Michelle Obama Talks Fruits and Veggies Amy Poulter Arts and Entertainment Editor First Lady Michelle Obama visited the ODU campus on Friday, Nov. 20, to join Team FNV in their campaign to put more fruits and veggies on plates. Joined by many high-profile celebrities and athletes, the loud and rowdy event had area students singing and dancing all afternoon.

Led by the Partnership for a Healthier America, Team FNV’s party at ODU drove healthy eating into the spotlight at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The event brought several of Team FNV’s most prominent supporters along, including actresses Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, Grammy-winning singers Ashanti and Estelle, pro athletes Charles Mann and Tom Dolan and American Idol-

winner Jordin Sparks. The First Lady was introduced to the roaring crowd by ODU football’s starting safety, Christian Byrum. Created in Norfolk in June, FNV has already placed billboards throughout the seven cities, created commercials and advertisements for television and radio and launched an active campaign in local communities.

EATING CAMPAIGN AT FNV LIVE!
“This national movement started right here in Hampton Roads, Virginia, where FNV has already done things like sponsored the Norfolk Tides baseball team and the ODU football team,” Obama said. Known for her activism against childhood obesity with Let’s Move!, Obama urged the arena packed with young students to consider how the commercials and billboards they see every day influence the food they choose to consume. “Before you know it, you’re at the store loading up on whatever it is, even if you know it won’t make you feel good or you don’t really need it,” Obama said. Alba, who recently launched her own health-inspired business, Honest Company, echoed Obama’s sentiments. Attempting to make fresh produce a more
attractive food option to teens, Alba encouraged attendees to take pictures and videos throughout the event and use #TeamFNV to share them throughout social media. “If big brands can have the celebrity endorsements, the cool commercials, the logos and the social media reach, then so can fruits and veggies,” Alba said. Between celebrity speakers and musical performances, local radio DJs Dominique Da Diva of 103 Jamz and Shaggy from Z104 kept the crowd on its feet, dancing while DJ MICK played the hottest hits. Challenging games centered around fruits and vegetables were played by the A-list celebs and athletes, as well as social media stars Nash and Hayes Grier, and Indi and Skye Cowie.

ODU cheerleaders were also on hand to amp up the crowd and pass out free t-shirts and mini soccer balls to excite students. The FNV movement is focused in two markets, Hampton Roads and Fresno, California. Both areas were chosen based on obesity rates, diversity and geography. Obama appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” earlier this year to draw attention to the FNV campaign. She also participated in a skit on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” called “Eat Your Effin Vees” to give fruits and veggies their place in the limelight.

Big Blue Take Back Reclaims the Night Jacob Hall Staff Writer Friday night saw Kaufman Mall filled with crowds of students, glow sticks waving through the air, who had a sense of determination about them. A crowd of around 100 students gathered together to take a stand against sexual and domestic violence in “Big Blue Take Back.” Last year’s “Big Blue Take Back” was the first at ODU in five years. The event is ODU’s spin on the traditional “Take Back The Night” march. The purpose is to stand against sexual and domestic violence and give an opportunity for survivors to tell their stories. The turnout was impressive as it was one of the coldest nights of the semester. “I’m here because I’ve heard so many stories of it,” Caitlin Rice, a junior, said. “I’m here to support my friend as well.” Before the event formally kicked off, groups of students roamed between different tables that were set up for supporting organizations, such as ODU Safe Space, YWCA of Norfolk, Men of Quality and MPower. The scattered groups of attendees, clutching their glow sticks, joined together into one crowd as the president of ODU Vox, Derrion Hawkins, took to the podium on the steps of the Webb Center. “Tonight we will take a pledge to admit that we need to do something big or small to make a difference,” Hawkins said. When the crowd was asked to cheer if they had taken the pledge before, and then asked to cheer if they were taking it for the first time tonight, the crowd erupted into applause both times. Everyone was reminded that they were there to acknowledge the severity of the epidemic of sexual assault and domestic violence and that they can stand up against it. Following Hawkins speech, the night took a more solemn turn. A poem was recited from the podium that followed the story of an individual who was sexually assaulted by a close, trusted friend. The poem ended with encouragement, stating that the author will fight back and survive despite the horrible thing
that has happened. The poem set the mood of grim determination throughout the crowd that would prevail for the rest of the night. “I hope this event is educational and inspires you to continue in the fight against this issue,” Christopher Ndiritu, ODU student body president, said. Ndiritu shared information about many resources that ODU has available that can help prevent forms of assault. These resources range from “Safe Ride,” which provides shuttles around campus and “Safe Walk,” which allows friends to track you through the LiveSafe app if you’re walking alone. The microphone was then passed to Ellen Neufeldt, vice president for Student Engagement and Enrollment Services. “I want to speak for all of us when I say without you students it would all be for none,” Neufeldt said. “You’re standing up tonight and saying we’re going to take it back. We are going to make sure that Old Dominion is a safe place free of violence.” This October, 30 administrators were trained at ODU in the Green Dot Program. The program, which began at the University of Kentucky, trains staff to be able to identify and help in situations of sexual or domestic violence that may arise. These administrators were brought on stage and recognized for their achievements. Attendees were then asked to take a pledge against sexual violence. “Monarchs unite! Take back the night!” echoed throughout campus as the students marched around Kaufman Mall. When the march ended, the podium was opened to anyone who wanted to share stories. A number of students bravely took to the stage, many not sharing their names. They all shared stories and statements of defiance and recovery, while some students became visibly angry at how long the problem has gone unrecognized. More than one student was brought to tears recounting their experiences. After the stories were told, the night ended and students and staff were reminded to spread awareness and to remember that anyone can make a difference.

