MJ Takes on Intro to Design By Madelyn Joski

Introduction This is my Process Book of all of the projects I have completed of the course of the first semester of Fall 2014 for my Intro to Design class taught by Professor Katie Ries. This book will share the trials and tribulations of how I received the end product. This book will exhibit my feelings toward the projects, the outcomes, and everything inbetween. I hope you enjoy the journey of how MJ Took on Intro to Design 2014!

Dot & Line The objective of this project was discover how to think abstract, but still convey and communicate a certain meaning of the word you picked. I picked the word Drift! I understand that the gestalt technique includes the techniques of closure, continuance, similarity, proximity, and alignment. I usually am the type of person who likes to get the project done fast, and I hate fiddling around with the same piece for hours--that’s not how I work or the style I achieve doing things in. Once I complete a project, I hate revising it; thus, creating this project harder than I expected. I like how we had a lot of guidelines, but still had so many options. We could only use a certain amount of dots and lines on each composition, but could choose the color, orientation, proximity, alignment, the closure, continuance, or similarity. Abstraction has always been not important or artistic to me, but this project has helped me enjoy straying off from the “norm” or order. It was very difficult to represent my ideas without illustrating them. Particularly, when I wanted to portray joy, I wanted to put a smiley face or try and create a sub with rays, but I ended up straying away from the cliche way of doing it, and looked at other alternatives. Even though, those representations are the first that come to my mind when I think of joy, I wanted to have the observer be intrigued and not know right away what I representing. This project might help me apply this way of thinking to my photography in the future projects and assignments I have. 1

Hand Lettering

Drift: Finals The objective of this project was to pick a word off of the list, and creativly create your own hand lettering. Digital lettering to me is plain, uniform, and has no personality. Whereas, hand lettering can express a feeling, personality, and vibe to the observer. I like how it is more personal as well. My hand lettering was not so strong in the beginning, but by trying a lot of different techniques in my iterations, I mastered it better than I thought I could have. I used a lot of different cursive lettering, because I learned how to do that in second grade, and think it is a classy and fun way to express type. I could not make huge lettering, but a decent sized lettering could be handled. I would try and do a decal on my wall in my room with my name or a monogram. I always liked decor like that!

Designer Presentation The objective of this project was to explore other designers, and their work. I expanded my horizons on other artists other than the “super famous, well known ones” and picked a woman named Debbie Millman! I love empowered women who are savvy in the business world, and make a name known for themselves. Debbie Millman is known for working her way up into the design world, and wanting something, and achieving it. I love that she was so successful, and find that mesmerizing, because I want to be in her shoes someday. She could be considered one of my idols, and someone who I aspire to become one day. I was not nervous to present in front of my classmates. I actually chose to go first! I just hate how I compare my project to their projects, thinking I did something wrong or forgot a part of it. I really enjoyed Carson’s designer, because he thought “outside of the box”, and broke the rules. That is very commendable in the design world, because that is what it is all about. Not conforming to “the right way” of doing things, and breaking society’s boundaries. Debbie Millman primarily worked on creating brand logos for popular companies, restaurants, and for food marketing. Here are some of her most popular creations...

Object Iterations The objective of this project was to make many images while using different types of media. The two types included: using type (or words) and other magazine images to create a collage of an animal. I chose a peacock! A peacock was a difficult creature to choose, just because there are so many colors, big feathers, and textures to express while also balancing the small body it has. I really enjoyed making the collages of my peacocks using different patterns and colors, and I thought the textual media was harder to portray a peacock. I had a slight background to Photoshop, so I helped a couple classmates along the way. But, I learned how to scan objects in, which was a total new experience for me! I also learned how to enhance the curves on the peacocks to make the colors pop more! I can use the scanning techniques for other photography projects I will have. I would no longer confine the peacock to a square piece of paper. I would make it big, gaudy, and glamorous. A peacock is known for its elegance, and it’s presence due to its humongous feather span. So, I would use huge feathers, and just make the project HUGE. 7

Children’s Book The objective of this project was to collaborate with the author of the book, and create appealing, visual images to go along with the text the author wrote. My partner and I actually worked together very well. I liked the combination of working with the opposite gender, because we each had different ideas for the project. Brandon was very easy going, and chose the topic of his story to something I liked, which was really cool! My partner wrote an awesome story! He included rhyming into it as well, which tied in with the children book nicely. Also, his attitude and persistence with me was amazing. He always emailed me to check in to see my progress, and created meeting times according to my schedule. Lastly, he was super organized with his deadlines to get me the text on time, and coordinating meetings. He didn’t want to give me much feedback, because he thought the illustrations were my territory, and vice-versa, the text was his territory. The time commitment to this project was the hardest for me. I missed a lot of class time, and did not have time to draw my illustrations, because I was super sick in the duration of the children’s book. I would probably wanted more time, so I would’ve started the illustrations way sooner than I actually did. I looked on Google a lot for reference images of santa, and people. My strong suits are definitely not drawing people, so I needed a lot of help drawing them. Also, I looked at other children books in the library for help! 9

Madelyn Margaret This class has inspired me to continue with my photography work, and my business, Madelyn Margaret Photography. I have had a background of working with cameras, some type of graphic design through my yearbook and business classes I had taken in high school, and loved every second of it. I wanted to continue doing things like that, and thought: hey, why don’t I start trying to make money for doing something I love? My photography business started in he summer of 2014. I had received a camera for my 18th birthday in March, and started advertising on Facebook, Instagram, on my highschool’s website, and I also placed posters around my school, my workplace, and other places around Burlington, where I live. I decided to create three different packages for the photoshoots for my clients to choose from with various ranges of outfit changes, pictures on a CD, how many locations they wanted, and etc. People grasped the idea, and I started having clients for senior photos, family pictures, and groups of friends. I also purchased Photoshop to edit my photos; which worked out fabulously! The business was a success, and I made over $800, and had over 7 photoshoots. My goal for this summer is to make over $1,500, and over 10 photoshoots. I would love to increase my prices, because I’ll also come with more experience; whereas, this summer I did not want to overcharge my clients, because I felt like I lacked experience, and professionalism. I took this class to find some direction, and it certianly gave me the direction of maybe not a graphic design minor necessarily, but I still want to take some more art classes. I would love to take the photography classes, and expand my techniques and talents in that department. But here is some of my work that I have done in the past...
