SUPERCUT SCISSORS The Supercut Advantage All Supercut Scissors are expertly manufactured from the highest quality stainless steel. The result is a sigificantly sharper instrument with super fine precision capabilities, making them ideal for a variety of surgical procedures. 1. What are Supercut Scissors ? Supercut Scissors offer unrivalled quality and cutting ability and are “sharper” than conventional scissors. The cutting blade is “razor-edged”. 2. Why Supercut Scissors are better than the ordinary scissors? A specially designed razor-sharp upper blade edge that cuts effortlessly through tissue. combined with a lower blade having micro serrations to hold and prevent tissue slippage make these scissors ideal for gripping tissue and cutting interproximally. 3. What are their other advantages? • • • •
Super Cut Scissors with razor edge + micro serrations ensure extremely controlled cutting in difficult areas during surgery. They cut their way forward more accurately. These scissors supersede because of their ability to cut with extreme precision right down to the tip of the blades. Literally speaking, the cutting edges obey the hands and mind of the surgeon most precisely. The cutting margins/ edges are honed to eliminate any traumatisation of the tissues during cutting action, by applying special custom-made technology.
For easy identification all Hipp and Armo Supercut Scissors have black ring handles.

Lightweight • Corrosion-proof aluminium - The container box is made of a high quality aluminum alloy with an anodized surface. • The extremely low weight of the aluminum makes each container significantly lighter than stainless steel. • Physical properties such as a high heat storage capacity and good thermal conductivity guarantee the best drying results.
Steam Penetrable - Bacterial Barrier • Perforated lid and bottom configuration to allow excellent steam penetration and flow. • Bacteria filter inserts allow steam to enter and leave freely but excludes bacteria. • Bacteria filter choice of either heavy duty re-usable textile or disposable paper with sterilisation indicator.
IdenƟficaƟon • Label insert slots on both sides of container for easy set iden fica on. • Op onal sterility indicator labelling safety system that makes sterility verifica on prior to the surgery. Lets you verify from outside whether container contents have been properly sterilised.
Cliplock Lid • Safety feature that keeps lid securely closed during sterlisa on and storage. • Assists in maintaining the sterility of container contents during transport and storage. • Tamper evident.

Veterinary Instrument Kits Bydand Veterinary Kits have been developed through the guidance of Veterinary professionals and wholesalers. Purchasing instruments in the form of pre-assembled kits helps to take out some of the guesswork involved in the instrument selection process. These kits are designed for convenience and are available at a significant saving versus purchasing instruments on an individual basis. These kits are available in up to three different grades. We also recognise that it is still preferrable to purchase some instruments based on personal preference and that is the reason why we have omitted needle holders from being included in any of our kits, with the exception of our ophthalmic kits.

62 INSTRUMENT CARE Introduction These instructions are intended as general guidance for cleaning and sterilisation of Bydand reusable surgical instruments. It is important to recognise that equipment, operators, cleaning agents and procedures all have a contribution to the efficacy of instrument processing. In general there are two methods for cleaning instruments : a “Manual” method and an “Automated” method. Whenever possible Automated method should be utilised. Automated cleaning process using an Automated Washer-Disinfector is more reproducible, therefore more reliable, and staff are less exposed to the contaminated instruments and the cleaning agents used. Always ensure that staff handling instruments and cleaning agents wear suitable protective apparel. In particular, take note of the instructions provided by the cleaning agent manufacturer for correct handling and use of the product. TUNGSTEN CARBIDE INSTRUMENTS: Bydand instruments that contain tungsten carbide (TC) can be easily identified by their distinctive gold coloured handles. DO NOT clean TC instruments in ultrasonic cleaners the vibrations will damage the weld between the TC and the stainless steel. DO NOT use solutions that contain benzyl ammonium chloride (BAC) to clean/disinfect TC instruments. The BAC will soften and destroy the TC inserts. Only use pH neutral cleaners and lubricants on TC instruments. High pH will break down the carbide and the instrument will deteriorate prematurely. Low pH will begin to break down the weld material that adheres the TC to the stainless steel and the TC will lose hardness. SINGLE USE INSTRUMENTS: Instruments labelled “Single-Use” must not be reprocessed as they are not designed to perform as intended after the first usage.
1. Holding/Pre-soak Never allow blood, tissue and debris to dry onto instrument surfaces. If rinsing and decontamination processes are not immediately available, pre-treat instruments or hold them in a neutral pH pre-soak enzymatic solution after patient use but prior to actual cleaning. We recommend our PreFoam (AMJ90TP) foaming spray for pre-soaking soiled instruments and scopes. Also our PreGel (AMJ91A) concentrated preclean gel is ideal for this purpose. As soon as possible, rinse, disinfect, and clean instruments as follows:
2. Rinse Immediately after surgery, remove organic materials by rinsing instruments under warm (not hot) running water. This rinse should remove most debris. DO NOT process dissmilar metals (stainless, copper, chrome plated) together.