New Shopping Center Proposed Near ODU Jason Kazi Ad Manager Williamsburg-based developer Guernsey Tingle Architects is currently discussing plans ti build a large shopping center called “West Norfolk Marketplace about a mile South of campus. The plans calll for a six-building, grocery store-anchored, 147,758-square-foot shopping center, The proposed site for the project is along Hampton Blvd. stretching from West 27th St. to the Norfolk Southern railway crossing overpass. Access to the site will be provided from 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th Streets. The shopping center is slated to include a 22,000-square-foot grocery store, a 35,000-square-foot sporting goods store, 12,000 square feet of restaurants and 13,758 square feet of retail sales and services. The area is currently zoned as both industrial and commercial, mostly occupied by abandoned industrial buildings. However, the builders are proposing to change the zoning to commercial after meeting numerous times with the Norfolk City Council and Norfolk City Planning Commis-
sion. While the Central Hampton Boulevard Plan doesn’t recommend this area to be used for commercial purposes, the shopping center is expected to adhere to the plan in that it won’t add to existing traffic on Hampton Blvd. In order to do so, the builder proposed to add a traffic signal to the intersection at West 26th St. and further improve the Elizabeth River Trail. The builder also has proposed providing 523 parking spaces (against the required 522) in addition to 87 street parking spaces. Last year, the residents of Lambert’s Point were informed at a civic league meeting of a shopping center, 250-unit apartment building (now off the table), brewery, golf course extension, water treatment plant extension (now under construction), a Starbucks location, a pet store and gun store under consideration to be built in the vicinity of the area nearby the planned shopping center’s site now under discussion with city officials. The shopping center has been creating mixed opinions from residents of the Lambert’s Point community which borders Old Dominion University on the west side of Hampton

Blvd. In late August of this year, the Lambert’s Point Civic League submitted a petition to the City of Norfolk Planning Commissioners, complaining that this shopping center reportedly will be home to another high price organic food market, with the relatively new Fresh Market just a short walk from the southern end of the proposed shopping center, and both another pet store and gun store. They also propose, according to city council records, that “the development project was conceived via a backroom deal with the initial presentation being held in Ghent and not Lambert’s Point.” The residents of the Lambert’s Point community, in addition to students, residents and business owners in their petition, have proposed and petitioned to the city that the developer build and open a moderately priced supermarket as the best project concept in the area to benefit residents, students and traffic flow on Hampton Blvd. The project will continue to be discussed with the Planning Commission and the City Council through the coming months before final approval.

With a European tour complete, the NorVa will soon be struck by BØRNS “Electric Love” and long locks on Sunday, Nov. 29. The 23-year-old, who was born in Michigan but now resides in LA, released his first album, “Dopamine,” in October which included hits such as “Electric Love” and “10,000 Emerald Pools.” Earlier this year, Taylor Swift gave Borns a shout-out on social media, which immediately boosted his fan club. Since January, he’s gone from being a little-known solo artist to an internationally touring performer sharing his cool, electronic sound. “It’s been a whirlwind, absolutely,” Borns said. “This past year has been probably one of my busiest artistically both in the studio and touring. I’ve never toured as much as I have recently.” The idea of love as a chemical reaction between two people inspires most of Borns’ songs, which spurred the title of his album, “Dopamine.” “Even if you aren’t physically with some one, the resonance of you two together is still chemically in you,” he said. “That’s what fantasies and memories are made out of. A lot of my muses on my record were far away.” Even though the chemistry of love can survive the distance, the distance he feels from the social media, photo-snapping generation concerns him. “Capturing the moment is almost more important than being in the moment,” he said about his audiences on tour. “Sometimes I almost don’t feel human.” Borns’ falsetto-high voice combined with pulsing beats and mystical lyrics gives a special flavor to

his music. He said his move to California and collaboration with his producer, Tommy English, together created the BØRNS sound and style. Borns and English share similar backgrounds including Midwest homes, which made it easy for them to jive and create together. “We are kinda kindred spirits in that way,” Borns said. When it comes to describing his songs, Borns can’t quite pick where he fits in the music scene. “It’s just fun music to make,” he said. “I guess its just going to be selfexplanatory. It’s just going to be what it is, for whoever is attracted to it.” Whatever the music is has attracted people from all backgrounds and demographics. Borns said the one thing he’s noticed is a large variety of fans at his shows. “It’s not one age group or gender, it’s just kinda like, pretty all encompassing. And I dig that,” he said. It seems the “instant classic” foretelling from Taylor Swift on Instagram could be holding true. Perhaps Borns has the real classics to thank for their influence. Borns said he grew up listening to the Bee Gees, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and that they are his musical inspirations. Borns’ show on Nov. 29 will be his first time in Norfolk and is part of the U.S. leg of his “Dopamine” tour, which comes between two stints in Europe. Borns said touring is “pretty insane.” He finds it enjoyable, but also feels the drain of constantly packing up and moving on to a new place. “There are definitely times where it seems pretty arduous,” he said, “but there’s always a payoff, you know? Performing and having people enjoy your record and your music and everything, and seeing new audiences every night.”

