The local roundup Typhoon To Arrive At Newark Air Museum Newark Air Museum awaits the impending arrival of Eurofighter Typhoon DA4 ZH590. In December 2019 Newark Air Museum undertook its first de-panelling visit to the Imperial War Museum's (IWM) site at Duxford, with six people travelling down to make a start on this important work. Whilst on site a meeting was held between IWM staff, museum staff and trustees, and representatives from Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transportation Squadron (JARTS) who will be undertaking the final dismantling, move and
basic reassembly of ZH590. Later in the day JARTS travelled to Newark to undertake a preliminary route assessment for the move and check out the proposed rebuild area at the museum. This all went well and work is now in hand for contracts to be drawn up for this major logistical exercise. As a parallel activity the museum has just launched a Just Giving page to help raise the funds required to
provide temporary undercover accommodation for the final reassembly of DA4. Newark Air Museum hopes that ZH590 will arrive at the museum during January 2020 where the airframe will be reassembled. Due to the potentially changeable weather in the winter, this work will need to be carried out in a large temporary marquee that will be hired for this part of the project.
The aim is to raise ÂŁ6,700 to cover the hire costs for the 20 x 20m aluminium structure, covering and support weights to tether the structure to a new hardstanding area that will be laid on the Southfield Site, behind the new Museum Cafe. Precise timings for moving ZH590 from Duxford to Newark are still to be confirmed. For further details and updates visit: www.newarkairmuseum.org

Doncaster Airport Expansion TUI accellerates the expansion at Doncaster Airport. Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) is pleased to announce TUI’s expansion at DSA will be further accelerated with the addition of an extra aircraft operating from the airport for its winter 2020/21 programme. An extra 74,000 seats will be added as a result, including a new long haul route to Cape Verde. This expansion comes in swift succession to TUI’s recent announcement of the addition of a fourth TUI aircraft at DSA for the summer 2020 period, adding an extra 136,000 seats, taking it to 32 destinations from DSA. New winter destinations will now include Fuerteventura, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and the long-haul destination of Cape Verde. Additional
flights to Cancun, Mexico will now take place in March and April 2020 with flights to Fuerteventura starting in February. This expansion further cements Doncaster Sheffield Airport as the home of longhaul for Yorkshire, providing an alternative to Manchester Airport for Yorkshire travellers. The new winter flights to Fuerteventura are on sale now with flights operating every Wednesday and the first flight taking off on 1st November 2020. Robert Hough CBE, Chairman of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “The addition of Cape Verde as a new route announced in TUI’s winter 2020 programme, is great news for Doncaster
TUI aircraft.
Sheffield Airport. With this latest expansion, together with flights to Sanford, Florida and Cancun, Mexico, we are truly the home of long-haul in Yorkshire. “This further growth, just weeks after TUI announced a fourth summer aircraft based at DSA, adding 136,000 seats, brings added momentum to what is fast becoming a record-breaking year ahead.” "The new destinations allow more Yorkshire based passengers to fly locally rather than having to travel over the Pennines on congested transport networks, currently 18,000 people per day. TUI UK&I’s Director of Aviation Planning, Karen Switzer said: “Earlier this month TUI announced its winter 2020
and summer 2021 holiday programme which has since expanded with more destinations and added flights. We are delighted that the additional flights provide holidaymakers departing from our regional airports with even more choice when deciding where to go away. With additional flying capacity and more than 1,000 hotels already on sale for summer 2021 it gives those planning ahead the opportunity to choose the most suitable airport, destination and hotel. “The customer is at the heart of everything we do and this additional growth to some of our customer’s favourite holiday hotspots from Doncaster Sheffield demonstrates our continued commitment for people to discover their smile with us.”
Square & Compass Revived Winner of the 2019 Made North Notts 'Dining Pub of The Year' is back in action after the floods in November 2019 caused devestation. The Square and Compass is back providing good quality food and beer to its customers after it was hit by flooding during the recent heavy downpours. Flooding caused extensive damage to the interior of the pub and outside, but staff rallied round to get things up and running within days. The damage came just days after the pub attended Made’s North Notts Food & Drink Awards, where it was crowned ‘Dining Pub of the Year’. “A crowning moment for us after such an amazing year, we had reached an all-time high… 11 days later our joy was quite literally
10
washed away,” said Steve Reah, who jointly runs the pub with his wife Katie Reah. “One month of rain in one night hit us hard, the water swept through the building (alongside 10 tonnes of safety bark from the playground) and tore our business apart. “Fast forward five weeks of constant work, grit and non-stop determination by our team and we’re ready to go,” he said. New carpets, kitchen equipment and much more have all been installed and its business as usual. “Make no mistake this process has been gut wrenching for everyone involved and there
were times that we wanted to give in, but we’re proud to say The Square & Compass is back, and better than ever,” says Katie.

Shoot For The Stars A North Wheatley-born schoolboy has his sights set on the Olympics after progressing through the ranks of clay pigeon shooting.
O
liver Sampson has taken on his parent’s love of the sport, competing in weekly trapshooting tournaments and aiming for international success in Malaga this month (January). A fanatic since he first picked up a gun, aged 13, the chance to compete on an international stage is the culmination of hard work from the whole family and the next step in his Olympic dreams. Last year, Oliver won county and regional championships in his “colt” division, even competing with and winning against adult competitors on occasion. After turning 16, he graduated to a junior and, to date, has never lost a competition he has entered. Now, coach Charlie Dean has decided he is ready to try his hand at international level. He is the youngest in his agegroup (which ranges from 16 – 21), but his 2024 Olympic hopes are high. He said: “My only goal is the Paris Olympics. I think I can get there, so that’s what I want to do.” Clay pigeon shooting, a sport of concentration and timing, first came to England in 1882. As a cheaper, more accessible, version of the traditional game, its popularity grew quickly. Demand for competitive shooting remains high across Nottinghamshire, with colt, junior, adult and veteran
12
leagues in all three shooting disciplines: trapshooting, English sporting, and skeet shooting. The family began clay pigeon shooting together, with hopes of finding a sport they could all enjoy. Quickly taking to the game dad Ian Sampson has enjoyed since he was a child, Oliver and his mum Emma Sampson began shooting alongside each other weekly. The family say the discipline is an inclusive one, offering the chance for everybody to get involved: “We need more people in the sport, and it’s the kind of thing everyone can do. “There are women competing and doing very well, and it’s an inclusive thing: it’s a sport people with disabilities can do just as well as anyone else.” Team GB have reached goldmedal shooting success in past Olympics, with English shooter Pete Wilson taking home the top prize in the London games. Now, Sampson wants to emulate him: “He’s been shooting for so many years, and he’s reached such success, so I want to be like him. Actually, I want to be better than him.” This year’s international competitions are, according to Oliver, the next step on the road to this goal. If he reaches success in Malaga, he will win the chance to compete for a spot on team GB’s shooting team, a feat that will open up
the Olympic games to him. For beginners, shooting venues across the United Kingdom offer classes for those new to the sport. With equipment, safety clothing and guns provided, it’s a game available to whoever wants to have a go. In Nottinghamshire, the Nottingham and District Gun Club offers just this opportunity, opening their venue to veterans and novices to get involved. Moving up in the discipline, though, requires an expensive
investment. For those who want to own their own guns, you are required to obtain a firearms license and competitors not yet on team GB must find their own way to shooting meets. Ian Sampson says the expense is worth it, if getting to the Olympics is a realistic goal. He said: “This isn’t a cheap sport, there is a massive cost to do what you have to. But if we make it to where Oliver wants to go, that’s alright. And even if we don’t, we as a family love it and will carry on shooting together for a long time yet.”

