Looking Back in Time: The Mace's Legacy Alex Scruggs News Editor The Mace & Crown first laid its paw on campus in 1962, and has been Old Dominion University’s main news source ever since. Although much has
changed at ODU, this paper has faithfully remained to document the goings on at ODU and the surrounding area. With the Mace evolving into a quarterly student magazine instead of a weekly student newspaper starting next semester, it is only fitting to go
over several prominent news stories that we have broken over the years. The following is a collection of interesting and noteworthy stories and features pulled from our issues starting in the late 90’s. Some represent fundamental changes that ODU has
undergone, some are fun Monarch facts that are still relevant today. Regardless of the instance, the Mace has always been there to document and report, as it will continue to do. see THE LEGACY, page A4

A Timeline of Art & Culture in Norfolk
Lindsey Lanham Arts & Entertianment Editor
The NorVa Theatre (Originally opened in 1922)
There’s no denying that the art and culture scene in Norfolk is a prominent one. Featuring music venues, art galleries and theatres, the city has definitely grown into its own in terms of art. Here is a timeline of how the art scene really began to take place.
Located on 317 Monticello Ave., The NorVa has not always been used as a concert venue. It originally started out as a movie theater. It stayed that way until the 1970’s where it became home to the Downtown Athletic Club until 1998. The theatre reopened in 2000 as a music venue.
At a capacity of 1,450, the small venue has hosted some of the largest acts that music has to offer. Prince played to a sold out crowd at The NorVa in 2001. The theatre was fan voted as the best music venue in Rolling Stone in 2013. The venue is notorious for not only bringing big name artists but also having a hot tub in the green room.
Chrysler Museum of Art (Originally opened in 1933) The Chrysler Museum of Art, located at One Memorial Place Norfolk, started out as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. The original idea started between two women. Irene Leache and Anna Wood ran an allgirls school until Leache decided to return to Europe and retire. see ARTS, page B1
A History of Home and Handheld Consoles Audra Reigle Technology Editor Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have been big names in the video game industry. All three have released consoles for gamers to play the latest games on over the years. Nintendo and Sony have even launched portable systems. We’re going to take a look at the history of these three companies and see where the future will take them. According to Nintendo, their first home console was the Nintendo Entertainment System, which launched in 1985. It was succeeded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. The Nintendo 64, released in 1996, introduced 3D gaming to the Nintendo line of home systems. The next home console wasn’t launched until 2001 with the release of the GameCube, which made the switch from cartridges to optical discs for games. The Wii was released in 2006, and it brought wireless motion-sensitive controls and Wi-Fi with it. The Wii U launched in November 2012, according to IGN. Nintendo Switch is the latest home system from Nintendo, and it launched in March 2017. Nintendo’s first handheld console was the Game Boy, which launched in 1989. The Game Boy Pocket also launched in 1996, and it “...came in a variety of colors.” The Game Boy Advance launched in 2001. The Game Boy Advance SP launched in 2003 and was able to be folded. It also eliminated the need to replace batteries with a rechargeable battery. The Nintendo DS succeeded the Game Boy Advance SP and it introduced dual screens, one of which was a touch screen, and Wi-Fi capabilities. The Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL were also part of the Nintendo DS line of handhelds.The Nintendo 3DS was launched in March 2011 and allowed players to view 3D without the need of 3D glasses. see GAME, page D1 -

With the coming school year will bring an incredible amount of change, and we are already proud of what we’ve accomplished. This will be our last issue as a newspaper. After this issue, in mid-September, we will come out with our first ever magazine. My name is Julianna Wagner, and I am the newest Editor-in-Chief of this publication. I’m a junior at Old Dominion University and I’m absolutely thrilled to be editing for The Mace. I wanted this issue to be all about the history of Mace & Crown. When you’re strolling campus, I really want you to think about how this place has changed. I want you to think about how your time here has influenced the 60-year legacy that this publication has held, even if you were only here for four or five of those years. Do you feel different? When you look through this publication, consider the news we’ve experienced here as students, and what news was here before us. As the Mace & Crown is a reflection of your time here as students and members of the community, we publish this for you. This newspaper has been a reflection of our passions, and we truly hope you enjoy it and continue to pick it up in the future once it’s a little different. Whether the writers and staff here do this as a stepping stone to our career or not, all of us do it because we love it. Hopefully, you see that when you’re thumbing through it. Thank you so much for sticking around with us throughout the years whether our pages were in black and white or in color. Sincerely, Julianna Wagner

