DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

As someone who values the importance of a safe, calm, and comfortable space to come home to, immersing myself into the design world has always been a dream of mine. To align my passion with work, in order to create spaces that people can feel excited to use. After going through the majority of my formal education in design I have realized how I can take that passion even further and ground all of my decisions in research to create not only aesthetically pleasing spaces but functional one too. I think that successful design can better the experience for the users as well as improve their mental health, and entering the industry I feel that I have such a great opportunity to help people in improving their lives and experiences.

PROFILE My passion for Interior Design all started in my childhood. After my family needed to downsize homes, my mom and i made it a mission to make our rented home still feel like ours. In addition to that, my family loves to spend time at home. We quickly learned the value in having a safe space to come home to no matter what may be going on in our day to day lives. This is what really sparked my passion and lead me to Florida States Interior Architecture & Design Program to further my knowledge regarding my passion.

HARD SKILLS AUTOCAD & REVIT HAND DRAFTING & RENDER

EDUCATION As a senior in the Interior Architecture & Design Program at Florida State, I am looking forward to earning my Bachelors. The program at Florida State has challenged me in many ways that i am super grateful to have experienced. Skills such as my communication, time management, and ability to work with tight deadlines and changing conditions, have prepared me to make the transition from a school setting to the professional world. HOSPITALITY / LONDON HOTEL IN PROGRESS

PROJECT BRIEF Tasked with designing a luxury boutique in Camden, London. Given freedom to decide the clients, design, and hotel type, this is my capstone project at FSU. I am in progress with this project and within the schematic design phase.

LOCATION RESEARCH • Population: 279,516 people • Approximately 100,000 of that population ranges ages 20-39 year old • Known for its multi ethnicity. It has strong Irish, Greek, and Italian influences and populations. The area is creatively and artistically driven and a place for shopping and entertainment. • In Primrose Hill, there are many restaurants and spots to visit and it is not too far from the main tourist part of the borough. This spot will allow for you to get the local experience while also getting to do the typical touristy things that Camden has to offer. Its about a 15 minute walk to the Camden Markets. • Regent’s Canal is another beautiful and quiet part of the area and flows along the stretch from Primrose Hill to the center of Camden Town. • There are three main modes of transportation: Camden Town Tube Station, Camden Road Train Station, & the Gardens Bus.

PROJECT STAKEHOLDERS At the Manor Hotel, it caters towards a few different types of people, but groups that all have one idea in mind, and that is to travel and stay in luxury. Providing the “royal experience” at the hotel will drive the types of clients the hotel looks to host. • The Wealthy Couple - this group would be interested in staying at the hotel as it will provide a luxurious weekend escape filled with great food, drinks, and relaxation. • The Business Men & Women - this is a great spot to stay when on business trips because its outside of the main tourist hustle and bustle, but easily accessible to those spots. As well as having access to great food and a speak easy to entertain business partners. • The Locals - the restaurant and speak easy will provide a great activity for a local Camden resident. • The International Travelers - great for a longer stay as the King Suites will offer space to cook and live in, and will be a great place to stay at to provide the travelers with a local experience.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT During the 18th century in London, the phrase “the bees knees” became increasingly popular. A phrase that meant “the height of cool” or the “best of the best.” Connecting that concept into the design in multiple ways will not only ground decisions but act as inspiration. Implementing a Modern Victorian design style will tie back to the origin of this phrase, as well as serve as connection to its surrounding areas. It also was a very popular and luxurious style that appeals to what is known as the “Upper Crust,” or the upper class. The whole idea of this design is to be inspired by the luxurious parts of life and to give normal people the opportunity to get away and live like royalty.

DESIGN GOALS 1

Implement a design that intrigues the guests upon arriving in the lobby and reception area. With luxurious fabrics and ambient lighting, this will help instantly relax guests.

2

Create a “market” retail space where users can stop in to pick up local food items and goodies, or a cup of coffee and pastries. This will connect the space with its surrounding Camden Market atmosphere.

3

Design a modern Victorian fine dining restaurant and speak easy that allows the stakeholders to get a taste of London while feeling immersed into the culture.

4

Implement architecture forms and style from the Victorian era into the hotel common areas to help transform the space and allow users to feel like they are royalty.