Marvellous Machines Martin Smith At The Harley Gallery The Harley Gallery, Welbeck, has worked with Huddersfield artist engineer, Martin Smith, for almost 20 years and are delighted to be able to get the chance to host this exhibition, that runs until the 5th January 2020. The Gallery first commissioned Martin to make The Applause Machine in 2001 which stood at the Gallery entrance. The second commission was Concentric Wave in 2006, which visitors may remember was within the Courtyard. Martin has reworked this piece into a new smaller design called Wishing You Well, which is on display at the exhibition for the first time. Playful, witty and clever, Martin’s sculptures range from large-scale architectural constructions to hand-held machines and interact through movement. Turn a handle, drop a coin or wave a hand and bring these incredible works to life.
Martin said: “I was one of those children who was always taking things apart and putting them back together again. I wanted to know how things worked and that combined with a love of art and design has given me a living. People often think my work is a bit frivolous, particularly when they look at something like the applause machine, but there is often a sarcastic or dark undertone. Its cheerfulness is underpinned with cynicism.” Everything he does is meticulously planned. Ideas for new work are sketched in notebooks and each prototype is made with as much care as the final object. The You Make My Heart Spin piece started life as a Valentine present for his partner Louise. “Something like the heart machine has dozens of different pieces and is entirely handmade,” he said. “I know some people think that I buy the com-
ponents in and it’s just a matter of assembly, but honestly it’s not. Every nut, every bolt is made from scratch.” Martin’s sculptures are now exhibited and collected worldwide. Clients have included, Opera North the late actress, Carrie Fisher, and designer Paul Smith, who this year said of his work: “As soon as I became aware of Martin’s work, I immediately fell in love with it because it has the spirt of Heath Robinson which both myself and my father were huge fans of. I’ve always been very struck by Martin’s attention to detail in the making of these objects, every piece is so beautifully made, teamed with the childlike playfulness and sense of humour I think they’re really wonderful.” The exhibition runs at the Harley Gallery until the 5th January. www.harleygallery.co.uk

Midlands Machinery Show Precision drives efficiencies at the latest Midlands Machinery Show. Precision agriculture and connectivity were hot topics at the Midlands Machinery Show last month, with new technology and efficiencies in the spotlight. Farmers from across the country headed to the Newark Showground to see the latest machinery, peruse almost 300 exhibitor stands and discuss innovative technologies in the dedicated seminar theatre. Smart farming proved a particularly popular topic, with John Deere and Fendt focussing on how connectivity can improve efficiencies. “Through JDLink we connect machines to the farm office, allowing customers to track their fleet and monitor machine health, as well as transferring agronomic information straight from the field,” says Jack Howard, precision agriculture specialist at John Deere. There are benefits on the agronomy side too, he adds. “The latest apps make it very easy to keep track of machinery, get advice on seed, spray and fertiliser rates and monitor machine productivity by working together with, and being connected to, the dealer, farm adviser and other suppliers.”
Fendt discussed smart farming as another way to improve efficiencies and brought along its FendtONE system which offers integrated connectivity between the office and the machines, merging them into a single operation unit. With around 300 exhibitors, there was plenty for visitors to see, and the new ride and drive feature attracted a lot of attention alongside the live demo area, says event manager Elizabeth Halsall. Among the highlights from the show were the Agricultural Engineering Awards, which were presented to six promising young apprentices. “Every winner received an award of £500, which they each plan to spend on specialist tools to help them throughout their careers,” said Mrs Halsall. “It’s wonderful to recognise excellence in the upcoming generation, and to give them a helping hand for the future.” The Midlands Machinery Show will return to Newark Showground for its 7th year in November 2020. If you wish to learn more about the show or would like to book an exhibition stand, please visit: www.midlandsmachineryshow.com.

Worksop College swim team dominate national competition. Members of the Worksop College swimming community celebrated their success after returning triumphant from the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) national finals at the London Aquatic Centre. Representing the Midlands, the 7-strong team made up of students from Year 7 to Year 13 dominated the event, returning with 20 medals and the Midlands Team coming second overall. Even more impressive, this is the first time the school has ever entered the competition. Year 12 pupil Lucy Gratton from Tickhill, Doncaster, achieved four meals, winning gold in the

Freestyle relay, silver in the 50m Butterfly, and bronze in the 100m Freestyle and Individual Medley Relay. “It was a great experience to swim in a pool that’s seen so many Olympic greats”, she said. “I’m so proud of my teammates and would like to thank Mr Parkin and Mr Franse for all their support and encouragement.” The Boys Senior Team from Worksop College also have something to smile about. Made up of 17 year-old Cole Hewitt from Retford, 16-year-old Hari Thorman from Dinnington and 17-year-
old Vladimar Gurgenidze from Georgia - the boys were pleased to take Gold in the Medley and Freestyle relays and win the overall senior boys points for the whole event race. Max Davies from Worksop has only been at the school for a matter of months - joining in Year 7 from local primary school, Gatefold Park, in September 2019. Max has been swimming for three years with local club, Worksop Dolphins and is enjoying the flexibility he has to pursue his passion alongside his schoolwork. Racing in the Category B, Max
was born with bilateral Fibula hemomilia and had his right leg amputated just below his knee at nine months old. “I really enjoy my school swimming lessons; they are helping me a lot with my stamina and technique”, said Max, “I am pushed to work hard and I love all the opportunities I have at school.” Head of Swimming at Worksop College, Trevor Franse, said, “I’m incredibly proud of the team. To achieve this level of success, especially as it was our first time at the competition, is remarkable.

Crowds gathered to walk their lanterns through Retford and Worksop in processions led by 10ft high Pilgrim figures, specially commissioned for the events. 2019’s Pilgrims Festival culminated in the official national Mayflower 400 Compact partnership launch on Thanksgiving of the year-long four nation programme (UK, USA, Netherlands and Wampanoag nations), to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the journey and impact of one of history’s most famous ships, the Mayflower. As well as planned events in Bassetlaw, commemorations are taking place in 13 compact partner destinations across the UK (Austerfield, Gainsborough, Boston, Immingham, Worcestershire, Chorley, Harwich, Southwark, City of London, Southampton, Dartmouth and Plymouth). There will be a major four nations public ceremony on 16 September 2020 in Plymouth, marking the day the ship set sail, and a series of connected Illuminate events in November 2020. Mayflower 400 commemorations will reflect all aspects of the story. Central to the programme is the collaboration with the Wampanoag nation, who have inhabited present day Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for more than 12,000 years. From aiding the survival of those who made the journey 400 years ago, to understanding the impact of colonisation on the Native American people, their involvement in the Mayflower narrative is critical. Mayflower 400 recognises that Thanksgiving has become a National Day of Mourning for Native American nations and will address the ongoing impact of colonialism. Members of the Wampanoag Advisory Committee have helped develop the Mayflower 400 programme, telling the

story of the Mayflower’s arrival in their own words. Paula Peters (Wampanoag Advisory Committee) said: “The Mayflower story cannot honestly be told without including the Wampanoag nation and the devastating impact of colonization on indigenous people. We are grateful to have been invited to contribute our historical and cultural knowledge to this commemoration unencumbered by centuries of marginalization and uncensored by contemporary event planners. Exhibits, events and activities produced by the Wampanoag or developed under our guidance will challenge what you may think you know about colonization in a very authentic, and we hope thought provoking way. But the biggest takeaway we hope you discover is that we are still here.” The Mayflower 400 programme is informed by four key values: freedom, humanity, imagination and future. Highlights include: ‘Wampum: Stories from the Shells of Native America’, a collaboration to create a new traditional Wampanoag shell belt (in Lincoln April/May); ‘Pilgrim Woman’, artist Rachel Carter’s new bronze sculpture; ‘From the Few to the Many’, a global arts film created by international award-winning artist Hetain Patel and local young people; themed guided tours; new exhibitions at Bassetlaw Museum, Boston Guildhall, Gainsborough Old Hall and Immingham Museum; Gainsborough’s cultural programme ‘Challenging the Myth’, re-imagining the Pilgrims’ story for today through performance, music, storytelling, exhibitions, writing and radio; and the ‘Pilgrim 400 Apple’ Project, BBC radio gardening correspondent John Stirland’s new apple variety.

