A message from the Macmillan Team Dear Educator, Time is slipping through our fingers like sand in an hourglass, and can you believe it? Just nine weeks left until 2024 rolls in! This year was particularly special, not only because the Springboks brought the coveted Rugby World Cup home, but it also marked Macmillan’s 180th anniversary. It’s been 180 years since the Macmillan brothers, Daniel and Alexander, founded our publishing company in 1843. Their vision was rooted in a dedication to learning, innovation, social good, and celebrating progress in education. You can delve deeper into their inspiring story on page 4. To honour their legacy, we’ve launched our 180 Days of Giving Back initiatives. These endeavours continue the Macmillan brothers’ tradition of uniting people, supporting communities, and making a positive impact. For more details about our Home of Hope initiative, please refer to page 7. We are currently revamping an ECD 2

centre in Katlehong and will tell you more about this project in the next issue of our newsletter early in 2024. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce the Big Macmillan Book Bonanza, a fantastic opportunity for schools to enjoy special discounts on all CAPS books and selected resource materials and readers. Discover our inspiring 180-year journey When brothers Daniel and Alexander Macmillan founded their publishing company in 1843, they created a place that would recognise and value great contemporary writing. They soon made their mark on the literary world, publishing a range of works by extraordinary authors: Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling to name but a few. A love of learning, reading and innovation has always been our mission since the very beginning. 180 years later, we are building on the Macmillan brothers’ commitment to learning and innovation and celebrating the progress that has been made in education thanks to their vision. Macmillan CARES

180 Days of Giving Back Initiative Home of Hope for Girls: A Beacon of Hope in South Africa In 2000, a remarkable woman named Mam Khanya founded “Home of Hope for Girls”, a registered charity committed to rescuing and rehabilitating survivors of abusive situations primarily linked to child sex trafficking. Over the span of 23 years, her tireless efforts have led to the rescue and transformation of over 12,000 vulnerable girls, shining a beacon of hope in the face of adversity. Providing Sanctuary in the Suburbs of Johannesburg Currently, Home of Hope for Girls operates two secure homes nestled in the suburbs of Johannesburg. Within the walls of these homes, they provide full-time care and support for 100 girls who have found refuge from the harrowing experiences they’ve endured. These homes are sanctuaries where healing begins and dreams are rekindled. 7

180 Days of Giving Back: Macmillan Education’s Contribution Macmillan Education South Africa recently participated in the “180 Days of Giving Back” initiative in a heartwarming display of solidarity and support. Their staff generously contributed toiletries, a much-needed item on Home of Hope’s wish list. One hundred care bags were meticulously prepared, each containing a note conveying the message that each girl is special. Each bag also contained a treat to sweeten the girls’ days and momentarily relieve them from the burdens of their past. A Day of Connection and Inspiration On a memorable Saturday, the 25th of August, three representatives from Macmillan Education visited the Home of Hope for Girls. They spent time with the girls, sharing stories, laughter and compassion. They listened to Mam Khanyi’s heartwarming tales of hope and resilience. The visit was a powerful reminder that together, through acts of kindness and unwavering dedication, we can change lives and shape brighter futures. In the words of Mam Khanyi herself, “A girl’s background does not define her future, and by giving her a chance, she can lead her community.” Home of Hope for Girls is a testament to the transformative power of love, education and community support, offering hope to those who need it most. School Leadership and Management Values-driven Leadership “Values-driven leadership implies a conscious commitment by leaders at all levels (of education) to lead with their values and create a culture that optimises performance, ethical practice, social contribution and environmental impact.” The 21st century change leader frequently needs to decide between doing the right thing and doing things right (the good thing to do). It results in us having to conclude whether a decision will be good or bad.

According to the internet, the average person makes about 35 000 decisions per day. The quantity of decisions is not important, but the quality is. Our decision-making is based on our values which serve as a rudder to steer us through the stormy seas of day-to-day life; safely past bribes, enticement, temptation, cheating, corruption… This means that the values-driven leader will need to know themselves very well. Know your:

Purpose: This is our reason for being which serves to guide

all our thoughts and actions. For the values-driven leader it should be the purpose to leave the world better than you found it; to lead the school community to perform optimally whilst following the ethical leader’s example.

