Dear BOOKSELLER
Dear Bookseller,
We hope this message finds you well. September is an exciting month at Macmillan Education, with many celebrations.
We kicked off the month on a high note, celebrating the arrival of spring on 1 September. But that was just the beginning. From September 5th to 11th, South Africa commemorated National Book Week, an important occasion emphasising the joy of reading and integration into daily life. At Macmillan Education, we are extending this celebration throughout the entire month of September.
As part of our commitment to promoting literacy and education, we’re actively involved in various activities to support this cause. We’re donating books to schools, sharing intriguing articles on our social media platforms, having exciting competitions, and contacting schools via email to introduce our extensive range of readers.
This year is particularly special as we mark Macmillan’s 180th anniversary. It’s been 180 years since the Macmillan brothers, Daniel and Alexander, founded our publishing company in 1843. Their vision was rooted in a dedication to learning, innovation, social good, and celebrating progress in education. You can delve deeper into their inspiring story on Page 3.
“I thought it worthwhile to plant a seed... If a large tree grows from this small seed, we shall be grateful.”
Daniel Macmillan
To honour their legacy, we’ve launched our “180 Days of Giving Back” initiatives. These endeavours continue the Macmillan brothers’ tradition of uniting people, supporting communities, and making a positive impact. For more details about our Home of Hope initiative, please refer to Page 5, and stay tuned for information on our second initiative in the upcoming October issue, where we’ll be revamping an ECD centre in dire need of support.
September and October are also significant for the Rugby World Cup Tournament, bringing excitement and celebrations. We want to spread this excitement to our valued booksellers at Macmillan Education. We’re gearing up for the Macmillan Big Book Bonanza, where you can score big! Look out for our announcement via email for more information on this exciting event. We invite you to join us in celebrating Macmillan’s 180th anniversary by participating in the competition on Page 9.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Until next month, let’s make September a month to remember together.
Warm regards, The Macmillan Team

180 Days of Giving Back Initiative
Home of Hope for Girls: A Beacon of Hope in South Africa
In 2000, a remarkable woman named Mam Khanya founded “Home of Hope for Girls”, a registered charity committed to rescuing and rehabilitating survivors of abusive situations primarily linked to child sex trafficking. Over the span of 23 years, her tireless efforts have led to the rescue and transformation of over 12,000 vulnerable girls, shining a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
Providing Sanctuary in the Suburbs of Johannesburg
Currently, Home of Hope for Girls operates two secure homes nestled in the suburbs of Johannesburg. Within the walls of these homes, they provide full-time care and support for 100 girls who have found refuge from the harrowing experiences they’ve endured. These homes are sanctuaries where healing begins and dreams are rekindled.
180 Days of Giving Back: Macmillan Education’s Contribution
Macmillan Education South Africa recently participated in the “180 Days of Giving Back” initiative in a heartwarming display of solidarity and support. Their staff generously contributed toiletries, a much-needed item on Home of Hope’s wish list. One hundred care bags were meticulously prepared, each containing a note conveying the message that each girl is special. Each bag also contained a treat to sweeten the girls’ days and momentarily relieve them from the burdens of their past.
A Day of Connection and Inspiration
On a memorable Saturday, the 25th of August, three representatives from Macmillan Education visited the Home of Hope for Girls. They spent time with the girls, sharing stories, laughter and compassion. They listened to Mam Khanyi’s heartwarming tales of hope and resilience. The visit was a powerful reminder that together, through acts of kindness and unwavering dedication, we can change lives and shape brighter futures.
In the words of Mam Khanyi herself, “A girl’s background does not define her future, and by giving her a chance, she can lead her community.” Home of Hope for Girls is a testament to the transformative power of love, education and community support, offering hope to those who need it most.

Even second language learners will find it easy to ‘read’ or understand the stories.
Using Big Books to ‘read’ in the classroom gives learners the opportunity to: • answer simple questions • describe and discuss characters • draw pictures, capturing the main ideas of the story • retell the story • say whether they liked the story • say how the story made them feel • respond through mime, movement and other drama activities.
