WINTER 18 Made & Worn
Ruby Lee Founder
Made & Worn was created after a long train journey home from work. As we approached Southampton Station, I placed the last piece of my nearly completed knitted cardigan in my bag. I felt so pleased to have got through those awful decreases that had interrupted the steady cable work. I went home and began piecing my cardigan together only to find it didn’t fit with the other pieces. After some investigation and some cursing I realised my mistake was misreading a single line of the knitting pattern I’d been following. With a big sigh, I poured a glass of wine and started unpicking row upon row. I’m an engineer, before Made & Worn I worked for electronic product design consultancies designing and developing electronics. My designs can be found in nuclear power stations, Formula 1 pit lanes, consumer products, industrial equipment and gigantic kinetic art sculptures. My brain is wired to see solutions for everyday problems and that not quite right raglan decrease was definitely a problem. I set out to create an app which would make it easier to knit, enabling any knitter to take on complex garments. I wanted an app that helped knitters create garments that fitted first time off the needles whilst providing a wide choice of designs. It is a big task and this collection is the first step in that journey. Made & Worn is different and it might not be what you’re used to but we’ve working extensively with focus groups and test knitters to bring you something that is designed for knitters, by knitters. I hope you love using it as much as we do!

For me knitting has always been about the physical process of making. Taking a series of loops, twists and knots and turning a length of yarn into fabric. Every stitch must be twisted, every shape manipulated and in the end an object has been created that simply could not exist without its maker. Stitches are created with intent, can be formed by love, stress, passion, fear or boredom. We as knitters make for ourselves, for loved ones, for strangers. We make for gifts, for decoration and for necessity. But whatever our reasons for picking up the needles, we all have in common a love of the physical act of constructing something from nothing. My contribution to Made & Worn came after a long period of higher education and near complete creative burn-out. It allowed me the freedom to appreciate the process of making without the incessant deadlines of postgraduate study, and the opportunity to create with the sole intention of encouraging others to make. To pick up their needles and embrace process, to slow down and enjoy the build as much as the result. Knitting can be a workout for the brain and I love the feeling of taking a set of instructions, picking them apart line by line and replicating them to build something with my own hands. I can look at that cabled sweater and say “I made that”. And that is what Made & Worn is. A place to create truly custom garments without fear of failure. A place to be encouraged, helped but also allowed to freestyle! We want you to love the making as much as you’ll love the comments of strangers asking “I simply MUST know where you got that scarf!”. We love process and if we can make that process a little easier, and a little less intimidating, then we have achieved our goal. Thank you.
Winter 18 We’d like to introduce you to Winter 18, a collection of three accessory patterns developed for the Made & Worn platform, a new way of customising and working from knitting patterns. The Winter 18 patterns were inspired by the very technology used to create them, with the stitch patterns comprised of knits and purls reminiscent of the 1s and 0s of binary code. Each pattern is named after an innovator of computer programming, our way of honouring the forerunners of the technology we employ. As all of the accessories are worked in the same weight, you are free to play with mixing and matching textures or utilise the same textures on all three items for a co-ordinated set. Diagonal and triangular textures offer technical intrigue whilst stocking stitch and double moss offer the perfect canvas for luxurious speckled and hand-dyed yarns. These versatile patterns form a library to choose from for gift knitting, as patterns can be adapted for tastes and preferences, or as the perfect treat-to-self. These patterns were developed not only to offer a great fit but to present opportunities for personalisation, so that instead of conforming to our designer’s idea of fit and fashion, these finished accessories will be entirely yours! They are Made & Worn by you.

ADA The very first pattern in our collection is the ‘Ada’ hat. Inspired by Ada Lovelace, an English mathematician and writer; Ada was the first computer programmer and publisher of the first algorithm. We couldn’t think of anyone better to pay homage to! Written for DK weight yarn, Ada offers a selection of textures and two different rib options. The decreases form a spiral at the crown. The Ada hat is worked flat and seamed. Worked with a longer brim to be worn folded back with a closely-fitted crown, Ada is sure to keep you snug on cold winter nights. Work in mohair and adorn with a fluffy pom pom or pick a bouncier yarn to show off your stitches, the choice is yours! Fit: Adult head sizes 50-62 cm. Finished hat includes 3-5cm negative ease Rib Height: approx 8cm Materials: approx 160 m / 175 yds DK weight yarn
BABBAGE The Babbage cowl is inspired by Charles Babbage, a mathematician and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a digital programmable computer. Written for DK weight yarn, Babbage is comprised of two textures which are repeated to form four sections. Babbage is knitted flat lengthwise and then seamed to make a tube. Babbage offers 25 different geometric texture combinations so you can really make it your own! Pick two of the same textures for a simple and classic look or select contrasting stitches for a textural treat! Size: approx 30cm x 70cm Materials: 300 m / 330 yds DK weight yarn
HOLBERTON The Holberton mitts are inspired by Frances “Betty Holberton, the inventor of breakpoints in computer debugging and one of the six original programmers of the first general-purpose electronic digital computer. Written for DK weight yarn, the Holberton mitts are the perfect beginner pattern. Worked flat and then seamed, leaving room for a thumb hole, the mitts begin and end with 1x1 rib framing your choice of either stocking stitch or double moss stitch. Work them in a soft and fluffy mohair-blend to keep your hands toasty warm or show off the stitches with a smoother, bouncier fibre! Height: approx 18cm Materials: 100 m / 110 yds DK weight yarn