Slightly Stoopid Mellows out the NorVa Zach Moeller Staff Writer Infamous reggae/rock fusion group Slightly Stoopid kicked off a two night stay in Norfolk on Nov. 13. The ambiance inside the NorVa was made very clear as concertgoers filed into the venue: good vibes and good times were to be had by all. The room, which contained people sporting long hair and rasta-colored clothing, held the aroma of beer and freshly burnt incense. Opening band Stick Figure’s dog, Cocoa, could be seen on stage quietly chewing on a toy, only adding to the relaxed atmosphere. Taking the stage shortly after scheduled, Stick Figure quickly set the tone for the rest of the evening. The group had just released their new album “Set in Stone” that day, and were more than happy to share their new music with a highly receptive crowd. Stick Figure blasted through songs like “Coming Home” and “Smokin’ Love,” all the while encouraging the audience to dance and sing along. Lead singer Scott Woodruff told the crowd that it was an honor to tour with Slightly Stoopid. “These guys are the reason I started playing
reggae music. You can do anything in this world if you just put your mind to it,” he said. Slightly Stoopid’s set prompted attendees to move again, while another, less legal fragrance floated amongst the crowd. The bar chords that rang out in “Bandelero” provided a rhythm for the crowd to bounce to, while heavy bass was more felt than heard, pulsing outwards. In an instant, The NorVa became a giant dance floor, and smiles were seen all around. Frontmen Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald traded instruments several times, handing off the bass and guitar to each other, proving the musical talent and diversity that they possess. All songs were enjoyed by an ebullient crowd, but hits like “Officer” and “Devil’s Door” triggered an even more lively reaction. The saxophone of Karl Denson rang out over melodic basslines and steady percussion of both a drum kit, as well as conga set. Cocoa ran out on stage once more, resulting in a burst of cheer. The San Diego group have been actively touring this year. Even after the June release of their newest album entitled “Meanwhile…Back at the Lab,” the band made sure to diversify the setlist perfectly, ensuring that songs
from all releases were heard. Doughty leaned towards the mic, exclaiming, “Virginia is always a good time!” After slowing down and playing “No Cocaine,” along with several other songs, the group thanked the crowd before exiting the stage. Following the audience’s persistent applause and cheering, Doughty once more appeared, this time solo and with an acoustic guitar. The soft intro to “Collie Man” was strummed and the crowd quietly, but eagerly, sang along. Following the peaceful melody “Closer to the Sun,” the band invited their conga percussionist, Oguer “OG” Ocon, up to the mic to beatbox while other band members rapped over the beat. Near the end of the night, Stick Figure came back out to join Slightly Stoopid on stage, and all musicians performed the song “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Both bands once again thanked everyone for coming out and supporting their music before exiting the stage for good. Shuffling out of the doors into the chilly November air, fans could be heard praising the performance, or saying that they couldn’t wait to return for the band’s performance at The NorVa the following night.

Logic “The Incredible True Story”
Courtesy of Def Jam Records
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, known by his stage name Logic, has reemerged with “The Incredible True Story,” his sophomore follow-up to the highly successful 2014 debut, “Under Pressure.” The Maryland rapper takes us on an epic, futuristic sci-fi journey depicting an uninhabitable earth with a colony of five million survivors that reside in a space station. Logic’s wordplay and lyric style on “The Incredible True Story” appear more determined and passionate compared to his debut album. As a result, the record reflects a diversity of
topics including personal reflections on finding success in life to being influenced by his love of anime, sci-fi, film and nerd culture. With tracks like “Young Jesus,” “Like Woah” and “Fade Away,” Logic demonstrates the continuing evolution of his rapper talents alongside being a record producer and engineer. The album sonically delivers with diverse ‘90s samples from boom bap, jazz, trap, soul and rock. While citing Wu-Tang Clan as an early influence, Logic aspires to one day work with famed hip-hop and rap

