Cultural information S Seventy per cent of the Australian mainland is classified as semi-arid, arid or desert. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world and Australia has almost one fifth of the world’s reefs. Captain James Cook (1728–79), was a British explorer who achieved the first European contact with the east coast of Australia. Britain later decided to use the land as a place to send criminals as a punishment, so the majority of people who first came to the country were convicts. When European explorers first saw kangaroos, they asked a native Australian (aborigine) what they were called. He replied ‘kangaroo’, meaning ‘I don’t understand’. The explorers thought this was the animal’s name! The ‘didgeridoo’ is possibly the world’s oldest musical instrument. It is a wind instrument originally found in Arnhem Land, Northern Australia.
