Teacher’s Notes Is Christmas always white? Type of activity: individual work/pair work Focus: vocabulary connected with Christmas traditions all over the world, describing preferences, listening/speaking/reading/writing Level: intermediate Time: 45 minutes Preparation: Make a copy of the worksheet, “Is Christmas always white?” for each student Procedure: 1. Ask the students to look at Exercise 1. In pairs ask them to discuss different seasons of the year and name. typical holidays for each season. (5 minutes) 2. Write „White Christmas?” on the whiteboard. Encourage the students to brainstorm about what comes into their minds when they hear this expression. Revise vocabulary connected with Christmas, possibly introducing new words/ expressions if necessary. Make a list of different activities, names of food and other traditions which are typical for Christmas time, not only in Poland but also in other countries. (5 minutes) 3. Explain to the students that now each student will read the text “Is Christmas always white?” about Christmas traditions in Australia and New Zealand. Give them enough time to read the text twice. (5 minutes)
5. Ask the students to do Exercises 3 and 4. Make sure that they understand all of the words (5 minutes) key: Exercise 3: barbecue food, dinner outside, going to the beach, singing carols, cold dishes key: Exercise 4: a. multicultural, b. average, centigrade c. meat, potatoes, pudding d. sand, e. Boxing Day, dive 6. Explain to the students that they are going to work in pairs and prepare a puzzle for one another (Exercise 5) Ask them to think of one Christmas dish that they like most and ask them to prepare a description of it. In pairs their task is to describe the dish so that their partner guesses what it is, and then they should swap. (5 minutes) 7. Writing an informal letter (Exercise 6) optional (15 minutes)
Explain that now the students will prepare an informal letter describing Christmas traditions in their families for their pen friend in Australia. Make sure that they are familiar with the format of an informal letter as well as common phrases and expressions.
If you run out of time, this activity may be done at home as individual homework.