mogul, Kanye West. “Contact” and “City of Stars” borrow from the Kanye vibe while the cut “Paradise” lyrically echoes the flavor of an OutKast track. With guest appearances from Big Lenbo, Lucy Rose and Jesse Boykins III, “The Incredible True Story” suggests another big stepping-stone for Logic. As an adventurous concept album with a film accompaniment, the record conveys the metaphorical story of a rapper coming from a difficult, personal past and upbringing to hard work and well-deserved success.
Kurt Cobain
‘Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings’ Kurt Cobain’s “Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings” is his only solo album released posthumously and also serves as the soundtrack to the HBO documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.” This 13-track collection reflects on music found recorded on Cobain’s personal cassettes while the deluxe 31-track set offers pieces from the documentary. These 13 tracks offer a very raw, unpolished and drifting focus from Cobain as he wanders from piece to piece. Nirvana scholars may value the importance of these tracks while
those new to Cobain’s musical legacy may see the offering as a step backwards in the study of the infamous Nirvana frontman. “Montage” is an invitation to sit with Cobain to get a personal, intimate listen to his musical persona. As he sings and plays guitar, there is a spatial element that lets you listen and drift within the songs, making you forget that his singing may not be pitch perfect and the guitar may be slightly out of tune. One gem that stands out is Cobain’s cover of “And I Love Her” from
The Beatles. It is also complemented by other more structured takes such as “Been A Son” and “Sappy.” Even in its most happy moments, “Montage” possesses a somewhat dark and melancholy tone, reflected in some alternate guitar tunings and Cobain’s vocal character and mood. Since Cobain’s tragic suicide in 1994, “Montage Of Heck: The Home Recordings” is a fitting revisit and testament of his talent and contribution to the grunge scene and alternative rock genres with Nirvana. The Mace & Crown
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ eponymous debut studio album delivers the tenor voice of Rateliff with his gritty band to the soul revival complete with a horn section. Refined on many musical levels, Rateliff & his Night Sweat compatriots deliver a listening experience that is earthy, yet unpolished and unapologetic. “Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats” is a compilation of heartfelt testimonies released on the Stax label, the Memphis birthplace of such legendary soul men as Otis Redding
and Isaac Hayes. Though Rateliff is an accomplished solo singer-songwriter, it is his work with the Night Sweats that sees them playing the soul of Americana into the midnight hour. From the Dylan-esque ramblings of “I Need Never Get Old” to The Drifters soul in “Mellow Out,” the record is chock-full of vintage soul, rock, R&B and the revivalist spirit. While the songwriting ghosts of the Memphis Sound influence the album, it is also a mix of Tom Petty and The Blues Brothers we hear that help unfold the heart of the record.
@maceandcrown
@maceandcrown
Other soulful tracks to consider are the four-on-the-floor stomp feel of “Look It Here” to the sexy playfulness of “Shake.” The born again feel of “S.O.B.” showcases the band’s command and control of the soul dynamic led by Rateliff’s soft, edgy vocals that erupt without warning into an ecclesiastical howl powerful enough to bring even the most outcast sinner back to the church. Watch for Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats as they bring their soul revival to The NorVa on Saturday, December 12.

“Creed”: Giving Thanks for This Rocky Spin Off George Plank Staff Writer This Thanksgiving, after the festivities have died down, many will flock to the movie theater to see what new films are out for the holiday season. One such movie vying for the audience’s attention comes punching its way from MGM. “Creed”, coming to theaters on Nov. 25, is the story of Adonis Johnson, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, one of the greatest boxers in the world. Adonis never got to know his famous father as he died before he was born. He is taken from a juvenile
detention facility to live with Apollo Creed’s widow, Mary Anne Creed. Years later, Adonis, played by Michael B. Jordan, unable to quell his desire to fight any longer, quits his desk job in order to begin boxing full time. Unfortunately for him, every gym in Los Angeles knows his father and how he met his end in the ring, and refuses to train him. Creed then moves to Philadelphia under the name Apollo Johnson in the hopes that Rocky Balboa, one of his father’s closest friends and rivals, will train him to box. Much like the main character, the film itself struggles to distance itself from the legacy of those that came be-
fore it. There is an ample amount of emphasis placed on Rocky Balboa in this film. Little callbacks are scattered throughout to entice the most dire of fans, from remixes of familiar tunes in the “Rocky” franchise to minor parallels to other “Rocky” movies. As a stand-alone film, “Creed” succeeds marvelously. It tells the tale of a man trying to break away from expectations and make his own way. This theme is driven home by the pressure from others to fight under his late father’s name. Instead of trumpeting his heritage loudly, he chooses to stay true to himself first and succeed without any special treatment or privilege.
As a “Rocky” film, “Creed” holds true to spirit of the series. Rocky Balboa, the boxer who had the eye of the tiger and a heart on fire, has gone from student and fighter to trainer and mentor to another up-and-coming boxer. The film is not afraid to show us the scars and heartbreak that time has taken on the character and it uses those to drive the plot forward in a meaningful way. “Creed” serves as much as a spin-off to the “Rocky” movies as a loving tribute to the series in the same way that Grudge Match was a tribute to “Rocky” and “Raging Bull.” The film has all the excitement and
action that moviegoers expect to see. When each punch is landed, viewers will feel the personal impact more so. The makeup team for the film convincingly convey the physical toll that fighting takes on the combatants. The intense angles and quick edits, showing every possible degree of the fight, let the audience feel as if they’re part of the action. “Creed” may not be the right film for those that get squeamish at the sight of blood or for those that have never connected with the “Rocky” franchise. If you’re looking for a film that packs in the action, this is the film to see this holiday season.

Bae loves DelVec’s. Photo courtesy: Del Vecchios
Picnic At Whitehurst Beach: Who says that dating has to be fancy? An all-time American classic, the picnic is a staple that should not be underestimated, especially when it is at Whitehurst Beach. With the distinctive aroma of the beach as waves beat along the shore, any couple can have their perfect date here. Whether it is taking a stroll onto the pier to gaze into the sky or daring your bae to get in the water, there are many ways for remarkable memories to be made. Stop by the P.O.D. to grab some inexpensive treats to feed each other. Grab a blanket and find that perfect spot to snuggle up with your date while watching the sunset.
Breakfast Dining Like Champions on Campus: Mornings can make or break us, and one way to make it is to spend it with that one person. Two places that don’t break it are Starbucks and Borjo Coffee House. With Starbucks locations inside the Webb Center and on Monarch Way, inexpensive cuisines and flavorsome beverages guarantee a stimulating start to a day together. Starbucks, with its assortment of diverse refreshments and foods, can make anyone smile. Borjo is a spot full of daily specials with indoor and outdoor seating and a friendly atmosphere. With prices averaging around $12 for couples, both coffee houses will give you and your date a beautiful start to your day.
Pizza Lunch For A Dollar: Every college has its own special pizza joint and Del Vecchios on 47th Street is ODU’s. Pizzas, pastas, strombolis and more can be found on their menu at college-friendly prices. Of course, the menu is also home to all of our favorite cheese-covered foods. The greatest thing about this pizza parlor is that from 2 to 5 p.m., they serve dollar slices.Yes, Monarchs, for only a dollar, couples can fill themselves to their heart’s content with pizza, and who doesn’t secretly want that? Take it from the advice of senior Morgan Portillo. “It is a good meal for a great price and a simple date for kids on a budget. I do it all the time,” she said.

