RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For this project I was given a client who was looking to remodel and expand their current home. The client is living in a 4,000 square foot home and is looking for new high-end materials and finishes.

RESIDENTIAL

CLIENT PROFILE: The clients are in search of home in La Canada Flintridge, California that adapts to their multi-generational family. Peter and Lin, the homeowners, along with their three children and Peter’s parents want a home that blends all of their native cultures. They are looking for private spaces that they can enjoy by themselves while still providing spaces that they can enjoy as an entire family. Because Peter’s parents are also living in the home, it is important that they accomodate the home in a senior friendly way. Peter and Lin would also like to have a playroom for their twin daughters that they can easily supervise.

C O N C E P T S TAT E M E N T: This design has a focus on bringing the exterior to the interior. Being from California there is a lot of opportunity to bring in a lot of natural daylight with large windows. Taking inspiration from the Great Wall of China will bring a natural aesthetic into the space with the color scheme and material choices. A geometric layout will provide the family with proper private spaces and public spaces they are looking for.

RETAIL & RESTAURANT PROJECT

RETAIL & RESTAURANT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For this project my partner and I were tasked with creatively combining a retail store with a restaraunt in order to revive the retail scene in the East Village, Des Moines.

C O N C E P T S TAT E M E N T: To create and design vintage record store that merges live art, ranging from live music to art performances, with a cafe. We aim to attract the old and the new school consumers of the East Village. We want to bring a contemporary aesthetic that blends vintage and artistic nature. Doing so, this will provide an inspiring space, allowing customers to feel comfortable to create. We will create space for both individual and collaborative work. All of this will be achieved by using a mixture of raw and industrial materials such as wood, concrete, iron, vintage art, etc.

SPECIAL NEEDS LEARNING CENTER PROJECT

LEARNING CENTER

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For this project my partner, Meghan Hartman, and I were tasked with creating a learning center for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Providing spaces that stimulate tasks in everyday life in order to increase quality of life. Along with redesigning the interior we needed to create a new brand for the client.

CLIENT PROFILE: Our client is a non-profit business whose mission statement is “do everything it takes to empower people with disabilities to live active, self-determied lives. They strive to create opportunites for those with ASD.

C O N C E P T S TAT E M E N T: Those with Austism Spectrum Disorder can often feel highly anxious and have a tendency to stress easily. In order to make those occupying the space the most comfortable, the design will obtain calming aspects like a fish tank or waterfall, but will also have bright colors to stimulate creativity and induce alertness. Another aspect of this theme that would be created by bubbles. These patterns and textures can be used in various ways throughout the space.

Milieu : the physical or social setting in which something occurs or develops Adapting ecosystems > adapting habitats > adapting a lifestyle

“...individuals with ASD like structure, so they may follow visual schedules, expect things in specific locations” “I would say have sensory integration rooms by the more stressful areas, like where they would do work. Some rooms could be bright colors and some dim” “...have a fish tank or a fireplace to help keep calm. I would also say to not have too busy of environments becuase it could be bothersome and some need to work in simple environments” “...have furniture that could adapt to different needs: several chairs, table surfaces that can raise and lowe in case individuals prefer to complete tasks while standing”