“Alcohol Comes to Webb Center With House of Blue” With an opening date of Oct. 3, 2005, the South Mall of Webb Center turned into a night club which served beer and wine through Aramark. After the sun went down, food vendors, like Subway and Pizza Hut, closed and “House of Blue” opened for business. For the entire time during which House of Blue was open (roughly one year), Aramark made $4,000 on food sales, and only $135 on alcohol sales. "People just wanted a place to dance," said one student. Vol. 48, Issue 1 – Sept. 6, 2006 “Flooding: Little Damage but Major Hassle” “Flooding closes campus, students play in ‘Kauffmann Lake’ outside of Webb.” This article is The Mace and Crown’s first indication of flooding being a major issue at ODU. Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer As the 2017-2018 hurricane season approaches, it is prudent for residents and Monarchs to make themselves aware of the City of Norfolk’s pattern of recurring flooding, if they wish to stay dry. Particularly because, as a 2012 Washington Post article says, “The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that Hampton Roads, anchored by Norfolk, is at the greatest risk from sea-level rise for a Metro Area its size, save for New Orleans.” In addition, the United States Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that it expects an “above normal” Atlantic hurricane season. With these facts in mind, all Monarchs should make themselves aware of Norfolk’s flood zone, hurricane evacuation routes, and the necessary steps to be taken in the likely event of a Hurricane or mass flooding incident. As climates continue to warm, the danger of flooding and sea-level rise increases significantly. The Post article noted, “Sea-level rise isn’t expected to significantly affect most American cities for at least 30 years. But Hampton Roads — including Virginia Beach and Portsmouth on Norfolk’s borders — is already kneedeep in floodwaters because, as one
activist said, the area is ‘as flat as a pancake’ and Chesapeake Bay river tributaries slice deeply inland.” In regards to always staying prepared, is up to the individual to make themselves aware of the situation and act accordingly for their friends, neighbors, and community. For instance, there are three distinctive types of flooding that at first glance might not seem important to distinguish, but for insurance and safety purposes, are worth noting. According to the City of Norfolk’s website on flooding strategy, the first classification of flooding is precipitation flooding which “occurs when rain intensity exceeds capacity of our storm drain systems due to blockages or naturally depressed elevations.” The next, defined as storm flooding, “is caused by storm surges resulting from events such as hurricanes and nor'easters and is directly related to land elevation and proximity to coastline. High tides magnify this storm damage.” The last classification of flooding is known as tidal flooding, “caused by tidal variations and is directly related to land elevation and proximity to coastline. Tidal flooding may occur on a regular basis due to normal moon cycles and is exacerbated by wind speeds and directions, sea level rise, and other types of flooding.” The risks for hurricane damage due to flooding and the need to be aware for the upcoming hurricane season
was also stressed by local 13-NewsNow meteorologist, Tim Pandajis, “It is very important for students to be aware of the weather as it unfolds. To track storms as they develop by staying tuned to 13-News-Now.” Mr. Pandaijis continued to highlight the idea that “the most significant threat facing our area is tidal flooding. An example of this would be Hurricane Mathew, affects lasted for days and caused significant damage to the Hampton Roads Region.” In addition, The Washington Post also reported that, “the ground is sinking in Tidewater, as Hampton Roads is also known. It sits in the nation’s largest known geologic impact crater, an Ice Age formation that’s causing land to drop about seven inches every century, accounting for about one-third of the sea-levelchange.” The Old Dominion University Resilience Collaborative (ODU-RC) is a campus organization dedicated to studying Norfolk’s flooding. ODURC “consists of a consortium of leading scholars actively engaged in research, education, and outreach on critical issues for resilience at the community, regional, and global levels.” This team of devoted individuals’ main focus for the 2017-2018 year consists of four elements, according to their newsletter: “Critical infrastructure resilience, flooding resilience, urban visioning, coastal
science and engineering.” Professor Michelle Covi of the ODU-RC stressed the importance for “students to become aware of the flooding patterns in the entire Hampton Roads region; particularly those associated with smaller storms and hurricanes.” Professor Covi then went on to discuss ways in which Monarchs can help to alleviate the problems of flooding, “The WAZE App, is an outstanding public resource available for mass communication between residents of Hampton Roads to stay informed of flood patterns, and occurrences of flooding throughout the region.” Professor Covi also said, “It is very important for all Monarchs to remember to never drive through tidal flooding waters, as the brackish water contains high levels of saline, and this has the potential to damage the electronic systems of the vehicle.” Daniel P. Richards, Ph.D., assistant professor of English specializing in technical communication, specifically the communication of risks to the public, underlines the need for community cooperation. “While flooding affects some areas of Norfolk more than others, the fact remains that it is only a problem that can be addressed if the community comes together,” he said. “Despite the unfortunately partisan national level conversations about the causes of sea level rise, on a local level we need to do our best to fight against the waters currently
The Mace & Crown

impacting us.” Richards went on to elaborate, “Vulnerable localities like Norfolk can improve its public health and sustainability moving forward by continuing to support initiatives and elect leaders that acknowledge the issue at hand and are willing to take steps to address an issue that, for many of us, we're literally up to our knees in. On a practical level, this means gathering the appropriate emergency supplies and sharing with those most affected, keeping an eye out for those most negatively affected.” Richards also noted that, “On a broader level, this means paying close attention to the measures the city has taken and plans to take to ensure our city remains a vibrant, growing coastal community that remains a safe and healthy place to live." In present-day Norfolk, the need for community awareness and education on the individual is high in the rapidly changing environmental and geopolitical environment. However, as a team of devoted and practical individuals both campus and throughout the nation continue to work tirelessly, a much-needed mindset of clarity and practical solutions to these problems will continue to be developed.

Local Cat Cafe Opens in Ghent David Hollis Contributing Writer After much anticipation, the Catnip Cat Cafe opened this past weekend. A concept originally conceived in Taipei, Taiwan, it’s a place where cat enthusiasts can interact with cats while enjoying hot coffee or tea. The unique café is one of only a few that allows cats to roam freely, and, if one of them catches a customer’s eye, that customer can adopt that cat. This local, cat café is located a little more than five minutes from Old Dominion University by car. The establishment was quaint and clean, and even smelled great. It was the perfect place to enjoy the company of the feline hosts. There was a variety of art that hung on the walls, naturally of cats. Overall, the atmosphere was comfortable, the cats were friendly and the atmosphere was warm, nice and relaxing. I’ve always had cats, I’ve always loved cats," small business owner,
B2
Freeda Steele said, in a recent interview, when asked why she started a cat café. When asked about why this is trending, Steele said, “Kind of a winwin for everybody, you know? It helps the cats and helps the shelter and rescue groups you work with.” When asked how the opening weekend went, Steele said, “It went really well, I mean everybody had a good time. Everybody had nice things to say.” One of the reasons this type of café is becoming a sought after business could be due to the rising popularity of cats. Due to the internet, many people are becoming exposed to adorable videos of cats or cats becoming memes. As a result, over the past four years, the popularity of cats has risen. Unfortunately, there are many cases where one cannot own a cat or one has trouble finding one to adopt. These cafés allow for resolution of these issues to be solved in one fell swoop. In fact, this business is known for
helping cats be adopted. Over the course of six months, over one hundred cats can usually get adopted out of a cat café, if one is local. These cafés allow for a much more uplifting way to adopt a cat than going to a shelter. Steele’s Catnip Cat Café offers a nice environment to have cats and people come together. You can see their personalities and play with them. In the future, the Catnip Cat Cafe has plans to start hosting events taking place at the café to allow for more opportunities for everyone to spend time and socialize with the cats in residence in the café. Steele say they hope, “...people come in and maybe do the things that they’re already kind of doing, but do it around cats.” These events could include an arts and crafts night, yoga classes or create your own cat toy. This new addition to the Ghent area is a wonderful place for homeless cats and will surely bring character to the area, allowing for a cat-friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