NETFLIX AND CHILL? FIVE TITLES TO WATCH Megan Snyder Contributing Writer
As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, bundle up and de-stress this winter with these five must-sees streaming on Netflix now.

“Master of None”
The brainchild of “Parks and Recreation” star Aziz Ansari and writer Alan Yang, “Master of None” originally sold as a series about dating in the 21st Century but quickly evolved into something much richer and more complex. Featuring a diverse cast of relative newcomers to the silver screen, the first season chronicles the “personal and professional” struggles of Dev Shah (Ansari), a first-generation Indian actor living in New York City. With episodes like “Plan B,” “Parents,” and “The Other Man,” the show readily appeals to Millennials but not exclusively, as it also addresses the systemic racism plaguing American television, the plight of the Eastern immigrant, gender politics, and more. What FX’s “Louie” and “Married“ taught younger audiences about “adulting,” Master hilariously critiques, offering a fresh take an entire generation’s late blooming.

“City of God”
Nominated for four Academy Awards, “City of God” follows a band of Brazilian boys into manhood in the crime-ridden slums of Rio de Janeiro where crippling poverty drives some to the top of an historic drug dealing operation while others watch innocently from the sidelines. In the resulting war between rival gangs, however, no one is neutral, and narrator Rocket must choose a side. The outreaching arms of Christ the Redeemer and round facial features of the truly impressive child actors of this film directly contrast the violent bloodshed, providing a stimulating viewing experience. Coupled with the stunning cinematography, English-speaking audiences won’t mind enabling subtitles for this foreign drama.

“Luther”
With all the thrill and grit of “Breaking Bad,” BBC’s “Luther” is not your mom’s crime drama. Portrayed by the epitome of cool, Idris Elba plays troubled yet brilliant Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, a modern Sherlock Holmes, whose undying servitude to the victims of London’s Serious Crime Unit brings him much grief and suffering. The series explores the theme of good versus evil in depth as Luther risks his career and, at times, his life to uphold not the law but justice. Just don’t grow too attached to any of the supporting characters and definitely download the theme song, Paradise Circus by Massive Attack. Season four of “Luther” is now in the works.

“Moonrise Kingdom”
With eccentric camera angles, a vivid and inviting color palette, one dead dog, and Bill Murray, Wes Anderson maintains his hold on the Halloween-costumes-for-hipsters market with “Moonrise Kingdom,” the awkward and tender love story of two 12 year-olds whose angstdriven jaunt into the New England wilderness ends abruptly when a record storm threatens their otherwise quiet coastal community. Ed Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, and (of course) Jason Schwartzman round out an ensemble cast in this visual feast.
“Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp”
To have not watched this Netflix Original series by now is a testament to will and ignorance. A prequel to the 2001 dud turned cult classic “Wet Hot American Summer,” all eight episodes of Wet Hot take place within the first day of summer, 1981, at Camp Firewood where big names like Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks play wholesome and horny teenaged counselors. Their slapstick antics are only magnified when a pit of steaming, green toxic waste is discovered in the woods, threatening the whole camp. Naturally, a training montage ensues as the reclusive, retired rock star hiding out in one of the abandoned cabins saves the day.

ODU Men’s Basketball continue their home winning streak defeating Morgan State 79-48.
MEN’S BASKETBALL GETS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN Alex Brooks Staff Writer Old Dominion Men’s Basketball came into the game on Nov. 18 riding a 26-game win streak at the Ted and was looking to extend the fifth longest home streak against the Morgan State Bears. The Bears were off to the worst start possible as they had dropped their first two games of the season. The Men’s Basketball team extended that streak to 27 as they got a comfortable 79-48 win. Contributions from a few of the newcomers of this team helped ODU cruise to victory. The Bears started hot taking a 9-2 lead on the Monarchs, the
biggest deficit they have faced this season. But the lack of height hurt Morgan State earlier as Denzell Taylor looked like he was grabbing anything and everything that hit the rim, finishing with 10 rebounds and 12 points, recording his first double-double of the season. Freeman was contained the majority of the game, only scoring 11 on eight shots but pulling down seven boards. Baker, on the other hand, was shut down the entire game, going 0-5 with four of those shots coming from behind the arc, and only being able to hit 1-2 from the charity stripe. Kyle Thomas for the Bears played all 40 minutes, an impressive mark, dropped 15 of his team’s measly
48 points, and grabbed seven of the 25 total rebounds they got. That was 17 rebounds less than the Monarchs, who mounted an immaculate 42 boards. Thomas was the only bright spot for the Bears, but what will be remembered most from their trip to the Ted was the fiery tirade from Coach Bozeman, who received a technical foul midway through the first half before exploding and looking as though the officiating crew may eject him from the game. The ejection might have been a critical point in the game as it looked as though the game was slipping away from his team, and their coach getting tossed may have sparked a run. But after walking up
and down the bench yelling nonsense, he regained his composure and was quiet the rest of the game. Aaron Bacote on the other hand was making quite a bit of noise as he flooded the scoreboard with 22 points going 8-15 and only playing 24 minutes. With a big game on Saturday against Purdue, it was crucial for ODU to bully the weaker Morgan State Bears from a morale stand point. Getting Bacote to build up his confidence before the big game was key because even though Freeman had an off night, he should have his A-game ready when Saturday rolls around. A possible big loss for the Monarchs is Brandan Stith with a possible knee or ankle injury. He

went down grimacing in pain with about five minutes left in the game. He is scheduled for an MRI on Thursday and ODU fans are hoping for the best.

