THE DIRECTORS On behalf of the 2017-2018 Miss Maroon and White Pageant production staFF, welcome to our show. We have been working extremely hard and diligently to ensure that this year’s pageant is the best yet, allotting guests the best Miss Maroon and White Pageant experience ever seen in the Atlanta University Center. Preparing for this show was no easy feat. Starting in late December, it took long hours and dedication from a passionate team that was willing and able to put in the work necessary to see the best show yet. Together, we created a production that we hope will serve as a staple in Morehouse history in regard to Miss Maroon & White. WE are honored to serve as this year’s pageant directors and are humbled to be able to act in this capacity. We are extremely thankful that we were able to grow, learn, and develop with this cohort of outstanding young women. In prepping for the show, we were allotted the opportunity to work with great people and to them we are eternally grateful. To our main backers and supporters, Dean Kevin Booker and Mr. demarcus crews and Mr. Terrence Pryor, we truly appreciate all of your assistance throughout the past four months. Terrence came back home to guide us through the day to day operations of the pageant and that helped us significantly. Without his guidance and negotiations, none of this would have been possible. We appreciate all of you for believing and allowing us to take our creative vision to new heights. To Mark anthony davis past director who provided words of encouragement and advice that contributed to the success of the pageant, thank you. Last, but certainly not least, the beautiful 2017-2018 Miss Maroon & White and her Court, Ms. kalin tate, Ms. Darian penn and Ms. chantalle cannicle. You beautiful ladies show what it means to be true queens exhibiting intelligence, beauty, elegance, grace and determined personalities that cannot be replaced. It has been an honor to work with a court that wears the seal of Morehouse College so proudly. To watch you all grow into leaders you’ve become has been an amazing experience, and we know you will go on to do great things. Without further ado we present to you a production that we hope will grasp your attention, lift your spirit, and create a cinematic experience that morehouse has yet seen in a miss maroon and white pageant. Best regards, zack “holliwood” bond & khari bush, Co-Directors

Anta Sallah Njie

Anta Sallah Njie is a junior, Political Science major, double Economics and Journalism minor, from Chicago, Illinois at Spelman College. The daughter of Karen and Mustapha Njie, Anta has been committed and active in the world of social justice. She currently serves as co-vice president for the Spelman Chapter of Young Democrats, Membership Chair for Future Business Leaders of Spelman, member of the features team for Continuum, Spelman’s Undergraduate Research Journal, political news anchor for Maroon Tiger TV, and Vice President of Stay Woke HBCU; a political awareness initiative launched in 2016 for black millennials. In 2017, Miss Njie co-founded and acted as the community service chair for LYTEhouse (Lifting Youth Through Enrichment), Morehouse’s 2017 Registered Student Organization of the year, alongside 3 of her Morehouse brothers. Providing intergenerational campus mentorship and campus wide community service initiatives for each incoming freshman class at Morehouse College, she now proudly serves as the organization’s chief of staff and has played a pivotal role in the realization of the their yearly initiative titled A Night on Brown Street. This simulation has successfully charged over 300 AUC students, most of them Morehouse students, with the task of sleeping outside for one night to exemplify a level of solidarity with the shelterless population of this city and the impacts legislation overseen by Atlanta politicos has had on their state of being. The research used to design the simulation is routinely collected by Miss Njie and the remainder of the LYTEHouse team, as they choose to sleep outside amongst the homeless population of Atlanta for two days prior to the on-campus simulation every year. And this year, they are proud to announce their success in fundraising over $22,000 to generate sustainable solutions for this deprived demographic. This summer, Miss Njie interned as an assistant to the editor in chief at the oldest black publication in the country; the Chicago Defender. She also interned with Chicago Public Schools in their Academic Competitions office, placing 50 at risk youth in paid internships with aldermen, lawmakers and state representatives- proving to them that their circumstance will not ever define their capabilities. And she shot her first documentary, with partner Amaris Buford, titled Where You From. It premiered in Chicago theaters November 12, 2017 and sold out, providing an uncut illustration of the sociopolitical landscape of the city of Chicago through the stories of its residents and has an overarching goal of educating audiences on the hindered development of black chicago over time. The film was notably recognized by Ebony Magazine. She is the current Miss Black and Gold for the Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated here on Morehouse’s campus, and has fulfilled mission trips in both Cape Town, South Africa with One Heart Source and Accra, Ghana with Morehouse’s Journalism Program on full scholarship; teaching English and Math to 3rd and 4th graders and reporting on the exploitation of the booming cocoa industry on the West coast of Africa. If selected as the next Miss Maroon and White, Anta hopes to only deepen her ties with the Morehouse College community through the fulfillment of her platform, Smile Black Boy, which aims to showcase the importance of preserving the black man, both physically and psychologically, in a political and social climate as troubling as our current one. She aims to do this through the act of narrative sharing, with a distinct belief that the inability to tap into one’s self has left us misinformed on the true nature of human interaction and the components of ourselves that help shape them. Following the meaning of her favorite bible verse, Phillippians 4:13, Miss Njie believes that she can do all things through Christ who strengthens her and wants the men of Morehouse to know with her as queen, they will always have an ally in their corner.

