We are the leading handler in Continental Europe
Our other key business unit, Aviapartner Handling, is led by a management team comprising Karel Bekaert, responsible for Region 1 (Belgium, France, the Netherlands); Andy Cruise, responsible for Region 2 (Germany and Italy); Patrick Lampaert, Director for Network Customers; and the company’s Executive Chairman. Together they are cementing Aviapartner’s position as the leading independent passenger and ramp handler in Continental Europe. Our Handling business unit comprises all passenger and ramp handling activities in our network. These services include check-in, ticketing, boarding assistance, baggage tracing, the loading and unloading of aircraft, cleaning, sanitary services, ground power, flight operations and crew administration, load control and communications, crew transport, and transport of passengers, baggage and cargo. In 2007, our Handling division handled a total of 268,000 flights throughout the group, which represented an 18.7% increase over the year prior. Every country in the Aviapartner Handling network booked growth in 2007 thanks to overall increased commercial efforts: Belgium (+4.8%), France (+13.6%), Germany (+10.9%), The Netherlands (+25.3%), and Italy (+84.6%).

The outstanding growth of our Italian operations in particular is thanks to the addition of three stations to the network in 2006: Milan-Malpensa, Milan-Linate, and Rome-Fiumicino. Last year, the total number of passengers handled by Aviapartner throughout the network grew to 31.2 million.

Taking Cargo to New Heights Aviapartner’s new Chief Operating Officer Cargo, Heath White, reveals his ambitious plans for expanding and improving the business unit’s already vast network. Aviapartner has nearly 2,000 employees in cargo who handle some 1.5 million tonnes of cargo in Europe per year. Additionally, we offer a cargo network of 90 airports including partnerships. Heath, you joined Aviapartner this past February and have already begun making your mark within the company. How would you describe your first months? Heath: My first months at Aviapartner have been dynamic and quite intense as Heath White COO Cargo

What did you focus on initially? Heath: From the start I began focussing on rapidly devising a powerful strategy and philosophy for cargo, and we’re now in the process of putting it into practice it. When I began, the cargo division was more disparate, yet every unit was delivering a strong product and was focussed on quality and accountability. I immediately recognised a massive entrepreneurial spirit, strong market focus and what I have now come to term a “climate of quality” which saturates the network. Thus our vision, which all of our regional managers agreed with, was to create a real cargo team division selling, developing and promoting the European network and all of our formulated products everywhere.

‘Retaining local integrity while adhering to a European approach’
What are some of the challenges you face? Heath: It is clear that we need to strengthen our network drive and share best practices in order to harmonise our base-line approach. We’ve developed a plan to achieve this and our team has adopted it as our common strategy. And what does this strategy comprise? Heath: We aim, for instance, to find a perfect balance in retaining the local integrity of our activities while clearly adhering to a European approach that is consistent across the network. We also clearly aim to excel above our customers’ expectations with regards to quality, accuracy, punctuality, flexibility and dedicated product conception. In terms of operations? Heath: Here we are focussing on building a better network...expansion. We also concentrate on creating new products and entering into larger discussions with organisations such as TAPA, C2K, IAHA, etc. Furthermore, we will continue to streamline our operations while ensuring that they remain highly flexible.

What are your views concerning business development? Heath: Well, we want to grow further so that means winning new business! We are focussing on developing new products (e.g. distribution, special handling, service centres, etc.) and finding ways to sell the network in a variety of forms. Furthermore, we have devised a strong, new, key account management concept called VeryLarge-Co-operations: VLCs, in which we engage with our network clients to strengthen relationships with them both operationally and also in terms of business development. Heath: As a division, we intend to strengthen our position at the main hubs, with Paris being a key target, as well as Frankfurt in order to play a larger role in Germany. I tell you, I’ve been fortunate in my first months of working at Aviapartner in that we’ve already had a few major commercial successes. One significant example is that US Airways has agreed to move all of its European handling to us, covering 13 main online hubs. This concept is singular and the most revolutionary of its kind in the global market. We are managing their handling covering eight countries and are developing a dedicated key account management platform to look after their operational interests and ensure continued development. In essence, we’ve become their operational arm. This is how we see the future of cargo handling. It is for us to transform the market via our strengths, integrity, innovation and execution. We must get close to our customers in order to understand their needs better. I would liken this to climbing to a peak that has never before been summated, and the exhilaration of knowing that you’re getting closer and closer to the top.

Aviapartner also provides cargo handling services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. This station was formerly Aero Groundservices, which was acquired by Aviapartner in April 2007. It is currently the largest station in our cargo network. In 2007, the 550 cargo staff handled 434,000 tonnes of cargo in Amsterdam.

In Toulouse, Aviapartner has handled three daily KLM flights since 3 June. In Nice, KLM switched to Aviapartner Handling on 17 June for their four daily flights, and three KLM flights at Marseille will be added from 30 September. All flights are operated with Fokker 70 or Fokker 100 aircraft. Under the terms of the contract, we carry out all ramp handling and traffic operations for KLM at these airports.

Furthermore, in the event of an accident or any other kind of collision involving the GSE, proveo’s Impact Sensor will be recording vital details such as time, place and name of driver. “Aviapartner opted for the Airport Visualiser because we are convinced that it will help us optimise the utilisation of our GSE fleet. With the increasing oil prices, fuel costs have become a major issue. The Airport Visualiser will help us control our fuel expenses and thus reduce our carbon footprint. Moreover, we are convinced that the system will enable us to minimise the number of accidents and repair costs. While reducing the unnecessary engine hours, we will win on maintenance costs, on expenses for repairs (wear and tear) and of course fuel costs. By identifying excess equipment we should be able to reduce investments and optimise equipment costs in general,” explains Bekaert.
