GATES INTERNATIONAL OFFICE TEHRAN, IRAN Completed set of construction documents for project.
The 50,000 sq ft, 6th floor design solution for the Bill + Melinda Gates International office was derived from the Persian dance, Qhasemabadi. A traditional dance of the Gilaki people in Northern Iran, the dance reflects the culture’s historical ties to the landscape. The dance further defines the important agricultural role women have within the culture. Qhasemabadi is a warm, energetic, and fluid dance.
Warmth of color, light, and rough textures grounds the design solution. Vibrant, saturated use of color within the space was abstracted from the costumes worn during the dance. Energy has been created through the repetition of shapes + forms, suggesting movement. The energy creates rhythm within the space, which induces visual unity, creates movement and emphasis within the space. Vertical lines give the space sense of strength and stability and contrasting horizontal lines zone the repose spaces within.
33
The project began with a research paper on a Persian dance. From the research, the concept model formed. It is an abstraction of the traditional Persian dance; Qhasemabadi.
Using the image to the left, which shows a traditional formation of the dance. Taking the lines of the human form, the organic forms of the traditional skirts and the lines of the skirts. The concept model is warm, energetic and vibrant much like Qhasemabadi.

BFLY COFFEE, ART AND THEATER NO LOCATION Completed during 2nd year, Fall 2019.
BFLY began with a 60’ x 40’x 40’ envelope with pre-existing structure. The project is imagined to be lodged between buildings and apertures are limited to the north facade.
The program: art gallery, coffee bar, and theater / meeting. BFLY has 3 levels with each program occupying a level. Pushing the art gallery below ground, diminishing chance of light to damage art. The ground level holds the coffee bar and the 3rd level, theater / meeting.
The concept for BFLY came from an exploration of the form and movement of butterflies. Studying and abstracting the way they fly, their takeoff pattern forms a circular path. This form is used through out each level of the design, using the buildings structure to determine the size.