96 Miss Maroon and W hite

Growing up, I always knew I wanted a brother. A black brother that I could be there for, to uplift and to love more than anyone else ever could. When I was blessed enough to attend Spelman, I was not only blessed with so many sisters, but I was blessed with so many intelligent and amazing black men in life from Morehouse College, that I can call my brothers. Being Miss Maroon & White has truly been an honor, and a dream come true. Being from Columbus, Georgia, where Morehouse has played Tuskegee for 82 years, since birth the tradition of Spelman and Morehouse College has been instilled in me. I have participated in the parade since I was 8 years old as a cheerleader for my school, and I remember meeting Miss Maroon & White for the first time. I ran to her and I told her “I want to be a Queen one day!” She told me, “You already are a Queen!” That statement stuck with me for life, and I knew I wanted to be just like her. When I had the opportunity to attend Spelman, the time came to live my dream. Morehouse, you gave me the opportunity to shine, to be a candle in the dark for you. Music runs through my veins, so playing the piano and singing for all of you was doing what I have always loved. The legacy I plan to leave would be that all of you are ROYALTY. I ran for Miss Maroon & White on the platform of “The Purple Reign” showing that I am a Queen, but all of Morehouse are my Kings. We live in a world where black men are overshadowed by stereotypes; as Miss Maroon & White I showed the world that you were more than statistics. From my “A Fit for a King” event and “Christmas with the Queens” Talent Showcase, everyone knew you were more than a number. Anywhere in the world you go, you are royalty and you rise against all odds. In this world, you choose the King you want to be. But to me, you are always royalty. Brothers, I see your crowns. To my successor, I pray you give Morehouse the love and care they need from their Queen. You have 81 women standing behind you and watching you succeed. The sisterhood and legacy of Miss Maroon & White is bigger than you, and is your duty to carry it with care. Morehouse chose YOU, rise up and be the Queen. Do not let anything stop you from making a change and leaving your mark. It may seem so difficult to be yourself, but do not forget who you are beneath the glitter and gold. Thank you Morehouse for loving me and letting me be your Queen. I hope I’ve made you proud. Now I retire, but by God’s grace I’ve retired with the crown that I humbly share with my Kings. In all things and all ways, Stay Luminous. Kalin Desiraye Tate The 81st Miss Maroon & White of Morehouse College

Morehouse is more than an institution to me, the students and faculty are my family. When my older brother became a Morehouse Man, I learned the importance of this institution and that has fueled me to this very day. My love for all that Morehouse stands for is everlasting and I have cherished all the moments, good and bad, near and far, during my reign. Having the blessing of serving as this year’s First Attendant to Miss Maroon & White has allowed me the opportunity of a lifetime by fulfilling one of my biggest dreams with two of my dearest sisters. My advice to pass down to the next Miss Maroon & White Court would be: Be yourself and no one else, there are many times where you may second guess yourself or your purpose, but always remember that God has placed you there for a reason, to serve the institution. Also, have fun! Your reign will swiftly pass by and you want to make sure to enjoy it and live in the moment. Love Always, D Darian Chantel Penn First Attendant to the 81st Miss Maroon & White

Throughout my reign, there have been periods of triumphs and troubles, all of which have made us stronger. The love I have for Morehouse and the students she watches over has grown more and more every day, this experience has taught me so many important lessons about life and beyond. I have made SO many memories with my court sisters, faculty, and the Morehouse family that I will keep near and dear to my heart. My words of wisdom to pass on to the next Miss Maroon & White Court would be: Always remember who you are, despite the many opinions and oppositions, it is imperative that you stay in touch with your true self. Also, love one another truly and dearly, you will never experience this time again and you must make the best of it with the people that you share this remarkable journey with. XOXO, Talle Chantalle Olivia Cannicle Second Attendant to the 81st Miss Maroon & White
