One of the most satisfying ways to express one’s thoughts, feelings, or beliefs is through art. This act of expression allows an artist to uniquely communicate with others and inspire creativity amongst fellow artists. My proposal for the concept of the senior exhibition is this idea of expression. The exhibition’s proposed title, Expressivity* is defined as the quality of being expressive. This can be applied to the field of art because all artists are automatically expressing themselves through the work that they create. In genetics, expressivity is the relative capacity of a gene to affect the phenotype of the organism of which it is a part. This relationship is quite similar to the one that artists have with their audience. As viewers looks at or interact with a piece of art, they becomes affected by it. This forms a connection between the two, allowing the spread of creativity. For me, expressivity is achieved through process work, specifically sketchbooks. I plan on displaying a majority of my sketchbook pages in a cluttered, disorganized arrangement above my organized typographic projects. My reasoning for including my sketchbook pages in the show is that they are vital to the way I design. Keeping sketchbooks has transformed the way I formulate ideas, practice variations and arrive at final designs. They also provide a record of my progress throughout each project, giving me the option of looking back at the design choices I made. Furthermore, even though my sketchbook pages are usually grouped together according to specific projects, many of them can function as stand-alone designs. Their

cluttered arrangement on the gallery wall is reflective of how I get my ideas out on paper, and will provide an interesting contrast to the neat arrangement of the other projects. Aside from my sketchbooks, hand-lettering is probably my most effective method of expressing myself. Because of this, my gallery space will also focus on my cookbook, album packaging, and several pages of my daily Biblical hand-lettering project. Designing the cookbook is what really began my practice of experimenting with letterforms and how they can be drastically altered, but still be legible. This project was what really made me realize why I love design, so it is important for me to include it in the show. Similar to the cookbook, my self-directed album packaging project allowed me to experiment with hand-lettered typography. Some parts of the overall design feature unconventional arrangements of typography, while others show a very graceful and well-planned arrangement of hand-lettered forms. Finally, my Biblical hand-lettering project has given me a lot more practice with creating letterforms and causes me to keep designing on a daily basis. I want to include this in the gallery because it allows me to express my faith as well as my love for design.
