Roast of Jeff Schapiro May 29, 2012

From the VPAP Board Chairman Those of us who are involved in politics or government affairs have a love-hate relationship with the press. We love it when reporters dig out useful information. We hate it when they frame issues in ways that don’t suit us ut if it came down to a choice of press or B no press, we’d all take the former. V PAP has a close association with the newspaper industry. David Poole was a journalist when he came up with the idea of VPAP back in 1996. The state’s five largest dailies provided the original seed money. The Virginia Press Association is a sustaining donor. And the state’s newspapers generate the articles we read each morning in the VPAP Whipple Report. We are thankful for these relationships, which help us all inform the professionals and interested citizens who care about politics.

Capitol longer than all but only four sitting state lawmakers. In an era of fewer reporters, Jeff’s institutional knowledge is a rare thing.

So it’s fitting that today we recognize Jeff Schapiro, the dean of the Capitol press corps. Love him or not -- you have to read him. Jeff has been a fixture at the State

Sincerely,

Thank you for supporting this event and VPAP’s mission of greater transparency in government and politics. Your investment pays dividends for all who value Virginia’s legacy of open government.

Jeff at a glance

Born: New York City

The 41st Senator

Education: Georgetown University (B.A. History, 1977) Career: After stopovers at dailies in Lake Charles, Louisiana and Paterson, New Jersey, Jeff landed in Richmond in October 1979 as a statehouse reporter for United Press International. He signed on with the Richmond Times-Dispatch in April 1987. Jeff became a fixture on the Senate floor, transcribing debate on yellow legal pads and observing the idiosyncrasies of each member. His calling card was a bow tie and round spectacles that looked as if they came from a boutique on the Upper East Side. His tenure outlasted that of many a Senator, and Jeff became known as they “41st Senator.” Jeff’s role evolved into a reporter/columnist. He had the chutzpah to walk into a press conference to ask questions of an official whom he had disparaged in print that very morning. Jeff became a full-time columnist in September 2010, provoking thought and getting under politicians’ skin twice a week.

Family: Wife Clare (food writer at the Richmond Times-Dispatch) and son Felix (sophomore at the College of William and Mary)

VPAP Goes Federal Just in time for the 2012 elections, the Virginia Public Access Project is now tracking money in congressional elections. VPAP has a complete list of Virginia donors to candidates for the President, U.S. Senate and the state’s 11 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The new pages are made possible through a partnership with the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washingtonbased nonprofit that follows federal money at OpenSecrets.org.
