REND

The “warrior” trend, reminiscent of the Hunger Games, for autumnwinter 2014 is full of furs and armours in juxtaposition with a soft and sweet world full of sparkle and groundbreaking fabrics. It anticipates some of the images that will be seen on the runways next summer 2015: abundant fringe, jeans and flares with the “cool” air of the 70s. Of course there are other trends for next summer, as water, my favorite, with golden sands, navy blue, bright eels, coloured sea urchins.

Sara de la Cuesta Taboada. Bachelor of Fine Arts in the specialty of Engraving and Design in the University of Seville. During her formation period and the following years, she takes various courses and she attends congresses related to the world of art. Her artistic experience ranges from individual and collective exhibitions, publications, and conducting seminars, to workshops and seminars on Fashion organized by the International Menéndez Pelayo University in Tenerife. She has made several paintings acquired by Paradores of Spain, and intended for different tourist paradors. She has combined, on several occasions, her artistic experience with design and teaching, as a professor at the School of Art Manolo Blahnik on La Palma, and Fernando Estévez EASD on Tenerife, where she is currently a teacher.

- As a teacher, what do you attempt that your students learn from you and from themselves? `The curiosity to discover ... ‘ When our paths cross in the time of their learning, I share with them my experience, my ideas, my emotions ... I learn with them and I facilitated them the necessary tools so that they can build their future projects in the professional sector in which they have chosen to work. They have the potential to discover, in which I am part of temporarily and which fills me with excitement to continue doing this job. I consider myself a vocational teacher and I think people who are dedicated to teaching must be constantly updating. - Do you think that the Canary Islands can advance in respect to fashion? There is a future generation of Fashion Designers, Stylists and Pattern Technicians with great potential. It is our responsibility, from the point of view of educational training, to give them all the information and training, appropriate to the needs demanded by the market and that, ultimately, they will be required to use as creatives within the fashion sector.

Fashion is not an isolated event: we all communicate fashion, we all wear fashion, we are all following fashion ... even those who say that they do not care about fashion, they are already defined in a group within it. I think there is future in this field. It’s a matter of finding a hole through which to dig in, specialize and offer a good product. - Have the Canary Islands good artistic and specialized training in fashion? There are fashion training centers in different Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma) and although we have a long way to go, in these centers we have had bright students who already have a projection within the fashion sector in different disciplines . They are the best ones for assessing this aspect. I think each center, each training team, every teacher should work in the best possible way and with appropriate means to ensure quality teaching. Everything can be improved and we are working on it.

After teaching the course “La Moda. Brand and Identity” in association with the UIMP, What are your new projects? The International Menéndez Pelayo University in Tenerife has a long history teaching seminars, courses and workshops in different disciplines. In October, the 5th edition of courses on fashion was held. We have been working for several years and I have had the pleasure, once again, to be the person in charge. I have always had support from the UIMP and in every edition we have analyzed, together with professionals and industry experts, different aspects of fashion: from the idea to the sketch, fashion illustration, history, supplements, social projection of fashion ... and this year we did it from the Brand point of view, brand as a the value identity we transmit and we identify with. In addition to teaching and organizing seminars, courses and events, I consider myself a creative person. I always have artistic projects that require time to study, for analysis and to mature ideas. I’m in the implementation phase for a solo show in which I have been working for several months, but as a professor of painting I met in my student days used to say: “Work, work, work ... and then select and finish shaping the concept you want to transmit.” And that’s where I am right now.... working, working, working (lol)… I hope I can tell about it in a future issue of your magazine.

that must move and that a movement generates another one, and this one, one more ... and in that way we start building our career path, which is clearly closely linked to our personal one. It’s time to believe in people, starting by believing in ourselves. - Anything else you want to add? Thank you for this interview. I am filled with emotion for being interviewed by former students with whom I shared a very small moment in their learning process within the world of fashion. You have a beautiful project made with much hard work and dedication, but full of enthusiasm and good quality, as it is transmitted through the pages of the magazine. Professionalism is to be built ... and you are going on the right track, good luck! Thank you very much.

What is your philosophy when working, creating, teaching ...? Emotion. I think it’s a word that encompasses everything. As human beings we don’t have isolated cockpits for each activity. When teaching, creating, working ... in short, communicating, we are always the same persons. And a person who does not get thrilled with his/her own work, when making a painting or engraving, when designing a creative project of any kind..., I think he/she should think about it because something is not working well. A basic ingredient: to put passion in what we do. And this is the method I want to transmit to students: that we can do anything, that no one will come looking for us, that we are the ones 18

The Ugly Revolution

36

MADE Now Magazine

A

f t e r decades of a prevailing idealization tyranny, it seems that - hopefully once and for all - women regain voice in fashion circuits. Together with the heroic rescue of the so reviled Birkenstocks sandals, thanks to the impossible Celine’s Furry (Paris. Spring / Summer 2013) the term “man repeller” has enjoyed an extended echo ... Are we dressing and putting on shoes for us? Is the threat of male gaze on female body coming to an end? They are the ugliest on the dance floor and yet, the most desirable ones; names like Phoebe Philo, leading Céline, Miuccia being in charge of Prada and Miu Miu or Rei Kawakubo, captaining Comme des Garçon, are aiming very high on the runways and reigning on the asphalt. Their restless minds lead powerful armies which are returning fashion to where it belongs. Thus, it should be a vehicle of communication, a way to express who we are, the individuality that resides in each of us and makes us different. Fashion should be art and expression, self-assertion. Fashion made for women by women. Their proposals are controversial and their presentations are the most anticipated ones; everything they do has a halo of intellectuality and individuality; they frequently have contact to art and they succeed in getting people of all kinds interested. Their clothes are not easy, they are not mild and they do not fit the commonplace conception of femininity. We must go beyond the obvious to find the beauty that makes them irresistible. “My clothes, are not elegant any longer, but quite the opposite. Now I make unattractive dresses made with vulgar fabrics. My work is an exercise of bad taste. “- Miuccia gives her word. In a globalized world, the greatest luxury is to be oneself. Being part of a group is one of the basic human needs, hence, the emergence of a form of community life. However, in our society, the game between mimicry and individualism becomes the Holy Grail of fashion industry: to be like everyone else, but to demonstrate your own guideline. Elusive Rei Kawakubo discovered one of the secrets of the Japanese aesthetic tradition to the Western world: irregularity and imperfection as a sign of life. Asymmetry, therefore, stands for what is different, the beauty of intellect against the beauty of objects. With centuries of history behind, it appears that the never ending power of fashion continues to advance and revolutionize the things it touches. By tradition, fashion breaks chains.

ELEGANCE In this issue I will talk about elegance. There is no need to put any other title because this name speaks for itself, no need for more words, and because elegance is something that goes far beyond a good phrase, a suit or jewellery. Elegance is fitness, it is an attitude, it is to know how to behave in an appropriate manner anywhere and anytime. But elegance can also go further: it may be the way you face the world; a smart person, going around the world with clear ideas, is a friendly, patient and foremost educated person. Education is very elegant, to say thanks, please, excuse me,.. There is nothing more elegant than a person who still uses those words. By contrast, exaggeration, lack of respect for others, and disregard, it is very inelegant. You have to be real, be yourself. “If it is natural it is elegant.” www.bashny.net

50

I remember my protocol teacher always saying that “elegance is inborn, not made up”. I disagree a bit with those words, it is true that some people are smart from their birth, but I think that from the moment one begins to see the world, to have good social relationships, even the most poorly behaved persons can open their eyes and realize that with a more friendly natural behavior, one can go further and even become more respected by others . Also our job to may be or may be not an elegant one. For example: When we walk down the street and we see a beautiful suit, it may emerge in our mind the phrase “very smart”.

