„A desert island – let’s go!” Type of activity: individual work/pair work/group work Focus: vocabulary connected with describing places, ways of spending free time, speaking/ reading/writing New vocabulary: a desert island, uninhabited, to build a shelter, to be populated, nature reserves, protected species, paradise, natural topography, volcanoes, a castaway, to check resources, tough weather, a shore, to calm down. Level: pre-intermediate/intermediate Time: 45 minutes Preparation: a copy of the worksheet “A desert island – let’s go!” for each student Procedure:

Exercise 4

(5 min)

Key: to build a shelter, to start a fire, to calm down, to check resources, to look for water a desert island, weather conditions, active volcanoes, tough weather, Pacific ocean Exercise 5

(10 – 15 min)

“A message in a bottle” Explain to the students that they are going to write a short message. Ask them to read the sample answer first. The text should be about 60–80 words. If you run out of time, this activity may be done at home as individual homework. Good luck:)

Exercise 1 – warm-up (10 min)

Write on the whiteboard “A desert island”. Ask the students to think of any associations they have with a desert island. Write some of the ideas you can hear (sample answers: to survive, survival, a shipwreck, a plane crash, a boat, stormy weather, to look for shelter, to start a fire, to look for help, etc.). Then hand out the worksheets and ask the students to read Exercise 1. When they have finished, the students may share their opinions with other group members. Exercise 2

(10 min)

Ask the students to read about desert islands and answer the T/F questions under the text. If necessary pre-teach new words (as listed above). Key: a. T b. T c. F d. F e. T Exercise 3

(5 min)

Ask the students to read the instructions in Exercise 3 Their task is to think of the order of activities they should do when they are on a desert island. When they have finished, ask them to share their ideas with other group members.