Lady Monarchs Fall 61-35 to Miami Matt O’Brien Sports Editor
Old Dominion women’s basketball was coming off a 14-point victory against Wagner College as they took on the Miami Hurricanes in their third contest of the season. The Monarchs were led by Jennie Sims who raked up 16 points and eight rebounds. Sims and the Lady Monarchs ultimately fell short at 61-35. ODU cut the deficit to as little as four points but the Hurricanes offense proved to be overwhelming. “They came out a little shell-shocked, I was glad to see them make a run in the second half, especially after going into the half down 12,” said Susan Montgomery of Monarch Media. Despite a large margin of defeat, there were some bright spots for the Lady Monarchs defensively. The defense held the Hurricanes to under 40 percent shooting from the field. The Hurricanes are one of the best shooting teams in the country and have received votes to be ranked in the top 25 best teams in the country. Both teams came out strong defensively, though neither team got off to a hot start on the offense. The Lady Monarchs were held to just six first quarter points on 3 of 8 shooting. A 14-2 run at the end of half by Miami proved hard to come back from for the Lady
Monarchs. After another big run by the Hurricanes, the Lady Monarchs went into the half down 32-20. After some adjustments, they really built off some momentum in the second half. “The team moved faster on the offensive end. At first they were looking a little stangnant, but created some space and starting hitting open shots,” said Montgomery. Leading scorer Sims, was held to just six points in the second half. One of the Lady Monarchs biggest contributors was Junior Center Ije Ajemba. Ajemba has eight points and seven boards in 32 minutes. ODU’s finest stretch came in the third quarter when they went on an 8-0 run and narrowed the deficit to just four points. But streaky basketball proved to be the story of this game. The Hurricanes posted an 18-0 run with five minutes left in the third and never looked back. The next test for the Lady Monarchs will be another tough matchup against East Tennessee State. ETSU is another 20 win team like the Hurricanes last year. “This is a great Miami team. In the next five days off they have got to work on rebounding the basketball and finding some continuity on offense,” Montgomery said. ETSU stands at 2-2 and is coming off a 69-46 victory against Brevard College.

Restaurants Implementing New Technology Audra Reigle Contributing Writer Technology is changing the way people go out to eat. Some restaurants are providing customers with the option to use touchscreen tablets to complete their food orders and payments electronically. Chili’s is one of the chains that has started to offer Ziosk tablets, according to an article by CBS News in New York. Photo courtesy of: Ziosk The Ziosk can also be used to call the server over, according to an NPR article that shows how the tablets have been used in an Uno Pizzeria. They won’t replace servers entirely but merely assist them in serving customers and allowing them to get in and out in a timely manner.

Photo courtesy of: Panera Bread Ordering kiosks are also being placed in Panera stores to help with the ordering process, according to a USA Today article. Customers can either go to the ordering kiosk or the cash register to order their food. Panera has also enabled customers to use their phones or laptops to order food and have it brought to their table. Panera is removing cash registers in stores, but the employees who worked those registers will not lose their jobs. Instead, they now assist with preparing food or delivering food to the customers. Photo courtesy of: Mc’Donald’s McDonald’s has also started to roll out self-service kiosks in their restaurants in the U.S. and overseas. The touchscreen kiosks will allow the ordering process to be sped up
and give customers more control in customizing their order, according to a Business Insider article. With the addition of the kiosks in select stores, the need for cashiers is diminished. Those workers could instead be relocated to help with the kitchen to provide better customer service. iPads are also being used in other industries, mainly retail, in order to customize points of sale. TechCrunch reported that Shopify launched six apps in July 2015 to allow merchants to promote sales, print receipts and process loyalty cards among other functions. One of the biggest fears with these technologies is that they will eventually replace humans. However, these technologies are ultimately made to help the employees rather than take their jobs from them.
@maceandcrown
@maceandcrown
The tablets and kiosks in restaurants allow customers to tailor their experience to their own expectations. For the kiosks, it allows employees to move away from the register and assist in getting food out to customers at a faster rate. The kiosks also reduce the risk of human error. If a customer wanted a Big Mac without the onions from McDonald’s, they could go up to the kiosk and put that in themselves, rather than going up to a cashier who may misunderstand or forget to put in “no onions” when inputting the order. With iPads being used at points of sale, it allows for more comprehensive sales control through the usage of apps on the device. Ultimately, these technologies are meant to assist, not take away jobs.

