Breastival & Fun Walk Alyssa Branch Contributing Writer
On Oct. 27, the 9th annual ODU Breastival and Fun Walk raised awareness for the various kinds of breast cancer and helped raise money for the Susan G. Komen foundation to fund the research to prevent and cure breast cancer. Registration for the walk began at 12 p.m. and the first 250 people to register received a free T-shirt. After signing up for the walk people received a passport, which allowed them to move around from different tables to learn about breast cancer and awareness. After visiting a certain amount of tables they were able to participate in the walk and get free food and goodies. The tables were all about promotion of health and breast cancer awareness. The Student Nurses Association was promoting awareness for breast cancer in men and also held a silent auction. They had an intriguing chart

showing the types of breast cancer in men, interesting statistics and a guide to give a self breast exam. SNA even provided modules for the students to learn the techniques of a breast exam. Other SNA volunteers helped with giving out the mini pink cupcakes and the pink lemonade. The Campus Nutritionist promoted healthy eating on campus and provided samples and recipes for students to try. ODU’s Health Promotion offered “the wellness wheel” which allowed students to learn about health and to win free prizes. Susan G. Komen’s table had the Executive Director, Sharon Laderberg, discussing upcoming events, the importance of awareness and how to help. The foundation is advocating for “more than pink” which encourages people to take action, donate and get involved. In the Tidewater service area, 29 women a week will be diagnosed with breast cancer – of which 4.7 percent will die. “We don’t know why these

statistics are so high but we are on a task force to find out why” said Laderberg. Susan G. Komen is dedicated to meeting the needs in our community and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer. The ODU Breastival also held a bra decorating contest. There were three entries and people could donate a dollar or more to vote for their favorite. The first bra was decorated as Hershey kisses, the second was covered in hearts and the third had flowers and awareness ribbons that said “Hope, Fight, Love.” The entries from last year’s contest were also presented. Despite October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Susan G. Komen works all throughout the year to bring awareness and to find a cure. There are many upcoming events in the next few months – such as, the Treasure Chest Fest, Holiday Party, Fashion Show, Cornhole for the Cure, etc. All events and dates can be found on Susan G. Komen’s website.

NEWS Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer The signs of death are instantly recognizable. The senses of an individual, once having been in contact with the smell, sight and even sound of the death rattle, will never be able to forget this bombardment of sensory perception. In the year 1855, the vast majority of the citizens of Hampton Roads became well versed in the recognition of death and its horrible effects on the region. Entire households, extended families, neighborhoods and communities were torn asunder by the mysterious disease that ravaged the nervous system and liver of its victim, leaving the infirmed dying in agony after vomiting black bile. As this epidemic carved a swath through Hampton Roads and local cemeteries filled to capacity, there

Death at your Door: The 1855 Yellow Fever Epidemic was no recourse but to utilize mass graves for the thousands who died. The location of many of these mass graves have been lost to time and have possibly been constructed over as the region expanded. The day was June 7, 1855, and the USS Benjamin Franklin anchored off the shore of Norfolk Naval Station, awaiting inspection for entry into the shipyard. The vessel was in need of repairs after a voyage to the West Indies. However, the usual trade goods were not the only thing stowed away within its hold. As per federal regulation, any vessel entering the port after an extended voyage overseas was subject to inspection. Before the inspector could board the vessel, the crew of the Benjamin Franklin made a desperate effort to conceal the deadly truth. As corpses of the crew were secretly ferried to Portsmouth
for burial under the cover of darkness, jaundiced bodies began to wash ashore, and members of the crew began to risk drowning in a desperate attempt to escape the Franklin, and for the 16,000 residents that called this region home, death had arrived. The plague started slowly but soon began to move swiftly in the communities of Norfolk and Portsmouth. In less than five weeks the death toll reached approximately 60 victims. The dreaded disease would soon spiral out of control from a localized outbreak in the local port communities and quickly spreading to a regional disaster, that by the end of August 1855, the death toll had reached a staggering 630 victims. The citizens of Norfolk and Portsmouth were now faced with the harsh reality of humanity’s worst nightmare, a plague with no cure. As people began to barricade
themselves in their homes, businesses closed, streets emptied, and cemeteries filled; the residents would soon discover that there would be no escape from death. By Sept. 12, 1855, approximately 1,800 residents had died at the hands of this plague. Entire streets have now been abandoned and packs of feral dogs, once house pets, roamed the desolate streets scavenging for food. Parents and children watched helplessly as their loved ones agonized through the coils of this disease and slowly perished in front of them. Local women, many newly widowed, and volunteers from around the nation journeyed to the region and formed a coalition of local nurses, doctors, and priests to comfort the victims. However, this did not stem the flow of this disease and by Sept. 27 the dead numbered 2,250.
As the winter of 1855 settled over the region and the first frost arrived, a respite from the plague was experienced by the region. Local residents soon discovered that the cause of the disease was spread by mosquitos, and with the winter frost the mosquito population dwindled, along with it the Yellow Fever. By the end of 1855, the plague had eventually run its course, leaving an approximate 3,200 residents dead in its wake. Evidence of this epidemic remains in the thousands of local cemetery gravestones with the year 1855 etched on its surface. The system of unmarked mass graves was utilized to accommodate the vast number of dead. The location of two of these enormous mass graves are at the Yellow Fever Park in Ghent and a vacant lot at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Hampton Boulevard.
ODU Women's Center Celebrates 40th Anniversary Kamaria Mason Contributing Writer Shimmering glasses accompanied by perfectly manicured first courses rested atop beautifully decorated tables. Ladies and gentlemen dressed in elegant attire gazed around in amazement as they found their seats and began conversations with fellow event attendees. This was an elegant affair indeed, but the purpose of this classy engagement was in celebration of the Women’s Center’s 40th year anniversary. Any given day a student comes in contact with an event flyer or representative from the Women’s Center. However many are unaware of how impactful the center has been to the student body at ODU. Established in 1972 by the first director Carole Stoltz, the center has grown exponentially in influence since its days
on Taken Row in the early '90s. Stoltz established this organization in hopes of encouraging women to find success in higher education while attending a predominately male institution. Pursuing a higher education can be a daunting task even in the most prepared circumstances. When you add in the aspects of relationships, balancing families, tragic life events and lack of support it can seem almost impossible. Carole understood this and made it her duty to create a safe and supportive environment that encouraged women to reach for their dreams. Women who take the leap to further their education can often be bombarded by other factors that can impact their journey in achieving a higher education. The Women’s Center is an ever evolving community adding new initiatives each time they see issues
in need of care. Their mission to serve and nurture the women student body led to several outreach programs and partnerships, some of which include M-Power, which provides peer counseling to students impacted by different forms of violence. Another is the Women's Institute for Leadership Development, an association that provides potential networking opportunities for women. Although the Women’s Center was designed originally to uplift women, it supports ODU’s overall mission of inclusion in unity. It does so by supporting initiatives like Green Dot, Red Flags, Man of Quality Institute and partnerships with the local LGBTQ+ community as well as many other programs. The Women’s Center's motto reads, “The Women’s Center offers programs and services designed to promote gender equity and address
the unique challenges and opportunities female students encounter in the pursuit of higher education. Recognizing the critical role that both women and men play in promoting a safe environment free of gender bias, Center programs are designed to educate and inspire all students to achieve their personal, academic, and professional potential.” They have stood by those values for the past 40 years. As the room full of ODU students, alumni and commu-

It was evident that the spirit of empowerment and advancement that helped so many students in the past is still alive and well. This year celebrated 40 years of greatness, and the Women’s Center shows no indication of slowing down in their mission to improve the ODU student body in every way possible.

President's Lecture Series:
Erin Sudek Staff Writer Walter Robinson, current editor at large of the Boston Globe, came to ODU on Oct. 27 to speak about the importance of journalism and investigative reporting today and his experiences in the journalism field. About 300 people attended the speech that was held in the Big Blue room of the Ted Constant Convocation Center. It began with commentary from Robinson followed by an interview session that included questions from the audience. Robinson addressed the negative connotation that journalism has acquired, mostly because of political disagreements and attacks on the media’s reliability. Serious journalism has “cratered” across the country in recent years because of this reputation, and has even been listed as one of the least desirable jobs, according to Robinson.
Walter Robinson
“There is only a trickle of coverage on important issues these days,” Robinson said, confronting the necessity of investigative reporting in order to uncover corruption and keep government and other powerful institutions in check. However, with the diminishment of newspapers and reporters, journalists can no longer fulfill the “watch dog role” that the public expects. “Editors today seem to think investigative reporting is a luxury their newspapers cannot afford, when in fact it is a necessity we cannot afford to live without,” Robinson said. Nonetheless, Robinson is hopeful for a bright future for journalists. He believes the fix is in good, solid information, which is more important now than ever because of the surplus of information on the internet. Good information is power because people will pay for it, which is exactly what the journalism field is lacking: revenue.
He believes that “good journalists” and partnerships with new non-profit investigative reporting organizations, like ProPublica which focuses on important stories with “moral force,” are the future of news reporting and democracy. Without them, government and other iconic institutions, for example the Roman Catholic Church, could not be held accountable for their actions. Robinson was the editor for the Spotlight Team of the Boston Globe for seven years, and led the Roman Catholic Church investigation that is depicted in the movie ‘Spotlight’ in 2015. The movie was about the systematic cover-up of child-molestation within the Catholic Archdiocese and how the Spotlight Team uncovered this potentially world-wide scandal. Robinson, who was played by actor Michael Keaton, said the movie was faithful to the true events of the investigation. He presumes that ‘Spot-
A Child of NATO: Petra Marie Szonyegi Courtesy social media Erin Sudek Staff Writer Petra Marie Szonyegi is a trilingual International Relations and Political Science double major student at ODU. She was born in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, but has spent a majority of her life moving around. She has been in America for about nine years, while seven of these years were spent in Hampton Roads. She graduated from Princess Anne High School with an International Baccalaureate Diploma and is currently seeking her bachelor’s degree. Her father has worked for NATO since she was only six years old as an international military officer and she sees him as her role model. He started his Ph.D at ODU in the graduate program in international studies and she hopes to follow in his footsteps. She has been attending Model United Nations conferences since she was a junior in high school. Her life consisted of a lot of traveling and moving around, which allowed her to
experience a lot in her young life. She feels that the experiences she has had while traveling connect really well to her majors. She is involved with many campus organizations and departments. She was a speaker at the dedication of the Kate and John R. Broderick Dining Hall on Sept. 23 where she spoke highly of our ODU President Broderick for all of his hard work in making the university as extraordinary as it is today . She spends most of her time at The Model United Nations. She was mentored through the “Emerging Monarchs” program under the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement. She was the Public Relations Officer for Model UN and has worked her way up to Presidential status. Szonyegi is also a communications chair on the alternative breaks executive board. Her job consists of planning out and setting up the three teams and destinations of this year’s alt. breaks program. Her goals include obtaining a Master’s Degree and a Ph.D in higher education while working as a graduate assistant. She is planning to complete here Master’s degree here at ODU next school year. She hopes to
someday work as a higher education professional for a growing institutionwith values similar to that of ODU. ODU has really impacted Szonyegi positively. When asked if she would do it all over again she responded with “I would do everything exactly the way I did. I had an incredible time here these past few years and I am very thankful for it.” She hopes that her younger brother, Mark, who is currently back home in Hungary, also studies at ODU and plays for our basketball team someday. “ Get involved on campus! It will 100% enhance your learning experience outside the classroom. It improve your social, academic and professional life and it will give you essential skills that you will have to use in the future to build up a successful career,” Szonyegi says about being involved on campus. The mentors she has had while at ODU have helped her realize what motivates her and what direction she wants to take in her professional life. She feels very thankful and lucky to be a part of ODU’s diverse, successful and inclusive student body.

light’ will be a motivating movie for young journalists that it depicts the career as rewarding and essential to our society. “We do no favors to the iconic and beloved institutions in our communities by not putting them under the same scrutiny as we do to political institutions,” Robinson said, who’s team received much backlash for challenging the Catholic Church. Robison also commented on the presidential election and its controversial media coverage, highlighting the fact that public mistrust of news is at an all time high. He blames this on the fact that most Americans get all or most of their news from television, which he believes does not cover real news at all. “They argue about it, talk about it, share their opinions about it, but they don’t actually cover important news,” Robinson said. He talked about the importance of finding a way to differentiate between
reliable and unreliable news sources as a way of portraying the image of the media as a useful tool for citizens. Robinson has been a reporter and editor for 34 years and received the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for the Spotlight Team’s Catholic Church investigation. He previously worked as a political reporter, covering two presidential administrations and four presidential elections, along with being the Middle East Bureau Chief during the Persian Gulf War. He taught journalism courses parttime at Boston College High School and Northeastern University for two years before returning to local journalism, which he says is where the most important work is done. He continues to encourage journalism students to be better journalists and provide the investigative stories that our society needs in order to flourish.
This Week in History
Justin L.C. Ross Contributing Writer
For those who have ventured into shopping centers within the past few weeks, one cannot help but notice that the shelves are beginning to fill with Christmas items. However, as mentioned in the previous column, both history and time are continually unfolding. This progression, as much as we would like to, cannot be stopped. However, the history of the individual can be chosen by the person in that moment in time. With that being said, the choices that are made and the actions decided upon are up to the individual, so make it count. Wednesday November, 2 1976 The 39th President of the United States, James Earl “Jimmy” Carter is elected. Thursday November 3, 1507 The master artist and amazing renaissance figure Leonardo Da Vinci, is commissioned to paint his future masterpiece the Mona Lisa.
Friday November 4, 1952 Former Supreme Allied Commander during WWII, General Dwight D. Eisenhower is elected 34th President of the United States. Saturday November 5, 1872 Famous suffragette and civil rights activist, Susan B. Anthony is arrested for attempting to vote. Sunday November 6, 1923 As the Great Depression ravages the young Weimar German Republic, inflation soars to new heights as the price of one loaf of bread in Berlin reaches 150 million German Marks. Monday November 7, 1944 In an unprecedented moment in American Electorate history, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected to his fourth term. Tuesday November 8, 1889 The state of Montana is admitted into the Union as the 41st State. Huey Supreme Follows His Dream
Huey Supreme performed for the first time in his life at an open mic night in the Webb Center. Overwhelmed with excitement and nervousness, he made his way on stage. Once on stage, his mind went completely blank, and he couldn’t remember any of the words to his song. People in the crowd began cheering him on, which only made things worse for him. He walked off the stage and went home in hopes that everyone would just forget about his performance. Huey Supreme, legally known as Jesse Boone, is a well-known artist at ODU. He is not a typical rapper. The 21-year-old avoids the mainstream approach of rapping about girls, money and drugs. Instead, his music reflects his wisdom, rapping about experiences his audience can relate to. The up-and-coming artist’s soulful and groovy sound and distinct voice set him apart from his contemporaries. Huey steers away from cursing in his songs. He feels vulgar language will cause listeners to steer away from the deeper meaning of his messages. “I want your parents, grandpar-
ents, everybody to be able to listen,” Huey said. The rapper knows what he says is a direct reflection of who he is. When discussing the content of his music, he said that he wants to be the type of artist that people can turn to for guidance. Huey's song “City We From” is a great example of how he encourages a positive message through his music. This is highlighted by the lyrics, “I see you grinding dog / I swear that we gon’ see the top / That silver lining is perfect timing cause you stay away from them cop cars and that block dog / They can’t call your momma / keep Jesus armor proper.” Music is Huey’s passion. Despite being a full-time student and having a job, he spends his free time vigorously improving his craft. He describes his love for music as a “burning desire in his heart.” The artist’s upbringing molded

formed a bond that will last forever. Although Huey was initially anxious about performing, he realized that he wouldn’t be able to become the artist he wanted to be if he didn’t overcome his stage fright. One particular moment that helped him overcome his anxiety was meeting and having a short conversation with Mac Miller at a local show. Hearing Mac Miller say that he “threw up before every show for a year” gave Huey reassurance. It reminded him that stage fright is normal and only temporary. Huey’s next show at Shaka’s was successful and became a turning point for his music career. He improved his energy and confidence, allowing for an overall amazing performance. After that, he had a total of five shows that month — all successful. Huey Supreme’s fanbase continues to rapidly grow as he continues to perform and release new content. Social media has played a big role in his expansion as an artist. He’s humbled by how much progress he has made but will never be content. He plans to continue learning from the people around him and building his brand as a rapper.

Although Bohabs (fans) assembled for the alien lords of mayhem to deliver their music, the band brought the Intergalactic Wrestling Championship determining the next U.S. president. Manager Sleazy P. Martini was the ring announcer for the evening. The feature match pitted presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump against each other in a bloodbath. Clinton won, disemboweling her opponent for the ultimate finishing move. Although Clinton reigned supreme among the candidates, Gwar’s lead vocalist Blothar eventually took the championship after defeating arch-
nemesis Sawborg Destructo. Since this win also handed Blothar the title of president, Martini declared himself presidential advisor. The musical performance from Gwar was top notch, although the vocals were slightly askew due to the absence of founder and lead vocalist Oderus Urungus, whose human alter ego Dave Brockie passed away in 2014 from a heroin overdose. Though Blothar held his own replacing Oderus, it was not the same. Numerous cultural issues including war, homosexuality and xenophobia were covered through the songs and performances. Gwar is known for their taboo delivery of social issues and did not disappoint Thursday night. In his normal, horrible mood, guitarist Pustulus Maximus shared many
disgraceful sentiments too grotesque for sharing in this format. When asked how he was doing, he responded, “Terrible, terrible, terrible – I’ve survived yet another night,” explaining that they just emerged from the “sweltering armpit of North Carolina.” Discussing North Carolina brought up the issue of the state’s law discriminating against transgender individuals when it comes to bathroom use. This bill requires people to use the bathroom of the sex assigned at birth. Since Pustulus is from another planet, the question arose as to how Scumdogs identify sexually. “Sexuality in a Scumdog sense is far beyond human comprehension. We don’t identify as straight or gay, we just f--- everything – f--- everything over, f--- everything hard. So I don’t
see the whole point of labels. I think you humans make way too big of a deal about it.” Gwar’s manager revived the aliens from their long slumber by feeding them massive amounts of crack to save the universe years ago. Maximus said that although they are still fed their diet of crack, they seem to receive more weed nowadays. “All of a sudden I stopped getting fistfuls of crack and I started to get garbage bags of weed. Maybe because of legalization in certain states. It’s helping me ween off the crack.” The question of what equipment he prefers to disgrace as he makes a sorry attempt at playing guitar was asked. “That’s f----- up. I’m an amazing guitar player, I’m the most amazing guitar player that’s ever walked the face of this street. Marshall amplifiers are the
best amplifier, by far. I’m from space so my repertoire of equipment use is FAR surpassing anything that you’ve ever been able to play or even afford for that matter,” Maximus said. The band recently announced a Kickstarter campaign for their comic book series “Orgamageddon.” Maximus was asked why Bohabs should support it. “Well, it won’t suck because it’s got our branding on it ‘cause we’ve never made anything that sucks, right? Yeah, of course! Everything we do is great!" This interview was performed tongue-in-cheek as is everything Gwar does. Their appearance in Norfolk days ahead of Halloween and just under two weeks ahead of the presidential election set the cultural tone in a ludicrous and artistic manner.
Green Day Returns with 'Revolution Radio'
Lindsey Lanham Staff Writer
America has screwed up so bad this election cycle that Green Day had to come back with a new album. The ultimate redemption album, “Revolution Radio,” puts Green Day in the political spotlight we all like to see them in. It’s loud, it’s angry and it's definitely Green Day. Four years after the disappointment of “¡Uno!” “¡Dos!” and “¡Tré!” the band has proven that they’re not stuck in an era of short punk songs. They’ve gone back to an older sound reminiscent of “American Idiot.” 26 years after the release of their first studio album, “39/Smooth,” Green Day hasn’t calmed down. If anything, they’re angrier than ever. “Revolution Radio,” released
on Oct. 7, is the indignant punk rock album 2016 needs. Green Day is made up of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool. The success of “Nimrod,” released in 1997, made Green Day who they are today. Though they are no longer whiny teenagers, they’re still pissed off. They’ve matured into a band that everyone can respect in the rock world. Opening song “Somewhere Now” starts off with a simple acoustic guitar. It doesn’t take long for the loud electric guitar and harsh drum beats to start up. Soon, Armstrong is yelling, “I put the riot in patriot.” “Bang Bang” follows up “Somewhere Now.” It’s by far the fastest song on the album. It brings back the punk-rock anger that is typi-
cal Green Day. The track starts with what sounds like recordings of newscasters discussing various executions before it blows up into a rock song. Armstrong sings about how he wants to be a celebrity martyr and how he has a fever for violent behavior. With lyrics like “Daddy’s little pyscho and Mommy’s little soldier,” Armstrong has shown again how sarcastic the band truly is. Nothing is to be taken lightly. Title track “Revolution Radio” keeps up the theme of just plain being pissed off, but now includes the listener in it. The lines “We will be seen but not be heard / we are the songs of the disturbed” further develop the us-against-the-world theme. Other lines like “Give me cherry bombs and gasoline” makes it seem like Armstrong himself is
going to blow up the world. “Still Breathing” takes a break from the angry lyricism that Armstrong thrives on. Though the music is still fast and loud, the lyrics are more uplifting. The song is all about believing in yourself and coming back from your darkest place. Armstrong makes the song personal with lines like “I'm like a son that was raised without a father.” But he comes back to show that he’s still here, saying “'Cause I'm still breathing on my own / My head's above the rain and roses / Making my way away.” “Ordinary World” is the closing track on the album. It’s a simple acoustic song. The song is also featured on Armstrong’s new movie titled “Ordinary World.” “Ordinary World” may be the calmest

song featured, but that does not take anything away from the album as a whole. Armstrong croons lyrics like “Baby, I don't have much / But what we have is more than enough.” It’s about as romantic as Green Day gets, and with it’s mellowed down sound it gives a good closer to such a discordant album. “Revolution Radio” has brought back the Green Day sound that was well missed. They’ve still got eyeliner on and brightly-colored hair. Even with all of this, Green Day has matured into well thought out songs that can resonate with everyone. “Revolution Radio” has a specific sound that only Green Day can make work. It’s edgy, it’s catchy and it’s just plain good.

Rae Sremmurd Invades The NorVa
Fans were so excited waiting in line on Sunday night that they did not realize that Rae Sremmurd member Slim Jxmmi walked down the sidewalk past them. That was just the start of a supercharged night full of unexpected events. The active duo of brothers, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, made a stop at The NorVa for their Sremm Life 2 Tour in the wake of the release of their new album of the same title. Lil Yachty, the red-headed rapper known for his calm and high pitched tones, opened for the group. The diverse crowd was hyped, all prepared to sing his lyrics in melodic sync. The Atlanta breakout artist and XXL 2016 freshman grew notice from his viral single “One Night” from his mixtape “Lil Boat.” Since then, he has worked with many artists including Hampton Roads native D.R.A.M. The song “Broccoli” was one of anticipation for the night. Fans moved their shoulders
back in forth in accord to the catchy tune. In addition to other songs from “Lil Boat,” the 19-year-old performed the pleasantly repetitive song, “Minnesota.” He jumped about with energy as he sprayed the audience from an on-hand supply of water bottles. The Mississippi natives Rae Sremmurd arrived on the stage and opened with a bang to “Start a Party.” They were accompanied by bright visuals on a vivid larger than life glowing screen. The artists came with a strong energy and a presence loaded with intensity and just pure fun. Among many, they performed hit singles from their debut album “SremmLife” such as “No Type,” “Throw Sum Mo” and “Come Get Her.” The carefree rock stars brought members of their camp on stage, sipped on bottles of Hennessy and paraded around throwing and devouring whole pineapples. From their newly released album “SremmLife 2,” they performed a mix of relaxed and vibed songs like “Look Alive” and bangers like “Real Chill” which features Kodak Black. “Free Kodak”
was shouted among many including Rae Sremmurd themselves. They took a moment during their set to ask the crowd to throw anything on the stage, a practice they’re known to do themselves with many objects in the past like toilet paper and water. Fans took the request seriously. Bras were thrown among a variety of other objects, including actual shoes, and were displayed on screen as trophies. Rae Sremmurd’s stage presence was far from lacking. They provided fans a memorable experience with abrupt actions including climbing tall speakers and engaging with fans on the second level of the venue. A quick pause was made during the show to speak on the importance of voting in this year’s election, and specifically not for Donald Trump. Visuals appeared of the presidential candidate in devil horns and a raging fire behind him signifying the possible result of his election. Following their message, they jumped right back into the fun with a performance of their song “Up Like Trump” as the prominent visuals remained.
Get Wild With HBO's 'Westworld' Michael McCann Contributing Writer HBO’s new drama “Westworld” is a based on an amusement park set in the nineteenth-century American West. Guests who arrive at the park are greeted by realistic androids called hosts that replay the same scenarios day to day. Guests to the park are able to choose what scenarios they want to go on, with all the hedonistic, wild abandon they may choose to indulge in. The first host we meet is Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), a farmer’s daughter and one of the oldest hosts in the park. The opening scene shows her being diagnosed by the employees of the park for supposed aberrant behavior. She’s asked if she has ever questioned the reality of her world, which becomes a theme that is explored throughout the first few episodes. A daily life of a host starts with the same routine – they go about their day as planned until intervened by a guest. A host may not harm a guest, but if a guest decides to kill or maim the hosts, then the hosts are sent to the park’s repair area and are fixed for the next day. This is a daily cycle that changes with each guest interaction. Park operators continually find hosts that are acting outside of their
Courtesy static2.hypable.com predetermined roles in Westworld. Many of the hosts are experiencing traumatic nightmares of violent encounters with guests. In addition, there are storylines involving a mysterious man in black (Ed Harris) and the park’s creator, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins). The idea of hosts questioning their world is something that interests Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), the head of Westworld Programming Division. After the initial interview with Dolores, Bernard continues to have secret interviews with her. In these encounters, we see Dolores acquiescing to Bernard’s suggestions that the world may not be quite what she thinks it is. Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) plays a madam at the local brothel that has been suffering from glitches. In one episode, she is brought back to the repair area after a saloon fight to have bullets removed from her body. A technician forgets to shut her down properly and she escapes to find hordes of bodies of townspeople being hosed down.
Maeve also has haunting dreams about her and her daughter being slaughtered by a local tribe. The reality of hosts having these dreams makes the audience wonder about the humanity they possess. The hosts have personal connections and reoccurring nightmares, even though they are supposed to awaken with a clean slate each morning. The problems of the park run parallel with many subplots on the show. One of which is a pair of men, Logan and William, who arrive as guests to the park. William is a reluctant first timer, while Logan is a returning guest. On his first venture through the town, William crosses paths with Dolores. This interaction along with others lead William to believe the park has a deeper meaning, while Logan continues to take part in the more risqué perks. William sees humanity in the eyes of Dolores rather than just another host. “Westworld” has an outstanding cast matched with an interesting premise and gorgeous scenery. It’s the television equivalent of an open world video game. The show recently became the biggest premiere of an HBO drama since "True Detective," so rest assured that it will be here for some time to come.

