DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Collecting is a fascinating subject. In a previous publication I edited, Obsession, Compulsion, Collection: On Objects, Display Culture and Interpretation (2004), I wrote on what collecting reveals about ourselves and our culture. The ordering and contextualization of works can be as instructive as the objects themselves. As I wrote, “Through the potential of these and other curatorial and archival practices, the museum is poised to be even more relevant, even more constructive of meaning.” I have been reflecting on this over my first year at the MacKenzie. With the proliferation of new communication technologies, the way we share, receive and contextualize information is changing — and with it our relationships to objects and knowledge. Art galleries and museums are poised at the crux of these shifts to be ever more engaging and central to the world around us. Last year the University of Regina announced the promised donation by Dr. Jacqui Shumiatcher of over 1,000 artworks. To celebrate this landmark gift, along with our decades-long partnership with the University of Regina, the MacKenzie proudly presents Love at First Sight: The Drs. Morris and Jacqui Shumiatcher Art Collection. The MacKenzie collection and other collections feature prominently in a number of our fall and winter programs, some of which are previewed in these pages. September also marks the launch of our new and improved membership program, which now offers more ways to support the MacKenzie — and more benefits to you. We are also excited to offer another season of our Insider Dinner Series — following last year’s very successful Insider Dinner with Wilf Perreault. This is one more way to support the gallery within a fun and convivial atmosphere. For more details, visit our website or Gallery Shop. There are many more ways to be involved—workshops, classes, exhibition tours, and other events. I hope you will explore them in these pages and we look forward to seeing you at the MacKenzie!
