AND THE MONASTIRAKI BAZAAR IN A WAY WHERE NEW ACTIVITIES AND HUMAN INTERACTIONS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PLACE. THE ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSAL IS ABOUT RECONSTRUCTING THE DAMAGED TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SITE, WHITCH WAS AFFECTED BY THE BUILT TRAIN TRACKS. GREEN TERRACES WILL RECONFIGURE THE SLOPE AND COVER PARTIALLY THE TRAIN TRACKS, THUS ESTABLISHING NEW HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE SIDES OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AND THE HOUSING AREAS. THE TERRACES WILL ALSO KEEP THE PEDESTRIAN STREET IN SOME PARTS IN SHADE AND WILL CREATE NEW AREAS OF RECREATION, COMMERCE AND CULTURE. THERE WILL BE TWO MAJOR INTERVENTIONS, AT BOTH EASTERN AND WESTERN LIMIT OF THE SITE. IN THE EASTERN PART THERE WILL BE A PHYSICAL LINK BETWEEN KERAMEIKOS AND THE ANCIENT AGORA, WITH A MUSEUM, EXHIBITION SPACES AND SMALL COMERCIAL SPACES, AS WELL AS THE NEW ENTRANCE TO THE THESEIO METRO STATION. TOWARDS THE OLD GAS PLANT THERE WILL BE A MULTIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING THAT WILL CONTAIN AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE, A HOTEL AND THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO KERAMEIKOS. THIS PART IS ALSO THE ONE WHICH WILL BE DETAILED FURTHER ON.

THE PROJECT

THE CHOICE OF DESIGNING AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS MOTIVATED BY THE WILL TO REVIVE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES, THE ANCIENT AGORA TOGETHER WITH THE KERAMEIKOS AREA. THROUGH ITS ACTIVITIES ON SITE, THE INSTITUTE COULD HELP ATTRACT TOURISTS AND INCREASE THE AWEARNESS OF THESE DECAYED PLACES. THE PRESENCE OF THE INSTITUTE NEXT TO THE OLD GAS PLANT COMPLETES THE DEVELOPING CULTURAL LANDSCAPE AND GENERATES NEW ACTIVITIES THAT ARE TYPICAL FOR AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY.

VERTICAL VOID

COMPACT OBJECT HORIZONTAL LINK THE PROJECT IS THE ANSWER TO AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WHICH REQUIRED A PROPOSAL OF AN ENERGYEFFICIENT SCHOOL BASED ON THE PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD. THE SCHOOL IS INTENDED FOR CHILDREN FROM 6 TO 15 YEARS OLD AND HAS A CAPACITY BETWEEN 200 AND 230 STUDENTS. THE DESIGN HAS TO COMBINE CLASSICAL ELEMENTS OF A LEARNING FACILITY WITH MODERN ONES AND SHOULD RESPECT THE

PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY. THE DESIGN STARTS FROM A BASIC AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT FORM THAT SHAPES ITSELF WHILE KEEPING AND IMPROVING THIS QUALITIES: FIRST THERE IS THE ATRIUM FOR LIGHT, HEATING AND VENTILATION, ALSO THE MAIN LINK BETWEEN THE FLOORS. THE OPENINGS ON THE FACADES HAVE DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS AND APPEARENCE ACCORDING TO THE ORIENTATION OF THE BUILDING.

SITE LOCATION: BRASOV/ROMANIA REGARDING THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN OF THE PARK, THE AIM IS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SITE AND ITS PARTICULAR CHARACTER, FINDING SOLUTIONS SUITABLE FOR SUCH A PLACE.

THE PROJECT IS A CONTEST LAUNCHED BY THE MUNICIPALITY OF BRASOV AND REQUIRES DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR A SLOPED PARK LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE MEDIEVAL CITY, BETWEEN THE OLD CITADEL AND THE HISTORIC CENTER. THE PARK IS CURRENTLY USED ONLY BY LOCAL PEOPLE. ALTHOUGH THERE IS A PHYSICAL LINK TO THE TOURISTICAL ROUTE, THIS ONE IS NOT REALLY USED. THE PROPOSAL IS A TWO-STAGE INTERVENTION, ON AN URBAN SCALE AND A LOCAL SCALE. THE SLOPED PARK WILL BE INCLUDED IN A TOURISTICAL ROUTE THAT WILL LINK THE CITADEL WITH THE HISTORIC CENTER. THEREFORE, A CABLE CAR WILL MAKE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PARK AND THE CITADEL,THE LATTER BEING CURRENTLY HARDLY ACCESSIBLE.

THE MAIN THEME OF THE PARK IS FORMED AROUND ITS TRADITIONAL USE AS A PLACE FOR SUNBATHING DURING SUMMER AND AS A SLEIGHING SLOPE DURING WINTER. THE PARK WILL BE DIVIDED IN DIFFERENT AREAS. THE LARGEST SURFACE WILL BE USED AS IT WAS BEFORE, FOR SUNBATHING AND SLEIGHING. THERE WILL BE A BIKE PATH STARTING FROM THE HISTORIC CENTER, CROSSING THE PARK AND CONTINUING TO THE MOUNTAIN RESORT, POIANA BRASOV. WHILE PASSING THROUGH THE PARK, THERE WILL BE AN ENLARGEMENT IN THE PATH, AN AREA FOR RESTING, SKATING, WHICH CAN BE ALSO USED AS AN ICE SKATING RING DURING WINTER.

