specialty design

This kitchen embraces universal design concepts and accessibility guidelines for a multi-generational family. The client’s request include: open floor plan, island, tile flooring, double sink with garbage disposal, and plenty of natural and artificial light. In addition, an informal gathering space for family meals and space dedicated to preparing beverages was preferred. This layout corresponds to the NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) kitchen guidelines maximizing the functionality of the space. The kitchen is designed around the work triangle guideline with special consideration to the proper placement of the refrigerator, stove and sink. The work triangle guideline states that work centers should not be less than 4’ and no more than 9’ apart from each other with no barriers between them. Careful considerations have been made to implement clear floor space, counter top space and cabinet frontage space with at least 42” to stand while working or to pass through.

FF&E (Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment) documents are taught with emphasis on the industry relevant nomenclature and product information

within residential kitchen and baths and their custom aesthetic solutions. Slate stone tile, Silestone surfaces, reclaimed brick and butcher block add to the durability and sustainability of the kitchen. This kitchen provides a friendlier, homier quality so that guests and family members feel welcomed into the space during meal preparation. The use of rustic materials incorporating a neutral palette helps create that intended calm, warm atmosphere.

This space is a luxurious bathroom that provides functionality to a couple in their late forties coming upon retirement. The client requirements include: wheelchair accessibility, custom designed shower enclosure and privacy for the water closet. As shown above, the floor plan allows for multiple ADA 60” turnarounds and proper clearance to one side of the water closet for a side approach in a wheelchair. Fixtures are carefully placed for ADA accessibility. Maximized functionality is achieved with a large amount of storage and a semi-open layout. The aesthetic of the space is a timeless design with neutral colors throughout the tile work and walls that will stand up to style time and time again.

2 SEASIDE

The Seaside inspired space embraces a relaxing atmosphere with surprising modern twists. The breezy cool color scheme is the emphatic emphasis because of the neutral tones with splashes of color everywhere. The colors put off a psychological association of serenity, cheerfulness and tranquility. The social spaces have simple architectural and aesthetic features that amplify the casual and restful atmosphere. The private spaces are also visually simple, but appealing and different for each person’s taste. This multigenerational family has many different needs and requests that influence originality with the limitations and future use. The transformable structures along with the new and old furniture serve the utilized spaces and create unity throughout the whole house, while adding those personal touches. The rendering shown provides a visual feel of one of the son’s room with an example of the custom transformable system created for this tight space. The system provides storage, seating, bedding and those custom features for personal touches.

In this hand drawn elevation of the foyer, picture frames and steps showcase a unique design intent. The mirrors and other accessories throughout the space are recycled knick-knacks though non-cluttered. The steps are another form of transformable system because they feature pull out drawers for maximum storage. The hand drawn kitchen elevation showcases the galley style walk-through layout with energy efficient appliances and custom cabinetry. The long clerestory windows above the cabinets allow for natural light while reducing high energy costs.

Produced in Pen & Ink Rendered in Marker & Photoshop

The rendering shown provides a visual feel of the second son’s room that has a different transformable system. The storage is accessible because it is featured below the bed for maximum use of the space. This style of system is a design that will allow aging in place, and still be functional and in style at a later date.

interior design internship

Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor.

Sourcing, specification, purchasing, and vendor interaction were all a part of my daily responsibilities. Communication with

vendors was key in becoming familiar with the specific product in order to properly show it to the client. Whether they came and did an in-house presentation or we spoke over the phone, correct terminology was a large factor in portraying the intent. Sourcing within the existing resource room or outsourcing was very important in order to learn about the product but to also see alternative options as well. Producing specifications allowed for me as a designer to communicate the design intent to the client, as well as give to the manufacturer for production.

Client interaction and site evaluation-follow ups are very important in this industry. Learning to have a personal connection with

clients allows for custom and enhanced design solutions. When understanding the clients needs and wants, a schedule and budget can be produced; this provides clients with a clear view of the design process and intended outcome. Once the process is underway, the AutoCAD drawings can be gradually refined and the space can be defined with site visits.

Group efforts and working with other designers was a great experience because learning all the different ways to approach every specific aspect in the design process will be helpful in the future. Having access to constant collaboration between the designers

was a great experience for me and in the end I believe produced faster and improved results. Knowing and being comfortable with everyone in the office I believe is key to a long lasting and successful career that can only keep growing.

Thank you Katie, Kevin, Andrea and Maureen of Katherine Elizabeth Designs for the wonderful and always enlightening internship experience. I have acquired a lot of knowledge from experiencing their dedicated work ethic, drive for new and improved design solutions, and personal connections to their clients. I am extremely grateful for their mentorship, encouragement, and shared passion for this industry.

4 DRYLINE

commercial environments

In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior reflects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research programming, preliminary design, design development, and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance wayfinding techniques, and specifying corporate furnishings, finishes and materials.

