5 Typography Design elemenTs to consider for print & web design.

01 typefAce There are three basic kinds of typefaces: serif, sans-serif, and decorative. Notice the little embellishments at the end of lines on the serif font, circled in red. Those are actually called “serifs,” hence the name of the font category. “Sans” means “without,” which is why all fonts without serifs are called “sans-serif.” Decorative fonts are such that don’t really fit strictly in either of those categories, and are often elaborate, creative fonts used for titles. It’s best to use a maximum of three fonts in a given design project, and two is often even better.

contrAst

02 Contrast makes text interesting and can help you communicate which ideas you want to emphasize. Varying size, typeface, weight, color, and style can give your designs a big impact as well as make your ideas organized. One of the most common mistakes (and the easiest to fix) is putting black text on a white background – this is too much contrast! If you look at most well designed websites, you’ll notice the black text on the white background isn’t really black – it’s grey. This technique takes down the contrast and makes it easier for the viewer to read.

Lots of contrast, and thus, impact!

No contrast = boring!

Clearly, elements of contrast make the first design stand out much more than the second design, where both words have the same styling.

Whitespace can be used to create balance or lead the viewers eye from one part of the composition to the next. It can invoke a feeling of elegance or add a level of communication to a typographic treatment.

WHITESPACE

Whitespace refers to the empty space around objects or text, and can take the form of margins, padding, or just an uncluttered area. It creates a pleasing visual experience and can even draw attention to text.

In the first box below, the text is crammed against the bounding box, making it hard to read. In the second box, the text has breathing room and the design even looks more stylish. We often think flashy colors and bold fonts are the only way to draw attention to text, but amazingly, white space can be the best way of drawing the viewer in, as it indicates that whatever is within the large field of empty space must be important. 6 DEVEMBER 2017

LEADING

Leading is the space between lines of text what web designers refer to as line height. The word leading originated when type was set by hand in printing presses. Lead strips were put between lines of type to add space. Without space between lines of type, it becomes difficult for the viewer to read and follow from one line down to the next. Adding

too much space makes large sections of text tedious to read. Many times, very tight or very open leading can yield beautiful typographic treatments, but should be reserved for small amounts of text, not large blocks of copy. This example from neotokio. it demonstrates how tight leading can create a great typographic treatment for a header.

05 Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between individual characters. The goal of kerning is to achieve more balanced type equalizing the appearance of whitespace between characters. This is especially important in headers and large type. While not as important in paragraphs

KERNING of small type, kerning can be quite functional when you’re attempting to avoid line breaks in your design. Kerning has, until recently, been mostly reserved for print designers due to the difficulty of kerning for the web. There are now some easier ways to kern for the web. One great tool is kern. js.

Filippo Brunelleschi (1377- 1446)

Instead of a strictly illustrated bible, with the recent printing improvements text and art were combined into one . The book includes over ninety miniatures. Colour added in post print included red and blue as well as gold illuminations. Some underdrawings are still able to be seen.

It is an illuminated manuscript gospel book produced around the year 700 in a monastery off the cost of Northumberland at Lindisfarne. The manuscript is one of the finest works in the unique style of orinsular art, combining Mediterranean, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic elements. The Gospels are richly illustrated in the insular style and were originally encased in a fine leather treasure binding covered with jewels and metals made by the Anchorite in the 8th century. The text is written in insular script, and is the best documented and most complete insular manuscript of the period

The Book of Kells was one of the early illuminated manuscripts and the most famous of the Insular style. It was more extravagant than any other illuminated material before it in detail and colour.

The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg

T

he Vancouver Art Gallery announced this morning that it will be presenting the first-ever retrospective in Canada of influential Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. “Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” will debut at the Vancouver Art Gallery on February 3, 2018, and continue there until May 6, 2018. With fifty-five works, the show will trace Murakami’s oeuvre over three decades, from early paintings to a newly created five-meter-tall sculpture. There will also be two multi-panel paintings created specifically for the Vancouver Art Gallery exhibition.

12 DECEMBER 2017

“Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where it recently became that museum’s most visited exhibition ever, outselling even “David Bowie Is.” In addition to Murakami’s art-world credentials—such as being exhibited at the Guggenheim Bilbao and other key museums and being the third contemporary artist to exhibit at France’s Palais de Versailles—he is known for more commercial projects including the cover of Kanye West’s Graduation album and a long-time collaboration with Louis Vuitton.

“The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” promises to explore the influence of traditional Japanese painting and Buddhist folklore on Murakami’s art, his attention to craft and materials, and his engagement with issues such as media culture, globalization and nuclear threats. CURRENT ARTISTS 13