MADE Now Magazine

If you go to a restaurant and you order a dish, when it is served, you can say how an elegant presentation.

www.netpotur.com And it is not because this dish or that dress are elegant on their own. It is because there was somebody who thought of using different shapes, colours and textures. We leave some print of us in everything we do, and that is elegance. And so it is in painting, in modelling, on TV, on the radio, yes, even on the radio, because our voice and the way we talk can also be elegant or not.

Welcome to the beauty section MADE Now Magazine Nº9. I am tremendously pleased to collaborate with this issue devoted to what it is my passion: sensations; those stimuli that make me share colours, sounds, scents and tastes; those feelings that make us feel alive and we want to repeat over and over when we get captured and in love with them. So with today’s advices I would like to transmit you my passion for textures and the sensation of using them to take care of ourselves day after day and to encourage our welfare. Let´s start! How to survive the winter? TEXTURES AND PRODUCTS THAT CANNOT BE MISSING

Beauty by Lulú Ventura Our body and facial skin can suffer changes in winter and with the variation in temperature it is necessary to modify certain habits and improve our routines of body and facial care. Here I give you a few tips easy to put into practice.

Hydration and duration: Most of the questions I get is

on face and body moisturizer, which is the best? Or “The one I used is not appropriate for this season.” No doubt many factors are present at this time, as the wind and cold causes a feeling of “cracking” in the skin,. Also, dryness and expression fine lines begin to appear in this season. A great solution is to add a few drops of almond oil to your regular body and face moisturizer. If you can afford it, invest in a specific moisturizer rich in botanical oils or with extra hydration. Highly recommended is the famous Egyptian Magic or its “low cost” version Nivea, using it 3 days on weeknights.

Refreshing without drying: Another commodity to maintain skin tone is the tonic. There are a variety of them in the market and they are all focused on specific skins: for oily, dry, mixed, sensitive skins, etc. In most seasons and particularly in winter the best choice are those with active ingredients from roses, whose extracts are ideal for deflating, clarifying and controlling most of skins. Certainly, the range of Carla Roses Beauty products contains one of the best multifunction tonics in the market and they all have Bulgarian rose extract. Balms: For parts of our body that suffer most: elbows,

knees, hands and especially lips. The important thing is consistency. It is not enough to apply them once in the morning. Do it consistently and that will stop the formation of cracks and the skin will feel very comfortable. You can find the best ones in pharmacies and herbalists. These three textures applied correctly and at the specific time will help you have a sustained, maintained skin and especially without suffering the attacks caused by weather. So now you will have to find the one that best suits your tastes. Go for it!

AUTUMN – WINTER TRENDS Style leaves a mark and it is unique, but a good outfit has to be completed with a suitable hairstyle and, certainly, with a good makeup. So this time I share 3 options that you can use in any occasion and with any outfit.

l a r t u e N akeup M This is one of the most versatile and more bearable makeups, but it’s important to do it with no rush. Natural or neutral makeups nourish from a properly worked skin. This is because the attention is focused more on the face and lips.

My advice is to treat the skin beforehand with a good facial cleanser and apply some flash-type or serum vials to ensure a smooth skin with closed pores. Then you should apply a background of light makeup and use powder of satin finish, like those from Mac’s Careblend Studio, employing a good amount and blurring it with a kabuki brush in order to polish the skin. It’s not necessary to use eye shadow in excess. Even with your fingers, you can put on your eyelids some pigment or natural frosted shade or satin taupe. Finish the eyes by outlining the rim of the eyelashes. Do not forget to use lots of mascara and if you dare, (why not?) wear false lashes to highlight your look. Do not forget to comb your eyebrows, which are an important part of the whole makeup. Finish with very light baby pink blush, apply a lip liner same colour as your lips and give some touches of crystal clear gloss in the middle area so that they look more voluptuous.

