Welcome to the macrobert’s Autumn/Winter Season 2010 Welcome to the new Autumn/Winter edition of our What’s On guide. We’re kicking off the season with an event which we hope will help shape the future of creative experiences for young people in Scotland - mFEST, our brand new festival programmed for, by and with young people aged 12 - 17. The festival runs from 30 July - 2 August and full details can be found on pages 13 and 14. You can also find out more at www.m-fest.org. We’re sure that people of all ages will find a wealth of amazing experiences at mFEST, and all are welcome! Further into the season, we’re really looking forward to Pilot Theatre with their new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Having created such amazing pieces as Looking for JJ and Lord of the Flies, you can expect a fabulous interpretation of this classic Shakespeare drama from Pilot. We’re delighted to welcome Borderline Theatre Company with the third part of D.C. Jackson’s Stewarton Trilogy The Chooky Brae, taking to the stage in September. Previous instalments The Wall and The Ducky were moving, hilarious and truly Scottish, so expect more of the same. We continue to celebrate the Scottish connection with Theatre Objectiv’s A Promised Land - an emotionally charged exploration of the life of Dumfriesshireborn Jane Haining, ‘the Scottish Schindler’, who saved many Jewish children from the fate she was to suffer herself in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. We have a real treat for opera fans this season, as Scottish Opera will be performing Carmen in October. Our music programme also includes macrobert favourites the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and light-hearted entertainment in the form of Caledon. Parents and carers will need to rush for tickets for Julia Donaldson’s latest tour, Stickman and Co, as these storytelling and song sessions are extremely popular. Remember to bring your books along to be signed, or you can buy new books for your collection from the Waterstones concession on the day. The delightful Frozen Charlotte (the creative team behind last Christmas’ lovely show for ages 0 - 3, Peep) will perform Paperbelle, and look out for raucous fun in the form of Scotty and Lulu, and Cbeebies presenter Andy Day on tour with Mike James in Andy and Mike’s Big Box of Bananas. And what would be the Winter season without our own Christmas pantomime? Once again Johnny McKnight takes the helm - writing, directing and starring in this year’s hilarious offering - Snow White of The Seven De’Wharffs. Rob Evans, writer and director of last year’s delightful The Night Before Christmas, will present the age 3 - 5s Christmas show Mr Snow, and acclaimed children’s theatre company Catherine Wheels will be here for 3 weeks with White for ages 0 - 3. Devised by macrobert favourite Andy Manley, this is a perfect first theatre experience for babies and toddlers. We look forward to seeing you very soon this season at macrobert!

Borderline Theatre

The Chooky Brae by D C Jackson

It’s Christmas day in Stewarton and Irene Gordon’s struggling to get in the festive spirit. Her 18 year old daughter Norma’s just had a baby, her ex-husband Gordon’s just had a stroke and her eldest Barry’s having a break down. Even the Dr Who Christmas special is disappointing. If this was a wonderful life she would receive some angelic intervention - instead she gets Rab McGuire, a gift-wrapped male sex aid and an escaped chicken that won’t be stuffed. A new play about love, duty and free range fowl.

As funny as The Wall, as moving as The Ducky -

the final chapter of

The Stewarton trilogy.

Theatre Objectiv

A Promised Land A Promised Land is a story of freedom and captivity, loyalty and love, political coercion and personal self-sacrifice. It revolves around the true story of Dumfriesshire born Jane Haining , ‘the Scottish Schindler’, who saved many Jewish children from the fate she was to suffer herself in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Not without irony or humour, this is a play about hope and reconciliation which raises many issues of relevance today in a challenging way through a controversial story.

A dance theatre piece influenced by a personal viewpoint on the pros and cons of being a bloke involved in the dance industry, Such a Bloke, is a mixture of Claxton’s fluid style, met with the robustness of Mills’ hip hop background. A hit during the Fringe in 2009 and fusing dance, theatre, film and animation, Watch IT! Takes a close look at relationship we form with our television. Open Book Theatre Company presents

The Tobacco Merchant’s Lawyer Written by Iain Heggie Directed by Liz Carruthers Starring Benny Young

From 1780, a quintessential piece of Glasgow in 2010. In the Merchant City Glasgow is booming but the American war is looming. The city’s wealth is dependent on American tobacco. Will the great port survive? This pressing question is NOT addressed by Enoch Dalmellington, resident of Virginia Street. He is more concerned about marrying off his dreich, pious, humourless daughter Euphemia, being able to afford his pew at the Tron Kirk and what to do about Mistress Zapata’s scurrilous predictions about Glasgow in 2010.
