Message from Joseph C. Canavan, Chair Children’s Aid Foundation On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2012 Spark Gala and thank you for your support of the Children’s Aid Foundation’s Ignite the Spark initiative.

The Children’s Aid Foundation believes that every child deserves to be safe and free from abuse, and to enjoy sports, culture and the arts. The Ignite the Spark Fund represents a new way of thinking about the recreation and enrichment children in foster care need to help lead fulfilling lives. It is thanks to Andrea Weissman-Daniels’ inspiration and the tireless efforts of the volunteer committee and Foundation staff that we have been able to build so successfully on the triumph of last year’s event. I am proud to say that the first grants from the Ignite the Spark Fund were distributed this spring to three very grateful child welfare agencies, who will ensure that the children in their care have an opportunity to pursue their interests and dreams. With the leadership of our Presenting Sponsors, BMO and TELUS – and with your help – we will continue to provide these children with the opportunity to ignite their own sparks of inspiration.

Message from Mark Daniels and Andrea Weissman-Daniels Co-Founders, Ignite the Spark

Ignite a Child’s Potential For thousands of disadvantaged children living in Canada, every day begins and ends with the same sense of hopelessness. The poverty, abuse and neglect they endure become all they know and all that they see ahead for themselves. Spark is about giving these children a way out and the igniting force behind a chain reaction that will affect the course of their lives forever. Spark was created from the experience we had after adopting our daughter from foster care. Like so many children represented by child services, our daughter never had the financial resources to participate in recreational and artistic activities. Without these opportunities, her whole perspective of the world was compromised. Spark is about remembering what it was like to be a child and how the world changed the first time you scored a goal, wore a tutu or strummed a guitar. It’s about realizing how those moments turned you into the person you are today and imagining who you would have become without them. Thank you for taking the first step in transforming a vulnerable child’s life. Your support is the spark they so desperately need. In gratitude, MARK DANIELS AND ANDREA WEISSMAN-DANIELS CO-FOUNDERS, IGNITE THE SPARK FUND

7

Ignite the Spark Fund One out of every 25 children in Canada is at risk and needs our help. Many suffer in poverty and are victims of abuse or neglect. A staggering number of kids – more than 76,000 – are Crown wards who live in foster care or a residential facility. For vulnerable children and youth, enrolling in hockey, taking dance or learning to play a musical instrument is a rare occurrence but these very experiences can be the catalyst to restoring self-esteem, developing interpersonal and coping skills and finding the inner strength to build successful lives. That’s why we created the “Ignite the Spark Fund” – a unique initiative to fund enrichment programs. Spark is unlike any other fund because it not only helps children to have new experiences in sports, arts and recreation but it also supports youth who need assistance to pursue their personal and career aspirations in these same areas. The fund is unique because it allows children to enrol in any program of their choice within their own communities and provides a commitment over multiple years. It also covers the costs of related clothing and equipment and gives them a level playing field with their peers. The Ignite the Spark Fund not only supports children and youth involved with child welfare organizations in Toronto, (such as Jewish Family and Child Services, Native Child and Family Services of Toronto and Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto) it also supports children under the watch of child welfare services across Canada. “THANK YOU TO THE FOUNDATION FOR THE GUITAR LESSONS. I HOPE TO PLAY WELL AND I PROMISE TO PRACTICE. I HOPE SOMETIME WE CAN FIND MY DAD SO THAT I CAN PLAY FOR HIM TOO.” - JACOB

$180,000 given to Toronto child welfare agencies

On March 15, 2012, the Children’s Aid Foundation granted $180,000 from its Ignite the Spark Fund to three Toronto child welfare agencies. Ignite the Spark represents a new way of thinking about arts, recreation and enrichment programs for children in foster care. Founded by Mark Daniels and Andrea Weissman-Daniels, the fund provides ongoing financial support to help open doors for children and youth over a period of three or more years. At a special ceremony at the Children’s Aid Foundation office near Bloor Street and Spadina Road, Andrea Weissman-Daniels, Mark Daniels and Len Gamache, President of the Children’s Aid Foundation made cheque presentations to the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, Native Child and Family Services of Toronto and Jewish Family and Child Services. Looking to make a lasting difference in the lives of children in foster care across the city, the funds will help vulnerable children and youth take on new challenges by funding enrolment, lessons or classes in sports, music, the arts or cultural activities. Donations for the Ignite the Spark Fund are welcomed all year. For further details please visit www.ignitethespark.ca

Message from Andrea Weissman-Daniels, Founding Chair Spark “RHYTHM AND SOUL”