To close the night, the brothers performed one of their most successful and anticipated songs, “Black Beatles.” The crowd jumped and swayed as they sang the words over and over. They pulled the cliché “we’re done and it’s over” routine, and then immediately turned around and hit the audience with a performance of
the song “Do Yoga” to officially end the night. While all types of jewelry and other objects plastered the floor from jumping, dancing and head banging, the night proved to be successful as concert-goers left with smiles on their faces.
MONARCH STYLE The Best Fall Beauty Must-Haves Kim Bering Staff Writer Beauty reaches its peak in the fall. A splash of berry lipstick with a golden smoky eye looks great with any outfit. Every beauty enthusiast needs a handful of new products for fall. There are proper products that will ensure lasting flawless makeup. The first thing to have for your fall makeup collection is a classic berry-colored lipstick. It can immediately upgrade an outfit’s overall appearance. Applying a dash of a pigmented statement, lipstick can completely change the simplicity of any outfit, instantly making plain apparel chic. Berry lipstick is perfect for fall and the rest of winter, too. One of the best brands that provides several berry shades is by Bite Beauty. These organic lipsticks are made with 12 edible oils and vitamins. The Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick collection also features 34 different shades if the berry color doesn’t suit you. The creamy texture of these lipsticks are highly pigmented, provide hydration and long-lasting wear. The next essential fall beauty product is a bronzer. This product helps to accentuate the structure of the face. It adds some warmth to counteract the fading summer tan, too. Bronzer is meant to be delicately used on the cheekbones, near the hairline and along the jawbone. Any area of the face that shadows in direct light should be bronzed. There are multiple bronzing products to choose from. They can be matte, shimmery, liquid or compacted into a powder. The powder bronzers from Too Faced offer a wide variety of colors and textures. and dramatic berry lipstick compliment perfectly with warm-colored eye shadows. A light matte brown in the crease, a dark crimson wine color for the corner and a metallic gold on the lid is the essential eye look for fall. Warm-toned shadows with a shimmery color on the lid dramatically enhances the quality of the look. The best way to shop for eyeshadow is to buy eye shadow palettes. The Morphe 35F Fall Into Frost Palette has seven mattes and 28 metallic shadows – and it only costs $22.99! That’s 28 highly pigmented eyeshadows for less than half the price of most quality palettes. This product is a must have for the fall beauty collection. The fleekin’ brow trend has not ended either. There’s no better way to make a statement than with carved eyebrows. Having a brow pencil or pomade will give you the variety to sculpt your brows however you please. But if you prefer the natural brow look, having a tinted gel will add a little emphasis to them without being too dramatic. The best brand for eyebrow products is Anastasia Beverly Hills. This brand offers pencils, gels, powders, pomades, pens and the tools to get the perfect brows. The most popular product is the Brow Wiz. It is a retractable pencil with a spool at the opposite end to blend the pigment of the pencil. It can look dramatic or natural depending on your personal preference. These handful of products are essential items for achieving fall beauty perfection, but the best thing about makeup is the personal creativity. Everyone does their makeup in a different way, so these products can be used sparingly or simultaneously. Whether it’s a full face of makeup or just a dash of mascara, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Jimmy Eat World ‘Integrity Blues’
Courtesy of jimmyeatworld.com
On what is possibly their best record since “Bleed American,” Jimmy Eat World have matured with “Integrity Blues.” No longer the self-conscious, broody, emo-type, Jimmy Eat World have successfully reestablished themselves as an adult rock band. After a brief hiatus, lead singer, Jim Adkins, released an open letter announcing the release date of Jimmy Eat World’s ninth album. The letter was insecure and detailed the struggles of facing one’s true self. Adkins wrote that the new album would tackle all issues of battling one’s inner demons. Released on Oct. 21, “Integrity Blues” has hit all of the things Jim-
my Eat World strived for it to. It’s a different sound from the insecure, repetitive noise of “Invented.” It’s got a solid rock foundation. While it still has more of the teenage angst that makes them relatable, the album has shown a maturity Jimmy Eat World hasn’t hit before. Songs like “Sure and Certain” and “Through”9 keep with the classic Jimmy Eat World rock sound. Lyrics like “Look around, that’s not me / Not one shred of who I’ll be / You don’t know what I’d do,” make the sound reassuring. Rather than asking for pity, the band is telling the listener how they see themselves. “Pass the Baby” takes a unique
twist. The song is more of an electropop sound. While Adkins voice whispers the opening lines, “The best decision made / Was let me take the stage / Do what I say exactly / Remember you called me,” the lyrics show a confident side of the band that isn’t all too common coming from them. Opening track, “You With Me,” resonates well with the classic Passion Pit sound while still remaining inherently Jimmy Eat World. Lyrics like, “Fear and comfort / Are both one the same / Am I weak if I want to wait?” show the insecurities that Adkins faces.
Tove Lo
‘Lady Wood'
Swedish singer Tove Lo is back with “Lady Wood.” Two years after the release of “Queen of the Clouds,” Lo proves that she is going nowhere. Tove Lo kisses monogamy goodbye, declaring that she doesn’t fancy pretty boys on “True Disaster.” Then she croons, “Yeah, you give me lady wood,” on title track “Lady Wood.” It’s bold and it’s undoubtedly Tove Lo. “Lady Wood,” released on Oct. 28, keeps the signature electropop sound that Lo established with “Queen of the Clouds.” Somehow, she’s managed to keep her core sound while still having two completely dif-
ferent albums. “Influence” kicks off the album. Lo declares she’s “fine as f---.” The track sets the tone, making it known from the start this album is about her, and nobody loves Tove Lo as much as Tove Lo. “Vibes” takes a completely different turn from the expected Tove Lo sound. It starts with a simple acoustic guitar but quickly turns into a strange mix of delicate backup vocals and an easy-going beat. As Joe Janiak’s unique voice goes on about not being the right type, Lo sings “Dreamer, trippin' on your highs / These vibes,
I feel ‘em.” Tracks like “Cool Girl” and “WTF Love Is” stick with the traditional Tove Lo sound. Both songs keeping up the theme of independence. Lyrics like “Ice cold, I roll my eyes at you, boy / I’m a cool girl, I'm a, I'm a cool girl,” prove how little she cares about what others think of her and how fiercely self-reliant she is. It’s sardonic, confident and it’s badass. Tove Lo is here to prove to everyone she knows how to do edgy right.