3. Disinfect Immerse instruments in an appropriate disinfectant for 10-20 minutes. Always closely follow manufacturers’ recommended disinfecting time and solution preparation instructions. Then rinse again. CAUTION: Disinfected instruments are NOT STERILE. Never expose stainless steel instruments to bleach or other corrosive chemicals. Exposure to bleach may result in instrument surfaces pitting and void all manufacturer warranties.
4. Cleaning All blood, body fluids and tissue must be completely removed from an instrument prior to sterilisation. Irrespective of the cleaning method used always observe the following: a) Use ONLY neutral pH (7) cleaners and detergents. b) ALWAYS use distilled (demineralised) water. d) Dissimilar metal instruments MUST BE separated. e) f) DO NOT let “sharps” (scissors, knives, etc) touch each other during the cleaning process. g) All instruments with hinges, box locks, ratchets, etc MUST BE processed in an open position. i/ Soak: • Soaking instruments in an enzymatic cleaner bath is an effective way of removing organic material. • Make sure to follow the cleaning agent manufacturers’ instructions carefully. We recommend our Viruzyme III for this purpose, using a typical dosage of 3-5ml/L, and soak for 10 minutes. • Ensure that all spaces and recesses are completely filled with cleaning solution and no air pockets exist. • Maintain a solution temperature of 20°to 40°C during the soaking process. • Rinse instruments under running water to remove solution. • Change solution frequently. ii/ Ultrasonic Soaking & Cleaning: • This is widely recognised as being the most effective method of cleaning instruments. However, extreme care must be taken when using this method to prevent damage being caused to instruments. CHECK that your selected cleaner can be safely used with your ultrasonic cleaner. • Process instruments as per the manufacturers’ recommended cleaning cycle - NEVER LONGER. • We recommend our Viruzyme III for this purpose, using a typical dosage of 3-5ml/L, and soak for 3 minutes. • Upon completion of the cycle, remove instruments IMMEDIATELY and rinse.
INSTRUMENT CARE 4. Cleaning (cont’d) iii/ Automatic Washer Sterilisers: • Follow manufacturers’ recommendations but ensure instruments are lubricated after the last rinse cycle and before the sterilisation process. iv/ Manual Cleaning: • Use a stiff nylon brush. Do not use steel wool or wire brushes. • Brush delicate instruments carefully, and if possible separately from general instruments. • After scrubbing rinse instruments throughly in running water to remove cleaning solution. While rinsing, open and close any hinged instruments, such as scissors, to ensure that the hinged areas are rinsed out and no debris remains. d) Ensure that instrument surfaces are visibly clean and free from stains and debris. Inspect all instruments for proper function and good condition. e) After scrubbing, rinse instruments thoroughly under running water. While rinsing, open and close scissors, haemostats, needle holders and other hinged instruments to make sure the hinge areas are rinsed out properly.
5. After Cleaning i/ Inspection: • Inspect each instrument for proper function and condition. • Make sure instrument surfaces are visibly clean and free from stains. We recommend using our Virudet 12 Stain Remover (AMJ73A) to help remove any resdiue stains. • Separate all dissimilar metals prior to sterilisation. • Allow instruments to air-dry. • If instruments are to be stored prior to sterilisation ensure that they are stored in a clean and dry environment.
NOTE: Caring for your instruments by following these cleaning, maintenance, and sterilisation guidelines will ensure trouble-free functionality and increase the longevity of your Bydand instruments. Not following proper instrument care guidelines and procedures will void all manufacturers’ warranties. For further information about our range of instrument cleaning and maintenance products please refer to our Consumables, Cleaners & Other Medical Products Catalogue or contact our office directly.

