2nd Place MSU ASID Student Competition

1st Place ASID South Central Regional Student Career Day

OBJECTIVE Redesign Howell Hall, an existing building located on Mississippi State University’s campus, to house the new Interior Design Program and the Department of Art’s fundamental courses.

SOLUTION Through reconstruction, the development of a functional, aesthetically pleasing environment provides both units more adequate spaces than the current locations in which they are housed. With the design of individual spaces, the brands of each college unit are strengthened while still developing a sense of campus community.

CONCEPT When campus community exists in its strongest form, it is associated with learning, sharing ideas, and high levels of human engagement. With the Interior Design Program and the foundation courses for the Department of Art relocating to Howell, the College of Architecture, Art, and Design will be situated in a single area on the Mississippi State University campus. The nature of classes in CAAD requires students to spend countless hours in studios working on projects; therefore, the design of Howell Hall centers around community building and the creative stimulation and motivation of the students who study there.

OBJECTIVE Design a patient room of the future using technology to increase safety, streamline worklow for doctors and nurses, ofer room for social activities and families and provide sustainably designed operation solutions.

SOLUTION With an understanding of efective healthcare design, a biophilic design approach intends to promote health and well-being through the integration of nature. The use of technology helps to minimize clutter and streamline the environment and by providing a separate family area within patient rooms, family activities and interaction are encouraged.

CONCEPT Healthcare design is a critical issue that requires unique understanding of the care environment and the processes within this setting. The understanding of individual behavior among the patients, their families, and the care givers, as well as the physical and psychological efects the space provides is needed to improve the healthcare setting. Biophilic Design is based on the theory that human health and well-being has a biologically based need to aďŹƒliate with nature. With a recent trend in sustainability and green building, this patient room design focuses on improving patient health and satisfaction through the combined use of architecture and nature.

OBJECTIVE Composed of interdisciplinary teams, design and create a construction plan for the given building and its interior for the tenancy of an incubator retailer. Work collaboratively to develop a cohesive design that is constructible and considers aspects of LEED.

SOLUTION The cubed market spaces, ceiling detail, product display, and looring maintain the constant design concept of a pixel. Various stalls throughout the space allow for the use of many types and sizes of retailers while still maintaining adequate circulation. Wall and ceiling designs draw the consumer into the space and encourage the exploration of more to come.

CONCEPT In the same way that pixels come together to form an image, aspiring merchants merge together at NEXUS to create the growing retail market of downtown Starkville. The idea of a small, closely-knitted community creating something larger mimics the pixels of an image and is translated throughout the use of a cube shape in the design of the space.
