Teacher’s Notes Build your own town Type of activity: individual work/ pair work/group work Focus: vocabulary connected with describing places, giving directions and prepositions of place (next to, behind, in front of, etc.), there is/there are expressions, speaking / listening / reading / writing practice Level: pre-intermediate Time: 45 minutes Preparation: some blank sheets of paper, some large sheets of paper (1 for each group of 3–4 students) pencils/crayons Procedure: 1. Warm-up: write „My town/city” on the whiteboard. Encourage the students to brainstorm about places we can find in every town/city. Revise vocabulary that has been used previously, and possibly introduce new words/expressions if necessary (e.g. a gas station, a univeristy, a café, a restaurant, an art gallery, a stadium, a playground, etc.) Make a list of different places in the town/city on the whiteboard. (5 minutes) 2. Explain to the students that now each student will build their imaginary town/city. Ask the students to gather at least six places they would like to have in their town/city. Each student draws his/her own map so that the other students can’t see it. (5 minutes)

3. In pairs, the students exchange information about places in their towns/cities. They elicit information from one another and try to draw the same map as their partner has. Sample questions/answers will be: – Is there a museum in your town? – No, there isn’t. – Is there an art gallery? – Yes, there is an art gallery right in the centre. – Is there a park next to an art gallery? – Yes, the park is on the right. The students ask questions/give answers in turns. Then they compare their maps and discuss whether they are correct. (10 minutes) 4. “Our town/city” – making a poster Explain that now the students will prepare a poster about their neighbourhood. They may use real information or design an imaginary town/ city. They work in groups of 3–4 students and each of them describes one place in the town. If necessary, you may write a sample description on the whiteboard. (e.g., In our town there is a castle. It’s very old and has a very big gate. There is a bridge near the castle.) If you run out of time, this activity may be done at home as individual work or pair work.