Illuminate The Illuminate Festival shone brightly this year across north Notts, making way for hundreds of residents in lantern parades across the region, all part of the events for the Mayflower 400.
Thanksgiving Ship Launch Council-funded Children’s Pilgrim ship launched to help celebrate Thanksgiving Day The £19,000 ship has been jointly funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme and Ranskill Parish Council, and includes a Pilgrim-themed information board. Many of the most influential Pilgrims who sailed to America on the Mayflower were from North Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area. It is almost 400 years ago since this epic journey took place. Pupils from Ranskill Primary School got on board the latest ‘Mayflower’ dressed as Pilgrims to also mark Thanksgiving Day. Councillor John Handley, Vice-Chairman of the Communities and Place Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This new play equipment and information board is a fantastic way to help younger generations learn more about how about how people from this area helped form a new nation almost 400 years ago.
for families, not just in Ranskill, but with children from other villages. “The County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme was essential to make this project happen as this funding contributed to half of the total costs. “It is a wonderful new item which is already a firm favourite with children.” Deputy Head teacher at Ranskill Primary School, Jane Heald, added “Pupils love this new feature of the Park. The Pilgrim story is on our school’s curriculum as we are proud of our local links. “The children really enjoy dressing up as Pilgrims each year as part of the special Thanksgiving Day we celebrate each year, including having a special roast turkey lunch.”
“It is a great example of how the Local Improvement Scheme is helping local communities.” Nottinghamshire County Councillor Tracey Taylor, local councillor for Misterton, backed the project. She said: “It’s lovely to see how Local Improvement Scheme funding is already having a positive impact on the local community. The new play ship is a great addition to the park.” Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Andrew Cooke, said: “We are always looking to improve the facilities in Ranskill Playground, as this is a very popular place

Twenty Years Of Success At Trent Valley Wildlife haven in the heart of the Trent Valley celebrates 20 years of success. Erin McDaid, Head of
I
Communications & Marketing, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, tells us more. n the autumn of 1999 Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust was presented with a long-term lease for the Besthorpe Nature Reserve from Lafarge Aggregates, now part of the LafargeHolcim group.
Located in the heart of Trent Valley, in an area known as the Trent Vale, the reserve sits alongside the River Trent between Besthorpe and Collingham and covers land once said to be owned by Lady Godiva. The site was previously a commercial sand and gravel quarry and adjacent land is still being quarried to this day, but the worked out lagoons and an early processing plant have been reclaimed by nature – with a little help from the Wildlife Trust. Thanks to the sterling efforts of local volunteers, the reserve continues to develop and is now also a much more welcoming place for visitors. In common with the lagoons on many old gravel pit complexes that Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has transformed into nature reserves over the past 60 years, the main water body on the site was very deep and not particularly rich in wildlife. However, the range of other habitats, its Trentside location and the fact that it borders another large reserve being developed by the RSPB, underpinned its tremendous potential as a haven for wildlife. Fast forward a decade and the Wildlife Trust, thanks to its role in the ambitious Trent Vale Landscape Partnership, was poised to carry out what remains to this day the charity’s largest ever habitat restoration project.
18
Made possible thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Trust carried out a huge programme of re-landscaping, shifting vast quantities of soil from the north of the reserve to Mons Pool. This work enabled us to re-establish a once thriving reedbed by lowering the ground level and to re-profile Mons Pool to create new shallows and shelving margins to provide habitat for invertebrates, a wider range of plants and feeding areas for wading birds. More recent enhancements at the reserve have included the installation of RADAR gates to facilitate wheelchair access and paths that are better suited to wheelchairs, children’s pushchairs and buggies and mobility scooters. The latest addition was a wheelchair accessible wildlife-watching hide. This was installed thanks to the efforts of our stalwart local volunteer warden Andrew Hindmarsh and other volunteers and supporters. The island in Mons Pool was, for many years, home to one of the county’s largest heron colonies, a sizeable cormorant roost and a rookery. Sadly, many of the young heron chicks were affected with an unexplained condition that caused their bones to weaken, break and deform - leading to many premature deaths but in more recent times the nesting spots high on the trees have been shared with a newcomer – little egrets. In 2013 the reserve became the first location in the county confirmed for breeding little egrets. Until just a couple of decades ago these striking birds would only have been occasional visitors from southern Europe but are now firmly established as a UK breeding bird. They are now a regular sight on our coasts and are increasingly seen inland, having

expanded their range as a result of increasing temperatures. The first record of UK breeding came as recently as 1996 and they have been moving northwards ever since. The ringing volunteers who had monitored the heron population for many years now also keep a close eye on the egret numbers.

Alongside the reserve’s entrance track, visitors will note some attractive wet meadows which, for parts of the year, are home to sheep from our ‘flying flock’ set up to enable us to restore traditional meadow management on a range of sensitive sites. Each winter the reserve is a good place to spot over-wintering ducks such as wigeon, tufted duck, gadwall, pochard, mallard and teal. Fields to the north of the reserve are often a good place to spot Whooper swans and the mix of habitats and its proximity to the RSPB’s Langford Lowfields reserve makes it an ideal destination for a day’s wildlife watching. Depending how much time you’ve got to spare, you could also take in Spalford Warren which is just a little further up the A1133 Newark to Gainsborough Road – perhaps stopping at the Lord Nelson pub on the road between the two! Start As You Mean To Go On New year, new start. It may be a little clichéd, but why not use the start of a new decade to take a fresh look at your marketing plans for the next 12 months? Ronnie Harris, VJH Marketing
H
opefully you’ve had a bit of time off over the Christmas period to think about your plans for 2020. If not, do that now. As a business owner, you have invested time and money to get you to where you are today (not to mention the emotional cost). On the one hand, that is wonderful, and you should be proud of your achievements. On the other hand, your view of your business is probably somewhat blinkered. The phrase ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’ comes to mind. Now is the time to stand back and look at where your business is currently and where you want it to be over the coming months.
Being heavily involved with the day to-day running of her business (and rightly so), she did not see what was obvious to an outsider. If 2020 is going to be a great year for your business, make it a New Year Resolution to review your marketing plans.
“Do you know what
Easier said than done If you find yourself drawn into the minutiae of your day-to-day business, enlist the help of an honest friend or someone in your business network to talk through your thoughts and ideas for the growth and development of your business.
Following our meeting, we agreed that her marketing strategy for 2020 will revolve around repositioning her business to attract her target customers. We will be incorporating her story into her marketing activity, making her a visible part of her business and also, we will be reviewing the customer experience, interaction and retention.
or how you need to improve your business next year?”
Better still, if you are serious about growing your business, get an expert advisor on board. With the benefit of being partially removed from your business, they will offer independent advice, provide guidance on actions you should take and act as an accountability partner to make sure you are carrying out those actions.
Where do you want to be in 12 months’ time? Do you know what or how you need to improve to grow your business next year? I met a potential new client at a recent business networking event (see Issue 13, The Power of Networking). We arranged to meet with a view to discussing her desire to attract new customers looking to buy high-end home products. Prior to meeting, I reviewed her website and social media pages. The first thing I noticed was the warm, fun and vibrant personality of this lady was missing from her marketing despite use of good photography and being consistent on social media.

The magazine launched its inaugural North Notts Food & Drink Awards at the end of 2019, an event that attracted a huge amount of interest across the region, promoted a huge amount of businesses. T
he first thing you notice when you enter Nicola DavisonReed’s studio is there are no photographic lights. Instead, she relies on the natural light that shoots in from the windows that overlook the streets of Tuxford, her base for the last six years. Nicola was introduced to photography when she was very young, and what started out as just a hobby, quickly developed into a career. “I can’t remember not being interested in photography,” she says. And her work is all about people. She specialises in portraits, black and white images that capture the character of her subjects. She got her first camera when she was 17. It came in kit form and included a developing set and ‘dark room’, which meant she was
able to develop all of her photos herself at home. “I like the history of photography I enjoy the old masters such as Francesca Woodman Henri Cartier Bresson and contemporaries such as Sally Mann - they inspire me hugely - and I love being inspired - I love to improve upon my passion,” she says. Nicola’s website is full of examples of her work, from street portraits to studio shots, a veritable collection of stunning images. The atmosphere is created by how the light falls on the subject, highlighting their own unique features. “It’s about black and white, natural light, and I always explain to my client what they’re going to get. I manage their expectations from start to finish, so they’re aware of how I work. Photos can be used as a form of therapy and as a way of expressing yourself. That’s how I see my own personal
work. Sometimes I will get a thought, an idea, and I have to get it out of my system as a photo.” And Nicola thanks photography for helping her evolve as an individual and provide a creative outlet. “Photography is my drug and I cannot live without it because it is an evolving process that it, excuse the pun, develops me as a person and it’s a creative art form that allows for experiment and failures and ultimately successes. “Photography is honest and captures real life as it is in its truest form. With street photography, it’s a bridge between myself and other people. By picking up a camera I can connect with others in a way that’s direct, honest, simple and I think, beautiful.” To see more of Nicola's work visit: www.nicoladavisonreed.com.

Trinity Hospital Made meets Bob Rabagliati and steps into Trinity Hospital, the charity set up over 350 years ago and still running today.
R
etford’s Trinity Hospital sits back a little from the main road, majestic looking yet unassuming, it has stood on the same spot since 1832.
Now, as has been the case for over 180 years, the almshouses provide accommodation for up to 16 people, or brethren as they are known, and all have satisfied specific criteria to be allowed to live in the Grade II listed building, run and supported by the Trinity Estates charity. It is the second such building Trinity Estates has owned and run. The original ‘Trinity Hospital’ was the former Retford Hall, which was left in the will of John Darrel, a prominent doctor from the town. Dr Darrel’s father had wanted to provide accommodation for a charity to use and John Darrel honoured this by leaving instructions in his own will to carry out his father’s wishes. That was more than 350 years ago. The Darrel family owned vast swathes of land in Retford - up to a third of the total area of the town at the time - all of which was left to set up to fund this new charity. Some of the land has been sold off over the years to allow major developments to take place in and around town, but much still remains in the charity’s hands. “In the 19th century the estate sold land that enabled the railway to be built and land was also sold to allow parts of The Chesterfield Canal to be constructed as well,” points out Bob Rabagliati, the estates manager, who has been with the charity now for over 11 years. Today the charity not only continues to own land, but also owns property across town and in the surrounding area. The properties are rented out to private tenants and businesses. The money generated in this way is used to run Trinity Hospital and provide the benefits enjoyed by the people living there. The original accommodation building, Retford Hall, could only accommodate 10 people, some six short of the number stipulated in Dr Darrel’s will, so an extra wing was built to allow for more rooms to be built. However, over time the building started to fall into disrepair and in the 1800s the charity approached eminent London architect, Edward Blore, who was known for his work on Westminster Abbey, to build a brand new building. Trinity Hospital was completed in 1832. Records don’t show the first people to move into the hospital, but a list does survive that shows inhabitants from two years after the opening. This list shows some 15 men who lodged there. As long as they meet what is required, anyone can apply to live at Trinity Hospital, and so far, since accommodation was first provided in 1671, more than 550 of men have called it their home.
Bob Rabagliati, estates manager.
“The criteria for applicants to be considered for accommodation at Trinity Hospital are broadly the same as those specified 350 years ago in the will of the charity’s founder, Dr John Darrel,” says Bob. The criteria for applicants are made up of the following: They must be male and single or widowered; they must be over the age of 50 and of good character; they must have a connection with Retford or the surrounding area; they must have a need and be of poor or modest means; they must be able to look after themselves; they must have a sympathy with the Church of England. Bob said life at Trinity Hospital allowed people an independent lifestyle with support where needed. “One of the aims of Trinity Hospital is to support independent living. The resident Scheme Manager (known as Matron) contacts each brother, daily to check on their welfare. Each weekday morning the Chaplain holds a short morning service in the Chapel to which all the Brethren are encouraged to attend. “The Chapel is at the heart of the community and in the centre of the building and provides an opportunity for all the Brethren to meet together at least once a day and to greet each other. There is no other fixed daily routine, but regular events such as coffee mornings, birthday celebrations, DVD nights, lunches and formal feasts make up a varied social programme throughout the year.” He said the trust continued to uphold the wishes of its founder and was sure it would carry on playing a significant role for years to come. “It is extraordinary at over 350 years later the charity still operates under the same criteria so carefully crafted by John Darrel in his will. It is a matter of great pride that successive Master Governors and Bailiffs have managed the charity effectively to enable it to flourish and to ensure it can continue to uphold its aims and objectives for hopefully a further 350 years.”

Former teacher Chris Trend, 60, joined Trinity Hospital in 2013 – he’s had links with the building since he was a young man.
Michael Cowgill, aged 68, has been living at Trinity Hospital since 2012. “I suppose it all started when my mother died and at that time I realised I was getting older and my health wasn’t quite what it was. So I thought perhaps it might be a good idea if I was somewhere where there was some sort of basic support. I’d always known about Trinity, so this was my first thought. I applied and had an interview – I didn’t get in straight away actually. Just under a year later I got a call saying was I still interested and I said yes.”
“I’d always known about Trinity Hospital because my uncle lived here and I would come to visit him quite regularly as a teen. I remember visiting his cottage and it always looked very cosy. I remember learning about the traditions and its history and stories.’ “I’ve always worked away from home but I came to look after my elderly mother, who eventually went into a home. The chaplain at St Swithun’s Church asked me if I’d thought about Trinity Hospital, so I applied and it just happened to be at exactly the right time and within a couple of months I’d moved in.” Chris says he enjoys the events organised for him and his fellow brethren. “There is a matron here, whose original responsibility was to keep the place clean and set the brethren’s fires in the morning. But nowadays it’s mainly to make sure we’re ok, and to also organise social events for us as well. “The matron organises events each year and also perhaps once a month something will be organised for us to all get together for something like a takeaway.” Trips out have included visits to breweries, the clock museum at Upton and museums.

Michael’s father was a local rector, covering some of the surrounding villages. In the early 1980s he was musical director for St Michael’s Church, and is still in this role, more than 35 years later.
Gordon Gordon Heath, 71, has lived at Trinity Hospital for six years. He has lived in Retford all his life, and worked at Northern Rubber as a team supervisor. While at Northern Rubber he worked as a window cleaner in between shifts – he went on to do window cleaning full time later on in life following the death of his wife. His cottage, like the others, includes a kitchen, shower unit, living room and bedroom.

Brick By Brick The Harley Gallery to build on previous LEGO® success An exhibition of artwork created from thousands of LEGO® bricks is set to draw in huge numbers of visitors when it opens at Nottinghamshire’s The Harley Gallery this January. Brick by Brick follows on from two exhibitions of work at the Worksop gallery made completely from Lego bricks. The first exhibition, Brick City, broke all records attracting more than 80,000 visitors to the gallery on the rural Welbeck estate in just three months. This time the gallery will be showing an exhibition by 18 artists from across the world, who have each used the medium of the famed Lego block in different ways from photography to sculptures. Visitors will be able to see the thought-provoking artwork, which is set to appeal to art enthusiasts as well as Lego fans alike. There will also be a series of
36
activities planned to coincide with the exhibition including the opportunity to get handson in the creative area of the gallery. School workshops inspired by the exhibition have also been organised, along with a programme of school holiday activities in February and April. Lisa Gee, Director of The Harley Gallery, said: “It’s good to have artwork created in the medium of Lego back at the gallery again as it’s something that connects with people of all ages.” “Our first two exhibitions showed what could be done with passion, patience, technical ability and a very big pile of Lego. This time we are showing an exhibition created by artists from across the world, who have created work from Lego because as a material they feel it adds an additional layer of meaning to their work. It isn’t just a building block. The playful,
primary colours of the bricks and its association with childhood memories all add to the artworks that you see here.” The exhibition aims to celebrate and demonstrate the imaginative capacity of people and how human beings use their imagination to make things that everyone can enjoy and share. The art that has been created has used what is basically a children’s toy. It is both a tribute to the product and to the people that worked with it. Brick by Brick is a touring exhibition from 20-21 Visual Art Centre, Scunthorpe, and is supported by North Lincolnshire Council, ACE, and the National Lottery. Brick by Brick runs from 18 January 2020 until 19 April 2020. The Harley Gallery is open daily between 10am and 5pm. Entry is free and there’s free parking.

