Introduction from Fiona, Executive Director Welcome to the first Autumn film brochure of 2010! We’ve enjoyed the summer blockbusters here at macrobert but are also looking forward to seeing some slightly more alternative movie choices in this issue including the immensely strong Bronco Bullfrog, the very moving and powerful Rough Aunties and Chris Rock’s Good Hair - on face-value a lighthearted comedy documentary, but scratch the surface and you will see some bold insights into globalisation, race and class. As always our children’s selection includes latest blockbusters such as Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After, and break dancing meets ballet in the latest dance movie Street Dance. We also extend a welcome to all new and returning students, don’t forget to pick up your cinema loyalty card at the box office. We’ll see you here at the Norman McLaren filmhouse very soon!

Baby Pictures - You CAN still go to the cinema! Now you can bring your baby along and enjoy the latest releases on the big screen without worrying about bothering other members of the audience. The lights are turned up a bit and the sound is turned down, mats are out and there is space for buggies; creating a baby-friendly atmosphere. Membership is free and open to any baby under 12 months old - sign up before the film.

Special Events Great Scots on Tour… One of the strands of this year’s Glasgow Film Festival, macrobert is proud to be part of the Great Scots on Tour programme with a very special screening of a Scottish favourite!
Gregory’s Girl (PG) Bill Forsyth, Scotland 1981, 91 mins Writer-director Bill Forsyth beautifully portrays the awkwardness and cock-eyed optimism of adolescence in a film that captures school life like no other. John Gordon Sinclair is the gangly teenager besotted with the new star player in the school football team (the gorgeous Dorothy) but fate has other plans in store for his romantic longings. Heavily influenced by film-noir, the main storylines concern a hulking brute called Marv, who is seeking the murderer of a beautiful woman; a photographer called Dwight who is used by a manipulative woman and seeks revenge, only later accidentally killing a hero cop and having to cover it up; and a soon-to-be-retiring policeman called Hartigan who is incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit.

As You Like It (Cert TBC) Recorded at the Globe Theatre in 2009,148 mins A firm favourite among Shakespeare’s comedies, and including some of his best-loved characters, As You Like It runs the glorious gamut of pastoral romance: cross-dressing and love-notes; poetry and brilliant conversation; gentle satire, slapstick and passion. Rosalind, the daughter of a banished duke, falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match. Her usurping uncle, jealous of her popularity, banishes her from court. Disguised as a boy she leaves with her cousin Celia and the jester Touchstone, to seek out her father in the Forest of Arden. Here she meets Orlando again and, under the guise of a young man, counsels him in the art of love and wooing.

Special Event Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones (Cert TBC) This exclusive Rolling Stones concert event will feature the re-mastered HD digital version of the band performing on one of their most legendary tours, captured from front row seats when the Stones were at their peak. There will be a special exclusive introduction by Mick Jagger, interviewed this summer at the famous Dorchester Hotel, London. Jagger will reflect on memories of life on tour during this legendary time and will also update audiences on where the beloved Rolling Stones band members are now. Don’t miss it! She worries about the materialism of her teenage daughter and her own hypocrisy in this area. She worries about her working, parenting and emotional relationship with her husband. But most of all, she worries about how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness and sadness are always right outside the door.

Good Hair (12A) Jeff Stilson, USA 2009, 96 mins Contains strong language and moderate sex references A wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, wallets, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people.

At first, Derek "can't handle the tooth" - bumbling and stumbling as he tries to wing his way through strangers' homes...doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams
