5

Our history

From distinguished beginnings …

As a forward-thinking publisher for the past 180 years, Macmillan has always been passionate, supportive and innovative.

When brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded their publishing company in 1843, they created a place that would recognise and value great contemporary writing. They made a mark on the literary world, publishing an extraordinary range of works by extraordinary authors such as Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling to name a few.

… into Africa

When former British Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, became chairperson in the middle of the 20th century, he decided that education should be a key investment area of the organisation. With his vision, the company established itself as a worldleading educational publisher with an

outstanding reputation. His famous ‘Winds of Change’ tour of Africa in the 1960s not only changed the political face of Africa, but also provided the grand old man of publishing an opportunity to expand the Macmillan Publishing empire into Africa.

6

… and South Africa

Harold Macmillan’s ‘Winds of Change’ continued to blow throughout South Africa in the 1970s, and Macmillan BOLESWA emerged as a fresh breeze from the old, conservative style of Southern African publishing – and soon became a potent educational publishing force in the region.

Due to apartheid in South Africa, the focus was soon changed to Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland where few publishers ventured. From a relatively small Swaziland base, unfettered by apartheid constraints, BOLESWA grew rapidly – and became the first affirmative action publishing company –long before it was mandatory.

With strong editorial and production support from the UK, BOLESWA developed fresh, innovative products, which were light years ahead of the competition. The ‘Winds of Change’ which gave birth to BOLESWA were often tempestuous and frequently unpredictable, but they resulted in the creation of a major publishing undertaking in the southern African region.

In late 1994, Macmillan publishing returned to South Africa and Macmillan South Africa (Pty) Ltd was established and registered.

Now part of a much bigger publishing picture …

Over the years the structure of the Macmillan publishing group has shifted to expand in different sectors and markets. Today Macmillan Education is part of Springer Nature, created in May 2015 when the majority of Macmillan

Science and Education formally merged with Springer Science, Business Media, and the Nature Group to become the largest academic publishing company in the world.

Macmillan Education South Africa says YES to Reducing Unemployment

Youth Employment Service (YES) is a business-led collaboration with government and labour to create one million first-time work opportunities for South Africa’s unemployed youth.

Empowered, productive young people are given an opportunity to uplift themselves and contribute to shaping the country’s social and economic future.

Youth@work, a vetted YES implementation partner, provides Macmillan’s funded unemployed youth with a supported, meaningful 12 months of work experience. Youth are placed across 4 provinces in sectors aligned with their interests: Education, Culinary, Agriculture, Information & Technology and Sports/Recreation. They gain practical work experience in the areas of Teacher Assistants, Administration, IT Support, Classroom Assistance, and Sports Coaching. The impact of quality work experience has translated into meaningful employment and new start-ups.

During their 12-month tenure, youth are provided with structured capacity development interventions in the form

of digital learning platforms covering 40 modules of work readiness content and monthly Think Tank sessions.

Macmillan is a proud YES Corporate Partner since 2019 and remains committed to an all-hands-on-deck response to South Africa’s youth development. Our contribution to youth, job creation, community-based work, the SMME sector and supporting thriving microeconomic development further underpins our alignment to the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030 – Quality Education, Zero Hunger and Gender Equality as 67% of youth are female.

Success Story:

Corné Robyn Titus – Teacher Assistant at Thomas Wildschutt Primary School, Western Cape

“The principal of Thomas Wildschutt Primary School informed me about this opportunity with YES. I have been doing my teaching practice and performed well at the school, which led to the principal offering me this opportunity. The experience has been fantastic. I have learnt a lot of new skills such as group work, computer skills, MS Office, Google docs, interpersonal skills, time management, etc. The YES modules taught me a lot about Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking. I learned more about Health and Well-Being. This work experience changed my family’s life, as my income helps a great deal in the house. I help with electricity and groceries each month. I was fortunate enough to get a job during COVID, and for that, I am grateful.

18

During my YES year, I learned much about different cultures and languages at the school. This will benefit me in future whenever I come across other cultures. My mentor (the principal) saw my potential and asked me to join the fundraising committee.

My message to the youth is that they should never stop believing in themselves.