Beauty by Lulú Ventura

y k o Sm akeup M s e n o t d e r u o l o c in ash This is one of my favourites this season, giving a chic touch to any outfit. It uses eye shadows with matte or semi-matte finish, in ashcoloured, mauve or green tones. Apply to the eye socket the ash-coloured tone and fill gently the rest of the eyelid with the same colour. Draw a dark brown outline at the lower part of your eyes and blur it down to enlarge the

smoky area. Apply lots of mascara or you can also use small ending false segments at the rim of your lashes. For the skin you can use any finish either light or more opaque. Finish your face with touches of matte bronzer, such as Mac’s Harmony or Guerlain’s 4 seasons in order to polish lights and shadows. Apply a highlighter on top of the cheekbone with a small brush or your fingertips. This will give a very glam touch to your cheeks. Finish up with your lips opting for a burgundy tone if you are daring or light pink if it is more your style. TIP: At the end apply makeup fixator or a thermal water flush to make it brighter.

Smoky base in black or brown. You also need 2 metal colours, copper, gold or silver. Apply them with a dry or wet brush to bring more drama to the colour. First work on the dark smoky base and then apply the darker metal colour forming an ellipse on the dark base, blur it gently and integrate it with the first shade. Apply it also under the lower line to complete the look in the picture. Don’t forget to outline in black the inner shape of the eye. Comb your eyebrows and finish by applying a black and powerful eyelashes mask. You can also use false lashes to embellish more your makeup. Apply the base with a beauty blender type sponge to make a smooth and fully covered finish. Complete with a touch of powder and light pink blush on the cheekbones and leave your lips as natural as possible. Success is assured.

NATURAL SOAPS HANDMADE WITH LOVE What is THE SOAP HOUSE?

We are a family, consisting of a publicist, a designer, an IT guy and the artisan Nancy Gorrín, dedicated to the production of handmade soaps by skilled workers. It all begins in 2007, in the paradisiacal Canary Islands, more precisely, in Tenerife. Our philosophy focuses on the mix of attractive aromas, innovative designs, centuries-old recipes and natural ingredients, creating a line of exquisite products. In SOAP THE HOUSE, we strive to make modern soaps that respect the essence of the past. We have a deep commitment to handmade items. Can anyone make soap? Yes, but not everyone who makes soap is able to elaborate a quality product in which the-

re is combining design, flavor and health benefits for all skin types. This is the key of our product.

How do your products fit in the fashion world? We’ve made that the old bar of soap is creating a trend in use by aroma, colour and design. Let’s talk about the process, how does the production of each piece take place?

It is important to first understand what fragrance we aim for and then the design and properties that we want to achieve. That’s when I start working, I select the ingredients, once everything has been organized, beginning by melting the olive oil or vegetable glycerin. I pour it into a mold and wait a few days. Then I remove it from the mold and it is ready for use.

MADE Now Magazine

We carefully check the previous use of each article, focusing on how to improve it without adding more to it than necessary. This is for us the real essence of craft and design. Colour or scent? It cannot be separated from each other. A texture? Volcanic Arena.

Anything to add? If you have not been lucky enough to receive aromas, colours and textures this Christmas you can get them in our new website www.thesoaphouse.es

Evoking a paradise to be excited about

Have you ever felt that your feet lifted off the ground while your eyes were clouded and your heart was beating so hard that there was not enough space in the chest to hold it back? A sensation, hard to forget and impossible to provoke, which surprises us when we see something extraordinarily touching. We all have our own threshold in the perception of beauty.

I will not say that

inou誰 alters the senses so hardly, but their designs rarely leave impassively the observer, but they awaken an interest that transcends the merely functional. Colour, prints, cuts where simplicity and design are balanced, resulting in bright and original models. Inou誰 transpires an effort to move, a wink of seduction in which each garment is a piece in the puzzle that its creators have devised in order to produce in us the excitement of the discovery.

What moves you and inspires you? Everything from the moment you wake up every morning are stimuli, many people do not perceive them as such but they are certainly creating a sediment. Then, to shape each collection we seek a common thread. Next one hitting the stores is Paradiso, which, after Inferno, will complete our tribute to The Divine Comedy. Are you returning to your origins in these last two collections? Yes, you›re right. Occasionally, we must look back to get a new boost. We have recovered the essence of our first designs to get more accessible clothing, less complexity in the pattern and increased strength in the concept. We believe that fashion, as any creative discipline, has to be a vehicle of communication, in which the real value is the clearly perceived message.

