Teacher’s notes “Living a healthy life” Type of activity: individual work/pair work/group work Focus: vocabulary connected with healthy lifestyles, ways of spending free time, speaking/reading/ writing New vocabulary: waste of time, healthy living, lifestyles, proper diet, to rise, as a matter of fact, towards, however, research, to indicate, to recover, to concentrate, to feel relaxed, to lower the risk, diseases, to count, to surf the Internet. Level: pre-intermediate/intermediate Preparation: One copy of the worksheet “Living a healthy life” for each student Procedure: (3 min)

Hand out the worksheets and ask the students to read Exercise 1. The students work in pairs and try to find answers to the questions. When they have finished, elicit some of the answers from them. Exercise 2

Key: waste of time, healthy living, proper diet, serious diseases, heart problems to have a proper diet, to get enough sleep, to feel relaxed, to play computer games, to surf the Internet (5 min)

Ask the students to read the questionnaire and choose the best answer for themselves. The students then count up their points and read the interpretation. Exercise 5

Write on the whiteboard “A healthy life”. Ask the students to think of any associations that they have with a healthy life and what it means to them. Write some of the ideas you hear (sample answers: healthy food, sports, relaxation, good sleep, running, etc.) and discuss them briefly with the group. Exercise 1

Ask the students to match the words in the neighbouring columns.

Ask the students to think about their lifestyles. Explain that they are going to finish the sentences. When they have finished, ask them to work in pairs and exchange some of their ideas. Exercise 6

(10 min)

Explain to the students that they are going to write a short leaflet giving information about a healthy lifestyle. Ask them to prepare a list of points to include in the leaflet. Make sure that they are familiar with the layout and the language used in the leaflet. The text should be about 80–120 words. If you run out of time, this activity may be done at home as individual homework.

Ask the students to read the text and answer the T/F questions under the text. If necessary, pre-teach new words (as listed above). Key: a. F b. F c. T d. F e. T f. F