HEALTH CARE / OFFSHORE CLINIC

PROJECT BRIEF Tasked with creating an Outpatient Behavior Healthcare Clinic for children between the ages of 2-18. Specializing in substance abuse and mental health, Offshore was a space where patients and providers could feel at ease within the space. This approximately 12,000 square foot space was mirrored on either side allowing for each specialty to have separate wings.

CONCEPT STATEMENT - EBB & FLOW Ebb and flow is essentially the rise and fall of the tides. This idea will inspire the design of this mental healthcare clinic. People who experience mental health issues, experience a constant ebb and flow in their day to day life. Life is a series of ups and downs, and it is important to be thankful for the low points because not only do they teach us lessons, but they make the ups that much better. Not only does the idea of Ebb and flow symbolize the design relative to the patients experience, but it has a restorative aspect as well. Many studies suggest the benefits of a connection with the outdoors. The concept of ebb and flow will inspire the connection to nature and water in the space and the resilience the patients have along their journey. Ebb and Flow will be implemented into the space in multiple ways. Those being the tranquil feeling and sounds that come along with being nearby the ocean. Another way it will be implemented is the simple and harmonious flow from space to space to make the movement through the space straight forward and painless. The soft edges and movement from waves will also be implemented into the space through the design and furniture, with the use of curvilinear lines and organic forms. Ebb and flow will drive this design from the spatial design to the material selections.

UP

UP

The concept of Ebb & Flow was implemented into the floor plan as the space ebbs and flows. Essentially the placement and organic feel to the floor plan was intentional to not only implement the feeling of the ocean but to also work as a form of wayfinding. By creating various widths in hallways this helps “push” patients though the space.

DESIGN GOALS 1. Help all users of the space feel more comfortable and to make the environment feel less sterile, Implement a monochromatic ocean like palette 2. Help patients feel safe by implementing privacy, positive distractions, and a sense of control within the waiting rooms, exam rooms, and therapy rooms. 3. Help alleviate anxiety in the patients and to make things more efficient for the staff, create a easy to understand floor plan with way finding. 4. Cater towards all ages of patients, design a space that is sophisticated and calming while still playful to the younger eye.

CHECK IN & WAITING AREA

The waiting room and check in are serene and welcoming spaces that help set the tone for the facility upon arrival. The ocean inspired design and sound of the waves can help calm nerves and provide positive distractions. The inset area rugs act as a form of way finding to help “push” users through the space by “ebbing and flowing.”

EXAM ROOM

The neutral but playful design in the exam room allows for the space to still be bright and have lots of access to daylight and artificial light while still incorporating that coastal feel to the space. Positive distractions and choice of seating were implemented to make the patient feel more comfortable.

HALLWAYS The hallways of the facility put the concept of ebb and flow into action with a circulation path that not only fluctuated in width but is characterized by curved and textured walls. Alcoves are placed along the pathway to provide patients with a place of refuge before, during, or after therapy sessions. Dropped ceiling with cove lighting helps reinforce the circulation path and directional flow.

Small Group Therapy

COLOR PALETTE Since the office treats children of all ages it is important for the space to be stimulating and exciting for them to come into. Having more color will allow for a less sterile feel and help it to feel more playful and welcoming, as well as less intimidating. A monochromatic look will also be calming and pleasing. A sophistical coastal design style allows the space to feel like an escape.

CLINICIANS WORKROOM

The clinicians workroom is a coastal getaway for the staff in between appointments. The ocean inspired color palette will help relax the staff. Access to views, as well as greenery will help the staff be more productive. A TV screen is provided for meetings or virtual calls.

ULRICH’S THEORY OF SUPPORTIVE DESIGN In Ulrich’s Theory of Supportive Design he posits that healthcare spaces should not be creating additional stress to the patients. Instead, designers can make choices to help the users feel more comfortable while using the space. These decisions should have positive effects on not only the patients but visitors and staff as well. Three main goals are discussed that are thought to improve wellness of users of the space. A Sense of Control to the physical-social surroundings of the space has been shown to improve the users experience in the space. Humans need to feel in control in situations so implementing things like a remote controlled adjustable bed, control of room temperature, or a garden near by are all things that could make the users feel as if they have more control in the space. Studies have also shown that patients with more Social Support from family or friends tend to be in a better place mentally though out their visit. This same logic applies to employees. It is important to still provide the users a sense of privacy while designing spaces that allow for more social interaction so they do not lose the sense of control. Lastly, Positive Distractions in Physical Environments can help reduce stress and allow users to feel more comfortable. Having enough stimulation without it being overwhelming can benefit the users greatly. Things such as animals, greenery, and water elements tend to have a positive effect on the people using the space.