were beginning to line up their cars in the amphitheater parking lot. Vendors were selling t-shirts, posters, key chains and hats. It seemed like the perfect setting for any ordinary concert, when in fact it was far from ordinary. It was the first time Boyz II Men shared the stage with legendary soul singer Luther Vandross. Slowly, the seats filled and people
stretched out their blankets. It was a packed house. The concert itself was memorable, proving yet again that nobody does love songs better than Luther Vandross. Still, it would have been great if the two groups had joined each other on stage at the end.”
Music's Lost Voices Adam Flores Senior Writer 2016 saw the tragic and untimely deaths of many prominent musicians, namely David Bowie and Prince. As iconic frontmen, they artistically and visually pushed the limits of their voice and music within the popular music spectrum. With the recent passing of grunge and alternative rock’s Chris Cornell and Southern rock pioneer Gregg Allman, again we experience a momentary lapse deafening silence. Each instance leaves no doubt the music world was shaken at its core. The death of a prominent music artist triggers uncertainty for the future voice of their respective genre as well as for those who have borrowed their bigger-than-life themes and influence into new categories of expression. Does it actually signify the end of an era? No. And, though some may claim the music has died, there is an afterlife. The carbon footprint left by a noted musician will always live and reside within those communities that take in and continue to nurture its distinct voice and power. It will continue to in-

fluence generations by working its way further into sociological mainstreams and perhaps mature into something better than it ever though it could be. Its implications could be a head of its time waiting for the right moment to break down walls in helping shape a sociocultural and sociopolitical mindset in its own time. In music, two fundamental elements must theoretically exist and work in collaboration with one another: sound and silence (don’t count John Cage’s “4’33””). Both are necessary. Both are reliant on each other for their own existence. There may be a silence right now. That’s okay. We wait for a new voice to sound and continue the melodic shape of a voice with its harmonic tendencies. Music appropriates time, using it to its advantage within life’s chronological framework. This multilayered, chronobiological notion of rhythmic and cyclical phenomena ideology helps theorize time as a continuous foundation in the evolvement of a musician’s use of artistic time during their own lifetime. Though Cornell and Allman–along with many other of music’s noted trendsetters–have left this earth, their work and influence will continue to inspire those that will now carry their torch into the future.

Following the eye-opening realization of her 2013 “Pure Heroine” debut, Lorde’s sophomore set includes the previously released, emotion-driven resilience of “Green Light” and melancholic “Liability.” Promising to be a coming-of-age narrative, the now twentysomething artist born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor looks to prove her place among a growing, pop-induced feminist mainstream.
Adding to the growing influx of artist ‘Deluxe’ and ‘Special Edition’ sets, Radiohead’s “OKNOTOK” revisits their seminal 1997 release of “OK Computer,” completely remastered adding eight B-sides and three previously unreleased tracks. Their last studio effort, 2016’s “A Moon Shaped Pool” moves away from cynisistic plot line into simpler truths surrounded by wonder and amazement.
The highly-anticipated followup to 2014’s “Z,” “CTRL” includes previously released tracks “Love Galore,” “Drew Barrymore,” “twoAM,” a rework of “PARTYNEXTDOOR” and Drake’s “Come and See Me.” The new album by Supreme Alphabet inspired SZA–born Solána Imani Rowe–delivers an inspirational set of tracks denouncing life’s unnecessary drama and rising to the top of your game.
Harris looks to prove you can’t go wrong working with an all-star lineup featuring Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Future, Pharrell, Katy Perry, Big Sean, John Legend, Khalid, Migos, Schoolboy Q , Ariana Grande, Young Thug, D.R.A.M., Kehlani, and more. As the follow-up to his 2014 “Motion” album, Harris continues his quest in working with the greatest artists of our generation.

