Famous romances
Literature: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Warmer Ask students to think about famous plays they know and who wrote them. They can be plays from their own country or from around the world. Ask if they know the name of any famous English playwrights. If students mention William Shakespeare, ask them to say what they know about him.
Cultural information William ll Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language. His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway and they had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer and part-owner of a theatre company. He retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later.
MEGAN: Well, the Capulets and the Montagues start fighting again, but Romeo wants to stop them, now that he’s married to Juliet. But they kill his friend and he’s so angry that he kills a Capulet. And so he has to leave the city. Meanwhile, Juliet’s dad says she has to marry a man called Paris. BEN: But she’s already married! MEGAN: Yeah, but her dad doesn’t know that, does he, remember? And she can’t tell him because Romeo is a Montague and she’s afraid of what her dad would do. BEN: So then what? MEGAN: The Friar gives Juliet something to drink – a special potion. The potion is to make Juliet sleep, but people will think that she’s dead. The plan is that when her family thinks she’s dead, the Friar will take her away to be with Romeo. There’s a problem, though. BEN: What’s that? MEGAN: When everybody starts saying that Juliet is dead, Romeo thinks it’s true. He’s so sad that he kills himself, with poison. BEN: Is that the end? MEGAN: No, it gets worse. Juliet wakes up. She sees that Romeo is dead. She doesn’t want to live without him so she kills herself with a knife. BEN: So in the end they both die. What a disaster! I’m glad I’ve never fallen in love. Sounds awful! MEGAN: Oh, honestly! 10
Inside information Students read the information about William Shakespeare. 6 Students look at the pictures and decide in which picture(s) they can see each object, person or action. 7 In pairs, students discuss what they think is happening in each picture. Elicit suggestions from each pair. 8 With their partner, students put the pictures in the correct order. Tell them if they aren’t sure, they can guess. 9

Audioscript BEN: Come on, Megan. You said you were going to help me with my homework. I’ve got to write the story of Romeo and Juliet in a page. MEGAN: OK. But you have read it, haven’t you, Ben? BEN: Yeah, sort of, but it was some time ago. I can’t remember much about it. Well, I remember it starts with two families that are always fighting. MEGAN: The Montagues and the Capulets. BEN: Yeah, the Montagues and the Capulets, that’s it. And Romeo is a Capulet. MEGAN: No, Ben, he’s a Montague. BEN: Right, Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. But they fall in love when they meet. Do they know that they’re from these two families that are fighting? MEGAN: No, they don’t. Not at first. But when they do, it’s too late because they’re totally in love with each other. So, anyway, when they fall in love, Romeo goes to see a priest, Friar Lawrence, and he asks the priest to marry him and Juliet. BEN: And does he? Do they get married so quickly? MEGAN: Yes, they do. But it’s a secret. Nobody knows except them and Friar Lawrence. BEN: But why do they get married so quickly? MEGAN: Derr. It’s called love, Ben. You wouldn’t understand. BEN: No, I suppose I wouldn’t. Anyway, then what happens?

11 In pairs, students tell the story of Romeo and Juliet using the pictures to help them. Remind students that it is natural to use the present tense to tell a story. Suggested answer There are two important families that are always fighting: the Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. The problem is that they fall in love when they meet and they don’t know that their families are enemies. When they find out, it’s too late because they’re already in love. Romeo goes to see a priest, Friar Lawrence, and he asks the priest to marry him and Juliet in secret. Then the Capulets and the Montagues start fighting again and they kill Romeo’s friend. He’s so angry that he kills a Capulet and has to leave the city. Meanwhile, Juliet’s dad says she has to marry a man called Paris. Her dad doesn’t know Juliet has already married Romeo. The Friar gives Juliet a special potion so that people think that she’s dead and the Friar can take her to Romeo. But Romeo thinks Juliet is really dead. He’s so sad that he kills himself with poison. Then Juliet wakes up, sees that Romeo is dead and kills herself with a knife. 12 What about you? In pairs, students discuss the questions. Draw attention to the model dialogue for question 1. Ask different students to share their thoughts with the class. Suggested answer 2 Romeo and Juliet is still famous today because it is a universal love story that everyone can relate to. Teacher’s Resesource Multi-ROM: See Unit 8 CLIL worksheet The Royal Family.