EVOLUTION OF ROME UNTIL THE 20 TH A.D.

THE PROJECT OF THE VIA APPIA ANTICA IN ROME IS PART OF A MASTER PROGRAMM WHICH DEALS WITH ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHEOLOGY. THE THEME REQUIRES REVIVING THE VIA APPIA ANTICA AND IT’S MONUMENTS AND INCLUDING THEM INTO THE TOURISTICAL ROUTE OF ROME.

CONTEMPORARY ROME

THE CONTEMPORARY CITY HAS GROWN REGARDLESS OF ITS PAST, ITS ANCIENT STRUCTURES HAVE STOPED BEING AN ACTIVE PART OF ROME. THE VIA APPIA ANTICA KEEPS VERY LITTLE OF ITS FORMER IMPORTANCE TO THE CITY AND TO THE ENTIRE ROMAN EMPIRE. IT IS BARLEY VISIBLE FROM THE HISTORICAL PART OF THE CITY AND ITS MANY MONUMENTS ARE LEFT IN RUIN. THERE ARE FEW WAY OF REACHING THE VIA APPIA ALTHOUGH IT IS PART OF THE BIGGEST GREEN AREAS OF THE CITY.

1. CIRCO MASSIMO

THE INTERVENTION AIMS TO CREATE A STARTING/ ENDING POINT FOR THE VIA APPIA ANTICA, AS WELL AS A GENERAL STARTING POINT FOR THE ANCIENT MUSEUMS OF ROME. THE BUILDING WILL HOST: AN INFO CENTER, BIKE RENTALS, EXHIBITION AREAS, SHOPS, CAFES, THE MUSEUM OF CIRCO MASSIMO, ARCHEO BUS STATION.

THE NEW BUILDING CONNECTS THE AREA OF THE CIRCO MASSIMO, THAT WORKS AS A PARK, WITH THE UPPER PART OF THE CITY, THROUGH STAIRS, ELEVATORS AND A PEDESTRIAN/ BIKE RAMP. THE RUINS OF THE CIRCO MASSIMO WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE NEW MUSEUM.

THE PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE AREA BETWEEN THE ARCH OF DRUSUS AND THE PORTA S. SEBASTIANO. THIS WILL BECOME A PUBLIC SPACE, A RESTING POINT FOR TOURISTS, MARKING ALSO THE ENTRANCE TO THE MUSEUM OF THE WALLS.

THE SPACE WILL BE PROVIDED WITH URBAN FURNITURE SUCH AS BENCHES, INFO PANELS, BIKE RACKS.

THE INTERVENTION REGARDS THE FORMER TOMB, WHICH LATER BECAME A DEFENSIVE TOWER FOR THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS CREATED AROUND IT. THERE WILL BE AN IMMATERIAL MUSEUM BUILD INSIDE THE CELLA OF THE TOMB. THE DESTROYED STAIRS WHICH ASSURED THE ACCESS TO THE TERRACE OF THE TOWER WILL BE RESTORED AND THE TERRACE WILL BE REDESIGNED AS A PANORAMIC ONE , VALUING THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE.

THE NEW BUILDING IS PLACED IN AN ANCIENT ROMAN QUARRY, RIGHT NEXT TO THE CIAMPINO AIRPORT. IT IS A STARTING/ ENDING POINT FOR THE VIA APPIA ANTICA AND IT CAN HOST: AN INFO CENTER, BIKE RENTALS, EXHIBITION AREAS, CONFERENCE ROOMS, ACCOMMODATION.

THERE IS A NEED OF HAVING A THIRD BUILDING, A PAVILLION, THAT WILL STAND FOR THE RESIDENTIAL AREA. THE NEW BUILDING WILL HOST EXHIBITIONS, EVENTS.

THE BUILDING FOLLOWS THE SHAPE OF THE QUARRY AND IS PERFECTLY INTEGRATED IN THE LANDSCAPE. THERE ARE INFO POINTS DESIGNED FOR EACH OF THE THREE MONUMENTS.

THE ANCIENT VILLA, WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN A RURAL LANDSCAPE, WAS LINKED TO AN AQUEDUCT, IN ORDER TO SUPPLY THE THERMAE, THE GARDENS AND THE RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF THE BUILDING WITH WATER. THE IDEA IS TO BRING THE WATER BACK IN THE VILLA, THUS CREATING A PATH THROUGH THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE.

THE SERVICES MODULES ARE PLACED AT THE KEY-CROSSROADS ON THE VIA APPIA ANTICA. THEY CONTAIN INFO POINTS, CAFES, BIKE RENTALS AND PUBLIC TOILETS. RIGHT NEXT TO THEM THERE ARE PARKING PLACES TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO LEAVE THE CARS AND GO BY FOOT OR BIKE TO VISIT THE VIA APPIA ANTICA.

THE TWO FREESTANDING RUINS OF THE THERMAE WILL BE COVERED AND THEIR SPACES REUSED.