Sports NBA Dream Draft
Follow @macecrownsports on Twitter
Roberto Castro Contributing Writer NBA Draft Top Player’s Rankings 2017 With the NCAA basketball season and the NBA regular season ending, much fan anticipation has begun to arise over, arguably, one of the most exciting events to occur in NBA postseason. The official 2017 NBA Draft is on June 22. The NBA Draft provides hope to many teams looking for the next cornerstone player to vitalize failing or subpar franchises. The biggest challenge coaches and franchisees face during draft season is figuring out which prospect is the right fit for their organization. While I might not have all the answers, due to the limited public knowledge of the players, I’m able to provide the most important details on the most promising players. Thus, this list will be comprised of strictly the eye test as to who the top players are, and which team would suit best to draft them. In most cases, the eye test is the primary method teams use to prevent over analysis of players, which could become potentially threatening to the franchise. This means, as a quick preview, maybe if you’re Sacramento you can finally get this right, while if you’re New York you can find a way not to get this wrong. Top 10 Players in 2017 NBA Draft: *played overseas Markelle Fultz (Washington): Fultz is without a doubt the best overall player in this draft. He possesses all the necessary traits to become a superstar in the NBA. He is both a great finisher and jump shooter, and he is great at creating for teammates with his passing ability. He can also defend on and off the ball. While his numbers were inflated due to being on a low preforming team, any concerns about him being the best prospect should be put to rest. Best Fit: The Phoenix Suns have Eric Bledsoe and Devin Booker, but it would be logical for the Suns to trade in Bledsoe for a younger, ver-
satile player to fill Bledsoe’s previous role. Inserting Fultz as the primary ball handler/playmaker will not only take the scoring load off Booker, but form potentially the scariest backcourt in the NBA. Dennis Smith Jr. (N.C. State): Smith Jr. is seemingly the most NBA “ready” player in this draft. Like Fultz, he possesses an all-around game both offensively and defensively with his scoring and passing, as well as defensive abilities. However, there are concerns about his leadership and consistency on both sides of the court, along with decision making. Despite, the overwhelming talent should usurp the criticism. Best Fit: The New York Knicks need a dynamic playmaker at the point guard position that can not only make plays for himself but for his teammates, unlike Derrick Rose. The team could use a dynamic primary playmaker to fit with Kristaps Porzingis, and Smith Jr. could be the answer. Lonzo Ball (UCLA): Ball is not the best overall player in this draft, but should be labeled the best “point guard” because of his passing and unselfish nature on the court. He also has rare leadership skills and a stoic personality that would fit a team in need of a floor general. Ball may not be an explosive athlete, and will need to improve his strength and midrange pull-up game, but he has the necessary all-around game and point guard skills to be a cornerstone to a rebuilding franchise. Best Fit: The Los Angeles Lakers seem like the perfect fit for Ball not just because he is from the area, but the Lakers are in desperate need for a true point guard and floor general that seems to fit Ball’s playing style. They were once called the “show time” Lakers, and Ball could help resurrect a similar reputation. Josh Jackson (Kansas): Jackson is the most skilled forward in this draft, ahead of Jayson Tatum, due to his complete game and energy on both sides of the court. He can score in a variety of ways inside and out while also being a capable dis-
The Mace & Crown
tributor. While his outside shot is still developing, and there are concerns regarding his attitude and maturity on and off the court, his ceiling is worth the risk. Best Fit: The Boston Celtics could use his energy, defense and versatility on both ends of the floor. Not to mention he would take the scoring load off of Isaiah Thomas while not taking much from his game by still allowing him to be the primary ball handler/playmaker. Jayson Tatum (Duke): Tatum has the skill and the tools necessary to be an outstanding scorer at the next level. He can score off the dribble or spotting up, which poses as a matchup nightmare for any defender due to his length, versatility and footwork to complement his skill set. He will need to further improve on his three-point shooting, ball handling and passing, but shows enough promise that these areas can improve at the next level. Best Fit: Given Rudy Gay’s age and endurance concerns, it would be in the Sacramento Kings’ best interest to find a replacement that could be the immediate number one scoring option which seems to fit Tatum’s playing style. This change could be pivotal with the departure of Demarcus Cousins. De’Aaron Fox (Kentucky): Fox has been a hot name soaring up draft boards after his stellar performance against UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. He has the physical tools to be an outstanding playmaking point guard, and an above average on ball defending. However, he does need to improve his jump shot consistency and his decision making. Overall, Fox has a ton of advantages on his journey to becoming an outstanding player. Best Fit: The Orlando Magic are in desperate need of a primary playmaker/point guard, and Fox would be a much better upgrade than Elfrid Payton. His ability to get to the hole at will, while having a decent jump shot and underrated passing skills, should give the Magic the playmaker they have been lacking.
@maceandcrown
Jonathan Isaac (Florida State): Isaac displays a high level of positive attributes out of all draftees. He possesses great length and versatility on both ends of the floor allowing him to be a dynamic scorer inside and out. Defensively, Isaac can guard almost any position on the floor, one through the four. Nevertheless, he like all other potential draft picks, has plenty of room for improvement on his strength and raw skills, but is worth the development effort. Best Fit: Since the Sacramento Kings will presumably have two top ten picks in the 2017 Draft, Isaac could be another option if they are unable to select Jayson Tatum. His ability to score inside and out on the offensive end, along with his defensive capabilities, could give the Kings a needed foundation player for their franchise. Malik Monk (Kentucky): Monk is an outstanding scorer due to his ability to score both off the dribble, as well as catching and shooting. He also possesses elite level athleticism that allows him to get to the basket and finish. He needs to improve his strength to become a better finisher around the rim, and tightened his handle to take defenders off the dribble. However, that should come with time, and could form him into a dynamic scorer in the NBA. Best Fit: The Philadelphia Sixers desperately need a two guard and a reliable scorer/shooter on the outside, given the talent of their front court is Joel Embiid, Dario Saric and newbie, Ben Simmons. With Simmons as the primary ball handler/playmaker, Monk will have plenty opportunity to capitalize on his scoring strength. Lauri Markkanen (Arizona): Markkanen is a talented sevenfooter that can shoot three pointers with ease. He embodies versatile skill set to score in the post and outside the paint. He also possesses a level of agility and fluidity on the defensive end on the perimeter, and strength to handle the inside. He could improve his post-game and needs to become more involved in blocking shots, but still has a lot of potential.
@maceandcrown
Best Fit: A primary ball handler/ playmaker would be best fit for the Dallas Mavericks, however in case they miss out on someone like Dennis Smith Jr., they could opt for Dirk’s potential successor. He would also spread the floor for the likes of Yogi Ferrell and Harrison Barnes, and provide more versatility than Nerlens Noel and Dwight Powell. Frank Ntilikina (France)*: Ntilikina possesses great length and versatility on both ends of the floor for his position. He is a scorer/ playmaker with the ability to shoot from the outside, and is also a quality defender. He needs to improve his handle and passing skills to be a point guard. Although he is another foreign player with uncertainties, he displays a high ceiling. Best Fit:This could be a no-lose situation for the Minnesota Timberwolves as they still have Ricky Rubio as the primary point guard. With the development of Frank’s off the ball work and passing, it will groom him to take over the point guard role impending Rubio’s departure. He can provide outside shooting and defense the team could use, without the pressure of a large role early in his career. Best Available Players outside Top 10: Point Guards: Jawun Evans (Oklahoma State) Evans is easily my favorite player outside of the top ten due to his outstanding scoring, and even more impressive passing ability. Despite being a bit short and a poor defender, he still has an NBA mentality any team, outside the top ten, would love to have. Xavier Rathan-Mayes (Florida State) Rathan-Mayes exhibited that he is not a true point guard yet, but he is still a capable playmaker and dynamic scorer. If he goes to a team seeking a primary scorer as oppose to a floor general, he should thrive in that position and become a quality player. Nigel Williams-Goss (Gonzaga)
M&C | WEDNESDAY | 6.14.2017 | MACEANDCROWN.COM
Sports Williams-Goss possesses a level of versatility as a scorer along with his basketball IQ and a willing passer. He is also a solid defender despite his allaround game needing improvement. I can see him being a contributor off the bench. Shooting Guards: Terrance Ferguson (USA) * Ferguson will need to work on strengthening his ball handling and his body to add more versatility to score inside and out the paint. He still has a high advantage to be a quality shooting guard due to his outside scoring ability and defensive potential. Luke Kennard (Duke) Kennard will need to tighten his handles and become a better defender. He is still a capable defender and possesses a high level of scoring basketball IQ and is capable of being a willing passer. That should help him contribute and become a quality player for any team.
Donovan Mitchell (Louisville) Mitchell’s offensive game is developing, but if it can catch up with his defensive skills and athleticism he could become a quality player. He already has a capable outside shot, he will just need to improve his ball handling to better create his own shot at the next level. Small Forwards: Justin Jackson (North Carolina) Jackson’s versatility as a scorer and defender make him valuable, but he will need to be more consistent in his ball handling and outside shooting. However, his improvement in college shows potential.
C2
Follow @macecrownsports on Twitter point shooting over the years in college and has shown offensive and defensive explosions. Although he needs to tighten his ball handling skills and outside shot, his length and versatility should make him a captivating prospect in the later round. Power Forwards: Zach Collins (Gonzaga) Collins has size, length, offensive talent and defensive capabilities as a rim protector and post defender. If he can add some variety to his offense, particularly his outside game, he can be a very solid pro.
J. Dozier (South Carolina) Dozier has length and versatility as a scorer and defender. He still has work to do on his offense, but his potential on both sides of the floor combined with his physical traits makes success in the NBA conceivable.
Ivan Rabb (California) Rabb will need to become bigger, stronger and more aggressive both offensively and defensively. Despite these drawbacks, he has great inside and outside game in the post and midrange. His three-point shot is still improving, but his foundation is ready to be built upon.
Devin Robinson (Florida) Robinson has improved his three-
J. Leaf (UCLA) Leaf will need to improve defen-
sively and develop strength and confidence. However, his offensive skill set for his size and position are too talented to pass on and should make him a quality player in the NBA. Centers: Jarrett Allen (Texas) Allen still needs time grow to his full potential, but if he achieves this development he can be a great player. He can be a mismatch offensively. He also gives effort on the boards and uses his length well on both ends. However, he will need to improve his post-game which would come with time on the court. Justin Patton (Creighton) Patton needs to increase his effort on the glass with his mediocre rebounding numbers and improve his play strength. His offensive skill set and upside as a player can be of value to some teams in the NBA. Thomas Bryant (Indiana) Bryant did have a down year but the talent is evident, and he can do it
all on both sides of the court. He will need to be more consistent on the next level if he wants to reach his potential, but he has nice qualities to be a solid big man on the court. Honorable Mentions: Solid players who could contribute being picked in the later rounds: Bam Adebayo (Kentucky), Tyler Lydon (Syracuse), Caleb Swanigan (Purdue), John Collins (Wake Forest), Tony Bradley (North Carolina), Johnathan Motley (Baylor) Bennie Boatwright (USC) Overstock Players: Players with talent that will most likely get over drafted: Dwayne Bacon (Florida State), Dillon Brooks (Oregon), Sindarius Thornwell (South Carolina), OG Anunoby (Indiana), Harry Giles (Duke), Edmond Sumner (Xavier), Kobi Simmons (Arizona), Ike Anigbogu (UCLA)
ODU Welcomes New Women's Basketball Head Coach Brittany Reigelsperger Sports Editor

