New youth space
in Riddells Creek open Movie and game nights, cooking and sports programs and workplace training are just a few of the opportunities available for young people at Council’s new youth space in Riddells Creek. The new weekly youth space that runs on Thursdays from 4pm–6pm offers a range of activities and events that encourage young people (12-18 years) to connect with services, the community and each other – building skills, confidence and social capacity in the process. Come along to Riddells Creek Community Centre at 74 Main Road, Riddells Creek, and find out more. Battle of the Bands Dr. Frisco will perform at the FReeZA Push Start’s annual Battle of the Bands Regional Finals later this year after winning the Macedon Ranges heat recently. The band performed in front of a great crowd at Kyneton Town Hall on Saturday 25 August, with the band Crane announced as runners-up. The competition showcased a diverse range of local bands and songwriters, with performances from Sam Tucker, Tim Allen, Lana Hughes, Lucy Ramshaw and last year’s Macedon Ranges heat winners, Lazerlips. Council would like to congratulate all entrants in the Macedon Ranges Battle of the Bands heat, and wish Dr. Frisco the best of luck in the regional finals. The diverse achievements of young people across the Macedon Ranges were celebrated recently at the 2018 Youth Awards. Held at Kyneton Town Hall in August, the event brought young parents, parents and the broader community together to acknowledge the talent, enthusiasm and contribution that young people make across our region. Breastfeeding support
Did you know that our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Service offers free breastfeeding support to all mothers in Macedon Ranges Shire? Extra support for mothers experiencing initial difficulties in their child’s first weeks and throughout their breastfeeding experience is offered by lactation consultants at a breastfeeding support session. The Breastfeeding Support Service does not require an appointment, with the clinic open every Tuesday from 1.30pm-4pm at the Woodend Maternal and Child Health Centre, 49 Forest Street Woodend (located with Cobaw Community Health). Local mum Bonnie Pearson utilised the service following the birth of her twin daughters, Leni and Miida Shpayzer (pictured), and found the experience overwhelmingly positive. “We came down on a couple of Tuesday’s and spent some time here”, she said. “Andrea (MCH nurse) has checked how the girls were latching, and talked through their growth spurts…she’s been really helpful. I’ve got friends that live in Melbourne and the city that have no support, so it’s pretty amazing to have that here”. Preparing your property for the fire season Spring is the perfect time to get your property ready for the summer bushfire season.
Here are our top tips for preparing your property: • slash grass and keep it under 75mm • rake up and remove dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark (also called fine fuels) • remove any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote a fire • store flammable liquids well away from the house • store woodpiles away from the house • place metal flyscreens or window shutters over windows • keep gutters clean of fine fuels • remove all noxious weeds from your property • face your LPG cylinders vent-pipe away from the house and store securely in an upright position • prepare your bushfire survival plan. Fire ready property inspections
Preventing fires is everyone’s responsibility and a well maintained property will help reduce the risk of fire to local communities.
From October, fire management officers will begin annual property inspections to ensure properties do not present a fire risk over the summer. If a property is identified as a fire hazard, we will issue a fire prevention notice.

If the notice is not complied with, we will be forced to complete the work required and the property owner will be charged with associated costs, in addition to a $1,612 fine.
Roadsides and fire risk
Did you know that each year we slash around 1,000km of roadsides for fire prevention? Fires start on roadsides due to hot vehicle exhausts, mechanical failures and collisions. We slash high use roadsides to reduce the chances of these incidents resulting in a fire. Typically 80 per cent of traffic uses 20 per cent of our roads, so it makes sense to slash those roads as a priority. Note: slashed roadsides are not effective firebreaks, particularly in extreme conditions and high winds. The best way to protect your home is to maintain your property and leave early, long before flames are visible. Slashing your roadside is not an effective way to reduce fire risk to your property.
Baling for hay and fire prevention
Each year we receive enquiries from residents who have received a fire prevention notice and are baling for hay. If you are planning on baling, it’s important that you make contact with our fire management officers prior to the due date on your notice to advise them. You must complete an application for extension which will give you extra time for the works to be carried out. For more information: mrsc.vic.gov.au

Sustainability on the agenda
We’re making it easier for households to go green with a number of new initiatives that focus on sustainable design. Sustainable design is an approach to building or renovating that considers elements such as orientation, thermal mass, cross-ventilation, better insulation, external shading and window placement as key factors in helping to reduce a building’s reliance on natural resources.

Building decks, verandahs or pergolas
Decks, verandahs and pergolas can add to your dwelling both in value and liveability. Summer is the time of year many home owners decide to build these structures to improve their property and lifestyle. Is a building permit required?