LARGE GROUP THERAPY SPACES

The large group therapy room is a space where children of all ages can feel welcomed. By incorporating a sophisticated design with playful elements such as a fish tank, wall coverings, and colorful upholstery this space will be successfully allow all users of the space to feel comfortable.

Offshore Behavioral Health Clinic is a space where patients are welcome and encouraged to discuss their feelings. With a calm and ocean like feeling this space will help promote positive feelings and a sense of peace to be vulnerable.

BEYOND THE BOX / WOMENS CENTER

PROJECT BRIEF There are over 24,000 women in Tallahassee that fall below the poverty line. To help women cultivate a brighter future, designers created an interactive floor plan that serves women and their children. In order to provide support to the underserved communities in Tallahassee we must come together as a city to provide them with facilities to promote wellbeing and growth to these communities. The priority of the facility includes supporting women and children of the Tallahassee area through an integrated design of therapy, teaching, wardrobe, and food bank services and spaces. The Tallahassee Women’s Center can be potentially funded by the Leon County Nonprofit Grant Program, Dress for Success, and the Archibald Foundation. This funding will help the facility run for the women to have a safe space to utilize, as well as provide clothing and food for those women in need. TALLAHASSEE WOMEN’S CENTER

CONCEPT STATEMENT Nourish to Flourish is the concept that drives the design of the Tallahassee Womens Center. Just as flowers rely on nutrients, water, and sunlight for growth, human development is dependent on physical and emotional support provided by oneself and others. The natural tendency to seek wellness through the environment, emphasizes the role of the built environment in human health and wellbeing. The center celebrates differences and teaches the women to use those differences as strengths. Biophilic design features will help connect the users to nature, while boosting their productivity and mood. Pastel colors will evoke feelings of femininity, growth, and cleanliness, encouraging women to seek the resources necessary to become independent and self-sufficient. Access to natural light, outdoor views, and effortless circulation patterns will enhance wellbeing and encourage women and children to thrive.

CHARRETTE / THE SISTERS OF FATE

PROJECT BRIEF The FSU Interior Architecture and Design Program puts on an annual charrette group project that consists of teams with members from each cohort. This weekend project kicks off the Spring semester with a unique theme to allow the students to think creatively and outside of the box. This year we were tasked with producing a secret society at FSU that is located in a secret location on campus.

THE SISTERS OF FATE In 1910, three women created a society to uphold tradition, as well as maintain political power over campus when the university began integrating men into the school. Inspired by the Greek Mythology story, “The Three Sisters,” the women referred to their society as The Sisters of Fate. Their ability to pull strings behind the scenes allow them to determine the fate of students, clubs, and organizations on campus. Today, women from different clubs, sororities, and organizations are a part of The Sisters of Fate. A walk through the Greek Garden at night will lead you to the entrance that is hidden in plain sight. To enter you need a key, a symbolic piece of jewelry that has been passed down through generations. Place your key upon the plaque in front of the tree to unlock the hidden passageway that descends into the tree which immerses you into the Greek inspired meeting hall and amphitheater.

You will enter in through the tree at the stair landing. From here you have an overview of the meeting hall and amphitheater. Along the pathway, past the camellia flowers, as you approach the three sisters, a large oak tree stands tall. Place your key on the plaque to be granted access to descend into you fate. EDUCATION / STROZIER LIBRARY

PROJECT BRIEF The stakeholder desires reorganization and innovative reconstruction of the circulation desk for better traffic flow and function. An adjustment to the lighting system is important to provide visual comfort to the users of the space. Comfortable seating throughout the space for the students and faculty that are easy to clean and durable. Way finding design and directional signage as well as improved circulation will also need to be improved to be compliant with the CDC guidelines.