Snow Drop Festival Snowdrop Festival welcomes the first signs of spring in Nottinghamshire.
S
hake off the winter and welcome the first signs of spring with the National Garden Scheme Snowdrop Festival. These glorious harbingers of the wonderful life of gardens to come can be viewed in over 100 National Garden Scheme gardens throughout England and Wales during January, February and March. On a wintry day there is nothing better than visiting a garden teeming with one of the earliest flowering plants of the year – and the National Garden Scheme’s fourth annual Snowdrop Festival welcomes the first signs of spring to everyone with two snowdrop gardens open in Nottinghamshire. Whether you enjoy carpets of naturalised white in woodlands, meticulously grown rare varieties of snowdrops or gardens boasting a colourful mix of snowdrops, hellebores and other early spring flowers – there is something for galanthophiles and garden enthusiasts alike throughout January and February. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of The National Garden Scheme, says:“Over the last few years the National Garden
Scheme’s Snowdrop Festival has attracted tens of thousands of visitors to gardens throughout January and February. But garden visiting at this time of year isn’t just for galanthophiles who are looking to discover a rare variety of snowdrop in gardens they may never otherwise find. Snowdrops are the perfect antidote to the winter blues and spending the afternoon at one of our Snowdrop Festival gardens is the ideal opportunity to get outside and enjoy some spectacular scenes at an otherwise gloomy time of year.”

Symbols Of Commitment David Fowkes tells us about commitment jewellery, a unique symbol that means so much to an individual and has to be designed to be as personal as the meaning behind it.
“M
any clients now choose to move away from the traditional diamond engagement ring, eternity ring or wedding band and commission us to create unique pieces, incorporating distinctive coloured gemstones to innovatively reflect the love they share and the commitment they have made to one another,” comments Nottinghamshire based jewellery designer, David Fowkes. “Symbols of your love shouldn’t be symbols of other people’s love, and our clients want to be unique in the choice of jewellery they design together with us, whether it be rings, pendants or other innovative, unusual pieces,” David adds. They don’t want to choose from a standard range and would rather enjoy the design journey they follow with us, which is often emotional and exhilarating. Known for his signature use of colourful gemstones, the award-winning designer estimates that around 90% of his work is now bespoke, involving close design partnerships over a period of months with the client. He explains: “Jewellery is not only a powerful finishing touch but the ultimate expression of personality and individual life experiences for men and women alike. My own passion for jewellery comes from the desire to focus on exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story and would never be seen anywhere else.” David Fowkes is a designer who collaborates extensively with his clients in order to truly understand their unique romantic story. Via an initial consultation, ideas are then developed and outline sketches created. A recent commission featured a unique Luckenbooth brooch created for a client’s wife to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Traditionally used as a token of love, luckenbooths were often passed
38
down from mother to daughter in Scottish families, given to a partner as a token of love in much the same way as wedding and engagement rings are given today, or gifted to new-born babies as a Talisman to protect the infant from harm. The brooch designed by David is made in 9ct red gold and 18ct white gold, featuring a crown above two intertwined hearts. At the lowest point of the hearts, an uncut, natural green diamond is collet set in 18ct white gold. Three rubies are flush set into the arm of one heart. In the crown, two boulder opals are collet set in 18ct white gold. A pearl, amethyst crystal and rough ruby crystal are all bead set into the crown.
“In uncertain times, people naturally turn to colour to brighten up their life. Inspired by nature in all its forms, I create jewellery that has a unique identity and a strong emotional attachment for the client, often using gemstones with strong colours such as Boulder Opal or vibrant Tourmalines.” "One of the hottest pantone shades during last year was Princess Blue, a majestic royal hue, which glistens and gleams and we have incorporated our stunning tanzanite gemstones into many recent commissions."
This Luckenbooth was collaboratively designed and the dialogue between David and the client enabled the design to incorporate many incredibly personal messages, reflecting the couples’ personal story and translating their thoughts and feelings into a stunning gesture of commitment which will be an heirloom of the future. “In 2020, we expect to continue to see more clients turning to coloured gemstones to find unique engagement and commitment pieces that truly reflect their personality. We find clients now increasingly look for empowering colours that provide confidence and spirit; colours that are uplifting with joyful hues. Our gemstones lend themselves to playful expression and take us down a path of creative and unexpected combinations.” David also predicts a move away from delicate pieces to larger statement jewellery and adds:
After running his successful gallery and workshop in Thoresby Park Courtyard for over 30 years, David, is now opening up his bold styles to a wider national and international audience. His ethical approach includes a global network of contacts who collectively provide the world class raw materials for his art. This ranges from particularly talented stone cutters to talking to the miners themselves and travelling extensively throughout the world to source the very best gemstones. Celebrity Cakes is a speciality cake design studio that creates wondrous designs and artisan sweet confections for discerning clients who appreciate gourmet, handcrafted confections. Tina Baird is the brainchild behind award-winning Celebrity Cakes, winner of “Confectioner Extraordinaire” category for Made magazine’s “North Notts Food and Drink Awards”. She is passionate about her craft and offers eighteen cake flavours for weddings and parties. Tina believes flavour should come from high quality chocolate, ripe berries and fruits, and hand toasted nuts produced in her Nottinghamshire studio. She focuses on producing only the finest curds and fruit coulis, often hand picking locally grown berries to do so. Because of this, she can offer a tailored experience for clients wanting to be allergen free, often taking on customers who have been rejected by others for the sensitivities of their allergies. Just over 20 years ago, baking became a way of life when her daughter was diagnosed as being Coeliac. She formalised years of understanding gluten free baking by completing a course accredited by Coeliac UK. For couples not having a gluten free wedding cake, Tina provides an individually boxed cake for all her clients guests with her compliments. She prides herself on the individual attention and bespoke design options she gives to her clients. When a couple asked if she could make a sticky ginger cake, as it was the groom’s favourite, she excelled at the challenge - incorporating the specially developed flavour in a stunning five-tiered cake which showcased at the historic Rushton Hall. The cake also featured motifs from the bride’s lace gown.

Relax & Revive Make Time For Yourself This January At Ye Olde Bell.
T
he party season can be a busy time with lots of events, get togethers, late nights and often lots of over indulgences.
We rush around and make very little time for ourselves – come the new year we’re exhausted! It can be easy to then make lots of resolutions that we inevitably don’t stick to. However a simple promise to keep in mind for the year ahead is to make sure you make time for yourself. With this is mind Ye Olde Bell has created a special package to ensure everyone can enjoy a little pamper time. Thermal Thursdays offer guests an afternoon of spa from 3pm to 6pm, a stay in one of the hotel’s beautiful rooms, suites or lodges. In the morning guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast, further spa time until 1.30pm including an amazing lunch in the Herb Garden Brasserie. The stunning eclectic interior of the spa combines glamour and an element of fun. To ensure full relaxation a dedicated team of spa butlers are on hand to cater for guest’s every need.

The thermal area takes you on a journey of physical and emotional wellbeing offering numerous experiences. Starting with the mildest room, the herbal laconium complete with fresh herbs. Clad in ancient timbers from the uplands of southern Germany the warmth instantly relaxes the muscles and soothes the mind. After you have started getting warmed up, enter the Stonebath ® one of only three in the UK. With the theatrical stone oven submerging hot coals into cold water, which creates a dramatic outpouring of hydrating steam. This heats the body boosting the metabolism and eliminating toxins built up from an over indulgent festive period. If it is not quite cold enough for you this winter, try the spa's custom made first of its kind snow storm. Transport yourself to the mountains of Europe. The rapid cooling of the body after the heat experiences helps the body heal, aiding muscle regeneration great after the obligatory New Year gym sessions. Can you handle the heat? Try the Alpine sauna, heated to the Austrian standard HOT! This room is constructed using a special
Swiss cirbeal wood, clinically proven to help lower the heart rate and help with anxiety. Guests are transported to the mountains of Europe with the custommade snowstorm experience. The first of its kind in the world, it features a scene of the imposing Matterhorn. Guests can select from gentle snow shower or if you are feeling brave a more powerful snowstorm. Warm back up in the beautiful steambath featuring individually crafted mosaic tiles and switch off and relax in the Salt Inhalation Room, features a wall of salt crystals. At the glamorous glittering footbath guests can chose between hot and cold experiences.
The Venue to Stay, Spa, Dine & Marry
The heated indoor/outdoor vitality pool is at the heart of the spa featuring bubble loungers massage jet stations and reflexology station. The glass sliding door transports you from inside to outside at the touch of a button. The Herb Garden Brasserie, headed up by AA Rosette winning chef Richard Allen, is a real treat and the menu features choices from the healthy to the full on indulgent. Locally sourced and freshly cooked food is guaranteed to get your tastebuds tingling. Following an afternoon of pampering guests can rest their heads in one of the 59 individually styled rooms, suites or lodges, all of which combine the traditional with the contemporary. Thermal Thursdays include spa access, overnight stay, breakfast and lunch in the Herb Garden Brasserie. Home Spa!
If you don't have the extra time to spend away at a spa then you can even have a little 'spa' time at home, taking time out to enjoy the little things, enjoy a long bubble bath, treat yourself to a home facial, perhaps indulge in an aromatherapy candle. A little 'me' time is always good for the soul especially on dark winter evenings.