A History of Operating Systems Audra Reigle Technology Editor A common factor between smartphones and computers is the use of an operating system. While the operating systems for cell phones and computers are different, both types of devices still use them. We’re going to take a look at the history of some well-known operating systems and see where they are today. Mac OS is the product of Apple, and it is typically seen on their line of computers. The first version of Mac OS, Mac System 1.0, was launched in 1984, according to Business Insider. This version of Mac OS introduced overlapping windows, “With the active window appearing on top,” and a text editor, among other features. Color support was added to thirdparty apps in Mac OS System 6.0, which launched in 1988, but the Finder remained in black and white until Mac OS System 7.0 was released in
1991. Mac OS X had versions named after wild cats, such as Cheetah and Mountain Lion, and it saw a visual overhaul that gave it the appearance similar to what we see today. The next version of Mac OS, High Sierra, will launch in the fall, according to The Next Web. The first version of Windows, named Windows 1, was launched in November 1985, according to The Guardian. When Windows 3 launched in 1990, it was “the first Windows that required a hard drive.” Windows 95, which launched in 1995, introduced the Start button and Start menu. Windows saw visual overhauls with Windows XP, Vista and 8. “Windows XP was the longest running Microsoft operating system, seeing three major updates and support up until April 2014,” according to The Guardian. Today, we have Windows 10, which has a version geared towards students, Windows 10 S, that will launch on PCs this summer, according to a Microsoft event held
The Mace & Crown
May 2. Windows operating systems also appear on cell phones. The Pocket PC ran on Windows CE OS, and it was one of the earliest renditions of Windows on cell phones, launching in 2000, according to Mashable. The HTC Surround and Samsung Focus were the first phones to run Windows Phone 7 OS, and they launched in November 2010. Microsoft is planning to reboot their Windows phones, according to Windows Central. Apple also has their own operating system for mobile devices in iOS. The first version of iOS, known as iPhone OS 1, was announced in 2007 alongside the iPhone, according to Gizmodo. While apps were available on iPhone OS 1, it wasn’t until iPhone OS 2 that third-party app support was added. The mobile OS was renamed from iPhone OS to iOS with iOS 4, and it ran on Apple’s iPods, iPhones and iPads. FaceTime was also introduced in iOS 4. Digital assistant Siri
@maceandcrown
was introduced with iOS 5, and Siri was opened to third-party developers with the release of iOS 10. iOS 11 is slated for launch this fall, according to Business Insider. Android is another mobile operating system, and it is also the biggest competitor to Apple’s iOS. All versions of Android are named after sweet treats. One of the earliest versions of Android was Donut, which introduced the Quick Search Box, according to Android. Eclair allowed users to receive voice guidance from Google Maps and make use of speech-to-text. Honeycomb put the Home, Back and Menu buttons on-screen, eliminating the physical buttons, and it became tablet-friendly. Jelly Bean allowed for multiple user support on tablets. Phones got multiple user support with the launch of Lollipop. KitKat introduced the voice assistant, allowing users to say “Ok Google” to “launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a
@maceandcrown
song.” Marshmallow allowed users to have control over what information their apps had access to through permissions. Android O is slated for launch later this summer, according to the Google I/O Conference held May 17-19. There’s a lot more technology out there than just operating systems for cell phones and computers. It’s also worth noting that Windows and Mac OS aren’t the only operating systems for computers. Linux is another example of an operating system for a computer. However, Windows and Mac OS are perhaps the most well-known among the typical consumer that isn’t heavily invested in technology, just as Android and iOS are the most well-known operating systems for smartphones. It will be interesting to see where all operating systems go in the future.