Thank you Macmillan for investing in youth like me”

Macmillan Education South Africa Bridging the Skills Divide

At Macmillan Education South Africa, advancing education has been at the core of what we do and, since 2018, we have invested in the development of a number of youth programmes, such as learnerships for unemployed people and people living with disabilities, and funding higher education bursaries. The learnerships have been through partnering with a reputable and accredited training college where we provide programmes to more than 100 learners every year. For higher education, we provide early childhood development (ECD) bursaries, where learners qualify with degrees or certificates, depending on the course they registered for.

Learnerships play a pivotal role in addressing South Africa’s unemployment and, by design, bridge critical skills gaps for youth to attain relevant theoretical knowledge and practical work-based experience. They are an enabler for economic growth and job creation, translated through traditional forms

of employment opportunities and growing our country’s entrepreneurial base.

The key focus for early childhood development programmes for aspiring ECD practitioners is based on various scientific studies. It is now understood that the physical, psychological, cognitive and social development that occurs between birth and school-going age has a lasting impact on a child’s future growth and development. Early childhood development plays a key role in developing the building blocks for children to reach their future potential and has a broader impact on families and communities.

Macmillan is proud to be part of the solution to changing the unemployment trajectory through access to education and job creation for South Africa’s most vulnerable youth and people living with disabilities (PWD).

Macmillan Education Gives Hope to a Centre in

Need

The Shine by Hope Centre was founded by Portia Diboke in 2011 and began as a haven for the elderly. Many of the elderly brought their grandkids with them, and soon, the number of kiddies at the centre increased. These kids were left behind by parents who barely cared for them.

In 2016, the Shine by Hope Day Care Centre and PreSchool was officially registered with the Department of Social Development. Portia believes in the power of hope, hence the name.

Over time, it grew into a fee-paying day centre and preschool. By 2023, it had 69 children aged from babies to 6 years. Many parents rely on government grants and pay what they can afford for their children’s care. Portia, the founder, is the only one receiving a salary from the Department of Education.

As part of Macmillan Education’s 180-Year

Giving

Back initiative, Macmillan decided to help this centre ‘shine’.

The initial idea was to revamp the classrooms, but the first item on their wish list was a new look for the building outside to set the stage for a positive and vibrant learning environment. The building was indeed very worn and dull.

The work was done in phases, with the project’s highlight when 25 volunteers from Macmillan Education showed

their artistic skills and transformed the school into a colourful haven.

The renewed ambience attracted more parents, increasing enrollment to 96 kids in 2024.

20

A Beacon of Hope for Girls in Need

Home of Hope for Girls, a registered charity, was founded in 2000 and offers a safe home for survivors of abusive situations predominantly linked to child sex trafficking. Over 23 years, the founder, Mam Khanyi, has rescued over 12,000 vulnerable girls. Currently, they have two homes in the suburbs of Johannesburg with 100 girls in full-time care.

Their vision is to end child trafficking in South Africa and the culture of exploitation and violence which robs children of their future and to restore safety, dignity and opportunity to those who have survived this abuse.

The girls are provided with a safe home environment and access to educational resources. Promoting the importance of education is an important part of what they do. They help neglected girls enrol in school and obtain school uniforms, textbooks and other educational necessities. Home of Hope for Girls recognises that educating girls goes a long way towards their independence and success in adulthood.

As part of Springer Nature, Macmillan’s vision revolves around expediting solutions to the world’s pressing challenges and positively contributing to the research, education, and professional communities we engage with.

One way we actualise this vision is by extending charitable contributions to causes that align with our objectives.

We support individuals and communities in pursuing discovery, learning, and worldwide achievement.

Inspired by Home of Hope’s resolute commitment to establishing a secure environment and fostering a brighter world for young girls in need, Macmillan Education South Africa, on behalf of Springer Nature, has contributed 1000 euros in aid of the girls’ school fees.

In the spirit of Women’s Month, Macmillan donated 100 gift bags brimming with essential toiletries and tokens of care for each girl – a much-needed item on their wish list.

In the words of Mam Khanyi, “A girl’s background does not define her future, and by giving her a chance, she can lead her community.”