This lighting study is shown for the benefit of seeing how lighting will impact the user. Lighting can be broken up into accent lighting, decorative lighting, ambient lighting, and task lighting. A custom lighting layout on the ceiling is one wayfinding key that will provide guidance through the main traffic areas. The finish plan shown specifies the selected types of finishes to be applied to floors, walls, and ceilings for each location. The specific annotation in the plan allows for easy compatibility with the schedule.

3-D sketches of the break room (A), conference room (B) and reception area (C) display initial concepts for the unique style and architecture of this company. The walls and furniture have a combination of curved and angular features that create variety throughout the space. Materials and finishes were selected specifically to help identify each space and have long lasting qualities to help prevent damage or replacement of the items. The selection of ergonomic seating as shown provides a visual separation between the areas due to the various colors chosen. A variety of nonVOC paint and wallpapers add character and help to further define the separate areas. Note: The project achieved the Effective Space Planner Award BOMA (Building

Inspired by tornadoes, with random curves and angular lines, this form was used to reflect the full service social marketing and media firm, but also the overall aesthetics. An open rectilinear floor plan creates that easy-flow accessibility while still having the functionality the company needed for a stimulating work place. Universal design was incorporated by 5’ turnarounds and easy reconfiguration of systems furniture. Each area showed personal attention to detail, with assigned flooring and upholstery, following the carefully selected design concept with finishes and needs in mind.

The Jux. nightclub was located in an existing building in an up and coming trendy Chicago neighborhood. The design concept was inspired by the work of painter, Wassily Kandinski. Wassily Kandinski was a Modern Abstract artist who had a very juxtapose style. With this design concept in mind the use of geometry, diverse color combinations, and continual movement makes the unique layout reasonable. A distinctive element found within the space is the play on scale; all of the abstract objects are emphasized by grand proportions. The use of lines, forms, and various plans will create chaos but be harmonized when all together. When choosing the finishes the already existing buildings aesthetic, functionality, and economy were important to understand in order to preserve as many elements as possible. All of the functional areas were compliant for ADA requirements. The amenities offered upstairs were accessible, doors had the proper minimum 36” opening and opened in the direction of egress flow. Occupancy was calculated for proper means of egress, stair design and exits in order to serve the occupants of the building. Overall the Jux. was visually appealing inside and out and encourages that last wonderful feeling of experiencing something one of a kind.

In this previously developed existing space, concepts, principles, and theories of sustainability were considered when design solutions were implemented. Knowledge that design solutions affect and are impacted by interior construction and building systems is key when moving forward. MEP (Mechanical,

Electrical, and Plumbing)

documents were used to illustrate the design process as well as to support design intent. The mechanical plan’s main purpose in commercial spaces is to specify the location of the HVAC Supply & Return Diffusers and ducts that run through the plenum space.

The Perfect Market is a full service farmers market/ co-op that focuses on providing the community and surrounding areas with adequate nutritional resources. This Market will be located in Schram, IL and geared towards the local multigenerational households as well as providing local farmers with the proper place to sell their products. This modern day facility is designed in a style to reflect the small town charm and heritage it has to offer. The Market’s name was inspired by the items that were available inside. Essentially, the products will be one of a kind and home grown; there is nothing more perfect than natural.

The interior will follow the same rustic ruin features with raw exposed materials and structural systems. The colors will consist of a neutral palette with warm pops of color that will coincide with the overall identity of the space. The walls and custom fixtures have angular features that lead the eye to create a continuous flow throughout the space. Using evidence based design and interviews to create a layout allows for an open concept and features the unique structures that provide enough visual variation to separate the spaces. The use of exposed natural materials, and materials that have been recycled or can be recyclable, cuts back on the cost and environmental impact when bringing in more materials in the building. Using LEED certified materials and features throughout the space when possible will not only benefit the environment, but users as well. Providing ADA/barrier free solutions to this public space will ensure accessibility to all occupants. Using historical features as wayfinding tools will guide individuals throughout the space, and bring back the feeling of the location as it was throughout time. The perfect market is overall welcoming with its visually interesting architectural features and specific elements that emphasizes the brand and products the market is going to provide. The Salt Room was located in Istanbul Turkey where it was part of the existing The House Galatasaray Boutique Hotel. This tapas style restaurant shows cultural influence with its theme of salt as well as the original style of the boutique hotel it was located within. This hotel was originally owned by tradesman of salt which was used throughout Turkey because it is very populated with salt pools. Istanbul itself has natural salt caves that have been around for years. Salt caves have been widely known for their relaxing and healing qualities. These aspects were incorporated into the restaurant to give that comfortable, intimate and welcoming setting. The

branding, culture and demographics of the original

structure were all carefully considered when creating the details for the new restaurant. The Salt Room in contrast to the existing boutique hotel has more of a darker space, in which color is perceived through unique elements and lighting levels. The custom light shown was used as a focal point above the bar to give it a more dramatic lighting as well as to emphasis the architectural details located behind.