Drawings By: Olivia Zollo

CONCEPT STATEMENT The design of the library will be inspired by the natural elements of an oak tree. Given the magnificent beauty of the oak tree, these types of trees are prominently seen throughout Florida States historical campus and they accentuate the overall charm and appeal of the community. Aspects of nature, such as a natural color scheme, branching curvilinear lines, subtle texture, and sustainable materials, will be implemented into each space to create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for employees and students to function in. The concept of branches will be incorporated into the circulatory pattern and will also represent the unique study routine of every student, where each zone will be defined by a different mode of studying. Warm colors, like green, orange, and red, will be incorporated into signage and way finding to define important spaces such as the lounge, the computer zone, and the tutoring area. Texture will also be integrated into the walls, ceiling, flooring, and furniture to make the library feel relaxed and warm.

Mental Health Zone This Spatial Diagram points out the different zones of the library as well as showing the floor plan. Creating multiple zones that vary in sound were important to allow for the space to be used by a variety of different people. During the research phase most people said this floor was too loud, so adding partitions, acoustical ceilings and walls, and locating quiet zones on one side and louder zones on another allows for a multi-use space.

In addition to the concept of an oak tree driving the design, The Environmental Preference Theory was also a huge factor. The theory states that people tend to prefer their natural environments over a build environment. People process things in their environment and how it can improve their life. They need to make a sense of their environment and how they feel in it. Its thought that people prefer certain areas or spaces because it can give them a grounded and restored feeling. In order to create that feeling in the space, the use of multiple lighting sources as well as natural lighting, natural materials, and greenery. Perspectives Rendered By: Mackenzie Bannatyne

These tree like columns tie in the concept of the oak tree. Using acoustical ceiling panels help control the noise in this space as it is a high traffic area.

Providing the students with an enclosed tutoring area allows for more noise control, as the previous plan had open tutoring. Closing it in will help the student focus better.

WORKPLACE / NOODLES & CO. HQ

PROJECT BRIEF This workplace design in Denver, Colorado was to create a 10,000 sq. ft. office building for Noodles & Company. Noodles is a inclusive fast casual restaurant that serves a variety of noodle dishes from different cultures and dietary needs. Creating a headquarters that was in tune with current social needs, and space for collaboration were priorities for this hybrid styled office.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Noodles & Company strives to create meals that accommodate people with different meal plans and dietary restrictions, as well as cultural diversity in dishes. Noodles & Company also offers a menu that allows their customers to have unique meals catered to their likes and preferences. For that reason, the design will be derived and inspired by the concept of inclusion. It is also important to implement this idea within the workplace since Noodles & Company is working on a hierarchical structure. Ensuring that connection and communication is efficient in the office is a high priority to allow for more efficient workdays as well bridging the gap between the employees and the executive staff. The idea is to celebrate the employees unique and individual traits and create a space that allows for all of them to come together and collaborate as one strong unit. Under this premise, spaces flow from one to another, allowing for meaningful collaboration. Overall, this idea will help the employees to feel that they are all equally valued within the company no matter what the title of their position may be.

PROJECT DESIGN GOALS Environmental Preference Theory

To bring the exterior in the implementation of plants, placing shared work areas near the windows, and a natural color pallet will help bridge the gap between interior and exterior environments.

Proxemics

Having personal zones is critical in shared environments to make people feel more comfortable. Creating a variety of small offices, medium sized shared rooms, and large collaborative spaces will allow for flexibility on working areas.

Hybrid Style Design

Due to COVID-19, working from home has become more popular. Therefore when returning to the office, designing with the feeling of home in mind can make coming to the office more ideal for the users.

Creating Bonds Between the Staff

Capitalize on the tenets of hierarchical structures that work well while fostering new grounds of connection by, creating a collaborative flow in the layout of work zones. Placing departments nearby their corresponding executive will allow for more daily connection.

Light & Color

Utilizing a neutral color scheme with pops of color throughout the departments can help give a sense of identity as well as aid with way finding. Since there are only windows along one side, keeping sight lines clear to allow the natural light to flow throughout the space.