6A. Autoclaving Prior to sterilising, inspect all instruments for cleanliness. Ensure that instruments are visibly clean and free from stains and debris, INCLUDING any detergent residue - as this can cause staining upon autoclaving. If an instrument exhibits staining please refer to our Stain Indication Guide on the next page.. To sterilise follow these steps: i/ Lubricate: • Any hinged instruments should be inspected for adequate lubrication at the screw or box joint. Treat any instruments lacking adequate lubrication. A nonsilicone, water soluble lubricant must be used. We recommend using our MedLube Instrument Lubricant & Rust Inhibitor (AMJ92A or AMJ92C). DO NOT use industrial oils or lubricants. ii/ Sterilising Instruments: either individually or in sets • Individual instruments: Disposable pouches are ideal. If sterilising an instrument with a ratchet lock, be sure to use a pouch that is wide enough for the instrument to be sterilised in an open (unlocked) position. Instruments that are locked during autoclaving can experience cracking around hinges or other problems due to heat expansion. • Instrument sets: Unlock all instruments and sterilise in open position. Place heavy instruments on the bottom of set (when two layers are required). DO NOT OVERLOAD trays or chamber. CAUTION: With most portable tabletop autoclaves, at the end of the autoclave cycle and before the drying cycle, unlock the door and open slightly (about 5mm). Then run the dry cycle for the period recommended by the autoclave manufacturer. If the autoclave door is fully opened before the drying cycle, cold air will rush into the chamber causing condensation on the instruments that may result in water stains or cause wetpacks. Check autoclave filters and chamber cleanliness regularly. Tip; Instrument Stain Remover such as our Virudet 12 Stain Remover (AMJ73A) is an effective way of cleaning the auotclave chamber.
6B. Chemical/Cold Sterilisation Most chemical/cold sterilisation treatments render instruments sterile only after 10 hour immersion. This prolonged action can be more detrimental than the usual 20 minute autoclave cycle. Follow sterilisation cycle and process as recommended by the steriliser manufacturer. CAUTION: For instruments with tungsten carbide insert jaws, we do not recommend using chemical/cold sterilisation treatments as the action may deteriorate the tungsten carbide.
64 INSTRUMENT CARE INSTRUMENT STAIN IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT Contrary to popular belief the majority of instrument staining problems are not caused by faults within the instruments or the metal used within the manufacturing process. In fact over 95% of instrument staining is caused by incorrect or inadequate cleaning and sterilising processes. The table below has been compiled in order to assist those involved in the instrument cleaning and sterilisation process identify the cause of instrument staining and recommended methods to eliminate future staining occuring. Stain Colour
Cause
Treatment
Orange-Brown to Reddish (resembles rust)
If stain rubs off and no pitting exists, problem is most likely to be from: • Detergent residue on towels or a high Alkaline pH (>8) detergent is being used leaving a phosphate surface deposit • Dried blood • Iodine or betadine residue
• Check pH level of detergent and change to neutral pH detergent • Check pH of towels to verify if detergent residues are present • Rinse instruments thoroughly in warm water for a minimum of 30 seconds • Use a stain remover on both instruments and autoclave • If problem persists, consider changing to distilled water for rinsing process. Particularly if local water supply is high in iron or other minerals
Black, Brown & Pitting
Subjected to a low Acidic pH (<6) substance, such as: • Low pH detergent residue on instruments or towels • Exposed to other chemicals compounds from “cold soaking” • Exposure to Bleach or other ammonia compounds
• Check pH level of detergent and change to neutral pH detergent • Check pH of towels to verify if detergent residues are present • Eliminate exposure to chemicals or bleach • Rinse thoroughly and consider distilled water for contiued rinsing. Particularly if local water supply is high in iron or other minerals. • Use a stain remover on both instruments and autoclave • If pitting remains, return instrument to manufacturer for evaluation
Rainbow or Multi-colour
• Instruments have been heat comprimised, tensile strength is comprised
• Check the autoclave for proper temperature
Bluish-Green Bluish-Black
• Cross-contamination between dissimilar metals
• Separate instruments by metal type before cleaning or autoclaving
Bluish-Gray (possible pitting)
• Incorrect preparation of cold sterilisation solutions
• Follow solution manufacturer’s direction closely, particularly temperature and soak time • Use distilled water • Change solution as per manufacturer’s instructions
Rust
• Sterilising instruments of dissimilar metals in same • Separate instruments by metal type prior to cycle sterilisation • Chemicals in detergents or excess amounts of iron • Use neutral pH detergents and change to distilled or other minerals from local water supply water. Particularly if local water supply is high in • New instruments may be slightly magnetised during iron or other minerals. the manufacturing process • Wipe off residue leaving shiny metal underneath • Use stain remover on both instruments and autoclave • After several autoclaving treatments, the new instruments will lose their magnetic property
Spotting Light or Dark
• Slow evaporation of water drops with mineral content • Instrument wraps and towels may contain detergent residue
• Eliminate water droplets and moisture by adhering to autoclave operating instructions • Use stain remover on both the instruments and autoclave • Use neutral pH detergents and change to distilled water. Particularly if local water supply is high in iron or other minerals. • Wash wraps and towels in neutral pH detergent