When deciding on a theme for this year’s Spark fundraiser, the choice of music was immediate as it is without a doubt one of the most powerful universal languages and healing tools. It can transcend race, religion, geographical territories and economics. It connects people from diverse backgrounds, lifestyles and cultures through the one thing we all have in common – its ability to speak to our souls. For at-risk or vulnerable children, finding a way to cope with devastation, rage and hopelessness is a constant challenge. The need to escape can often lead them to self-destructive or delinquent behaviours. For many, being able to lose themselves in lyrics, rhythms or melodic phrases can be the single most impactful way to rise above the daunting pressures with which they live. As we celebrate the life journeys of our 2012 Luminaries, perhaps you too will reconnect with your historical relationship to music. The time as a child or teenager, when you first made that special connection with a song, how it made you forget, for even a few minutes, your anger at your parents; how it made you lose your inhibitions and brought you to your feet to dance; or perhaps, for some others of you, how it inspired you to sing at the top of your lungs with so much passion that your soul cried with joy.

Luminary Portrait Photographer World-renowned portrait photographer John Reeves captured the inner spark within our Luminaries in one-on-one private photo sessions. As a special gift, each Luminary will receive a commemorative photo specifically selected for them from their session.

John is widely recognized as one of Canada’s finest photographers. His portraits have been featured in various publications documenting Canadian politicians, writers, musicians, actors and newsmakers, including Marshall McLuhan, Mordecai Richler, Oscar Peterson and Diana Krall. Reeves’ work has been shown internationally, and is included in the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Luminaries

Bios for the luminaries were written by Andrea WeissmanDaniels in recognition of their contributions to Spark and influence in Canadian culture and art.

Randy Bachman

As a deeply cherished Canadian icon and member of the Order of Canada, Randy Bachman has created a musical legacy that will remain forever part of our Canadian cultural heritage. But his appeal and influence doesn’t just exist here; due to his many chart topping successes, his legacy is deeply entrenched in musical culture worldwide. Perhaps it is no surprise that just as he has been so influential in the lives of many younger musicians, so too, as a teen was he inspired by such artists as Elvis Presley and Ray Charles. We honour Randy Bachman today for his tremendous contribution to the world of music and for paving the way for so many young Canadian artists.

14

Patrick Chan

Having spent some time with Patrick Chan and his parents, it is clear that no athlete excels to the heights Patrick has by himself. Being a “Champion” means more to the Chan family than becoming the two time and reigning World Men’s Figure Skating Champion, Guinness World Record Holder (in 3 categories), or reigning five time Canadian Men’s Champion. It means, developing self-discipline, determination, perseverance and a charitable spirit. None of these character traits would be possible without the nurturing, sacrifice and commitment that Lewis and Karen Chan model for their son on a constant basis. It is Patrick’s humility, genuine passion for life and deep respect for his family that make his exceptional athletic accomplishments so much more meaningful. We honour Patrick Chan today for showing us the true spirit of a Champion; and for living life with an open heart.

Bernadette Morra

Bernadette’s journey to becoming Editor In Chief of FASHION Magazine is a perfect example of putting one foot in front of the other and taking a leap of faith. Having been raised in a family of musicians, her love of music was ignited and became the logical direction to pursue. How remarkable that following her dream ended up presenting her with mentors and opportunities that in her heart she knew would lead her to an ultimate professional destiny in the world of fashion. We honour Bernadette Morra today for her unique voice that continues to resonate with so many Canadian women as well as for being a huge spark igniter in the lives of so many aspiring Canadian designers.

Lisa Ray

Known for her exquisite green eyes and film portrayals of strong, extraordinary women, one only has to listen to Lisa speak to realize that she brings so much of herself to her roles. As she herself will tell you, like all children, she was deeply influenced by her parents and the community in which she was raised. Born of two different cultures, the mixing of music, food and ethical values have all informed the choices she has made to become the woman she is today. We honour Lisa Ray today for her courage in embracing all aspects of her diverse background and celebrating them with the world with elegance, grace and artistry.

Jackie Richardson

Whether it’s hearing about all the time she spent in her grandmother’s kitchen, listening to Mahalia Jackson; learning about the strong insightful mentors in her life; or witnessing her joy at watching her daughter develop into a true vocal artist - everything about Jackie Richardson spells L.O.V.E. Music is more than something that was ignited in Jackie - it is her very essence and is rooted in a spiritual connection spanning generations. We honour Jackie Richardson today as a Canadian treasure who has and continues to enrich our national tapestry with one of the most soulful vocal talents of our day.