78

MADE Now Magazine

How do you create this whole concept? From the first sketch to the making of the pattern or the choice of a name and the shooting, everything refers to the theme that has inspired us. In this case, Inferno-Paradiso, are almost a hundred pieces which have captured our vision of Dante’s work. And how is your Paradiso? Paradiso is the place where there is no pain, which feels the lightness of the day and enjoys the warmth of feelings. In this case we have used pop elements and common spaces to give a naive and oniric image: Deer, flowers, open landscapes, light... Even unicorns...! Yes, lol, that was a joke of our graphic designer. A parody of what it is supposed to be feminine. “What is the smell of clouds?” I see in your collections that you sustain a constant struggle between the personal side and the commercial one. Are you highly influenced by trends? Of course, nowadays to say the opposite is not telling the truth. The world is hyper-connected. The bombardment of images is as brutal as enriching. In any case, what motivates us is more the artistic than the commercial approach. And we believe that this fact is reflected in our collections.

ION

The relation function is directly involved in the survival of all living creatures. Without the proper operation of our senses and of the interpretation of information from the outside, we would have serious problems to adapt to the difficulties encountered daily in our environment. Your senses have been giving an immense amount of information to your brain, from before birth until right this moment in which you are peacefully enjoying our new number of MadeNow. These sensory perceptions have been interpreted and answered by each of us in completely different ways, depending on the different circumstances occurring in our lives. Such is the case that this reality is not different in sports. To take a simple example that can put you in situation, a balloon about to crash against a person at a speed of sixty miles an hour will not produce the same feelings and responses that may cause to another person. As the brain of the first person might interpret the risk of a painful pitch if he doesn´t covered at the appropiate time; the second person, embodied in a passionate sportsman and with good control of the technique, process the stimulus as a moving object easy to control with an appropriate technical gesture. Therefore, perceptions and interpretations of sensory stimuli are not homogeneous because they are marked by experiences, memories and feelings that the greatly unknown and exciting brain in every human being have processed throughout his life. Prepare to enter in the intricate relationship between motion, sport and good feelings arising from their practice.

To what extent do the feelings and perceptions of physical exercise and sport positively affect you? Sport should be placed as a priority in your life, and until you find a reason that makes you feel good whenever your are about to revolutionize your metabolism through a good session of exercise, whatsoever, in which you push yourself by inertia a little more than the last time you exercised, you won’t learn how to fully enjoy its practice. Therefore, start now exploring what sport you are most passionate about and makes you feel in movement like never before. You must learn to face the sport in a positive way, in order to enjoy the sensations generated by the dynamism of your body. There are countless examples of people experiencing enormous feelings of pleasure during exercise. To mention one, former Mister Olimpian, Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks of sensations comparable to an orgasm when reaching high muscle pumps, sensations that other people consider suffering. Therefore, positive perception of effort is essential to engage and achieve athletic goals of any kind.

82

MADE Now Magazine

How can I start enjoying the sensations? The first step is to choose a range of sporting activities in line with your tastes and possibilities. The range of possibilities should be open to team sports (basketball, volleyball, etc.) as a very enjoyable and fun option, but with the handicap of requiring a group of people to practice, often lacking availability from the others, or individual sports (running, cycling, indoor activities, etc.) associated with many moments of solitude, which I prefer to call an encounter with oneself, but with the advantage of your own time flexibility. On the other hand, the intensities and the experienced emotions must be considered when opting for either option. The range of scope goes from gentle movements and meditation yoga type to extreme sports. Lately, modaLauren Fisher, winner of Crossfit lities enhancing the physical www.girlswithmuscle.com qualities carried out at high level of energy demands are succeeding. Thus, we see the crossfit gaining prominence as well as the ultra long and demanding obstacles races, extreme sports and a countless number of new tendencies.