Images All from google, I do not own the rights to them nor did i create them

LEVEL ONE - SPACE PLAN

LEVEL TWO - SPACE PLAN

Implementing the project goals into the space, as well as showing them on the floor plan was important to ensure the clients understood the selections within the space. Utilizing the wood in the majority of the space was to help tie in the exterior to its interior environment, while using carpet in the smaller zones to control sounds. Locating shared spaces along the windows gives everyone access to natural light.

Creating a workplace where employees would enjoy coming back to is a rising issue in our corporate world right now. With people enjoying the flexibility and comfort of working from home it is important to think of creative ways to get the employees interested in coming back. After loads of research in the first phase of this project i decided to create a workplace that was more hybrid style to harbor connection and collaboration. Implementing a more diverse range of areas to work can allow the employees to change up their workspace and not feel locked into a cubicle. Areas such as agile workstations, pick up meeting room, and work cafes, allow users to get more access to natural light, comfortable seating, and the ability to work in teams. The idea behind this design was to allow the users to only need to come in for collaborative types of tasks and do the head down tasks at home if they please. This makes the shift of going back to the office easier and more ideal to the employees.

By keeping the design fresh, clean, and bright, it will allow for a space that people feel more interested in spending their time in. The open design allows the users to not feel trapped into a cubicle design. Introducing a Biophilic design, environmental preference theory, and proxemics all tied into the choices made for this space. Using glass to keep from obstructing sight lines, biophilic design to tie the indoors to the outside, as well as using the bright pops of color make this space comfortable and inviting.

RETAIL / BARE CAFE BY NOODLES

PROJECT BRIEF This three week long conceptual design was created to design a retail prototype restaurant design for Noodles & Company. A new concept and idea for the company called Bare Cafe was pushed in this design to create a healthy cafe serving healthy noodles.

BARE CAFE by Noodles & Company

CONCEPT STATEMENT Evidence suggests that being in nature promotes creativity, grounding, and happiness. In order to incorporate that idea into Bare Cafe, it is characterized by a natural menu that strives for healthy that tastes good. While still keeping the noodle aspect of the company in tact, Bare Cafe will serve healthy pasta substitutes as the base of all the dishes. Bringing in the feeling of the outdoors into the space will allow the users to feel creative, energized, and comfortable. This can be done through the implementation of natural materials, a biophilic design, and natural lighting. The use of curvilinear lines, texture, and contrast will further bring in the sense and feeling of nature and the pure and relaxing feelings it evokes.

A main goal for the space was to have an easy to understand circulation through the space. Having a specific route to get to the build your own counter was important to reduce confusion. Placing the retail section at the end of the cash wrap allows for most customers to pass by the space. Having a separate drink bar keeps people who aren’t getting food from having to wait in a long line.

ELEVATION VIEWS OF THE ORDERING QUEUE

With a concept of nature in mind making this space restorative multi functional space was important to allow all type of people to enjoy the space. Taking on the healthy narrative also appeals to the lifestyle that many residents of Colorado live. The earthy tones help connect the space to the outdoors, as well as make it a calming space to come work, or spend time with friends. Having multiple types of seating options was a priority to fit different kinds of customers.

WORKPLACE / BOOK BINDER STUDIO

PROJECT BRIEF Creating a space for a book binder was the goal for this studio space. With great access to natural light and space, it was important to bring in natural textures and colors to connect the outside with the interior space. This project was created to test our graphic skills by creating a space using hand and digital rendering techniques. This hybrid styled project allowed me to be creative with my work and focus on creating a realistic looking space by emphasizing textures, shadows, and highlights.

Utilizing CAD and Hand Drawing, I created this space, where I then applied some color and texture by hand, and finished it off by adding materials in Photoshop. This project allowed me to combine my skills to create something more successful than one technique used alone.

PROJECT SCOPE Timeline:: 1.5 Months Timeline

Below is the section of the space that shows the kitchenette, bathroom, and admin desk area. This all allows for the user to not need to leave through out the day and have a self sufficient space to work in.

Software: Sketchup, Hand Software: Drawing & Rendering, and Photoshop When: Sophomore Year When: Spring Semester (Remote)

As you can see in the above main perspective, having a large work area with a lot of storage was important as this is a work space. To allow this to be a space the book binder wouldn’t need to leave through out the day, adding a living space, kitchen, and bathroom made this fully functional for the user and its guests.

