The Directors

On behalf of the 2017-2018 Miss Maroon and White Pageant production staff, welcome to our show. We have been working extremely hard and diligently to ensure that this year’s pageant is the best yet, allotting guests the best Miss Maroon and White Pageant experience ever seen in the Atlanta University Center. Preparing for this show was no easy fete. Starting in late December, it took long hours and dedication from a passionate team that was willing and able to put in the work necessary to see the best show yet. Together, we created a production that we hope will serve as a staple in Morehouse history in regard to Miss Maroon & White. For two sophomores to serve as the directors of The Miss Maroon & White Pageant is an honor taken with much respect and humility. We are extremely thankful for having the fate of the Miss Maroon and White placed in our hands. In prepping for the show, we were allotted the opportunity to work with great people and to them we are eternally grateful. To our main backers and supporters, Dean Kevin Booker and Ms. Deborah Ayoade. Assistant director of Student Life and Mr. Terrence Pryor ’15 we truly appreciate all of your assistance throughout the past four months. Terrence came back home to guide us through the day to day operations of the pageant and that helped us significantly. Without his guidance and negotiations, none of this would have been possible. We appreciate all of you for believing and allowing us to take our creative vision to new heights. To our amazing staff Kyle Durham, Michaela Johnson, David Bishop (DaeDae, DJ DosDias), Mr. Sam Phillips, Mr. Guy Mitchell, Ms. Shiekgo Carter, Christian Howard, Gian Ray, Campus Police, and the many others that contributed, we are extremely indebted for your support! To Grant Pashcal and Thomas “Trey Cox”, past directors who provided words of encouragement that contributed to the success of the pageant. You two modeled what it means to work with, lead and engage a team. It was easy to see how passionate the both of you were for the pageant’s success, and we are hopeful that with this year’s production will make you guys proud. Last, but certainly not least, the beautiful 2016-2017 Miss Maroon & White and her Court, Ms. Jasmine Mitchell, Ms. Jasmin Eatman and Ms. Taylor Brightman. You beautiful ladies show what it means to be true queens exhibiting intelligence, beauty, elegance, grace and determined personalities that cannot be replaced. It has been an honor to work with a court that wears the seal of Morehouse College so proudly. To watch you all grow into leaders you’ve become has been an amazing experience, and we know you will go on to do great things. Without further ado we present to you a production that we hope to grasp your attention, fill your spirit and intrigue you mind for years to come. Its time to “Make America Black.”! Best regards, Mark Anthony Gerard Davis II and Khari Bush, Co-Directors

Darian Chantell Penn

Darian Chantell Penn was born and raised in the bustling city of Houston, Texas, on August 6, 1996 to Mr. Derwin and Cornell Penn. From a young age, Darian knew that Spelman College was the place she wanted to attend. As a student at Spelman College, Darian has taken on her interest in political science. Her interest for legal representation began with a variety of law office internships, and city wide mock trials which led her to pursue a concentration in pre-law. Upon graduation, she aspires to continue to law school and become a prosecuting attorney. This summer, Darian will be working in Dallas, Texas as a Financial/Accounting Analyst for the Federal Reserve Bank. This internship will challenge Darian’s critical thinking skills, and enhance her overall knowledge of how economics plays a vital role in policy making and government decisions. While heavily investing in her own future, Darian continues to remain involved in the AUC community. She currently serves as a Peer Assistant Leader, New Student Orientation Leader, Vice President of the Spel-house Pre-Law Society, Secretary of the Pinky Promise Organization, a member of the Morehouse Business Association, and an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. If graced with the title of Miss Maroon and White, Darian wants to incorporate her platform entitled M.T. I. Men Taking Initiative. Darian plans to utilize this platform with the purpose of charging the Men of Morehouse with the task of asking themselves: “What can WE as a community do to succeed in a world where WE are meant to fail and not rely on our country to make decisions for us. This platform will focus on the cultivation of brilliance held within the student body, pushing them to not be complacent, but to become more active in the community. M.T.I will focus on three main targets, all geared toward developing men with disciplined minds, who will lead lives of leadership and service. These three targets are called PURSUIT of Happiness, Lifting as we Climb, and Morehouse Men on the Map. Each initiative will serve as a tool for the Men of Morehouse to reclaim and reestablish the importance and legacy of their beloved institution, while building a better future for generations to come. With a platform such as Miss Maroon and White, Darian plans to work directly with the student body of Morehouse to begin positively changing the campus culture through intentional and impactful service, beginning with engaging the West End Atlanta Community at large. She would like to thank the Men of Morehouse for giving her the opportunity to work toward this position and says that despite the outcome, she will continue to work toward the goals stated in her platform.