Technology Funimation Sues KissAnime Over DigitalOcean Server Keep up to date on basic tech tutorials at maceandcrown.com/technology
Daija Marrow Contributing Writer Funimation has opened a lawsuit against Kissanime after tracking an IP address to Digital Ocean through the downloads of the One Piece anime. Funimation is the most profitable anime distributor in the United States. This company obtains the rights to Japanese anime and then hires and pays the actors to do voiceovers in English. They are then able to label and sell DVD sets of these animes for hundreds of dollars. They also have a streaming service on their website that charges viewers up to $60.00 a year. This leads to the unearthing of
piracy websites. There are various websites that stream anime for free at the risk of pop-ups and viruses, and then there is Kissanime. Kissanime is one of the top 250 visited websites in America, getting millions of page visits a day. They are known best for their variety of anime as well as their reliable streaming servers. This site has been Funimation’s target going on four years since its illegal activity is a reason that Funimation’s sales are not as high as they could be. The first Digital Millennium Copyright Act, DMCA, subpoena was served on Kissanime two years ago. TorrentFreak provides an image of the official DMCA subpoena. Many may recognize it as the long message at the bottom of your Google page in
italics after Googling image results. It was implemented in 1998, and its main purpose is to protect copyrighted material since the internet has become easier to access and manipulate. Although the site has been up since years prior, a subpoena cannot be ordered over the internet. It is a legal document that must be hand-delivered to the Defendant by the Sheriff of that city. As long as six years ago, Funimation used to track down individual people who downloaded torrent files, suing hundreds for piracy. Recently, they have abandoned that strategy to catch a bigger fish, so the threat has vanished for lone torrenters. All those years back, One Piece, the #1 anime in both Japan and America was used to find any violators. This
time, with that same anime, they tracked down an IP address that lead them to see that DigitalOcean is their main service provider. DigitalOcean, Inc. is a cloud service that allows people and companies to run websites over numerous computers simultaneously and was only founded in 2011. After tracking the One Piece video to DigitalOcean, Funimation served the subpoena on them, demanding that they halt all operations to Kissanime by June 6. The name Kissanime is not said directly on the subpoena, but the wording states that DigitalOcean stop providing service to anyone who has pirated anime. In a sense, this is a good thing because piracy is against the law, but Funimation is a borderline monop-
oly in the United States. They are no stranger to targeting illegal streaming sites, but the fact that they have finally gone after Kissanime spells bad news for other popular sites such as GoGoAnime. Granted, there is no way to condone illegal activity, millions of people rely on Kissanime and would pay for it before seeing it taken down since it offers content that even Funimation does not have. Despite that, Funimation has targeted Digital Ocean, the second largest hosting company in the world in an attempt to shut down what is possibly their biggest competitor. Today is June 8 and Kissanime is still running so only time can tell from this point on if the piracy site will stay alive.
Facebook to Launch New Video Service Daija Marrow Contributing Writer The idea of a video service has become Facebook’s next marketing strategy. The New York Post reveals that the feature will be called Spotlight. This service is being created with the help of popular websites such as Buzzfeed, Vox News and others. Some of the videos on the service will be 20 to 30 minute long Facebook originals, targeting the millennial audience. Other videos
will be five to 10 minutes, created by groups and companies unaffiliated with but paid by Facebook. Ad points will be included within the each video, bringing more attention to the ad service that drives Facebook’s profits as a free social media platform. Paid video services have been growing in popularity since Hulu’s conception in 2007, Netflix’s conversion from a DVD distributor to a digital streaming service in 2011, YouTube Red’s introduction in 2014 and many other online streaming apps that have began combating the
The Mace & Crown
digital cable industry. The ad inclusion gives the illusion that the streaming add-on will be free, but according to the official MLB website, Mark Zuckerberg has paid the MLB for the right to live stream 20 games this upcoming season. Typically, live streamed sports events require a charge from the viewer, so there is no clear indication on whether or not this feature will be free. Live streaming sports games is a feature that neither Netflix or Hulu offer. Twitter began implementing a free stream of Thursday night football in
@maceandcrown
2016, and it is no secret that Zuckerberg is one to use strategies of other social media platforms to boost Facebook’s credibility and activity. Facebook will differ completely from sites such as YouTube because some of the content will be exclusive to this streaming service. Any other site obtaining this content would lead to a lawsuit. Apart from their personally owned content, Facebook will be paying other producers thousands of dollars to create videos, meaning that those creators could receive that pay directly rather than commission from monetized videos.
@maceandcrown
The profit made from partners and sponsors using their ad system is most likely to go directly to Facebook. The videos will not mimic standard shared video memes already common on the app. They are described as a completely new television series. Facebook has not personally announced any hard facts regarding the upcoming service, but Digiday has information from anonymous sources that could provide additional information if interested.