The Mace & Crown
On the second album that Gucci Mane’s released since he’s gotten out of prison, he explores a more classic side of his music. It’s a sound that his listeners have come to know and love. Released on Oct. 14, “Woptober” is more of a story-sharing album rather than a party anthem. It goes back to an angrier, in-your-face feeling that is comfortably Gucci Mane. “Woptober” holds nothing back as it starts off with “Intro: F--- 12.” It keeps a paranormal feel as phantom-like piano keys play as the base of the song. The opening line, “I still
don't give a f--- how a f---boy feel,” has already established the tone for the album and it’s only been 15 seconds. In songs like “Dirty Little N----,” Gucci Mane explores a story about a kid on the streets and takes a moment to empathize with the kid. “Y'all might don't feel him but I damn sure feel him / Cause I was just in a jail cell f----- up with him,” he says, making a point to make the track relatable. Other tracks like hit single “Bling Blaww Burr,” are more tuned for a club setting. And on “Love Her Body,” Gucci Mane can’t decide whether he
@maceandcrown
@maceandcrown
loves a woman or “am I in love with her body?” Each song having its own independent style while still being that brash sound that is Gucci Mane. “Out the Zoo” discusses Gucci Mane’s experience with drug dealing and prison. Lines like “Out the cage in a rage like I escaped out the zoo,” show just how he felt when he finally got a chance to be free again. Gucci Mane remains confident in himself and his music with the release of “Woptober.” It’s a solid album that any diehard Gucci Mane fan will appreciate.

‘The Fits’
2015 | Unrated | 72 min. In the eyes of a child, the idea of growing up can be a scary, uncontrollable and nightmarish experience. This experience is brilliantly embodied by newcomer Royalty Hightower in “The Fits.” Although the film is quiet and may appear merely as a standard coming of age movie, the film proves to have many ideas bubbling beneath the surface. Having spent most of her time in the boxing gym of the rec center that she and her brother frequent, Toni (Hightower) eventually begins
to stray away from the sport when she develops a fascination for dance. Although her tomboy reputation follows her to the dance troupe at the recreational center, Toni eventually begins to make friends and find her path as a dancer. When the other girls begin to experience a string of unexplainable seizure-like fits, Toni does everything in her power to avoid being the next one to suffer. As the phenomenon becomes more prevalent to the girls, they begin to see it as some sort of rite
of passage. Because of this, Toni is left with the dilemma of either fighting the fits or accepting it. First-time director Anna Rose Holmer does her material and themes justice by bringing in a very subtle horror element to her story. Accompanied by an eerie and alarming soundtrack along with imagery that will stick with the audience for days, “The Fits” is a film that demands attention and earns it every step of the way.

‘The Automatic Hate’ 2016 | Unrated | 100 min.
In a film about family and the demons that they pass down to one another, “The Automatic Hate” follows the character of Davis (Joseph Cross) who starts the film by meeting Alexis (Adelaide Clemens), a cousin he never knew he had. As he begins to investigate his family tree, Davis discovers that his father has hidden a long lost brother that he’s done everything to cut from his life. Curious about the abandoned part of his family, Davis ends up meeting more cousins and an uncle who is very reluctant to make amends with
his brother. As Davis and Alexis begin to uncover the dark reason for their fathers’ estrangement, they slowly begin to develop an unconventional friendship that might prove more dangerous than anticipated. For a movie like “Automatic Hate,” the mystery that follows the characters to an uncomfortable degree has to drive the story throughout. There has to be patience and timely development that eventually leads to some form of payoff for the audience. While the mystery itself is intriguing and unravels to a twisted conclusion that
satisfies audiences, the film seems only interested in the end product rather than the actual structure of the plot itself. Every clue that Davis and Alexis unearth comes so easily that it dampens the reveal that feels rushed. Still, there is so much going on with the characters and the themes of the film, it certainly serves as a darkly gripping tale of hereditary downfalls that doesn’t disappoint. This film is available on Netflix.

‘Amy’
2015 | R | 128 min. Winner of the 2015 Academy Award for best feature documentary, “Amy” recounts the life of troubled Grammy winner Amy Winehouse. Although everyone remembers the relentless tabloid updates of Winehouse and her alcohol addiction, filmmaker Asif Kapadia seeks to tell a more personal story that centers on the relationship between the artist and the fame that can taint the soul of the artist. Made up entirely of archive footage and layered with interviews from friends, relatives and collaborators, Kapadia takes his viewers on a jour-
ney of Amy Winehouse’s life. From her childhood in a broken home to her untimely death in 2011, “Amy” turns the singer from a fallen celebrity into a humanized figure that succumbed to the trials of fame. When reflecting on Winehouse’s time as a celebrity, people unfortunately only remember her as nothing more than an addict with messy relationship issues. Even if her music didn’t resonate with most, it was hard to deny Winehouse as a talented singer with deep and personal lyrics. Kapadia not only wants the viewer to appreciate this, but to also celebrate
a talent that was trumped by tragedy. What Kapadia also does to make “Amy” such a knock out is have his audience grow with Winehouse and become more personal with her. When she eventually does fall from grace and slowly kills herself, the audience has to watch someone they grew with and feel the same sting that her friends and family feel. As sad as “Amy” is, it is also a knock out portrait of celebrity and fame that isn’t afraid to pull its punches. This film is available on Amazon Prime.

Lady Monarchs take 2-0 loss to UNC in Final Game Matt O'Brien Staff Writer
In their final match of the season, the Old Dominion Field Hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels. The loss gave the Lady Monarchs a 7-10 mark to round out the season. It was a hard-fought match played in front of the home crowd. This was a match filled with emotion as it signaled the end of a great run for three seniors. “With the loss last night things were really emotional. Obviously, this was me Cait and Alyssa’s last day playing on this field. We came out and we left everything out there, we played our hearts out,” senior Meg Byas said. Byas finished her senior cam-
paign with four goals and two assists, including two game-winning goals on the season. “It’s really tough because I feel like we underachieved a bit this season. We had good players and good potential and we just had a couple games that just got away from us,” head coach Andrew Griffiths said. This was a game that Griffiths knew would be tough, but emphasized to play for the seniors and remind them how much they have meant to this program. “I wanted us to play for them. It’s disappointing for this ride to end a little early but I am