RESIDENTIAL / ADA ACCESSIBLE

PROJECT BRIEF Located in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia the accessible home for Mr. & Mrs. Williams was created to allow the elderly couple to age in place. The couple enjoys hosting friends and family so large areas for entertainment is a must. Keeping in mind potential disabilities was important to make sure the house would be prepared for any lifestyle changes the couple may face.

The goal in mind with the design was to create a space which allowed for an open floor plan and easy movement. Keeping the house sectioned in private and public areas was also important as the couple enjoyed hosting friends and family in their home.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The space designed for the Williams’s in Atlanta, Georgia will be derived from the concept of antiques. The use of curvilinear and straight lines, as well as texture, and color will all be implemented into the space in an elegant, yet simple way. A large aspect of the design that needs to be taken into consideration is the idea of aging in place. Aesthetically, the space will be calming and minimalistic. A soft color pallet with textures will give this space a cohesive blend. Overall, the users of the space will feel safe, and comfortable in the space for years to come.

Concept: Antiques Clients: Mr. & Mrs. Williams Design Goals: Open floor plan, ADA accessible, textured, comfortable

Material Selection: Natural Finishes, soft and neutral colors, soft textures

The clients are an elderly couple who plan to age in place. Some aspects of design that were important to them were, space for their children and grandchildren to stay over, entertainment space for hosting family and friends, and an area to be used for antiquing and sewing. ADA accessibility is applied through out all areas. Features such as a large bathroom with a roll in shower, and roll under space at sinks are important in the case they may need a wheelchair. Reducing glare, keeping planes at the same level, and neutral colors keep the space from feeling distracting and causing any mobility or visionary issues.

The use of natural tones from the materials such as wood, concretion, and stone, all provide the space with a warm and comfortable space without being too distracting or difficult to navigate. Due to the clients age, it was important to create a space that not only met their aesthetic needs but a space that is safe for them as they age. Having enough room to navigate in a wheel chair was provided as well as clearance space below sinks, in showers, and bedrooms. These features may not be needed at the initial design, but it will allow the couple to age in the home and not need to make the changes later on.

Having an open floor plan not only made it easier for the clients to move around, but also created a create cohesive space for entertaining. The dining and kitchen area allows for seating up to 10 people. The island allows for ample counter space to cook and display food for parties. Keeping textures high and colors neutral the space has an earthy feel that is cohesive to the exterior environment.

RESIDENTIAL / PARIS APARTMENT

PROJECT BRIEF This project was designed to challenge us as students to design the living spaces of this Paris Apartment. Done all by hand, I created this calming environment with a blue toned color pallet. This allowed me to practice and experiment with my hand rendering skills. A floor plan was provided to us so the main task at hand was to create a visually appealing space and focus more on our hand rendering skills than the technical side of things.

The design brings in the classic herringbone wood flooring, as well as tying in wood in other aspects. Using a cool toned blue color pallet this Paris Apartment is a calm and cozy space.

These vignettes showcase some details in the space and show the consistency through the space. The use of the cool toned blue color pallet is used in all the spaces to give a cohesive look as all of these rooms flow into one another.

PROJECT SCOPE Timeline:: 1.5 Months Timeline Techniques Used: Used: Hand Drawing, Colored Pencil, Markers, Watercolor, Pastels When:: Sophomore Year, Spring Semester When

COLOR PALETTE

The design brings in the classic herringbone wood flooring, as well as tying in blue tones and texture. The use of colored pencil and marker allowed me to create the multiple toned flooring which i felt was my most successful graphic aspect in this project.

GRAPHICS / GILCHRIST HALL

PROJECT BRIEF This project in CAD was to test my skills with digital drawings. Utilizing different techniques in CAD, I was able to construct this scaled drawing of a Dorm Hall on Florida States Campus. Gilchrist Hall was built and completed in 1920 as a womens residence hall. The building was named after Brigadier General Albert Waller Gilchrist who served in the Florida Militia during the Spanish-American War, and was Florida’s Governor from 1908-1912.

To the left is an image of the building on FSUs campus. This building is very detailed. To the right is my drawing of the building. To create this drawing we drew based off of an image we took ourselves of the building and used our judgment to scale parts of the building. Being new to CAD this project challenged me, and in the end made me much more comfortable in the program
