Farewell to Preggy Naidoo After nearly 30 years with Macmillan South Africa, it’s time for us to bid a sad farewell to Preggy Naidoo as he enters his retirement. Preggy joined Macmillan from the printing industry, working in the Production department during the early years of curriculum change in the 1990s. There was rapid expansion in educational publishing at that time, and Preggy helped the company to adapt to the changing times. Preggy was appointed as Production Director in the early 2000s, using his close connections with printers to ensure that Macmillan stayed at the forefront of technical innovation. Digital printing was just starting to take off and made a huge difference to printing small quantities of books like Teachers’ Guides. The excellent relationships that he built meant that we were able to deliver books quickly to customers, sometimes at very short notice when there was a crisis. 8 years ago, Preggy took on the role of MD for Macmillan South Africa. Since then, he has helped to grow the company despite much uncertainty in the industry. He played a key role in securing a Level 1 B-BBEE rating for Macmillan, ensuring that we support the underlying principles of B-BBEE in the way that we do business. His emphasis on caring for staff as individuals and respecting people at all levels has created a positive, welcoming work environment which extends to our relationship with our customers. I’m sure that you will join us in wishing Preggy all the best in his well-earned retirement. In true Preggy style, he has plans to conquer some of the major peaks in the world, striving for excellence in a new direction in this next phase of his life. He will be missed by all of us, but he has made sure that his legacy will continue through all those who have worked with him and learned from him over the years.

How to adapt to change You don’t have to fear change Change is inevitable. Some changes are small and easy to adapt to, while others are large and more difficult to process. No matter the changes, we need to learn how to anticipate them and frame how we think about them. By having a positive mindset and by understanding the scope of the change, we can adapt to it in a more thoughtful way.

DEALING WITH CHANGE IN MY WORKPLACE •  Let go of how it used to be. For many of us we look to the past as a much simpler time. We have to let it go to avoid being consumed in the gloom. •  Accept that change is not only happening to me but it’s happening to everyone around the world, thus connecting us all. •  We have to grow, improve and move forward with the change. •  Focus on something positive to work towards – this can be your stimulus to re-energise. •  Each day has its ups and downs but focus on controlling your own actions. •  Speaking to others helps us to break the negative patterns and confusing messages that form in our minds.

Adapting to change means... •  Acceptance: Approach change as a process and be ready to move at your own pace •  Face your fears •  Take time to see the positives •  Find support from other people who have gone through change and have succeeded •  No self doubt – love yourself •  Allow the change to make you stronger 11

Have a positive mind 1

Assess your current mindset about change

2

Accept that change is inevitable

3

REFLECTION: How have I handled change in the past and how will I handle change in the future?

4

Take RESPONSIBILITY for how you respond to change

5

Adopt a positive attitude

6

Be accountable for how you adapt to change

SECRETS TO SUCCESS Our first response to change is panic – Step 1 is to GAIN CONTROL. Your mind and body will show you the way to meet the CHALLENGE if you listen. Your attitude makes all the difference.

Change can give birth to our greatest life successes. Open yourself up to the possibility – • remain true to yourself • find your spiritual centre • think outside the box • dream your dreams • be patient.