Sports Golden State Warriors Buy or Sell the Hype

With the new NBA season underway, many people expect the Golden State Warriors to run through the season in the same way that they did last year, en-route to a record-breaking 73 wins. In the first game of the season, they played the San Antonio Spurs. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had the perfect gameplan leading his team to 129-100 win. It's just one game out of the 82
in a season but shocking debut for the "Super Team." With Stephen Curry and a trio of Olympic Gold medalists Draymond Green, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, the team is the favorite to win it all. After last year self-imploding defeat, the Warriors are on a mission of redemption this year. After taking a three-to-one series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers they imploded. The Warriors were possessions away from a title but still decided to revamp their roster this off-
season. Kevin Durant was the biggest acquisitions, but veteran big men David West and Zaza Pachulia are just as important for the team's championship aspirations. Adding another superstar to the already star-heavy team has made them sure picks for the title this year. Curry, Thompson, Durant, Green and Pachulia are the Warriors starting five. With Curry and Thompson running as the dynamic duo, Durant is a freak of nature standing at 6’10 and can shoot the ball from
anywhere on the court. Green is a lockdown defender and a rebounding bully and can occasionally make you pay if you leave him open. With all these pieces to the puzzle are the Golden State Warriors really that good, though? Putting together socalled “Super Teams” has been a thing in the past couple of years in the NBA. The league has seen the big three in Boston with Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and LeBron James taking his talents to South Beach
with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and now the Golden State Warriors with their quartet of All-Stars. Although most analysts see the Warriors as a shoe-in to win the title, this season won't be easy. Teams like this take time adjusting to each other on and off the court, and that's what they'll try to do through the 82 game grind of the regular season.
NFL Mishandles Domestic Violence Case Kevin Washington Contributing Writer
New York Giants Kicker Josh Brown has come forward and admitted in detailed documents about how he physically abused his wife. However, the NFL always shies away from making a decision until they have all the details, or the information is released to the public. Brown wrote in his journal, "I have abused my wife." Just look back at the Ray Rice fiasco and how poorly the NFL
handled the press. The deciding factor, in Rice's case, was the video that was released by TMZ, but the NFL had already suspended him similar to how they did Brown. Brown was suspended the first week of the NFL season due to a pending investigation but continued to play until week six. But the bigger factors are at play here on the NFL part. How long did they know about the documents? Did the NFL overlook the documents? Or did they just make a call before
the real facts came into play? Molly Brown reported being abused by Josh Brown more than twenty times. In another journal entry, Brown wrote that he has been, "physically, mentally, emotionally and verbally been a repulsive man." Domestic violence is a huge problem in the U.S. and the NFL can't keep dropping the ball on these cases. The bigger questions at play here are on the NFL's part. How long did they know about the documents?
Did the NFL overlook the documents? Or did they just make a call before the real facts came into play? Molly told police that Josh had been physically violent with her more than twenty times in the past couple of years. When the NFL finally decides to take action in these cases, they seek to place the players on the Exempt List. The Exempt List punishment really isn't a punishment, but

more like a slap on the wrist. The stipulations are you may not attend games or practice but can do non-football activities with the team's permission. Athletes are still paid their salary. Brown has finally been placed on the list and his NFL career is most likely over. The NFL wonders why their ratings are dropping, but stories like this are a good indication.

The Day the Internet Went Down Audra Reigle Staff Writer
A number of popular websites were recently shut down as a result of being hacked. These attacks were done on Oct. 21, and they essentially shut down the internet for a brief period of time. Dyn DNS was the target of the attacks, according to Popular Science. They provide a service that allows you to get to the websites you want to view on your phone or computer. Normally, they have a low profile, but if the servers go down as a result of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, then access to popular internet sites is blocked. Some of the websites that went down as a result of the attack on Dyn DNS were Etsy, Grubhub, Netflix,
Pinterest, Reddit, Spotify and Twitter, according to Gizmodo. However, social media, shopping and media streaming services weren’t the only ones targeted by this attack. Several large news outlets, such as CNN and Fox News, were also targeted by the attack. It is possible that webcams played a role in the attacks. Products from a Chinese company called Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology are being recalled as a result of Friday’s attacks, according to PC World. The cameras being recalled were not the cause of the attacks, but a security issue on the cameras made them easy to hack. A statement from the company said the main issue was people not changing the passwords that came with the cameras. Websites have not been the only
TECH IN A SEC Microsoft VR Announced Microsoft announced their own line of virtual reality headsets on Oct. 26 at a Microsoft Windows 10 event. It appears to be set to compete against the Playstation VR because it will not require any external cameras or sensors to function, until the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. It will also be competitive at a relatively cheap price of $299. The Mi Mix Revealed Chinese electronics company Xiaomi revealed the Mi Mix smart phone in Beijing. The Mi Mix is a high-end smart device whose claim to fame is its bezel-less display, which allows the screen to be nearly the same size as the phone itself. This sleek-looking phone will only be available in China on Nov. 4. AT&T and Time Warner Merge For the hefty price of $85.4 billion, AT&T purchased Time Warner Inc. While AT&T believed that the giant telecommunications merger would go without FCC approval, Ars Technica was told by an FCC spokesperson that the merger would perform a public interest review, “just as the FCC has done with other major mergers.” When Comcast attempted to purchase Time Warner Cable, the FCC refused to approve based on the risks it posed to online video. Bethesda Limits Review Copies Video game publisher Bethesda Softworks announced their new policy to only release review copies of their games to outlets and critics one day prior to the release date. The policy has been with criticism due to its implication that consumers don’t need to see reviews of games before money is spent on buying them. target of recent hacking issues though. This election cycle has seen the hacking of email accounts run by members of the Democratic Party. John Podesta was recently targeted by a Russian hacking group called Fancy Bear, according to Forbes. His email was hacked as a result of a "spear-phishing" scam in which he clicked a link in an email that seemed legitimate but was not. The link took him to a page where he could change his password. When he put his new password into that site, he unknowingly gave the password to Fancy Bear, and they were able to get access to all of his emails. This brings cybersecurity into question. Avoiding emails that come off as scams is simple enough. Be aware of what you click on in emails, and if you feel like something is sus-

picious, you probably shouldn’t click on it without looking into it further. There’s still the issue of larger hacks like those that happened on Oct. 21 that brought down many websites on the internet. While the issue has been resolved for now, it is still possible for them to be brought down again. “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the situation,” according to U.S. News. There are also firms that offer protection from DDoS attacks so that websites can remain online during the
attack, according to Lance Cottrell, a chief scientist for Ntrepid. However, “monthly subscription fees for these services are generally equal to a typical DDoS extortion payment, giving companies little incentive to pay for them.” So the lesson to be learned from these events is an old one: maintain a password on all of your digital accounts and especially on Internetconnected devices.
Clinton and Trump: Cybersecurity and Climate Change Ross Reelachart Technology Editor As Election Day draws closer, the need to evaluate the presidential candidates’ stances on various issues grows in importance. While there remains little time to cover everything either candidate has said about every issue, we can at least attempt to investigate their stances on a few issues concerning the world of science and technology. To start with the most obvious issue: encryption and electronic security. On the eve of an election filled with hacking, accusations of hacking and rumors of electronic tampering; the issue of safeguarding both federal and private data is paramount. Hillary Clinton stands at the forefront of the issue, and not necessarily because of her spoken policies. While her official stance on encryption seems to be that there could be a middle ground between powerful encryption technologies and the ability for law enforcement to get past it, the concern surrounding her emails puts her conviction on the issue in question. Clinton has publicly supported the “Encryption Commision,” which would officially study and work towards finding a solution to the nuanced problem of digital encryption, of which Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) was an architect. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has also released a plan to address the issue of cybersecurity. The plan called for an “immediate review of all U.S.