3 Perfect Apps for College Students (And 1 That is Questionable) Ross Reelachart Technology Editor Not all apps are created equal, and some are better for the college student than others. Here are three downloadable apps — and one that isn’t — that could make university life a little easier, and frequently, inexpensive.
Project 529
Getting around town and campus is a problem with many solutions for college students. Many choose the cheap and healthy choice of riding a bicycle between classes, home and town. But bicycles are also a common target for theft due to their nature of getting left unattended, with or without a lock. According the National Bike Registry, 1.5 million bicycles are stolen a year. “Project 529” aims to help combat that alarming statistic by empowering smart device users to help each other and aid the police. Both an online network and a smart device app, “Project 529” walks users through a few simple steps to help ensure that stolen bikes are recovered quickly and safely. First, by instructing users to take five minutes to photograph and store important identifying elements of their bike, like serial numbers and its appearance, then adding extra information, like insurance, for quick access for police. If your bike is stolen, “Project 529” has an alert feature that sends out no-
tifications to other users in the area and on the network, the police and insurance companies. The app is free to register online and download the app for iOS and Android. “Project 529” merchandise and other helpful tools are also available at some bicycle and sports shops.
Flipp
The eternal struggle of college students – behind actually paying for college – is the battle to obtain food regularly on a limited budget. While there are many apps that exist that can give good deals to special places, like Groupon, students might prefer something more regular and practical. Enter “Flipp,” a way to save money on groceries and food on a consistent basis. Though “Flipp” may not offer coupons for a fancy dinner and brunch, “Flipp” does provide quick and easy access to the kind of coupons and deals that are usually found in newspapers or flyers. For a college student on a budget, the ability to quickly find deals on groceries without having to clip coupons from a stack of papers can prove useful and more cost effective than going out to eat so much. “Flipp” is especially practical in that it caters to stores and shops in your local area, saving time and gas. “Flipp” is free to download on iOS and Google Play.

Eventbrite
As any student knows, college is not all about what is happening on campus. The college life is also about what’s happening around and off campus. “Eventbrite” is an app that allows people to easily find events, local and otherwise, and buy tickets easily. On the other end of the spectrum, “Eventbrite” also allows event organizers to easily set up, promote and manage attendees from the very same app. Interested in attending a local concert or festival? “Eventbrite” easily allows you to share your interest via Facebook and Twitter, and then coordinate with any friends that might also wish to attend. This can all be done from a smartphone, including admission to the event itself as the phone can be used to check-in or acquire a Wi-Fi enabled wristband. If you are organizing an event, such as a club event or band gig, “Eventbrite” can use a phone’s camera to validate tickets and the app offers a way to track attendance stats and sales. “Eventbrite” is free on iOS and Android. Purchasing tickets through “Eventbrite” are obviously not free.

