STAFFS.AC.UK/DEGREESHOW
MON 6 JUNE - SAT 11 JUNE
Welcome to the Degree Show 2022, the annual series of events and exhibitions built around the creative work of over 300 students graduating from BA (Hons) Art and Design and Media and Performance courses. We are proud of our graduates’ ambition, excellence and creativity, and we look forward to watching and helping them succeed as creative professionals. The diversity of approaches and outputs in their work is impressive. Throughout their time at Staffordshire University, we ensure students are equipped for the future by working with our leading academic and technical support staff, utilising the University’s excellent studios and modern workshop facilities. The Degree Show is testament to Staffordshire University’s emphasis on combining academic progress with professional project opportunities, live briefs, entrepreneurialism and networking. Staffordshire University students enhance their skills and drive their creative potential throughout their study through these authentic industry contexts. We wish our graduates the very best of luck for their future successes. Dr Julie King Executive Dean of the School of Digital, Technologies and Arts.
Our dynamic and versatile degree in Acting for Stage and Screen builds students’ skills both on-camera and onstage. This 80% practical degree introduces students to acting techniques via practical workshops, with assessment being built around performances and filmed work. The aim of our Acting for Stage and Screen degree is to create skilled actors with an ability to work across all performance mediums, balancing acting for TV, film and digital media alongside theatre work.
We teach current acting practice of embodied and psycho-physical acting techniques, drawing upon the specialist work of practitioners such as Nikolai Demidov, Michael Chekhov and Bella Merlin amongst others, and our team of lecturers is made up of experienced actors, directors and practitioners. We have links with many local, regional and national media, theatre and arts organisations, and encourage students to take up an industry placement as part of their degree. The Degree Show has work from our final year Level 6 students across Studio One, across campus and the LRV taking the ‘Creative Company Projects’ module. Students following this module form, run and manage their own theatre companies. They collectively decide on the artistic aims and ethos for their companies, their target audiences and the work they would like to produce. This may be an established play or a devised piece. They can choose their venue which may be a traditional theatre space, a site-specific venue or create a pop-up piece of theatre in a variety of different venues. Projects in the past have ranged from creating performances for terminally ill children in Manchester and Birmingham hospitals; a devised verbatim theatre piece exploring themes pertinent to the local community; plays exploring bullying, mental health and well-being issues; projects for the elderly in care-homes and Shakespeare for schools. Our main aim is for students to take ownership and responsibility for their work and create innovative, exciting and relevant work. Dr Robert Marsden Head of Department of Media, Performance and Communication.