cyber defenses and vulnerabilities, including critical infrastructure, by a cyber review team of individuals from the military, law enforcement, and the private sector.” While sounding comprehensive, the full plan itself is lacking in details or a plan of execution. Specifically, Trump’s plan focuses less on “cybersecurity” and more on “cyber warfare,” with little attention paid to the importance of individual citizen security or privacy. Such a stance is only further muddled by Trump attempting to fan the flames around Clinton’s email situation by asking Russia, the country that recent cyberattacks against the U.S. have originated from, to locate emails from Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state. But what about the environment and renewable energy? For years, climate change scientists and environmentalists have urged people and the government to move away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner renewable energy sources. In a year where the Earth had an 11-month streak of record hot months, it has become increasingly clear that climate change must be addressed. Clinton appears to side on the side of climate change evidence, and plans
@maceandcrown
to enact measures to study methods to counter it as well as find alternative energy sources. On Aug. 11, Clinton assembled an advisory team on climate change of more than 100 experts, according to Politico. On July 16, Clinton announced her official climate change policy and goals, which were to install more than 500 million solar panels across the country and generate enough renewable energy to power every home in 10 years. While far-fetched, this policy at least puts her on the proactive side of climate change. Trump, on the other hand, plays to his business roots and pledged to lift restrictions on American energy production in order to better tap into domestic sources of energy, namely coal and natural gas. While his reasons for lifting such restrictions would be to make the U.S. less dependent on foreign energy and bring jobs to communities, it’s difficult to say if he considers anything else in his plans. Trump has repeatedly swung between disbelieving climate change and “considering” it, and he frequently has been opposed to international environmental agreements like the Paris Climate Accord. When Nov. 8 rolls around and every citizen of the U.S. is called up to do their civic duty to vote, hopefully they will consider what the two main candidates have stated about the future scientific and technological growth of the U.S.

'PAPER MARIO: Color Splash' Is A Step in the Right Direction
Robert Younger Contributing Writer Mario is widely considered by many to be the quintessential video game character. Whether it’s in his traditional platformers or the myriad of spin-offs under his belt, Mario’s games have been played and loved by many. One of his most popular spin-offs is the Paper Mario series. The last few entries in the franchise had a lackluster presence, but with the recent release of “Paper Mario: Color Splash,” Nintendo has taken a step back towards the series’ glory days. Paper Mario games are typically RPGs that blend Mario’s platforming roots with some clever writing to

on. The downside is that these cards are disposable, meaning that once they are used they are gone. This results in many times where the player will be forced to halt their progress to restock their card deck. The game mitigates this somewhat with card drops, but towards the end of the game you can expect to be restocking your deck after every level. This leads into “Color Splash’s” other major problem: Boss Battles. Each boss features a gimmick in which you are required to use a specific card to beat them. Otherwise it is impossible and you will lose. However, you do not know what these cards are, where you will find them or when they will be useful. So you can
expect to be repeating a number of boss fights not because of your lack of skill or preparation, but because you failed to bring a single item the game never informed you about. All this said, “Color Splash” is thoroughly enjoyable for its humor alone. It cannot emphasized enough how charming this game is, and on a technical level it looks and sounds wonderful. However, the combat has the potential to be a major deal breaker. For most people, this is the sort of game you may wish to wait to go on sale, if not avoid entirely.
The ROBORanger: An Instant Response to Crime Ross Reelachart Technology Editor ROBOCOPP, a San Fransicobased company that released a personal alarm device last year, has announced their next product, the “ROBORanger.” As an upgrade to the original Sound Grenade alarm, the ROBORanger is “a revolutionary way to get professional emergency response in a dangerous situation.” Personal safety has been the core mission of ROBOCOPP since its inception. While ODU, the surrounding community and society at large have made great strides in ensuring safety, sometimes a personal safety devices is the preferred option for individuals. tion of anyone nearby with its piercing 130 decibel alarm, was a more effective danger prevention than a retaliatory method like pepper spray or a stun gun. ROBORanger ups the ante on its crime prevention philosophy by including a built-in security dispatch that activates alongside the alarm. When the pin is pulled on the device, an alarm sounds and an alert is sent to a security center that contacts local authorities, without the user needing to make a call or do anything else. The technology behind the instant alert is patent-pending and supposedly works “fail-proof against battery drainage or an out-of-range smartphone.” As a much-appreciated addition, the dispatch method also does not track the user, and the user’s location is secured and encrypted until the alarm is sounded.

later there was coffee in front of us. Her brown hair, curled and frizzy, tangled as she bobbed her head back and forth as if she was listening to music. I was slightly confused, but decided not to make a comment. My curiosity got the best of me: the walls were stacked with books, old books, new books, large books, and small books. They framed the windows that our booth was jammed against haphazardly. The genres splashed the universe from physics to art history to playbills. A boy flipped a switch on the spine of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and opened it to see a movie. A book a young girl was reading caught my eye: 250 Facts About Dragons, Pixies, and Warlocks. “Wait, facts?” The Writer followed my gaze to the book in question, “Yes. Facts. This is my universe. I am showing you how I see the world. Anything I can think up, can be created here. That’s why I’m The Writer. Look out there.” She had a wondrous smile on her face and her thin finger gestured outside the window. There was a young boy with a dragon on his shoulder. The dragon’s scales glowed an iridescent purplish color that threw bright pinpricks of light on the buildings that a disco ball would emit. The odd friends met with an old man with a long beard, who pulled a box of chocolates out of thin air. They ate a few pieces and continued down the road merrily together. I was distracted as an office building outside condensed itself and transformed into a library. “Are you doing that?” “Who else would be doing it?”
she murmured rhetorically and glanced at my coffee. I hadn’t taken a sip since it appeared. “How do you take your coffee?” “Cream and sugar.” I muttered as a pixie floated out of the light bulbs in the ceiling. The Writer tapped my cup and the coffee changed from black to an opaque hazelnut color. “Am I the only one at least somewhat mystified? I’m about to jump out of my skin. Did you slip me some sort of new drug?” “You’re not on drugs. Everyone else is used to this constant change, they’ve all been here for years so it’s grown old to them,” as she took sips of coffee between sentences. “Did you kidnap them? Are we all dead? Why aren’t they talking to us?” “Can’t you see they’re busy?” gesturing to the people surrounding us. “I didn’t kidnap them. None of you are dead. You’re in my realm now, and out of Limbo. I brought everyone here from Limbo and other forms of purgatory and reality. We are in the Realm of Imagination. I, The Writer, play as the Lord of Misrule to reality. People escape to this place from Fate and its harshness.” “I don’t believe this.” I stared at her, disconcerted. We shuddered as the air grew cold. A ripple formed on the surface of my coffee. A huge gray cloud of smoke began to descend onto the street outside. “Not today,” muttered The Writer. Her green eyes turned blue, and there was an inkling of annoyance in her tone as she stared at the cloud, “I hate family reunions.”