Values: These are the things we care about most deeply such

as family, knowledge, fairness and integrity. The leader’s values will inspire them to use their position not for power but for empowerment.

Principles: These are the beliefs and norms that serve as the

line that may not be crossed by others when interacting with us. For example: treat other people the way you want to be treated; honesty is the best policy; keep small promises...

We can illustrate values-driven leadership using the Iceberg model: Visible

Act Practice

Able to occupy the moral high ground and create a values-driven culture.

Purpose

Not Visible

Principles VALUES

Underpin who I am, drives choices, informs priorities, guides behaviour/actions. 9

Ethics is not about being better than someone else: it’s about being the best we can be. For this reason, the values-driven leader will never stray from their values to subscribe to the deadly sins identified by Mahatma Ghandi. Leaders guilty of the following sins are willing to sacrifice the greater good of the school community for short-term selfish needs: • Wealth without work • Pleasure without conscience • Knowledge without character • Science without humanity

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

• Religion without sacrifice

~ Mahatma Gandhi

• Commerce without morality

• Politics without principles

Prof Jonathan Jansen adds another perspective on this by concluding: “Ethics is not simply the absence of wrongdoing; it is also the failure to speak out in the face of evil.” The question is: Do we, as leaders in education, speak out when there is wrongdoing? • An educational leader cannot be neutral in terms of values or outcomes: they underpin the organisational behaviour of the school. • While each school and each person in a school will have a different value system, certain values are enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution. • These values serve as a moral compass for all people, protecting our rights and affirming the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom. As leaders in education, we are bound by the SACE Code of Ethics. But if we are driven by purpose, principles and values and understand the consequences of “bad” decisions, we do not need a Code of Ethics or any tick list to regulate our actions. Albert Einstein reminds: “Try first to be a man of value; success will follow.” References: https://cvdl.ben.edu/leadership-framework/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u399XmkjeXo | Ethics in Education, Chapter 8: NACF Report

Teacher Talk Establishing a collaborative learning environment A collaborative classroom is one where learners actually collaborate with one another and the teacher in a stimulating setting for group learning. In collaborative classrooms, conversation is encouraged, class engagement is enhanced, and more information is generated. These goals are achieved through the use of Increases group learning higher-level Builds thinking as concepts, peer interpersonal learners learn feedback, and skills from each frequently other technology such as tablets, cell phones Benefits of Builds and computers. self-esteem collaborative Increases because each Classrooms that learner learning person is promote group retention essential to learning are the group’s referred to as success Promotes a collaborative positive attitude classrooms. towards the subject Learners are matter encouraged to think critically, solve issues, and provide feedback to peers in a collaborative classroom. Learners must be taught how to communicate, share ideas and offer solutions in order to achieve this goal. These group activities foster intellectual, emotional and social development in young people, preparing them for careers in the twenty-first century.

Transitioning into the collaborative classroom approach Individualised learning techniques like lecturing, listening, taking notes and assessment may not fully disappear in collaborative classrooms, but rather coexist with other procedures that are based on learner conversation and active engagement with the course material. The objective is the same, which is to change learning from a teacher-centred to a learner-centred paradigm, regardless of the precise strategy or how much of the lecture-based course is replaced. Both 13

teachers and learners should be able to effectively interact by owning their individual contributions. This tactic creates a supportive, uplifting and empowering community of engaged learners. Strategies for collaborative learning that increase learner accomplishment In order to promote learner achievement, teachers can use the following collaborative learning techniques in their lessons: Think-Pair-Share: A method whereby learners consider an issue on their own, partner up with a classmate to discuss it, and then submit their answers to another pair or the entire class Jigsaw: A method for comprehension Learner-led teaching: Where the learners become the teacher. The learner can practice public speaking while researching, understanding and presenting the material in this activity.

