Audioscript PRESENTER: Next week another series of the number one TV hospital drama House MD begins. We thought it was about time to learn more about Hugh Laurie, the actor who plays the part of TV’s most famous doctor, Gregory House. And what we discovered is that Hugh Laurie himself is a fascinating character. Here to tell us about him is TV critic Stephanie Palmer. Stephanie, first of all, tell us where Hugh Laurie is from. WOMAN: That’s actually an interesting question, Frank. Of course, House MD is an American series, and Dr House is American, but Hugh Laurie is in fact from England. He was born in Oxford and studied at Cambridge University. That’s where he started acting. But it’s funny because his American accent is very impressive. The producer really wanted an American actor to be Dr House. When he gave Laurie the job, he had no idea that he was British. It was only later that he found out! PRESENTER: I’ve heard that some Americans who watch the programme also think he’s American, don’t they? WOMAN: That’s right. PRESENTER: At the moment, Hugh Laurie is the best paid actor on US TV, isn’t he?
WOMAN: Yeah. They say that he gets $400,000 for each episode of House MD. PRESENTER: That’s a LOT of money! WOMAN: Hmm. In fact, in real life Hugh Laurie’s dad was a doctor. Laurie says he finds it strange that they pay him so much to pretend to be a doctor but his dad didn’t make much money being a real doctor. PRESENTER: He is a great actor, though, isn’t he? WOMAN: Oh, yes. Popular with the public, definitely. And he’s won two Golden Globes, and in the People’s Choice Awards, he’s been the favourite male TV star, the favourite TV drama actor, and of course the favourite TV doctor. PRESENTER: And apart from acting, he has other talents, doesn’t he? WOMAN: He’s a very good musician. He can play the piano, guitar, drums, saxophone … He loves playing blues and he’s even made a CD, which has sold really well in many different countries. PRESENTER: Is it true that he’s written a book too? Is it an autobiography or something? WOMAN: He has written a book, but it’s a novel. I think it’s a sort of comic thriller. That’s sold quite well too. PRESENTER: It doesn’t seem fair that one person can be good at so many different things, does it? WOMAN: Well, apart from anything else, I don’t know how he finds the time! PRESENTER: Thanks, Stephanie. Make sure YOU all find time next week to see the latest series of House. That’s Wednesday at 9 pm only on THIS channel. Don’t miss it! Key 1 Dr House is an American series. 2 From Oxford, England. 3 Hugh Laurie studied at Cambridge University. 4 He was supprised to find out that Hugh Laurie was British. 5 They say that he gets $400,000 for each episode of House MD. 6 Hugh Laurie’s dad was a doctor. 7 They pay him so much to pretend to be a doctor but his dad didn’t make much money being a real doctor. 8 He loves playing blues. 9 He has written a book - a novel. 10 On Wednesday at 9 pm. 8 In pairs, students take turns to ask and answer the questions.
