Greetings,

As we embark on 2024, it brings me immense pleasure to welcome to you to the tenth issue of the biannual MMHS newsletter With our expanding team, MMHS is proud to showcase some of its greatest accomplishments so far, with our broader reach in healthcare helping to diversify knowledge career options.

At MMHS, we believe in the power collaboration and this year, our focus is on creating a space where students can forge new connections, discover shared passions, passions they didn’t know they had, and work together to enhance both academic and professional journeys

In our ever expanding pursuit of mentorship and guidance, we are

thrilled to announce the start of our PRISM mentorship program, kicking off this year hosting MD and DDS students as mentors in hopes of kindling connections with undergraduate students that will promote growth. This is one achievement amongst many strides we have made as a team thus far this year. Furthering our team’s unwavering commitment to presenting opportunity through diversity in healthcare

This newsletter will showcase the multitude of student opportunities that have been and will be provided through means of our upcoming events and initiatives

Naturopathy Webinar - ND

Surgical Skills Workshop WinterEvents

Have you ever wondered what a career in Naturopathy entails? Do you have an interest in holistic well-being or alternative medicine? Look no further than MMHS’s Naturopathy Webinar featuring esteemed Dr. Rachael Onah!

Join as we delve into the realms of nutrition, exercise, sleep, and wellness. All aimed in nurturing your mind, body, and spirit. Our first ever Naturopathy webinar, held online on January 29th, 2024 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm EST in person, hosted about 15 attendees. Don’t miss out on future exclusive opportunities to learn about taking a more holistic approach to life.

Are you interested in wound repair and learning one of the basics of healthcare? Suturing techniques are useful in primary and urgent care settings across healthcare.

On February 1st, 2024, 6:00 - 8:00 pm EST MMHS hosted an in-person suturing workshop in partnership with the American University of Antigua to hone basic skills. We provided students with their own suturing kits as we are taken through the processes involved in the wound repair process.

Guided through these processes with an experienced RN, Warren, over 40 students had the opportunity to see experts in the act, and have the chance to get feedback on their own work, and ask questions afterwards.

International Medical School Fair - IMSF

Are you considering medical school?

Eager to learn more about the application and admissions process? Not sure whether you’d like to attend domestically or abroad? If so, you’ll be sure to enjoy our very first International Medical School Fair! Proudly hosted by MMHS in partnership with IMSF, this event is your golden opportunity to gain firsthand international school reps all in one place at once.

On March 5th, 2024, our Fair, running from 10 am to 3 pm EST in the McMaster Student Centre atrium, hosted over 300 walkthrough attendees!

Welcoming 18 medical, veterinary, naturopathic and many more schools from Australia, Canada, USA, the Caribbeans, amongst others. And our gracious sponsors from Prep101 and The Princeton Review.

Bioethics Discussion

Curious about how dilemma unfolds in healthcare? What questions will be like on the CASPER or in interviews? If so, the Bioethics Discussion is the place for you. An enriching session that delved into fundamental ethical issues faced by healthcare professionals.

On February 26th, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, MMHS hosted an in-person CASPER themed bioethics discussion in partnership with Bob Parke. A distinguished Bioethicist at the University of Toronto, Bioethics consultant at the Humber River Regional Hospital, a valued member of the Clinical Advisory Committee at the Ontario Palliative Care Network (OPCN), and an understudy to famous Bioethicist Dr. Philip Hébert.

With over 30 attendees having the chance to navigate challenging CASPER-like case studies and enhance their understanding of bioethics, through perspective from an experienced bioethicist.

Dental School Information Night - Western + NYU

Dreaming of a future as a dentist? Not sure what the application entails? Want more information on what schools out there are looking for in future applicants? Then the dental school admissions panel is the event for you!

On March 14th, 2024 from 4 to 5:30 pm

EST, MMHS had the chance to host dental school admissions officers online Affording students the opportunity to ask and have questions answered in real time about research, GPAs, DAT/CASPER scores, interview processes, specializations, and so much more!

MMHS’s panel included two admissions officers from Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University and one from NYU College of Dentistry, hosting about 30 attendees from McMaster.

Transition to the Field of Pharmacy

Considering a path in pharmacy? Want tips and tricks on your application, but don’t know where to go? Want to connect with current students in the program? If you answered yes to any of these questions then the Pharmacy Student Panel is the event for you!

Dive into invaluable insights at our panel featuring current PharmD students, an enriching experience for students aspiring to pursue a career in Pharmacy. This year, on March 19th, 2024, from 6:00-7:30 pm EST, MMHS hosted the first ever pharmacy panel online, welcoming more than 20 attendees

PRISM-MentorshipProgram

Prepare for a transformative year with MMHS as we kickstart PRISM, our PreHealth Mentorship Program meticulously designed to guide aspiring healthcare professionals. PRISM offers students an exclusive opportunity to receive mentorship from individuals currently pursuing professional degrees in Medicine or Dentistry. We recognize the complexities of navigating a healthcare career, particularly for those impacted by financial, medical, or socio-cultural barriers, as well as historically underrepresented groups.