More choices than ever before … The choice of holiday destinations continues to grow, and whilst a Mediterranean all-inclusive holiday still remains top of the list for many families, we are seeing increasing numbers looking for something a little different. Within Europe, off the beaten track Italy and Croatia are increasing in popularity. Many families are travelling further as prices for Thailand, Mauritius and the Caribbean represent excellent value particularly in school holidays. We see many multi-generational families enjoying villa holidays or once in a life time visits to Florida.

Cruises are high on people’s priority lists, with new ships been added on a regular basis, the choice is now endless. Luxury 'All
Inclusive' gives way to family orientated ships, and if you aren’t in the know, making a choice to suit you can be a minefield. More ships are sailing out of the UK than ever before, and we can help you make the perfect choice, ensuring your cruise is right for you.
Booking your holiday with The Travel Diamond… The process could not be simpler! If you want to be organised, January is the best time to book your summer holiday. With free child places in abundance and deposits from as little as £49pp your summer escape can be secured, and you can have a well-earned break to look forward too. Booking early also secures you extra benefits, such as complimentary drinks packages, free Wi-Fi and on-board spending money (when booking selected cruises).

Home & Garden
Neat New Year Kelly Roden, owner of Meliora Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms in Bawtry, tells us how to embrace the New Year and step into 2020 with a fresh look at our interiors. I always find that once we start to clear away the Christmas decorations we also start to clear away some of the joy and sparkle that surrounds us during the festive season. Months and months of cold weather, waiting for those summer holidays to come around, the house always starts to feel a little drab and most of us are feeling the pinch from a very merry festive season. So how can we make our homes work for us during this time to help us mentally prepare for the year ahead. Our interior set up really does have a huge impact on our mental wellbeing. My biggest and most personal necessity will be a huge declutter. Nothing feels better than shedding those unused and unnecessary items and clearing the decks. We have so many lovely charity shops locally. I’m sure we all have causes we support and shops nearby who would welcome donations. Organising our cupboards and storage is again another way to help lift our mood. I did our kitchen cupboards recently with some useful storage solutions and being able to see what we have in the cupboards means I’m also only buying what we need on our food shop too. Saving time, money and not filling our bins as quickly. To improve happiness, consider the gathering places, the living room and kitchen are the places you should feel that happiness, so fill them with fresh air, light, and elegance. Lighter, brighter colours – a lick of paint to freshen up will easily help. To evoke the feeling of comfort, pay attention to the bedrooms and family room. They are the great places to build the required comfort in. This feeling can be done with fabrics with warm textures and rich colour. Reds, oranges, and purples can really add a warmth and an almost regal feeling in these spaces. It’s quite easy to make our house feel a little easier to come home to on an evening during these colder months. January tends to feel like a very long month but having a goal and putting your energies into something may help with looking forward to 2020 and with a much more positive outlook. If you are considering a bigger project - new kitchen, extension etc, I would wholeheartedly recommend planning this in too, to ensure you have the companies and trades people you would prefer to use. There is nothing worse as a company than being unable to fulfill a customers time goal due to this not being considered and trades being booked up already. Fresh Ideas For The Kitchen Developing ideas into reality is one of the most rewarding jobs, to envisage the possibilities of what can be created within a space that makes it personal and totally unique. Chiselwood can see a project from creation to completion and are happy to share some of their most unique work with us.
O
ne of the designs undertaken by Lincoln's bespoke kitchen and furniture company, Chiselwood, has won Best Interior Design for a Private Residence in London at the prestigious UK Property Awards. The kitchen itself was completely unique, and had some simply stunning elements including a swinging chair hanging above a glass floor with a view to the indoor pool below. Interior designer, Rina Patel of Vastu Design, received the award and partnered with Chiselwood on the project to refurbish an entire London town house. “We are absolutely thrilled to have won this fantastic award from such a prestigious panel of judges,” comments Chiselwood MD, Mel Holliday. “We have worked closely with Rina Patel on this project and we are delighted that the creativity and craftsmanship of the entire team have been recognised,” she added. The winning project featured bespoke designs using luxury materials such as copper ironmongery, herringbone veneer work, marble worktops, hand painted mural splashbacks combined with mirrors. Subzero and Wolf appliances. The UK Property Awards, combined with the other regional awards’ programmes for Arabia, Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Americas, form the globally renowned International Property Awards. They are the world’s most prestigious property competition and cover residential as well as commercial categories.
58
"The biggest challenges, apart from the central London location, was that the room is in the basement. The large Subzero refrigeration had to be craned in. The other large appliances took four men to get it down as it needed to be manoeuvred down a spiral staircase. The extraction
was difficult due to the basement location and the run, specialised ducting needed to be manufactured to cope with the Wolf cooking range." said Martin Holliday, Founder and Design Director. The developer wanted a kitchen that had wow factor and could not be seen elsewhere. They did not want the typical white gloss kitchens seen in London at that time. The unusual herringbone veneers and
copper detailing make the kitchen unique. "A kitchen needs to be practical as well as being great aesthetically. Planning in the beginning on how you want to use the space, storage, who will use the room and considering the way you cook is a great start." Welcome To A New Gardening Year
Landscape designer, Sarah Murch of Ellicar Gardens, is starting the new gardening year with enthusiasm, good intentions and resolutions.
O
ne simple pleasure I look forward to after the festive season, is walking through my garden on new year’s morning to find the first snowdrop flowers.
Galanthus elwesii is a large flowered, species snowdrop, which flowers without fail on January 1st in my winter garden. For me these pure, white flowers symbolise the new year, a fresh start, stirrings of life in the garden. A welcome to a new gardening year.
Gardening Resolutions For many of us, January is the month of new year gardening resolutions. This year I have resolved to tie in my clematis, prune my woefully neglected rambling roses and stake my dahlias, which otherwise grow sideways. I will buy only the seeds on my list that I intend to sow in planned sequence, because 2020 is my year for growing vegetables. The fact that I have tried and failed miserably for the last three years with all of the above does not dampen my enthusiasm, because gardeners are generally resilient, optimistic folk, rarely put off by last year’s horticultural disasters, keen to have another go. Or perhaps we just have short memories.
Ephemeral Beauty January may seem bleak at times, but I love the ephemeral beauty of my garden in the depths of winter. Grasses and seed heads left standing in the borders for wildlife, are stirred into life by the wind. This sepia landscape is magically transformed with a dusting of frost or back lit by the low, winter sun.
62
delavayii. Glossy hollies reflect the light. Tall, slim Junipers are good for punctuating the garden. Try planting a conifer as a specimen tree. One of my favourites is weeping Chamaecyperus nootkatensis ‘Pendula’, or architectural Serbian spruce, Picea omorika, and tactile Pinus wallichianum, with its irresistibly long, feathery needles is eye catching. Conifers, even maligned Leylandii hedges, are vital shelter for birds during the colder months.
Winter Fragrance Most flowering winter shrubs have exquisite fragrance to attract the few pollinators out and about. One of my favourites, Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis, a tough evergreen, good for shade, fills the air with the sweetest perfume in the depths of winter. Plant it near your door and inhale deeply each time you come and go. Other fragrant shrubs include Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Arnold Promise’ and winter honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima.
Stems And Bark In my garden, bright red swathes of Cornus sibirica ‘Alba’ stems blaze against ghostly white, ornamental birches, Betula utilis ‘Silver Shadow’. Try contrasting a cluster of purple-black stemmed Cornus alba ‘Kesselringii’ with lime green Cornus sericea ‘Flavirimea’. Pollarded ornamental willows, with their red, black or yellow stems inject colour high amongst the borders. There is a delicate beauty to winter bark, often missed when trees are in leaf. One of my favourites is the snake bark maple, Acer davidii, aptly named for its snake like, striped winter bark. Or try Acer griseum, with burnt toffee coloured, peeling bark, both ideal for smaller gardens.
Evergreen Structure
Winter Flowers
Without the distractions of summer flowers, evergreens take centre stage. If you are looking for some structure try reliable shrubs like Eleagnus x submacrophylla, Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price' or Osmanthus
By mid-January, we are enjoying bright yellow aconites studding the ground through nodding snow drops, followed by carpets of shimmering, jewel-like Crocus tommasinianus and Crocus Blue Peal.

