DESIGNERS STATEMENT

Maddelena Cybulski-Zammit is a graduate from De Montfort University with a BA (Hons) in Textiles Design. Seeking to develop a career in knitted textiles. My latest collection focuses on reviving the word Virago to its rightful definition, centuries ago it symbolized a powerful and heroic woman, developing their potential outside of their conventions. Heritage, ancient traditions and practices is something I find really inspiring for concepts. Going back into history and reviving an idea that has been lost in this society to create a contemporary concept makes my collections palatable for a diverse range of people. Designing for longevity- creating something that will be valued and kept for a lifetime.

VIRAGO The ancient word Virago symbolized, centuries ago, a powerful and heroic woman developing their potential outside of their conventions. This project focuses on reviving this word to its true meaning. The collection was inspired by the indigenous Indian American tribes, the women of these tribes were adorned in garments with embellishment, tassels and dramatic fringes- denoting power- many were notable warriors and chiefs of their tribes. This womenswear high fashion S/S collection aspires to empower the wearer. Initial inspiration derived from Samurai Armour- taking elements to create handmade copper embellishments and incorporating the powerful, intimidation that’s associated with armour.
