Machu Picchu Machu Picchu is an old Inca city in Peru in South America. The great conqueror and builder, Pachacuti Inca, probably built the city in the 15th century. The Incas were native South American people and they ruled a big empire on the west coast of South America. The Incas abandoned Machu Picchu some time in the 16th century. Hiram Bingham, an American explorer, rediscovered the Lost City of Machu Picchu in 1911.
