Teacher’s notes “Lazy Sundays”

Type of activity: individual work/pair work/group work Focus: vocabulary connected with hobbies and pastimes, speaking/reading/writing Level: pre-intermediate Time: 45 minutes Preparation: a copy of the worksheet, “Lazy Sundays” for each student Procedure:

TASK 4

(5–10 minutes)

Explain to the students that they are now going to fill in the “Lazy Sundays” form in pairs. When they have finished, ask them to share their ideas with the rest of the group. TASK 5

Explain to the students that they are going to write about one hobby. The word limit is 80–100 words. Good luck :)

WARM-UP

(5 min)

Write on the whiteboard “Hobby?”. Ask the students to think of any associations they have with hobbies. Write some of the ideas they give (sample answers: reading books, computer games, football, tennis, meeting friends, singing, playing in a band, etc.). Ask the students to exchange information in pairs. Explain that you are going to read about different hobbies in the next exercise. TASK 1

(10 min)

Hand out the worksheet. Ask the students to read about different hobbies and answer the T/F questions under the text. Key: 1. F 2. T 3. F 4. T 5. F TASK 2

(5 min)

Ask the students to match the words in the neighbouring columns. Key: birdwatching, scrapbooking, window shopping, autograph collecting, trainspotting TASK 3

(10 min)

Ask the students to read the list of hobbies and pastimes. Ask them to work in pairs – each person has to describe one hobby without actually naming it, e.g.: – You can do it in the morning or in the afternoon. It’s good for your health. You need a special costume to do this. You can do it in winter or in summer. You may use special glasses to protect your eyes. – Is it swimming? – Yes!
