3 Vocabulary

• Ask the students whether they have ever had a fire in their kitchen. You could also discuss how to avoid kitchen fires and general safety in the home. • In pairs, students look at the list in the box and make sentences using should or shouldn’t. Point out that a tick means do and a cross means don’t. • On their own, students then use their sentences to write a paragraph about how to survive a kitchen fire, using the texts in Activity 1 to help them. • Note: The writing stage of this activity could be set for homework.

Suggested answer You should turn off the heat immediately. You shouldn’t throw water on it and you shouldn’t try to put the fire out. Instead, you should get out of the kitchen as quickly as you can and you should close the door behind you. Once you are outsidethe house, you should phone the fire service.
