Trams garage 5
PUC-RIO. Recovery Project. Profs. João Calafate, Ernani Freire Team work with: Catarina Matos. Filipa Araújo § The garage of the tramway has important significance for the population of Rio de Janeiro, both in the tourist symbol that became and the arduous task as they play for too years to improve mobility in a place with so many hills. The district enjoys a wonderful view of the city and is currently frequented by artists and students. The project is a university residence with garden and cafeteria open to the public. The rooms are organized into modules ,single or double, suspended by the pre-existing structure of the garage. Each room enjoys the view of downtown Rio and the circulation through metal walkways encourages interaction between guests.

17 cm 9
PUC-RIO. Utopic Project. Profs: Gabriel Duarte, Luciano Alvares, Claudia Escarlate, Flaviana Raynaud. Team work with: Omar Kadiri. Draft urban scale. The proposed exercise consisted on designing an architectural element that functioned as a catalyst in the neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Combining public and private spaces, to transit or stay, giving priority to pedestrians and improving the place where it belongs. The project is called “17cm because of its conceptual relationship with the step, which ultimately solve the proposed public park.

Inhabiting the void 17
PUC-RIO. Recovery Project. Profs: João Calafate, Ernani Freire. References: COLOCO “Laboratoire de Squelettes” Team work with: Sacha Mollaret In Rio de Janeiro lives up the problem of overcrowding alarmingly. The slums are growing and there are many people who live below the poverty line. The proposed project challenges the architects responsible for developing solutions, to look at the abandoned concrete structures as “new
Inspired by the work of the studio COLOCO, identifying and cataloging these structures worldwide, we propose that recovery may also include buildings with no historic value but potential for improvement of urban life. The building in question is situated in Santa Teresa and is home to an NGO. By acting in this architectural object we reorganize the space of the NGO, inputting housing in the previous empty structure, creating a central void dedicated to movement, ventilation and programmatic organization. The idea was to apply a model applicable to other similar situations and able to change depending on future needs of users.

Passion fruits strategy 23
FA-UTL.
Biomimicry Project. Prof: Fernando Bagulho. References: Organization within a passion.
“Biomimicry is the examination of nature, its processes and elements, to emulate or take inspiration from in order to solve human problems sustainably. In this exercize we studied passion fruit, which is organized by vitamined and open areas protected by a surrounding shell, and captured the logic of the fruit to develop an emergency housing unit. There are three main parts devoted to feeding, hygiene and rest, that can combine themselves in different ways, with indoor and outdoor use. The aggregation is done by a textile mesh that works like the protective shell.

FA-UTL. Urban Project. Prof: Nuno Mateus. References: Centripetal model city. Life and Death of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs. A search was made, in terms of morphologies of cities in the world, to cover a wide variety of urban solutions that could broaden students’ horizons. The urban proposal aimed to look at urban life from a different angle from the ordinary. Or think the city through the eyes of those who experience it daily, instead of thinking “outside” or “far”.
Thus, priority was given to the pedestrian as a target for intervention delay and the project was coming up “through trial and error”, just like in a science lab. The five topics covered by the teacher as binding constraints on each project were: the ecological corridor, clusters, pathways and smooth mobility, the prospects for a framework and squares.

Multifunctional dynamic infrastructures 33
FA-UTL. Mixed-use and Infrastructure Recovery. Marter’sThesis Project. Prof: Nuno Mateus. References: The High Line, New York. Fiat Lingotto, Turim. Based on the survey, the state of mobility infrastructures in cities is analized, such as some phenomena causing the same. Next its proposed a critical reflection to suggest urban infrastructures as active elements in the life of cities, reversing the thought that advocated these bodies as responsible for the degradation of the urban fabric. The exploration of the theme is made by analysis of two case studies that served as support for research and inspiration for developing practical project proposed.
These are the High Line public park in New York and the old Fiat Lingotto car factory in Turin. The infrastructure chosen for practical case study was TĂşnel do Rego in Lisbon which gathers the problems studied in this investigation. Thus the proposed project constitutes an intervention in order to rehabilitate a pre-existence now obsolete.

Anything else 45
COMPETITION Micro Scale Project. Team work with: Joana Grilo, Margarida Jer贸nimo. References: Flower petals. Typical Lisbon kiosks. When thinking of textile architecture the idea of lightweight structures immediatly comes to mind. Despite of the many different meanings and configurations this kind of structures can have, for us the possibility of a dynamic architecture, was particularly interesting.
Something that is not confined to a use or to a fixed formality, a multifunctional place. Something that today can be one thing, but tomorrow can be anything else. Recently the attention given to the public spaces has increased, together with the awareness of their importance in the society. In Lisbon a paradigmatic case was the renewed interest in the kiosks, small street cafes once popular, that had been deactivated for at least one decade. This object could be an extension for an existing place, as well as it could provide lodging for diverse activities. Being something else is, by itself, an invitation for public appropriation.
