INTERCONNECTED CUBE

CROSS SECTION | scale: 1’-0” = 1/8”

The inter-connect cube explores the relationship between order and the seemingly random. Using a grasshopper nesting script, I randomly generated facades from a kit-of-parts I had illustrated. The random nature of this process resulted in facades with inherent incongruencies. Through a hand-driven push, pull, overlap, and connect process I aimed to create interior spaces with dynamic interconnectivity. The degree that volumes were manipulated was guided by programmatic studies in adjacencies and scale. The program that I chose for this building is a community center as it lends itself well to a large interconnected building. The Site I chose is the Highline in New York. I chose this site because it is also a form of community-oriented space. The highline is not simply adjacent but intersecting the building form. This intersection further emphasizes the openness and community orientation of the building.

This project consists of a community of affordable studios, 1-bedroom apartments, and market-rate condos. Studios are designed as compact units for young professionals. Condos conversely provide an alternative opportunity for home ownership to families. All residences are adaptable to allow for versatile indoor-outdoor and public/private living conditions dependent of the user’s desired home experience. This project aims to create a building that promotes collaboration and community engagement, integrate into the existing site, rather than overwhelm it, provide workspace and positive commercial value to the community and make residences adaptable.

The regular forms that comprise the Endeavour Shuttle Exhibition are intended to contrast with the extraordinary nature of the object housed within. From the exterior, the project relies on its predictable appeal and orients itself in line with the surrounding buildings. In the zones of entry and exit slight interlocked rotations occur relative to the site context. In the upper-most level the realms of the expected and the unfamiliar combine. Here, the visitor enters a massive cubic volume and receives the most expansive view of the shuttle. This destination is intended to disorient the viewer from their sense of ground and instead demonstrate the expansive world above the clouds. The building’s subtle dotted facade and muted corrugated plastic interior further emphasize this sense of a clouded atmosphere

These perspectival “wonky cityscapes represent some of a large series of illustrations I complete in my free-time. These compositions are done without a plan, usually while multi-tasking. Thus the resulting compositions are entirely from my subconscious imagination. Each illustration individually touches upon interconnectivity, depth vs. closeness and above vs. below ground relationships. Although each illustration is unique, together the series appears to represent a large inter-connected metropolis.
