Teacher’s Notes Father’s Day Letter Type of activity: speaking, writing Focus: vocabulary: everyday and leisure time activities Level/age group: A1 Time: 15–30 min Preparation: Make one copy of each of the flashcards. Make one copy of the Worksheet per student and cut up as indicated. 1. Show the students one of the flashcards and elicit the idea that it features a father and a child (son, daughter). 2. Show the students each of the flashcards in turn and elicit and/or teach the activities that the fathers and children are doing. Put the vocabulary on the board. An example list could be: go cycling have fun use the Internet watch films on DVD play computer games go shopping fly a kite go out to play spend time outside

3. Ask the students to give you examples of other ways in which they spend time with their dads. Add to the list. 4. Tell the students that they are going to write a letter to their dads for Father’s Day in which they will list the fun activities that they do with them. Give out the worksheets. Draw the students’ attention to the beginning of the letter, and explain what ‘you rock’ means. 5. On the board, write the sentence patterns “You ____ with me”. and “We ___ together”. and tell the students that they need to complete the letter with sentences like this, mentioning the activities that they do with their dads. Monitor and help the students as necessary as they complete the task. 6. When the letters are finished, ask the students to sign them with their names. If they want, they can read them out to the class. The students then take the letters home as Father’s Day presents for their dads. Extension: Ask the students to memorise the letters and encourage them to recite the list as they give the letters to their fathers.
