Teacher’s Notes Do you want to be a volunteer? Type of activity: individual work/ pair work/group work Focus: expanding vocabulary connected with voluntary jobs/education, presenting one’s views, explaining choices Level: intermediate and higher Time: 45 minutes Preparation: a copy of „Do you want to be a volunteer?” worksheet for each student, large sheets of paper (1 for each group of 3–4 students), crayons, paints, etc. Procedure: 1. Warm-up activity: write „Volunteer jobs” on the whiteboard. Encourage your students to brainstorm about possible jobs for volunteers. If necessary you can write some of the answers on the board and pre-teach some more vocabulary connected with the topic. Try to come up with some ideas for volunteer jobs that relate to your students’ neighbourhood or wider environment. (10 minutes)
4. Ask the students to come back to their seats and to share some of their ideas with the group. If they have come up with some other types of volunteer jobs, write them on the whiteboard and elicit more information from students. If necessary, write some new words/names on the board. (5 minutes) 5. Ask the students to work in small groups of 3–4. Their task is to make a poster encouraging young people to join one of the charity organisations and work as volunteers. First, ask them to make a plan – name of the organisation, type of activity and possible ways to encourage people to join in. They may use all techniques they want – they may draw, paint or use images cut out from magazines/newspapers. If you run out of time, this activity may be done as homework. (15 minutes)
2. Hand out the „Do you want to be a volunteer?” questionnaire (Worksheet 1) to each student. First ask them to think about their preferences and tick the activities which they choose for themselves. (5 minutes) 3. After the students have completed the questionnaire for themselves ask them to exchange information in pairs. Ask the students to go around the classroom and interview at least three people. Encourage them to explain their choices, e.g. by saying „I would like to work for WOŚP because ...” (10 minutes)