Motivation. This item deserves a separate section. For if that old proverb says: “Faith moves mountains, I add that motivation sculpts them with desired shapes. From the intrinsic point of view I have already raised the importance of enjoying this practice, since the main source of motivation is within you. But there are several useful extrinsic ways of significantly rise your levels of motivation and enjoyment.

- Watching motivational and instructional videos. On the Internet there are many proposals. This video reflects what I want to show you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdB1yw4-EDs - Consideration of people modelled by sport. We always tend to make references among our peers and the examples of good athletes. Knowing their values can bring you a great dose of motivation.

- Music therapy. It is fully demonstrated that music directly affects our moods. So upload your portable player with music that will stimulate you and start moving from now on.

MADE Now Magazine

83

Can you feel the movement? The answer is yes and no practice is indifferent.

Meditation and stretching: Meditation is backed by centuries of tradition, especially oriental, as a means to connect the mind and body. Given the times is extremely beneficial to introduce this discipline in our lives. A few minutes a day of peaceful disengagement and aimed at seeking the perfect balance in our body will improve your overall wellness practices.

84

MADE Now Magazine

Increased intensity to feel good. The exercise focused on high intensities is another beneficial option with positive chemical reactions that are produced in us. They activate our metabolism, they trigger the production of endorphins inhibiting stress, they enhance the proper functioning of our excretory system, helping to eliminate toxins harmful to our bodies. Working with high intensities is based in the principle of methodological progression in sports training, summarized as the increased effort in a gradual and controlled manner in each of the sessions. You start out jogging and walking in the vicinity of your home, to evolve into a more intense jogging with less walk on successive days until you progress toward a long and very intense race. Trying the workout with sensations is as easy as addressing the perceptions and responses of your body at each session, looking to improve your fitness based on them.

Improving technique and body language. The technical control of sporting gestures and body language may seem simple, especially when we have assimilated it. But the more complex it is the gesture to be developed, the more sensory, motor and nerve demand will be required. Any gesture, however difficult it may seem, it is achievable with adequate and constant practice. Acrobats Cirque du Soleil www.moda.esne.es

High competition and feelings. To reach high competition is necessary to master a number of specific technical gestures of the sport in question. This control is so specialized and complex that it requires many hours of hard training to achieve excellence. The preparation should be not only physically but also mentally; only success is displayed, and especially the sensorial one. I want to dwell on this part to invite you to wonder how a swimmer is able to know the speed at which swims if the only reliable sensory stimulus, among so many whirlpools and bubbles of water, is touching. Or how a tennis player is able to know the tiniest tension of the strings of his racket and any difference in the thickness of the handle tape just by grabbing it and hitting a ball. If you’ve seen any choreography of synchronized gymnastics you were provided with another example of the richness of sensory perceptions and specific responses that could give a human being in a situation as complex as it may seem. These small details are unnoticed to us, but for them the least sensitive imbalance could derail the hard work of almost a lifetime and jeopardize their professional careers. The control and proper channeling of your feelings and emotions must be very present at any stage of your movements and gestures sports, no matter what level you have. You must live intensely every second of that effort, as you test as the perfect and unique living machine with which you were born is able to gradually adapt to stimuli received at each of your sessions, and improve long as you maintain the continuity and every sumes day compared to the previous. Choose the sport you’re most passionate about and not waste time, begins to feel good right now

ACTIVATE YOUR Tantric SENSE Sex by Florángel Sánchez

Tantric sex is a gift from our friends from India, who rebelled against organized religion, believing that in order to reach enlightenment, sexuality should be avoided. It was over 5,000 years ago that Hindus decided to show sexuality as a gateway to the divine world, and even today, it is still practiced worldwide. Tantric sex is more than just a physical union. It is to connect with your partner mentally and spiritually. Tantric sex is a ritual, an enjoyment for those who practice it and get carried away. It is about getting lost in space and time. It is a sexual intercourse that can last for hours and it is to enjoy the most by channelling the energy of your orgasm.

Reaching orgasm is not paramount in tantric sex. However, what makes it attractive is the delay achieved in arriving at the point of maximum pleasure.
