Maddox Gallery is proud to present Nature’s Order, a beautifully curated collection of artworks that explore the myriad wonders of nature and the intimate relationship that exists between ourselves and the world around us.
An eye-opening examination of the shifting discourse between humans and their natural surroundings, Nature’s Order features works by iconic contemporary artists including David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Harland Miller and David Shrigley. All the artists featured in the exhibition have engaged with the subject matter of nature throughout their careers, capturing its magnificence in their own unique voice.
There is a new-found urgency to the depiction of nature and the environment by contemporary artists - subjects that have inspired artists for centuries - driven by the influence of human activity on the climate. Highlighting the ongoing threat to wildlife at the hands of humans, Andy Warhol’s Orangutan from Endangered Species continues to carry the same sense of urgency at it did when it was first published in 1983. David Yarrow’s cinematic photographs, meanwhile, present close encounters with wild beasts in their natural habitats – extraordinary animals whose futures are looking increasingly uncertain.
Other works celebrate nature in all its breathtaking beauty. From David Hockney’s stunning drawings from the Yosemite Suite and Damien Hirst’s vibrant depictions of butterflies to Yayoi Kusama’s evocative Dawn, Nature’s Order explores the prevailing notions of wild and domesticated nature, the impact of human intervention on the environment, and just how fortunate we are to be surrounded by such splendour.