Artificial Intelligence in the classroom The way that learners learn and teachers teach could be revolutionised by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom. AI algorithms can offer tailored criticism and suggestions to learners, resulting in a more interesting and productive learning environment. Artificial intelligence is playing a bigger and bigger role in our daily lives, and it has the power to completely change the way we study, work and interact. In the field of education, artificial intelligence has the potential to give learners a more individualised and interesting learning experience and to support teachers in better meeting the needs of each individual learner. Despite these potential advantages, there are still a number of difficulties with implementing AI in the classroom, such as the requirement for technical competence, a lack of resources, and ethical issues.

Advantages of incorporating AI in the classroom •  Learners may benefit from a more individualised learning experience thanks to AI. •  AI algorithms are able to analyse learner data, adjust to their learning preferences, and provide feedback and suggestions that are specific to each learner’s needs and aptitudes. •  Teachers can assist learners in developing a critical perspective on AI and better prepare them for the potential and challenges of the digital age. •  Learners develop important 21st-century skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration.

The difficulties of implementing AI in the classroom • Technical expertise •  Cost of AI tools and applications •  Ethical concerns associated with privacy, security and the job market 15

Best practises for incorporating AI in the classroom Partner with a reliable AI Provider • Finding a trustworthy AI partner is essential for integrating AI into the classroom successfully. • This may be a tech firm, a regional institution, or a nonprofit with a focus on AI teaching. • For teachers to successfully integrate AI into their teaching practices, the proper partner can offer support, training and direction.

Start Small • Rather than trying to implement AI across the entire curriculum, it is recommended that teachers start small and work their way up. • This allows teachers to gain experience with the technology, build confidence, and refine their teaching practices over time. • For example, teachers could start by incorporating AI-powered learning games into their lessons or using AI algorithms to provide learners with personalised feedback on their assignments.

Foster Ethical And Critical Thinking • Learners have the chance to develop a critical viewpoint on AI and its effects on society when exposed to AI in the classroom. • Teachers should challenge their learners to evaluate the ethical implications of AI and the possible negative effects of its widespread adoption. • This can assist learners in developing into responsible, knowledgeable digital citizens who are able to successfully manage the opportunities and problems of the digital age.

Macmillan Teacher Campus News MeLDS PROGRAMME The MeLDS (Macmillan eLearning Development Schools) program, a CSI initiative by Macmillan Education, is proud to celebrate its 7th year of empowering South African teachers in the field of digital education.

MeLDS is a dedicated teacher development programme designed to enhance the digital fluency of educators working in previously disadvantaged schools. While the primary focus remains on Foundation Phase teachers, we have expanded our reach to include Grade R and select Intermediate Phase teachers in the 2023 edition. On 24 & 25 July, the 2023 programme was launched at the two participating schools in KwaZulu-Natal. Each participating teacher was equipped with a state-ofthe-art laptop preloaded with the latest educational software and valuable resources to aid them during their training journey. Additionally, every school principal received a laptop and three data projectors to facilitate enhanced learning experiences within their schools. Intensive coaching and training sessions with the aim to empower The Principal from Saphumelela Full Service School 17

teachers with the skills and knowledge required to integrate digital technology into their classrooms effectively followed. A professional learning community was established to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among dedicated educators. Teachers actively shared their achievements and innovative practices, showcasing their enthusiasm for digital learning. It's been heartening to witness the enthusiasm of the teachers participating in the programme. Many of them went above and beyond, incorporating skills and strategies beyond what was covered in their training, demonstrating their commitment to elevating education in their communities. The culmination of MeLDS 2023 was celebrated with an awards ceremony on the 26th of September. During this event, each participating teacher was honoured with a MeLDS certificate, recognising their dedication and commitment to professional development and for completing the training successfully. MeLDS 2023 has been an outstanding success, and we eagerly anticipate continuing this transformative journey in the years ahead. Our commitment to enhancing digital education and empowering teachers remains unwavering, and we look forward to making an even greater impact in South Africa's educational landscape in the future. Thank you to all our dedicated educators for their hard work and determination.
