Teacher’s notes Winter festivals worldwide Type of activity: individual work/group work

Task 4

Focus: vocabulary connected with celebrating, winter festivals, speaking/reading/writing

Ask the students to read the text “Winter festivals worldwide” again and finish the sentences.

New vocabulary: historical events, candles, oil-based, to light, a Jewish menorah, doughnuts, to place boots on windowsills, fireplace, to gather, to symbolise, basic values, unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economic purpose, creativity, faith, family reunion.

Sample answers:

Level: pre-intermediate/intermediate

(5 min)

a. A traditional Jewish menorah has nine candles. b. On Saint Nicholas’ Day, children get small gifts. c. Kwanzaa is celebrated in Africa and other countries where African Americans live.

Time: 45 minutes

d. During New Year celebrations in China, many people wear red clothes.

Preparation: a copy of the worksheet “Winter festivals” for each student

e. On lantern day, people carry lanterns to temples and in street parades.

Task 5

Warm-up

(3 min)

Write on the whiteboard “Winter festivals?” Ask the students to think of any associations that they have with a winter festival and what it means to them. Write some of the ideas you can hear (sample answers: Saint Nicholas’ Day, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, etc.). Explain that the students are going to read about other winter festivals around the world. Task 1

(5 min)

Hand out the worksheets and ask the students to read Task 1. The students work in pairs and try to find answers to the questions. When they have finished, elicit some of the answers from them. Task 2

(10 min)

Ask the students to read the text and answer the T/F questions under the text. If necessary, pre-teach new words (as listed above). KEY a. T

(10 min)

Explain to the students that they are going to work in groups of four. Each student will play one role, each from a different country – Israel, Sweden, Tanzania, China. The students’ task will be to introduce typical winter festivals in their countries as listed in Task 5. They should refer to text presented in Task 2. Task 6

(10 min)

Explain to the students that they are going to prepare a poster giving information about winter festivals in different countries. Ask them to prepare a list of points to be included in the poster. Also encourage your students to make their posters more interesting by adding some photos and possibly finding some information about a given festival at home. Make sure that the students are familiar with the layout and the language used in the poster. If you run out of time, this activity may be done at home as individual homework.

Ask the students to match the words in the neighbouring columns. KEY to play games, to get presents, to sing songs, to exchange gifts, to decorate homes