QUEER COLUMN ODU IS A SELFISH CAMPUS Why it’s Good and Bad and
Why it Needs to Change Us Connor Norton Staff Writer We are selfish. It’s true. Human beings are generally a selfish species. Think about it, when was the last time you did something that didn’t have something in it for you? Rescheduling a meeting so you could sleep longer, canceling on a friend to go to an event with a celebrity, even offering to donate your meal swipes to someone so you get to walk away with that good “I helped them” feeling inside. We’re a selfish race, and before we can go on you need to accept that fact first. ODU’s campus community is selfish. It’s true. Think about it, every action and stance the university says has to be in the betterment of its image. Every good that is done, every bit of ‘diversity and inclusivity’ that comes our way is still done to the betterment of ODU’s image. But that I understand, that’s business and politics. Ironically, it’s the students this statement is more directed at… yeah….YOU.
We are selfish students, we don’t do anything for the sake of change unless it’s going to serve us directly. And the worst part is, we get so consumed in that fire that we use it as a shield of ignorance to help blind us to the even further marginalized groups that we don’t even see. We look at the movements on our campus since Black Lives Matter, we see the passion and fight, the drive to better the community as a whole for black students… those people are selfish. I say it again because I want you to get it out of your head that selfish is a 100 percent bad thing. Those activists have culminated great power and attention to this campus in stating that black lives will unite and be powerful and heard. But what about the Queer People of Color? Yeah, gotcha there didn’t I? When we become so focus-minded we forget the minorities within the minorities. These past few weeks there were two days of solidarity that were launched on ODU’s campus to support marginalized communities.
The key difference? One you heard and cared about, the other one you didn’t. The week after ODU “stood in solidarity” with Mizzou was also the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day dedicated to remembering trans* men and women who were lost to acts of violence. A day to remember a majority of trans* women of color, including Lamia Beard who was murdered right here in Norfolk. Were those same voices at that day of remembrance? Were the voices and people who stood in solidarity standing for their Queer brothers and sisters as well? No. Now, you may think I’m being harsh, but “come on, how many people know about the Transgender Day of Remembrance? You can’t really expect anyone to know about that day and observe it when it’s not their thing,” and I’ll stop you right there… I expect everyone to recognize it when a university says that diversity and inclusivity is “their thing.” To be a social justice advocate is to take a pledge to have your heart in
every community, listening to every voice that is not heard, and to deny even one of them is to be selfish to a fault. We as humans are allowed to be selfish; you know how I said it’s all part of human nature? To be a true advocate for social justice and inclusivity you have to fight that selfishness, you have to acknowledge it and repel it every single day. To be an ally is a verb, it’s easy to say you believe in something and stand with a community you belong to; it’s an action to push yourself to think and consider all communities that are not yours, or that are within yours that you don’t normally advocate for. This is the core of the issue our campus has: when we want to talk about the issues of ‘Diversity and Inclusivity,’ it’s that we want to accept or imply acceptance without doing anything about it. We think it’s enough to say nothing, and only address it when the issue is brought to us directly. For example, Transgender students and their needs have never been publicly or directly addressed at this institu-
tion so who does the responsibility fall to? A selfish person would say “they should fight their own fight.” A true agent of change and social justice would be sending an email or addressing someone right now. The simple fact is just because you don’t see a community represented, doesn’t mean they aren’t there, in fact it means they are in even more need of help and your voice than you think. They sit back, they see the wonderful movements being made on this campus for black students, and some who may be of color themselves join the fight, silently hoping that the brothers and sisters next to them will stand up when they need them to. The question is when, when do you tell a community that has had to fight so long and hard to be acknowledged when their time is? The day that a Queer, Black, or Disabled student doesn’t have to be ‘expected’ to lead the fight for their own equity on campus is the day we can say this campus isn’t selfish anymore.
The Media and Its Portrayal of Crime Dr. Brian Payne Vice Provost, Old Dominion University As a criminologist at Old Dominion University, I have spent the past 25 years studying crime – its patterns, consequences, and causes. With other criminologists, we study this topic in order to identify potential strategies to prevent crime. One misconception that arises is the belief that crime can be attributed to a specific cause or a specific location. In our introductory criminology classes, we teach our students that crime varies across time and space,
but it’s not time and space that leads to those offenses – it’s the behavioral context of individuals within specific time periods and locations. This explains why crime increases in certain areas during summer months. The tendency to attribute crimes simply to a location is misleading. Anytime a crime occurs within a mile of ODU, the media seems to report that the crime occurred “near ODU.” This suggests crime can be attributed to ODU. In reality, the crimes typically have nothing to do with ODU. It’s natural to ask why we attribute the offenses to ODU. Why don’t we say the crime occurred “near
Ghent,“ “near the 38th St. Post Office” or “near Fellini’s?” Obviously, the media doesn’t say this because those locations have nothing to do with the criminal behavior of individuals near the locations. Attributing crime to a specific location – whether implicitly or directly – is harmful for four reasons. First, it inappropriately deflects blame from offenders. Second, this deflection of blame makes true prevention strategies elusive. Third, attributing crime to specific locations masks true problems confronting disadvantaged neighborhoods. Fourth, the deflection of blame creates a false sense of
security for those who are in other locations where crime also occurs. Having read so many headlines that indicate crimes occurred “near ODU,” I was curious how many crimes occurred “near” other locations. Using the city’s CrimeView mapping tool, I compared the amount of crime within a half-mile of my office at ODU and a half-mile from 150 W. Brambleton Ave. – which is the address of the Virginian Pilot. I found that more than twice as many crimes were reported “near” the latter address. Yet, I have never seen a headline that states, “Crime occurred near the Virginian Pilot!”
Obviously, it would make no sense to attribute the presence of crime to the Pilot. It also makes no sense to attribute crimes to ODU when those crimes had nothing to do with ODU other than the fact that they occurred in a nearby zip code. In order to truly address crime and violence in Norfolk, we must appropriately identify the causes of violence and address those issues as a community. Doing anything less is a disservice to all of us.

Ingredient Substitution Leads to Hard Times George Plank Staff Writer
With the holiday season just around the corner many have their eyes set on the mountain of food that will be consumed during the upcoming weeks. For many, Betty Crocker is just as welcome in the kitchen as a mother or a well-meaning aunt. The brand was created by General Mills to answer questions that customers had about recipes and concerns about their cooking style. Recent developments, however, have consumers asking questions of an entirely different
nature. Linda Hicks, from Atlanta, Georgia, was hosting a small get together last Thursday and wanted to make something special for her friends who had come to visit. “I thought I knew what I was getting myself into when I picked up that box of brownie mix from the Dollar General,” Ms. Hicks said. “When I got home and began to put everything together I did think, for a brief moment, that the substitution suggestion was a bit odd. I’m no Betty Crocker, so I went through with it anyway.” What struck Ms. Hicks as odd was

the fact that as a possible sugar substitute, Viagra was listed on the box. Due in part to a typographical error that occurred in upper management all boxes that came out of General Mills’ distribution center in Social Circle, Georgia all bore this error on the box. “It was unfortunate that Aldman Jenkins, our 40-year-old next door neighbor was the first to sample the brownies. On the other hand, Mrs. Jenkins never looked so pleased. Some of my friends were mortified and others requested plastic bags with which to take some home for
later. All in all not the worst party I’ve ever had. Certainly much better than the ipecac smoothie debacle of 2012,” Hicks said. This incident has unfortunately brought a fair amount of negative press for Betty Crocker and General Mills. Kendall J. Powell, chairman of the board and CEO of General Mills has apologized on numerous occasions for this incident. “We here at General Mills deeply regret this oversight and we will instill a firmer quality control standard with harder crackdowns against any infractions in the future,” Powell said.
It would seem that Mr. Powell had apologized too soon. Four hours after the news broke Nestle Toll House announced their partnership with Cialis, Pillsbury has a partnership with Levitra, and Hydrox will be working with Extenze. The Betty Crocker incident has opened up the American market to an entirely new segment of products and more and more companies are trying to get in on the action. The new niche market for erectile dysfunction confectionery has become turgid and has given General Mills some stiff competition.