How Technology Can Help the Disabled Alex Beschler Contributing Writer Technology has progressed to the point where we can use a smartphone to navigate from a point to a destination, and highlight the fastest route and instruct the phone to send the estimated time of arrival via text all while listening to music. Since technology is so capable, one would think that being born with some handicap is no longer a big issue because of all the assistive technology available. While this is mostly true, the technology industry still lacks the complete revolution needed to assist handicapped people to live a truly independent and integrated life. Since its inception, technology has been focused on solving problems, but those with handicaps have found it difficult to use these tools since technology isn’t always user friendly.
There are various apps, gadgets and services available that alleviate certain barriers that make a handicap challenging. Before the technology revolution, those who were visually impaired found it incredibly difficult to live an independent life. As technology evolved, there have been services available to translate text to words and vice versa, helping the visually impaired write emails, documents and navigate some web pages. In fact, some software is commercially available. Dragon Dictation will go beyond the basics and become a personalized assistant by not only reading text to the user but allowing them to interact with the computer. There are also gadgets available for those with sight issues. Aira is a gadget/service hybrid that provides glasses to the user and then, at the click of a button, can provide an “agent,” or a trained specialist, to
The Mace & Crown
assist the user by alerting them their immediate surroundings and helping them navigate the vicinity. Hearing impairments can make it difficult to communicate over long distances. Phones aid in communication between individuals or groups of people, but if one has some sort of hearing disability, they cannot use them. Video chat is steadily becoming a popular platform to engage in long conversations as well. Not only is video chatting an effective way of communicating body language and human emotions, it enables those who are deaf or hearing impaired to be able to communicate over long distances. Video chatting still has one major caveat: the people chatting must be able to understand each other. If one person, for instance, doesn’t speak
@maceandcrown
American Sign Language, then it defeats the purpose of face-to-face video chatting. Thankfully, there are some technological tools and gadgets available that can aid in face-to-face communication. In 2016, two sophomores at University of Washington developed gloves that wirelessly translate sign language movements to text and speech, but they aren’t available for commercial use. However, there are some tools available for purchase that accomplish the same thing. MotionSavvy developed a tool for tablets and computers called UNI that use the camera to translate sign language to words and speech. On the horizon of the tech world is self-driving cars. These “smart” cars range in abilities, with the smartest ones able to get from one point to another with no human interference. One of the first practical uses of self-
@maceandcrown
driving cars is for those that would normally not be able to drive. The reason this is so critical for the industry is because all forms of technology should be oriented to be accessible for all. Self-driving cars are essentially being developed exactly how new tech needs to be – with universal accessibility in mind. All technological advancements that have helped the impaired live an independent life come with a major drawback: these gadgets are made and tested for wealthier handicapped individuals. Everything, from personalized speech-to-text software, to glasses that aid in alerting someone of their surroundings, come at a major cost. The biggest hindrance in the tech industry is not the lack of services available to help those impaired, but the cost associated with the gadgets and services.

'Prey' Review: Popular Shooter Returns to Xbox One, PS4 and PC Audra Reigle Technology Editor "Prey" was released by Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios on May 26, 2017 on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. This open world game is a first person survival shooter. It was made as a reboot to the original "Prey" game released on PCs in 1998. The reality that a popular shooter was being recreated worried experienced gamers causing negative responses before the game released. With almost a month since its release, the game has received an 8/10 review from IGN and other trusted sources such as Polygon and Game Informer. In the newly released title, the player acts as Morgan Yu. He/She is aboard a ship named Talos I, orbiting the moon. Morgan is attempting to
protect the world from an alien entity known as the typhon. Upon its discovery, the humans within Talos I began experimenting with the alien by implanting it into their own bodies, giving them special typhon abilities. Morgan must navigate a deadly alien infested ship with limited supplies and questionable allies. Since Morgan has no memory of himself or the past, he’s forced to make decisions based off of his quick judgment and the word of those around him. As a survival game with a horror factor done by Bethesda, it can be compared to titles such as "Fallout," "Dead Space" and "Dishonored" but becomes its own game with the level of difficulty. The beginning is slow, giving the player a feel for controls, surroundings and how the enemy will interact with them. There are three bars to start off the
The Mace & Crown
game: Health, Shield and Psi. Stamina is less important, yet precious. It appears as a transparent white bar when sprint or attack is used, and it quickly regenerates but is minimal without upgrades. Where a full bar of stamina is depleted with four swings of a wrench, five are needed to kill the weakest of typhon. Inventory can be increased with neuromod upgrades and the space is much needed. Any junk that can be picked up becomes useful since necessities such as ammo, weapons, health and quest items are created from said junk. The Talos I station is massive and has Recyclers and Fabricators scattered throughout. They are required for survival and difficult to find or keep track of so holding on to the junk until one is reached is a recurring cycle. Bethesda has concepts and Easter
@maceandcrown
eggs thrown into different series of their games. The most obvious one in this title is the name Talos, where, in the "Elder Scrolls" series, Talos is the name of a warrior God. On the Talos I station, there is a map that can be attained in Security Areas that are either locked or guarded. When that map is uploaded, locations of Recyclers, Medical Operators, ect, are revealed. This is a concept that was used in "Doom," another Bethesda title, requiring players to be strategic to get to the map or more observant if they choose to play without it. Another "Doom" take away is the weapons wheel. Instead of going to the inventory for every weapon change or being limited to only four quick options, the weapons wheel allows the player to choose between as many weapons and abilities as they desire while slow-
@maceandcrown
ing time. As far as the story goes, like the "Elder Scrolls" and "Fallout," there are full books and emails that can be read, contributing to the main story. There is also an array of optional side quests that build the main character. With that considered, the average time of gameplay is 16 hours. "Prey" is a game where the player can choose to be stealthy and strategic, run and gun or sprint past every enemy. Each approach could work, yielding different results, but the variety of enemies and limited materials forces the player to adapt. Considering the fair share of jump scares, pleasing visuals and hanging suspense, Bethesda and Arkane did not disappoint with "Prey."

Pride Weekend Sarah Hustead Contributing Writer Last year on June 12, an anti-LGBT terrorist entered the Pulse Night Club in Orlando, Florida, and killed 49 people while wounding many others. This was the largest domestic terrorist attack since 9/11 and the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, according to The New York Times. This year, as Pride Weekend draws nearer, pride feels a little bit different for me. I feel scared to go to events that are specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. I don’t go to Drag Shows at Rainbow Cactus as often as I would like be-
cause I am scared of what might happen. These last eight months, which have seen an increase of hate crimes against minorities across the board, have been the hardest to navigate since I came out as queer almost a year ago. My mind runs to awful places with curious questions similar to, “What will happen with all of us in one spot?” “Are we an easier target at events like this?” “Will someone try and kill people?” “What kind of security is being put in place to ensure the safety of all participants?” “Will they allow protestors to come into the event to spread their hate?” These questions run in my mind daily about more things than just
The Mace & Crown
Pride Weekend. I wonder what will happen if I hold my girlfriend’s hand in public, if I kiss her while we’re sitting at a red light or what will happen if I tell my employer that I am queer. I wonder if people will yell out homophobic slurs, not serve us, give us dirty looks or even hurt us. Sometimes we choose to not hold hands or kiss in public, for fears of being discriminated against or even physically hurt, like so many members of our community have. According to another New York Times article, which gathered information from the FBI, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are twice as likely to be victims of hate crimes than racial minorities are.
@maceandcrown
Only 19 states have added protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people against discrimination from their employers. A recent statistic by newsletter Fast Company states that approximately one in five lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans have reported discrimination and mistreatment from their employers because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have taken the brunt of many hate crimes and various forms of discrimination over the years. Transgender women of color are undoubtedly the most vulnerable minority in the United States. There are many beautiful things
@maceandcrown
about being in this community. One of my favorites is that no matter what we go through, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community seems to exude love and kindness despite the hatred they endure. I know that the attacks that my community goes through make us stronger and reminds us that love is the most powerful force on Earth. That love can never be wrong and that we need to hold our precious ones close, whoever they may be. Town Point Park in Downtown Norfolk will be decorated with rainbow flags and filled with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies celebrating Pride on the weekend of June 16.