Yes Construction of a raised timber or steel deck attached to any building or around a swimming pool.
Verandahs and pergolas
The difference between a verandah and a pergola is that a pergola does not have walls or a roof other than rafters, battens or shade cloth. A pergola may be attached to a dwelling. Yes Construction of a verandah attached to any building No Construction of a stand-alone verandah that: • is not attached to another building • is less than 10m2 in floor area • is no more than 3m in height • is no more than 2.4m in height within 1m of a boundary • is located no further forward than the front wall of the dwelling • is not over an easement. Issues and opportunities for Romsey
Romsey residents have helped us identify issues and opportunities for the town following a series of recent community workshops and surveys.
Feedback collected is currently being reviewed, and will contribute to the development of a strategic plan that will help shape the future of Romsey beyond 2021. Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct
Council is continuing to work with the community, and state and federal governments to realise the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct. The precinct proposes to have a mix of indoor sports courts and outdoor sports fields, plus other recreational facilities spread across two interconnected sites in New Gisborne. The first stage of the project is estimated to cost $31.4milllion with a further $10million required for the second stage. Council cannot fund this alone and will be seeking substantial support from the state and federal governments to make the project a reality. Major projects Romsey Ecotherapy Park update
Stage one of the transformation of the former Romsey Primary School site in Main Street is now complete. Council worked with Cobaw Community Health and Romsey Ecotherapy Park Inc (formerly the Greater Romsey All-Abilities Park Committee) to transform the 150year old building into a community health centre surrounded by an allinclusive park. The new community health suite offers all of Cobaw’s health and wellbeing services in early childhood, youth, families, adults, aged and disability. Stage one of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park sits on the Main Street side of the site, and has been designed with an emphasis on providing people of all ages and abilities with a unique sensory and therapeutic experience in nature.

Romsey and Riddells Creek kindergartens
Kindergarten educators at Romsey and Riddells Creek Kindergartens are looking forward to moving back in to their refurbished spaces later this year following significant upgrades. The improvement works, which are currently underway, aim to meet the needs of a growing community, and include a revitalisation of learning spaces, extension of the kindergarten veranda and upgraded amenities. New look Gisborne Library

Macedon Ranges Shared Trails Feasibility
Council will investigate an increase in shared walking and cycling paths in the shire as an action of the Council Plan (Year Two). The Macedon Ranges Shared Trails Feasibility Studies will consider a number of opportunities for shared off-road trails throughout the Macedon Ranges and onto Daylesford (Council’s border at Tylden). The studies will include benefits, costs to develop and maintain the trails, as well as outlining staged components that are future project ready. A draft feasibility studies document is expected to be available for public comment later in 2018 and will be guided by the feedback received from land managers, land owners, stakeholders and the community.
New sporting facilities get the thumbs up
Sporting clubs in Kyneton have been making the most of the newly redeveloped facilities at Kyneton Showgrounds. Recent upgrades include new femalefriendly home and away change rooms, unisex umpire facilities and improved public toilets. The improvements enhance the historic and central sporting precinct for the town, and also enable local clubs to attract and retain more women and girls to their groups and teams. Gisborne roundabouts Landscaping on two new roundabouts at the Station Road intersection in Gisborne are now complete.

The distinctive landscaping on the roundabouts references lava formations in the area, with drifts of native plantings flowing out amongst contrasting stone mulch.
Streetscapes
Campaspe River Walking Trail update
Almost two kilometres of footpath works are underway along the Campaspe River Walking Trail in Kyneton.
Improvements include 2km of the existing gravel path upgraded to a 2.5m wide concrete shared path from Piper Street to the edge of Wedge Street. The upgrade will increase accessibility for people using wheelchairs or walking frames, and make the trail more suitable for walkers, runners, cyclists and people pushing prams. The project was funded by the Victorian Government’s Regional Development – Infrastructure Fund ($300,000), the Transport Investing in Regions Fund ($50,000) and Council ($200,000). Further sections will be developed as funding becomes available.
Works to update the pavement around the Kyneton War Memorial is now complete. Drainage network upgrades recently completed include: • Forest Street, Woodend • Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne Footpath works recently completed include: • Fisher Street, Gisborne • Barry Road, New Gisborne • Wyralla Crescent, Gisborne These footpath works will improve infrastructure and transport links, and pedestrian safety around the shire. Upgrades to the asphalt surface were completed at Fersfield Road, Gisborne and maintenance work was finished on Barbower Road, Edgecombe.