Bottom right: Fragrant flowers of Hamamelis x intermedia Diane. Below: Long tailed tit. Imagery courtesy of Sarah Murch.
I treasure the delicate flowers of miniature Iris reticulata and look forward to bright splashes of electric blue Scilla siberica flowers. For impact, plant these tiny bulbs in their hundreds, or better still, thousands in autumn, under trees, amongst your borders, even in sections of your lawn. Contrast the dark and sultry flowers of Helleborus orientalis with snowdrops and ferns, plant them in shade beneath deciduous trees. Flowering in February perfectly timed for hungry bumblebees looking for nectar and pollen. But no garden of mine would be complete without a winter flowering cherry tree. Prunus subhirtella ‘Orientalis’ flowers intermittently from November to April. Its delicate white blossom and fine tracery of branches against a clear blue, winter sky is something quite special.
Plant Snowdrops ‘In the green’ Snowdrops grow best when planted in winter ‘in the green’ i.e. when they are growing above ground. Bulk up your existing snowdrops by lifting a clump ‘in the green’, split it gently and replant them around your borders. Suppliers: Gee Tee Bulbs www.gee-tee.co.uk Feed your garden birds. Hang up bird feeders, top them up regularly and make sure you have a supply of fresh water for birds during winter. Jobs For January Plant A Tree Winter is the best time to plant trees. Trees provide garden structure, a habitat for wildlife (one oak tree supports a whopping 1,000 species), they absorb water and help reduce flooding. Trees make us feel good. All good enough reasons to plant a tree, but did you know that trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow? In fact, research shows that planting billions of trees globally has the potential to tackle climate crisis. Young trees sequester the most CO2 so if you have a small garden, planting a tree and replacing it once it has outgrown its space makes environmental sense. Planting a tree is a great family activity or a unique Valentine’s gift. Track, Meadowland & Village On a fresh new year's day take a walk with travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram, through the villages in Nottinghamshire. This issue we walk through Leverton & Treswell.
T
his is a lovely walk, which encapsulates traditional rural life, along medieval tracks, meadowland and pretty villages.
Treswell and South Leverton lie just a few miles from the Market Town of East Retford and the A1. South Leverton has a rich history and there is evidence of a Roman settlement in, North and South Leverton and Littleborough, a neighbouring hamlet. There have been many archaeological finds of significant importance. South Leverton was known also for its connections with the Quakers. There were many meeting houses around the area, and although there is no real evidence to suggest South Leverton had one, Meeting House Lane, possibly suggests otherwise. The Mayflower Pilgrims were also closely connected to the area - just a few miles away in the neighbouring village of Sturton Le Steeple, Separatist leader John Robinson was born.
68
Parts of the church, St. Matthew’s, date back to the 12th century with continuous renovations throughout the ages. Although mostly Norman, there has been discovered, fragments of carved stone, which have been dated to the 8th century. It’s a popular church
and the heart of the community along with the public house, The Plough. The Plough is a quaint, beamed building, with stone floors and open fires, perfect for a welcoming pit stop after a long walk. As you make your way through South Leverton towards Treswell, you will see North Leverton Windmill. It’s a fine example, built in 1813 by a group of local farmers and is open every Saturday to the public. Both villages are located over an oilfield, which runs beneath. There are four nodding donkey oil pumps north east of the villages and they produce high quality crude oil. There are two National Wildlife Trust nature reserves, once located between South Leverton and Treswell (Ashton’s Meadow), and Treswell Wood. Ashton’s Meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, an ancient meadow with diverse variety of flora, fauna and wildlife. Treswell Wood is also an important site, it has some of the finest examples of Oak, Maple and Ash trees in the county of Nottinghamshire. Happy ramblings!
Leisure
Directions 1. Our starting point is in front of the
village hall on Town Street. Walk across the road to the pub opposite, the Plough Inn. Turn left down the lane, which runs alongside the pub and continue to follow it until you reach the rear of St. Mathew’s Church. 2. Walk through the churchyard and exit onto Church Street. Pass in front of the church, keeping it to your right, and continue along the pavement up to the junction at Retford Road. Once at the junction, cross over onto Retford Road. 3. Continue along Retford Road for around just over ¼ mile. From this road you can see North Leverton Windmill to your right. Walk along the path until you reach the sharp right-hand corner. Cross over the road here, continuing straight on to Meeting House Lane, which is on the left. Follow along the lane until it veers to the left. Take the track signed Millfield Lane, which runs between two hedges. 4. Emerge and cross over two fields then turn left onto a track, Northfield Lane. Follow the track downhill into the village of Treswell. You will see a road junction, here, turn right onto a surfaced lane, this is Rectory Road. Continue along the lane, walking
slightly uphill to reach another junction onto Town Street, the main road. 5. Turn left and continue to walk through the village for approximately one mile. Townside lane is to your left and there is a chapel to your right. Proceed along until you reach the edge of the village and Cottam Lane. As you approach a bridge the road bears right, here, just before the bridge, turn left along a wide gravel track with a row of trees to your right; this is Rampton Lane, a medieval track. 6. Continue to walk along this lane, which is signposted as a byway. Notice the nodding donkey or oil pumpjack to the left. Walk along the track for about 250 metres until the track bends sharply left. Continue on for another 200 meters, where it turns right. 7. To the left is a National Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, Ashton’s Meadow. This area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Notice the vide variety of wildflowers during the spring and summer months. Follow the track for about ¾ of a mile, ignoring the paths to the left and right as you approach the end, continue along until you reach Town Street back in South Leverton village. Time for that tasty pint in the pub!

Patisserie Perfection Mickael Jahan, a tutor at The School of Artisan Food, who is inspiring students with a modern approach to patisserie, speaks to Made about his passion for baking.
W
orking on the family oyster farm may seem like the ideal way to spend your working days, farming the sea and spending your time in the great outdoors, but for pastry chef Mickael Jahan, the sights and smells from the village bakery proved to be much more of a distraction. It was while he was still at school, aged 14, that his parents put to him a life changing offer – the chance to begin working on their oyster farm in France. “My story started in a small village called Bouin on the west coast of France in the Vendee region, where my parents used to own an oyster farm. Being such a small village with only fishermen and farmers around, the choice of lifestyle seemed limited and obviously my parents had planned for me to take over the oyster farm when I grew older probably since school wasn’t my thing at the time. “At the age of 14 my parents decided it was time for me to start my apprenticeship, one week at school and three weeks at the oyster farms, learning the tricks of the trade.”
For Mickael, the harsh reality of working the sea for oysters was far from the idyllic image the lifestyle conjures up, and it wasn’t long before his thoughts turned towards other opportunities. “It is very hard to ‘farm the sea’, being battered by the elements and at the mercy of unusual, unwanted natural events; I guess like anything else you have to be passionate to engage in such a journey.” It only took him a few months to realise this life wasn’t for him and that his calling was going to be something completely different. It was the sights and smells of the local bakery that pulled him in a new direction – and so he requested a change of career and for a week’s trial in the warmth of the nearby bakers. “I immediately connected to this environment, enjoying the warmth and the smell of goodies coming out of the oven. That was it, my first change of career at the age of 14, joining the baking industry for three years of apprenticeship and there was no turning back.” Mickael’s first job in baking was in a large artisan bakery. Pushing himself all the time, he says this drive has seen him strive to learn all he can, in all areas – and it’s the intricacy and variety that attracts him to baking. “Baking is fulfilling and relaxing as well as being extremely complicated if recipes and processes aren’t followed and designed carefully. Ingredient chemistry knowledge is a must to perform the art of baking with joy. You only need a handful of wonderful ingredients to create the best goodies on the planet.” Mickael cites baking bread, in particular, as a favourite and is passionate about his Viennese pastries. “Creating and making bread is probably one of my favourite things, but I would not be able to list my favourite type. Saying that, I do have a soft spot for Viennese pastries; the wonder of layers and all the possible and surprising fillings that can accompany these beautiful pastries.”
74
His ambition and passion has taken him to various positions and places around the world. He first came to this country in 1998, traveling back to France to complete his Master Baker qualification. He’s put his skills to the test as bakery manager at the prestigious Maison Blanc and at Paul’s Bakery. He has also captained the UK team at The Bakery World Cup. Six years ago he started at The School of Artisan Food, applying his knowledge and skills to deliver a new patisserie course. “The school was expanding, and they wanted to offer courses around Viennese pastry and modern approach to patisserie. Having led the UK baking team during the Bakery World Cup selection from 2010 to 2012 may have convinced the school that I was a good candidate for the role.” The courses he teaches are French Patisserie and Advanced Patisserie and Viennoiserie. The courses attract a wide variety of people including professionals and beginners, all keen to hone their skills. The content and design of the courses is often driven by demand and feedback, as well as being influenced by trends. "I update my recipes and ways of working to make sure that all our goodies are up to date." “It is always a real pleasure to come and pass on my knowledge through products that I really enjoy creating. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing customers, friends and families smile when tasting the products that they’ve just created. I’m lucky enough to say that I live a passion and don’t have to wake up to go to work on daily basis.”