The Argument for Structural Purism: Relating to Sandwiches Michael Abney Digital Editor A picture has been circulating around the internet that has sparked many lively debates and many unenlightened and, frankly, ignorant beliefs. Anyone who believes that a hot dog is a sandwich is not only blatantly ignoring common sense, but is completely disregarding the English
language. Sandwich’s etymology traces back to the fourth Earl of Sandwich. The story surrounds the busy schedule of the immorality of the Earl as he was too busy attending to his gambling habits he didn’t have enough time to cook a meal and thus the sandwich was born. As with many words in the English language they evolve over time. For some that may mean that the words lose meaning overtime.
However, the contrary seems to be more accurate, as words evolve they don’t lose their origin but take from it and develop into something new. The surname, Sandwich developed from the German town of Kent and then it evolved to reference the man whose family came from this town and his creation, and as it evolved it began to reference the conceptual understanding of what his creation was. As the word became a verb, it referenced the
concept of Sandwich’s creation, to insert or squeeze between two other people or things. This definition is crucial in understanding the action behind what creates a sandwich and why a hot dog cannot be considered a sandwich. When someone calls a hot dog a sandwich they fail to understand the spatial understanding of what constitutes a sandwich. It is clear from the verb that follows in the evolution it
must have three parts: an object and two other objects acting upon an object. This gives it the spatial understanding of being sandwiched. While the word has evolved to encompass many things like hoagies, ice cream sandwiches, and grilled cheeses; neither a hot dog or pop tart will ever be a sandwich.
Truth in a Changing World Alex Scruggs News Editor Being relayed relevant information and knowing what’s going on in your community is a service that will always be required. Since the 1600s newspapers, like the Mace & Crown, have provided this service. It’s no secret that printed newspapers are dying out, and have been since the rise of the internet. But of course, this doesn’t mean that we have to abandon our ideals of staying current. As the Mace & Crown makes its transfer from weekly newspaper to quarterly magazine, I thought it would be a good idea to explore the role of journalism in our changing world – and question whether things pertaining to the press are really changing that much. 30 years ago, it was almost a ritual for some people in the morning. Waking up, brewing some coffee and reading the news. The idea of starting your day with gaining a greater understanding of current issues seems like second nature to people who like to stay informed.
I’m sure it’s not news to anyone that what played a large role in the ritual from 30 years ago becoming obsolete today is smartphones. The common morning ritual now is waking up and checking your phone. Along with missed texts and socialmedia updates, updates from journalism and news organizations can be found on the internet and their respective apps. This means that entire articles, old and new, can be read on a single apparatus. To a large extent, this new way of living is highly beneficial. We can pick what we want to read, when we want to read it. We can look up information almost instantly, and there’s a lot more coming out daily than can be found in the daily newspapers. However, this presents a potential down-side to staying current. Those who subscribe to large publications such as the Post and the Times know that what they read is on the very credible end of the news spectrum. This is because large publications are widely read and therefore greatly scrutinized. While browsing the internet or Facebook, one comes
across several news sites. Some big, some small, some old and some new. But with the potential for anyone to post articles and stories to some publications online, how do we know what is credible? “Fake news” isn’t a recent fad tied to our country’s new president ravaging a war against the main-stream media, it’s the result of anyone being able to post something online and call it news. If being widely read leads to a publication being greatly scrutinized, what does that say about the thousands of online “news sites” that don’t have a large following? It says that the pressure is lower for them to get it right. To find and cite credible sources that back their claims. I like to keep up with the big publications and news sites for that reason alone, the search for credibility is always ongoing, but it helps when there are thousands of readers like myself keeping these publications in check. When reading a news story on a smaller site, there are several strategies which can be implemented to determine if the article bears a majority of truth. In my opinion, the
most effective albeit time-consuming strategy is to surf around. If you read a seemingly big story on a smaller news site, check elsewhere on the internet and find the same story presented by different sites. Once a story breaks, whether local, national or international, several publications will be there to provide readers with their take. If other stories present the information in a similar way, you can be more confident that the news is credible. This strategy would be difficult to implement on campus, however, as the Mace & Crown is the only news source focused on ODU. Don’t turn your nose at us though. Remember that staying informed within community issues gives you the ability to involve yourself and interact with campus from a more current perspective. With the magazine coming soon and the newspaper out the door, some may be worried about the Mace’s weekly dose of news turning into quarterly feature-stories. There have always been, and will always be feature stories in the Mace. What bet-
The Mace & Crown
@maceandcrown
@maceandcrown
ter way to relay news to readers than tying them in with members of the community and telling a story? But just as feature stories will always have a place with the Mace, so will hard and breaking news. Stories within all beats, including breaking news, will continue to be published on the Mace & Crown website between magazine issues. As the campus’ only dedicated news source, we have a responsibility to relay the truth in a timely and credible way to members of the community. Although our world is changing, the need to stay current will never die out. It has remained since the beginning of journalism. I look forward to working on and helping complete our first issue of the new magazine, just as I look forward to continuing the publishing of breaking news on our website. Changes are a part of our world. Stay current, stay involved and stay skeptical. Never stop searching for the truth.
