A York, founded by the Romans in 71 AD, offers a lot of historic attractions. The most famous of them is York Minster, a wonderful cathedral famous for stained-glass windows. There’s also a beautiful walled old town. If you’re not a history lover, there are other attractions, such as the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. York has a lot to offer. In fact, it was voted a European Tourism City of the Year 2007. B Aberdeen is Scotland’s third biggest city. Dear Mr Wright, I am writing to apply for the position of part-time Assistant at the City Tourist Information Centre, which was recently advertised in the ‘Liverpool Daily News’ . I am very interested in this job because I hope to do a degree in tourism in the future. I already have some experience in the area because last summer I worked as an assistant tour guide in the city centre, which I really enjoyed. I am hard-working and reliable, and I enjoy working with people. I also speak some French and German. I enclose my CV. I would be available to work on Saturdays or Sundays. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely,

She explained that this makes us believe it’s happening every day. She told me that couples like the actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston (10) are / have been / had been together for more than 20 years. But she explained that readers aren’t interested in happy news. I asked her (11) what meant / what she meant / what did she mean and she told me that her readers (12) have told her / have told to her / told to her they prefer to read about divorces than weddings. Newton is famous as the man who realised that gravity was at work when he was hit on the head by an apple falling from a tree. This story may be a legend, but in 1687 he published ‘Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica’ (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) which showed that gravity is a universal force. Sir Isaac Newton was one of the greatest scientists of all time. He was born in 1643 and he studied at Cambridge University, where he later became professor of mathematics.

c

d

He was also famous for his bad temper and eccentricities in later life, but he made many other important contributions to science before his death in 1727. His interests were very wide and from the mid 1660s he studied not only mathematics, but also physics and astronomy. He studied the composition of light and colours and he developed a powerful telescope to study the stars.

It was traditionally known for its two universities, but nowadays it is considered one of the most developing cities in Britain. After oil was discovered in the North Sea, Aberdeen has become Europe’s oil industry capital, with a huge seaport and the second largest heliport in the world.

I think it is important to be fashionable. It’s good to keep up to date with the latest things. Every generation has its own style and that’s important – it’s part of our identity.

Lots of cheap fashion items on sale in shops have been manufactured using child labour. The average American woman spends $12,000 – $15,000 a year on hair and beauty products. Many shops offer ‘fast fashion’ with clothes that are fashionable but not designed to last. Zara, the Spanish retail chain, spends absolutely nothing on advertising.

a) Very high tides

Although the Sun’s gravity is much stronger than the gravitational force of the Moon, in fact, it is the Moon which has the greater effect on the Earth’s tides because it is nearer to the Earth. But both the Sun and Moon affect the tides.

Gravity and its effects on the tides The Earth orbits the Sun approximately every 365 days and the Moon orbits the Earth approximately every 27 days. It is gravity which keeps the Earth and Moon in their orbits, but gravity is also what affects the tides.

Analysis of ocean movements and tides is very complex because oceans vary in depth and shape, and every coastline around the world is unique. This means that some places have two tides a day and some only one, while other places have no visible tide at all.

We don’t put a comma if the consequence comes first. Many places will be in danger if the sea level continues to rise. We don’t use will or would in the If clause. We use the third conditional to talk about situations that happened in the past and their imaginary consequences. If I had known that the land used for cattle was destroying the rainforest, I would have become a vegetarian years ago. To form third conditional sentences we use: If + subject + past perfect for the situation, and subject + would have/wouldn’t have + past participle for the consequence.

We use the first conditional to talk about possible situations and their consequences. We use the second conditional to talk about imaginary situations and their consequences. Compare: If the sea level continues to rise, many places will be in danger. (The sea level is rising. It’s possible that it will continue to rise.) If the Thames Barrier failed, it would be a real disaster. (The Thames Barrier hasn’t failed. We are imagining that it has.) To form first conditional sentences we use: If + subject + present simple for the situation, and subject + will/won’t + infinitive without to for the consequence. To form second conditional sentences we use: If + subject + past simple for the situation, and subject + would/wouldn’t + infinitive without to for the consequence.