Wok Tips To season a new wok and get rid of any metallic taste, wash well in hot soapy water, rinse and dry. Add 2tbsp. Sunflower oil to the clean wok, swirl it around the sides and heat for 2-3 minutes. Wipe out with a clean paper towel. Repeat this process twice before using the wok for the first time. Never scrub a wok with a scourer or abrasive material. If food sticks, soak it in hot soapy water and rub gently with a sponge. Dry well and rub a lightly oiled kitchen paper towel over the inner surface. Refined peanut oil is best for stir-frying as it has no dominant flavour and cooks at a high temperature without smoking. Soya, sunflower and corn oil are all good substitutes. Soya, sunflower, corn and flavoured rapeseed oils with chilli and garlic are all good substitutes for savoury dishes.

Chinese New Year 2020 Chinese New Year is on 25th
January and it is the Year of the Rat The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. The Chinese insert an extra month every 7 years out of a 19 year cycle - this is the same as adding an extra day on leap year – and this is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. The Chinese Lunar calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Legends say that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only 12 came to bid him farewell and as a reward he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has a profound influence on personality, saying, ‘This is the animal that hides in your heart’.
Chinese New Year Superstitions Sweeping or dusting should not be done on New Years day for fear that good fortune may be swept away!
.
Do not use knives or scissors on New Years Day as this may cut off good fortune! Fresh bean curd and tofu is not included in New Year celebrations as their white colour is considered to be unlucky Nothing should be lent on this day, as anyone who does will be lending all the year. Wear red, don’t wash your hair and definitely don’t cry and you will have a sunny and bright future! While many Chinese people today may not believe in these superstitions, they are still practiced!

The E-Tron Sparks are flying at the Made office as we get the chance to test out the new electric E-Tron from Audi.
86
Audi E-tron 55 Quatro in galaxy blue.
Let’s start by admitting this is Made's first venture into an allelectric car. After a brief familiarisation session by our Audi expert, the keys are passed over and it’s all in our hands. Three screens make up what is described to me as the “virtual cockpit” as well as a colour heads-up display on the windscreen, no traditional analogue dials in sight. Our photographer takes shotgun position as we head out to take this tech for a spin, and to grab a few pics along the way. So we’re two feet into the journey and my co-pilot thinks I’ve left the handbrake off; it’s a strange feeling as we begin to move, silently. Once underway, it’s apparent that this drives like any regular 4x4 car. The penny drops as the distant whine of an ambulance siren just starting up is in fact put down to the electric motors that are powering us through the city - infact, the only indication the engine is on at all, are the lights on the dash that tell you the car is ready to drive. The only anxiety left is the remaining mileage and where, if needed, we would need to re-charge. The ride is comfortable and familiar. The acceleration is quick, it feels effortless and with hardly any noise at all, it feels smooth and refined. At high speed the engine remained silent, with only the wind and road noises filtering through. It packs quite a punch too. The model we drove for the day, the Audi E-Tron 55 Quatro, goes from 0 to 60 in just under six seconds. It handles corners well, powers up to speed when you need it, and felt generally very responsive. The exterior of the car is firmly set in the family of SUVs, nothing overstating that it’s an all-electric car. The internal gadgets now
gain prominence as we explore the comfort, the bells and whistles that this model offers, as we head off to a few of our preferred photo spots for our rainy-day tour of North Notts. From a practical point of view the E-Tron offers quite a bit to tempt SUV drivers over to the electric version. It has a clear, bold and stylish entertainment system, which easy to use screens and responsive controls. And everything about the interior looks clean, comfortable and spacious.

The new E-Tron ticks all the boxes for us and it would fit into life well as a stylish car to use for the daily commute or for more extensive journeys where comfort would be key. Driving the car istelf was a fantastic opportunity to try out the latest technology in electric cars and we will definitely be looking more closely at this range of vehicles in the future. North Notts People
North Notts People There are so many individuals across our region that making it the wonderful place it is for us all to enjoy. We'll be meeting some of our locals to ask a few questions to get to know our fantastic North Notts people better. In this issue we meet our regular feature writer, travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram What is your earliest childhood memory?
If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why?
What is the farthest you have been from home?
Travelling to Retford from East Markham in my grandad's old car. I was sitting between my grandma and grandad on the front bench seat, with its shiny red leather upholstery, trying to learn how to whistle!
I love what I do now, I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. It’s taken me a good few years to become established, through hard work and determination, I’m a published author, writer, photographer with my own media company and tour company.
America, which I have travelled to on many occasions.
Which three words best describe you? Determined, loyal, kind.
What was the last book you read? The Island by Victoria Hislop. It’s beautifully written, vivid and captivating. It’s an historical novel, set on the island of Spinalonga (former leper colony) in Crete. Definitely worth a read, especially if you have visited the island, as I have, the pages come to life.
What is your favourite film? Wuthering Heights, I’ve always loved the story, the last version I watched was the Andrea Arnold's adaptation made in 2011.
What is the best gift you've ever received? A box of old handwritten recipes, notes and memoirs, which belonged to my grandma. I’m soon to be publishing them in a new book, Remedies & Recipes.
What skill would you like to master? I would love to learn how to sail and play the piano…but not at the same time!
What annoys you? Negativity and hypocrisy.
What makes you happy? Being in the great outdoors, walking, traveling and spending time with loved ones.
90
What is your favourite place to eat in the area and why? That’s a tricky one! There are so many lovely places to eat around North Nottinghamshire.
What is your favourite way to spend a weekend? Discovering new places to visit, walking in the countryside and finding a nice cosy country pub for a meal and a drink.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you? I owned my own bistro and wine bar, I can sign using Makaton, and I can sing and play the guitar! (I’m a little rusty now).
If you could go back in time, who would you visit and why? Freddie Mercury, what a complex character, one of the greatest rock singers in history with a voice like no other! I wonder what his life was really like, behind his flamboyancy and hearsay.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Foresight, although we all have to learn from our mistakes and misjudgments in life.
What should every person try at least once in their life? Doing something out of your comfort zone! Even the smallest changes can have the biggest impacts.
Who has been your greatest inspiration? My grandma Violet, she used to tell me that I could do anything in life if I tried, she always had a positive outlook on life, she worked hard, loved her family and friends, truly selfless.
What is the best advice you've been given? - Did you take it? Don’t give up! My daughters have always been supportive when times have been tough. Yes, positivity is a good mindset to have.
What are you most looking forward to in life? Continuing to grow as a person, I love being the age I am now, my perspective on life has changed over the years, I don’t worry too much about the ‘small stuff’ anymore, as the cliché goes ‘life is too short’! I also hope that one day, I will meet my knight in shining armor, to share my life and adventures with.
If you know a true North Notts local hero or a local that you'd like to shout about, let us know by calling: 01777 712609 or email: hello@madeinn.co.uk
