The focus differs for all provinces, but reading is still a key focus in most provinces. Books in African languages are scarce, so children do not have the opportunity to read in their home language. Some classrooms have no books, and even those classes with sets of readers often have them at the wrong level. Overcoming these challenges is not going to be an easy task.
This issue focuses on all the readers available from Macmillan Education. You are welcome to contact the Macmillan Sales representative in your province to assist you should you need sample copies to show your customers, want to set up an exhibition at a school, train your team on our readers, or if you need brochures in printed or digital format to distribute.
In these very challenging times, it is important to stay positive and focused, and we hope that the article on ‘How to create a positive mindset and achieve your goals’ will help you do exactly that.
‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy’. To ensure this does not happen to our customers, three booksellers can each win a meal voucher for R500 at a restaurant near them. You only need to answer one easy question in this issue.
Until we talk again next month!
Regards, The Macmillan Team
MACMILLAN EDUCATION
TODAY!
The five pillars of our transformation journey
Macmillan Education South Africa strives to build a transformed, inclusive and diverse organisation.
Macmillan Education South Africa acquires Troupant Publishers
We are pleased to announce that Macmillan Education South Africa has acquired Troupant Publishers with effect from 22 March 2023. The two companies have worked together in a joint venture since 2007, publishing and distributing books for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector.
Troupant Publishers has developed a wide range of respected, high-quality textbooks and lecturer resources for TVET colleges. Macmillan’s role has been to manage the sales, marketing, customer service and distribution of these books. From a customer point of view, there will be no change in the process of ordering and receiving books. Orders will continue to be placed with Macmillan Education for supply.
It has been wonderful to see the development of Troupant Publishers over the years. The company started publishing engineering textbooks for the vocational sector in the 1980s. The introduction of the new NCV curriculum in 2007 led to rapid expansion, and Troupant became well known for the high quality of their textbooks which supported students to learn and lecturers to teach. In 2015 the company was sold to Van Schaik Bookstore, when the founder and owner retired.
Macmillan Education and Troupant Publishers are delighted that the two companies will now be even more closely aligned, and we look forward to a successful future together.
Out and about!
Macmillan Education Sales and Marketing conference
The Macmillan Education sales and marketing team held a conference at the Protea Hotel in Midrand from 29 – 31 March.
The theme for the conference was ‘Passionate about education’, and the team’s passion for education was clearly visible in all the discussions and activities they took part in over the three days.
The programme was packed with discussions, brainstorming sessions, product training and roleplays.
The Provincial Education Department’s strategies, procurement plans, activities and events for the rest of 2023 were shared by the provincial managers, and plans were discussed on how the sales and marketing teams can continue to support education.
Booksellers are our feet on the ground and were therefore a key focus on the agenda. Ways to support booksellers were discussed and more information will be shared in due time.

HOW TO CREATE A POSITIVE MINDSET AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
To reach your goals, you need to create a positive mindset. How do you create a positive mindset?
1. Create positive habits. You need to know why you want to change. In other words, you need to have a purpose. This will be the driving force for you to stick to your goals and your positive habits.
2. Be consistent. Just keep doing it.
3. Create a success mindset. The more you think of your goals, the more you will work to achieve them. Remind yourself constantly of your goals – visualise them.
How do you keep a positive mindset in a world filled with negativity?
Listen to your favourite music. Sing and dance along! Music will lift your spirits!
Practice gratitude. Be thankful for everything you have. Keep a gratitude journal.
Breathe consciously, purposefully and mindfully.
Use positive self-talk to motivate yourself. Avoid phrases like ‘I can’t’ and ‘I won’t’. Don’t be negative!
Eat healthy food. Take time to enjoy what you are eating by eating slowly.
Spend time in nature. Use your senses to identify the sounds, smells and sights of your surroundings.

A visit from the Hodder Education team
The Hodder Education team visited South Africa, Namibia and Botswana from 13th – 24th March.
Their team consisted of Lucy Clark – Head of International Sales, Charlie de la Bedoyere –International Sales Manager for Africa and South Asia and Emily Bell – International Training Manager.
Their aim for a visit was to conduct teacher workshops and school and ministry visits to establish relationships and to determine how they can support the MacmillanHodder partnership and grow sales.
Emily conducted the training for the Lower Secondary (Checkpoint) phase, and the topic was Formative Assessment and Differentiation. We’ll be looking to roll out more Teacher Workshops locally as the need arises – please do keep letting us know the requests from your customers about their teaching needs!
Hodder publishes a wide range of curricula, including Cambridge International, International Baccalaureate and Edexcel and assessment resources used in IEB schools. They also have other imprints such as Rising Stars, Galore Park and the most recent addition of John Catt Education, which focuses on Professional Development. The ever-popular and newly updated levelled Reading Program – Reading Planet - is widely used and growing with engaging stories for a primary age, which all learners can relate to.
We are proud to be the agents for Hodder in Southern Africa and look forward to continuing informing our sales team about their offerings.
